Guy Verlinde is one of Belgium’s most devoted blues storytellers, an artist who does not merely play the blues but truly lives it. Since the age of sixteen, when he first picked up a guitar and harmonica, he has followed a path driven by perseverance, deep emotion, and an unwavering love for the genre. Born on March 22, 1976, in Aartrijke near Bruges, he became captivated as a teenager by the great masters, ranging from Mississippi John Hurt to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the raw slide sound of Hound Dog Taylor. That discovery marked the beginning of a musical journey that now spans more than three decades.

After his early bands Smokin’ Chillums, Backbone, and Mo’ Rice, Verlinde grew into a performer with a distinct and recognizable signature. His powerful vocals, expressive slide guitar, and deeply felt harmonica playing form a style that is firmly rooted in the blues tradition while remaining personal and contemporary. Over the years, he evolved into an artist who does not imitate, but transforms his influences into an authentic musical voice of his own.

In 2026, Guy Verlinde turns 50. He celebrates this milestone with a Best of Blues album. All twelve songs on this album have been remastered to bring out their fullest sound. Two fan favorites, “Do That Boogie” and “Gator Bop,” received fresh remixes, while “Me & My Blues” and “Heaven Inside My Head” were re-recorded, breathing new life into them. Revisiting these songs was a reminder that the blues is not only about the music itself, but also about the people met along the way.

10. Last Goodbye (3:19)
11. The Way You Are (2:22)
12. Karma's Gonna Kick Your Ass (4:06)
13. In July (1:54)

Singer-guitarist Guy Verlinde is a popular figure in the Belgian (and wider) blues and roots scene. He has made thirteen albums in twelve years, which were well received. Verlinde was preparing for his next album, when the corona virus threw a spanner in the works. About 150 concerts were cancelled, and the money he had saved for the production of album fourteen was spent on living expenses. Guy Verlinde decided to set up a crowdfunding campaign and to his surprise the response was overwhelming. Standing in the light of a brand new day could be made. Guy decided to involve as many musicians as possible who had ended up in the same boat in the project. That is why seventeen musicians lent their cooperation. Among them names such as Tom Beardslee (guitar, banjo), Nils de caster (violin), Roel Spanjers (piano) and Olivier vander Bauwede (harmonica, guitar, harmonium, vocals). The CD opens instrumentally with a short prelude that is an ode to the break of day: Breaking dawn. This is followed by a lot of variety – from (semi)acoustic songs to exuberant brass, to fast guitar work. You will find wonderful guitar strumming in, among others, The unsung (the never sung heroes), If I were your God and The way you are. Beautiful ballads that radiate peace. How much more festive does I’m your man sound. Tough Springsteen-like material can be found in Up on the mountain (which deals with the circle of life), while the melancholy of Caroline brings drips off. To conclude with In July, with a harmonica blown in Toots Thielemans style, which sets the mood in an ode to a summer day. Guy Verlinde was determined to deliver a positive album, and together with the eagerness of the musicians, who are allowed to work together again, this results in a particularly good-sounding and sympathetic end result.

10. Pursuit Of Happiness (3:54)
11. World Goin' Wrong (3:42)

Belgian blues pride Guy Verlinde is back with a new blues album. We proudly present Promised Land Blues, the acoustic blues album he recorded with Tom Eylenbosch. Over the years, they have developed a unique sound with their narrative blues songs, which resonates deeply with blues audiences in Belgium and beyond. In 2024, they were awarded the Belgian Blues Award for Best Duo.

Every song on this album reflects their shared passion for the blues. In Guy’s guitar and vocals you can hear the spirit of the blues greats, while he also introduces fresh, contemporary elements. Tom’s piano and banjo form the perfect counterpoint with which he musically colors each song.

You’ll hear a mix of new socially critical songs, such as “Tears Over Gaza” and “World Goin’ Wrong”, alongside traditional blues gems such as “You Gotta Move” and “A Worried Man Blues”. Some songs, such as “Heaven Inside My Head”, “Do That Boogie”, “Reckonin’ Blues”, “Gotta Let Go”, “I’ve Got You” and “Pursuit of Happiness”, became crowd favourites during the concerts. Although they were released earlier, they were given a new acoustic arrangement on this album.

In true blues tradition, reworking songs is a hallmark of the genre, allowing artists to breathe new life into their music over time. No album would be complete without a Tiny Legs Tim song, and “Hard to Admit” is a heartfelt tribute to their dear friend, who passed away some time ago. Promised Land Blues is an acoustic blues album that is deeply rooted in tradition, but not afraid to explore new horizons. /Blues Magazine

Guy Verlinde is a Belgian blues man from Ghent. Together with Tiny Legs Tim one of the exponents of the wonderful music that produces the Flemish clay. The third album from our Zuiderburen in a short time that makes me fall back in surprise. The aforementioned Tiny Legs Tim, the Erickson Dellcroix couple and now this man.

Who is specifically asked for forgiveness and what is being done to that person is not addressed. The feeling of guilt and sadness is the theme of the entire album. Sorrowful sorrow from the bottom of his soul. The somewhat murmuring vocals are reminiscent of Thomas Dybdahl. The spherical guitar strums supplemented with a modest piano are comparable to the musical world that the well-known Norwegian brings to his albums. Even the songs in which a harmonica is used are not robust blues stampers but up tempo melancholy.

Closer Distant Lullaby is startling. The song seems to be sung by the wrong man, the way the singing waves seem cut out for the baritone of Nick Cave. The voice straight from the Old Testament, meaningfully giving the song its meaning. The high singing voice of Verlinde contrasts very well. Which makes you realize that a fringing edge is missing in both voice and music. The lack of venom or slight madness detracts from the whole light.

Nevertheless, with his request for forgiveness, Verlinde delivers a good album that listens nicely. The enthusiast who wants to hear raging guitars, sturdy drums and pounding basses in his blues should just skip this. Especially fans of Thomas Dybdahl and James Taylor will enjoy this enough.

After years of hard work Guy Verlinde has become the Belgian blues pride. And though it may sound like a dusty clichĂ©, he's by far "the hardest working performer" within the Belgian blues scene. In eight years he released 9 albums and signed a record deal with the prestigious labels Parsifal (B) & Dixefrog Records (FR). In 2011 he won the Belgian Blues Award. He represented Belgium at the European Blues Challenge '12 in Berlin (D), and in 2014 he was voted “Best Live Act”. The last few years the European Blues scene has also discovered Guy Verlinde after his tours in Holland, Germany, France, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Slowakia, Luxembourg, …

Guy Verlinde not only tours non-stop with his band "The Mighty Gators". He also performs as a "One Man Band" with his resonator & Weissenborn guitars & an old suitcase as drumkit. In 2011 he founded the only Hound Dog Taylor tribute band in Europe, to keep the legacy of Hound Dog Taylor alive. As he once got infected by the blues at a young age, Guy Verlinde also wants to introduce the blues to youngsters. Therefore he has a "Blues in Schools" project. And he organizes two times a month a blues jam session in his home town Ghent for young blues musicians. As his slide guitar & harp style are very emotional, unique & authentic, a Guy Verlinde show is always very energetic. As he says:" In a world of plastic & virtuality, people want real things". A Guy Verlinde show is all about energy and total surrender to the audience. This makes him a real crowd pleaser.

After recording his Hound Dog Taylor Tribute album in 2011, Guy Verlinde now presents this high-energy album with 11 originals in that same tradition and spirit with a contemporary sound.
