Born in Oslo in 1955, the son of a piano builder/tuner, it was fairly natural that Reidar’s fascination with the instrument began at an early age with lessons from age 7, and an early diet of albums by the British blues exponents of the 1960s, The Animals, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac and Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack. Many of these albums were supervised by legendary UK blues producer Mike Vernon who also produced Reidar’s 2nd album ‘Red, White & Blues’.

A collaboration between Fleetwood Mac and pianist Otis Spann particularly appealed to the nimble fingered young Larsen who was soon checking out the likes of Eddie Boyd, Champion Jack Dupree, Memphis Slim and Professor Longhair. Reidar is a highly respected musician working with numerous Norwegian artists, and a much in demand piano man for touring blues stars supporting such names as Lowell Fulson and Peter Green.

In addition to his 10 studio albums, Reidar has also recorded 2 live sets at New York’s legendary Cotton Club with the venue’s own gospel sensation, Anne Sinclair and The Spirit Of Love Singers with whom Reidar and the band have also toured Scandinavia on several occasions. He often makes guest appearances on other acts albums and features on 4 tracks on the latest set by Louisiana Red.

Long recognized as one of the finest blues acts in Scandinavia, Reidar & The Storytellers, his regular band since 1997, are in big demand and play over 100 gigs a year.

Guido Toffoletti (Venice, 20 June 1951 - Cavarzere, 22 August 1999) was an Italian musician. One of the most important and long-lived exponents of blues music in Italy, with his Blues Society has contributed significantly to spreading the music of the Devil. Born in Venice, but immediately proves impatient to normal life. He lived the first school years in a boarding school in Asolo, but then he sailed the school to be able to play in a beat complex. His passion for music exploded at a very young age and in particular for the king of Rock & roll, Elvis Presley, of whom he became an avid collector.

Fourteen year old boy runs away from home and goes to work as roadie for the various beat groups of the period. In spite of being in the middle of music, he adapts himself to transporting instruments to musicians, particularly to the Renegades. With a first rudimentary guitar he learns the first notes of the blues. But in Italy there is no space for this kind of music. He then decided to try his luck and went to London, with little money and without a destination. He works in the premises, adapting to all the works, just to stay close to the music. He himself told of having married a dancer by proxy, just to stay in London.

One night he meets Alexis Korner, the father of the British Blues on the street. Alexis is his teacher and patron, but he is above all a great fraternal friend who introduces him to the English music scene, presenting him as "the Venetian who knows us more than ourselves". Guido exploded his passion for the blues and in 1976 he returned to Italy, founded his own group, the Blues Society, and released his first album Born in London in january 1976, a recording product for a small label and limited edition. In his discography, Guido starts by offering personal versions of the classics of blues, songs by Muddy Waters ("I Can't Be Satisfied") or Willie Dixon or Jimmy Reed, but then the compositions become for the most part in his name.

In April 1995 Guido and his Blues Society also participated, the only Italian, to the 'Alexis Korner Memorial Concert' along with the biggest names in English blues. Become friends with Mick Taylor and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, a guest in the Paris studios where they were recording the record Steel Wheels and James Cotton. James Cotton, Louisiana Red, Mick Taylor and Ian Stewart, Tolo Marton (guitarist, formerly Le Orme), Herbie Goins (former voice of Alexis Korner's band) and Paul Jones (ex Manfred Mann) play among his records as well as Zoot Money (formerly Animals), Jorma Kaukonen and Dick Heckstall-Smith (formerly Colosseum). /Excerpt from biography, translated from Italian by Google

Bob Margolin - Thanks

5. Lonely Man Blues (3:41)

7. Hard Working Man (3:24)
8. For You My Love (3:06)
9. No Consolation (4:17)
10. Just Before Dawn (4:02)

2023 marked the 50th year since Muddy Waters enlisted Bob Margolin, a young Bostonian wielding a Gibson Archtop six-string, as the second guitarist in his legendary band. Bob celebrates the anniversary in style here. It’s the same instrument Margolin used at Muddy’s side in The Band’s Last Waltz movie, and its strings provide rich accompaniment on all ten tracks of this acoustic CD. This is truly a masterful solo effort. Serving as the album’s producer, mixer and engineer, Margolin is responsible for all of the sounds you hear here. His warm, familiar voice — occasionally in four-part harmony — and his fretwork are exceptional. His only accompaniment is the appearance of one of his border collies, Levon, whose joyful bark spices up one cut.

A step-down intro opens “Going Down to Main Street.” Written by Muddy and first recorded in 1952, the number takes on new life as Bob delivers steady rhythm while simultaneously playing lead on slide in the style he learned from the master. It’s a love song in which the singer offers to take the lady on a shopping spree, warns her about cheating and expresses his sorrow every time the woman leaves his sight. The Band’s “Shape I’m In” follows and takes on a completely different, country-blues feel from the original through Margolin’s attack, which includes singing harmony with himself.

“Mean Old Chicago,” the first of four originals that Bob rearranged to deliver on Archtop, comes with an early Muddy feel as he announces a forthcoming trip to the Windy City, where the music community is reeling because “Death was hungry this year. He took more than his share.” It gives way to “Who,” a tune with rich history. Written by Willie Dixon and first recorded by Little Walter, Bob played it frequently with another legend, R&B giant Nappy Brown, and it changes the atmosphere instantaneously here thanks to Margolin’s upbeat delivery.

Bob and Muddy co-wrote “Lonely Man Blues,” which follows. A song of regret about the absence of a lady, it features multiple guitar tracks and a plaintive feel throughout and flows comfortably into the Margolin original, “Baby Can’t Be Found,” in which the woman promises to show up at a certain hour and leaves the singer in the lurch, wondering where she might be. Penned by Jimmy Rogers — who was in the Waters band 25 years prior to Margolin’s arrival, the slow blues, “Hard Working Man,” serves up more pain, cheating on the title guy – and, hopefully, eventually coming to realize what a fool she’s been.

“For You My Love” — penned by Paul Gayten and a song Bob performed frequently with Pinetop Perkins – brightens the mood before two Margolin originals – the minor-key “No Consolation,” a complaint about searching without success for compassion, and the upbeat “Just Before Dawn,” an reverie about the break of day – bring the album to a close. Bob Margolin delivers a big tip of the hat to Muddy and his influences here. And after giving this one a listen, you’ll be thanking him, too! /Marty Gunther, Blues Blast Magazine

That the guitarist (Pauel Joseph; Paul Joseph), that the drummer (part-time vocalist) (DJ Riddick; DJ Riddick) loves the blues (Howling Wolf, Albert King, etc.). Plus the guys are also old rockers (AC/DC and all that). That’s how it grew together - they took one, screwed the other, wrapped it well with electrical tape/wrapped it up and soldered it, and it’s done! The group is called 100 WATT Vipers, which means “100 Watt Vipers”. The guys are from Florida and have been playing music since 2013. They searched for a long time and painfully for their style, regardless of any weather (even in the heat, even in the rain), and I must say they found a real trick.

1st March 2014 saw Stafford-based lo-fi blues extravaganza .44 pistol release Live at the Vaults, fourteen tracks of relentless searing guitar, pounding drums and sweaty energy recorded at a packed show the previous September in Stafford’s Market Vaults. Following on from 2011’s Served Raw the record captures the spark of the band’s energetic live show. This also marks the recorded debut of lead singer Pete Wearn’s homemade guitar, constructed from an oil can, which appears on several tracks including the showpiece original “Born in the Borderlands”. The choice of the Market Vaults as the venue for the recording was no coincidence, as it is both the historical site of the founding members’ first meeting, and the band’s favourite off-duty watering hole. Described as ‘brilliant’ by Maverick Magazine & ‘kick-ass’ by bluesinthenorthwest.com, .44 Pistol consists of Pete Wearn (vocal, harmonica & slide guitar) Ash Jones (Lead & rhythm guitar) & Mick Askey (Drums). They do not have a bass player, nor do they feel they need one.

Walter 'Wolfman' Washington - Feel So At Home

Album: Feel So At Home
Size: 88,8 MB
Time: 38:18
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2023
Styles: Jazzy blues
Art: Front

1. I Feel So At Home Here (4:42)
2. Without You (5:13)
3. Along About Midnight (5:15)
4. Lovely Day (4:19)
5. Black Night (5:11)
6. Sufferin' Mind (3:35)
7. It's Rainin' In My Life (5:01)
8. I've Been Wrong For So Long (4:59)

The late, great guitarist and vocalist Walter “Wolfman” Washington could be accompanied by a string section — as he is on several cuts on this newly released album, Feel So at Home, backed by a combo or alone with his guitar — his voice and style remain immediately identifiable. It’s called soulfulness.

Fans will be grateful for more from Wolfman in a setting and ambiance similar to that of his fine previous release, 2018s My Future Is My Past. The astute rhythm section of bassist James Singleton and drummer Stanton Moore are “in the house,” with Steve DeTroy filling it out on piano and providing a thoughtful solo on a Washington original, “Without You” as well as other selections.

Dig Walter’s cover of the Bobby “Blue” Bland classic, “I’ve Been Wrong So Long.” Vocally he is able to combine pure power, grit and tenderness just as Bland did though in his very own way. Wolfman’s quick guitar accents pepper the tune, and his sharply pitched solo sends it over the top. For some pure blues, Washington hits with “Along About Midnight,” on which he takes his time like a crushed man with a broken heart. He returns to the blues, the late-night kind on which he made his reputation, on “Black Night” as well as “Sufferin’ Mind.”

Throughout the album, it’s almost as if Washington is playing a finely synchronized vocal, guitar duet — he is one with his instrument. Full of excellent material, Feel So at Home greets the wonderful Walter “Wolfman” Washington back into the abode of a listener’s heart where he is always welcome. Turn the lights down low, it’s Wolfman time. /Geraldine Wyckoff, Offbeat Magazine

43 Cambridge are a four-piece rock band from Perth Western Australia and have been performing for over 20 years. They have always played the songs they love as well as releasing four albums of their own material. They are currently performing a collection of songs from some of the great bands of the last 60 years specialising in high energy guitar rhythms, powerful vocals and harmonica all driven along by Ben Lawrence’s rock-solid beats. Whether playing 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 21st century or blues, 43 Cambridge have always been able to tailor a set list thanks to front man Ray’s keen ability to read a room. 43 Cambridge have played across Australia… from singing for their supper at Eucla Roadhouse, to shutting down production at Murrin Murrin mine. They’ve played at The Espy in St Kilda, Settlers Tavern in Margaret River, Broome, Adelaide, Fremantle, Sydney Wagga Wagga, Exmouth, Kalgoorlie, Albany, and most places in between. Pubs, clubs, weddings, parties, corporate and festivals. They’ve played to crowds of ten to ten thousand. I picked this up on a whim years ago now, and oh what a classic it has become for me. "Johnson's Blues" is just an absolute shredder. Amazing stuff. Anyone who likes raw, edgy, bluesy, Americana, music that is unlikely to be heard on ANY radio station (at least here in the US... Europe seems to be a little more adventurous), pick this up. Listen to it, let it sink in, then play it again. Loud. On a side note, I had to pull this one out as I drove home from a recent weekend backpacking trip during which I did a 20 mile day. Just seems so appropriate

Additional personnel includes: Charlie Daniels (vocals, guitar); .38 Special.

Recorded at The Castle, Franklin, Tennessee.

A Southern rock Christmas album? Hey, it makes as much sense as Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," and the good news is that the Lynyrd Skynyrd boys--along with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band and .38 Special--truly get into the spirit with a nice mix of seasonal standards (rock and otherwise) and originals. Among the latter, the Daniels Band provides a frankly terrifying "Devil Went Down to Georgia"-derived take on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," while Skynyrd crunch through Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph Run" with Stones-like aplomb. On the originals front, .38 Special score big with "Mama's Song," a Southern rock power pop hybrid in their best '80s style, although it must be said that these self-proclaimed wild-eyed Southern boys have a sentimental streak a mile wide (and when their song is followed by Skynyrd's near-obscene "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'," it's a tad disconcertin'...). In any case, the album concludes, nicely, with a little harmonizing by the entire Skynyrd family (kids, relatives, road crew, dogs, etc). Fun stuff. ~AMG

12. I Don't Want To Take A Chance (3:30)
13. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (Live) (9:00)

Singer-songwriter Marcel Smith’s From My Soul follows up his Little Village release Everybody Needs Love, covered in 2020 by Richard Ludmerer on these pages. His review has considerable biographical information, so we’ll forge ahead with the essence of what’s at hand this time out. First, Smith co-wrote five of these eleven tunes (notwithstanding the Bonus track of the Bee Gees cover, “How Can you Mend a Broken Heart.’) Familiar strains of Sam Cooke, Little Richard, O.V. Wright, Jimmy Liggins, Tyrone Davis, Willie Nelson, and Ben E. King are heard in the covers which range from vintage soul and R&B to gospel. The usual Little Village/Greaseland suspects are aboard – producer, engineer, mixer, mastering, and guitarist Kid Anderson, keyboardist Jim Pugh, harmonicist Rick Estrin, drummer Derrick “D’Mar” Martin, and label stalwarts Sons of Soul Revivers on four tracks. Other contributors are Endre Tarczy (bass), Jon Otis (percussion), Jerry Jemmott (bass on the bonus track), the horn section of Mike Rinta (trombone), Aaron Lington (saxophone),and John Worley (trumpet); Don Dally (strings), Tony Lufrano (organ on “Nothing Left to Burn”)), Eric Spaulding (sax solo on “If You Miss Me’), and Lisa Leuschner Andersen (backgrounds on two tracks). Johnny Rawls even sings with Smith on two of these. This album is as good a mix of blues, soul, R&B, and gospel to come along in recent years, the kind of stuff we only seem to find on Catfood Records (Rawls’ label) and Little Village who brings the likes of Smith, Sonny Green, and Wee Willie Walker.

The first three tracks are Smith co-writes, beginning with “I’m Coming Home to You,” uplifting soul with the full aggregation of horns and Sons of the Soul Survivors. “If You Miss Me’ is a comfy soul ballad in the vein of Sam Cooke imbued with Spaulding’s lyrical tenor solo, while the string bathed “What Can We Do,” is an urgent plea to save Mother Earth with the Sons of the Soul Survivors returning to enhance that ‘power of love’ that Smith sings so beautifully about. These three songs could hardly be more different in terms of instrumental treatment, a nod to Smith’s growing skill as a songwriter, lauded to no end by Andersen in the liner notes. Then the ‘la-da-la-da” and stomping beat of Little Richard’s “Freedom Blues” finds Smith singing fiercely and with a rougher edge, and reaching into falsetto at times as Estrin blows a mean harp solo; some blues roaring unexpectedly from the previous three tracks, except for the presence again of the Sons.

Smith returns to the string accompaniment for a gorgeous rendition of Willie Nelson’s “Wake Me When It’s Over,” punctuated by a tasty vibraphone solo. Old school, horn slathered R&B is at the core of Jimmy Liggins’ “Drunk” with a gutsy trombone solo from Mike Rinta lighting up the dance floor. “To Be True” owes to Pugh and Richard Cousins, one they wrote for Robert Cray that appeared on his album This Time. The fourth of Smith originals, “Nothing Left to Burn” follows, another soul stirrer, with an organ solo from Tony Lufrano and backing from the horns. These set the stage for the two with Johnny Rawls, the ballad “There Goes My Used to Be,” from O.V. Wright (Rawls was Wright’s musical director) and the big hit from Tyrone Davis, one of the all-time best soul songs, “Turn Back the Hands Of Time” replete with the Sons on the choruses.

Smith’s last original is another Sam Cooke-like ballad, “My Heart Told A Lie,” enriched by Lisa L. Andersen’s harmonies and Rinta’s stellar horn arrangement. “I Don’t Want to Take a Chance” was written by iconic soul writer George Jackson and dates to the mid-sixties, and first recorded by Wee Willie Walker around that same time. The bonus track from the Bee Gees was recorded live at Greaseland in October of 2021 and provides a brief audio of Smith in a preamble of the song before he proceeds to regale the audience, this time in his rough-edged style. Yes, he can go from smooth crooner to the more rugged style seamlessly.

This is Soul Music in 2023, sounding every bit as good as it has for the past sixty plus years. It takes a special breed of singer to deliver this music convincingly. Marcel Smith is that and then some. ~Jim Hynes

You can experience some rich guitar sounds here, as well as sharp bottleneck interludes as well as fat distorted licks including beautiful bends that are reminiscent of Eric Clapton during the Cream era." 10. I Can Tell By The Way You Smell (2:29)

Long recognized as one of the Chicago circuit's premier drummers, charismatic Casey Jones has moved out in front of his band over the last decade instead of hiding behind his kit. Casey discovered that beating his way through the world was fun while drilling with his high school marching band back in Greenville. He moved to Chicago in 1956. Before the end of the year, he was drumming professionally with an outfit called Otis Luke & the Rhythm Bombers (for a whopping five bucks a night). One auspicious 1959 night, Jones was forced to sing live for the first time when the pianist leading his band was tossed in jail. He found screaming like Little Richard was pretty enjoyable too.

Early '60s session work behind Earl Hooker, A.C. Reed, McKinley Mitchell, and Muddy Waters (1962's You Need Love) kept Jones busy, as did playing on the South and West sides with the likes of Otis Rush and Freddy King. His profile rose markedly in 1978 when he slid into the drum chair with Albert Collins's hand-picked combo, the Icebreakers. His impeccable timekeeping powered the band for six-and-a-half years, and he played on Collins's first six Alligator albums (notably Ice Pickin' and the '85 summit meeting Showdown! with Robert Cray and Johnny Copeland).

Casey Jones has been holding down Sunday nights at Chicago's popular Kingston Mines nightclub for nearly a decade - a period that's seen his own discography grow steadily. 1987's Solid Blue for Rooster Blues preceded the formation of his own label, Airwax Records (source of his last few CDs, including 1993's The Crowd Pleaser and [I-94] On My Way to Chicago in 1995). Bluestown Records is proud to present the brand new album ‘Songs From Notodden Norway’ by Norway’s popular and in demand rocking blues band Spoonful of Blues. ‘Songs From Notodden Norway’ is the band’s 6th album on Bluestown Records. The album was recorded in Notodden’s own Juke Joint Studio and contains 11 original songs written by Jostein Forsberg and Morten Omlid.

This is music that comes from Notodden, Norway. The strange little industrial town at the entrance to Telemark County. Telemark, the sparsely populated area, which in the old days was considered lawless, and which was not even drawn on the map. A musical industrial town influenced by the area’s folk music, “rallar music” and blues music from distant regions. In this town, which is neither city nor country, or perhaps both, the native Notodden guys and “longtime friends”, Jostein and Morten, have created the content for this album. Recorded in Notodden, together with the other boys in the band, Tony and Eskil. The songs are about Notodden and about the people who live here, while the songs both feel and are perceived as universal. These are Songs From Notodden Norway.

Spoonful of Blues consists of: Jostein Forsberg (vocals, harmonica); Morten Omlid (guitar, vocals); Eskil Aasland (drums, vocals); Tony Caddle (bass).

Note: Morten Omlid passed away on November 24 at the age of 62. R.I.P.

Reed, McKinley Mitchell, and Muddy Waters (1962's "You Need Love") kept Jones busy, as did playing on the South and West sides with the likes of Otis Rush and Freddy King.

/Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

9. Big Boss Man (3:56)
10. Walking The Dog (3:43)
11. Lay Down Sally (3:23)

Bluestime is the new album by the blues band Jay Doe & The Blues Preachers. Eleven songs recorded between October 2020 and May 2021 during the pandemic, production, mixing and mastering were carried out by Javier Casal at the Habitáculo Sonoro Studios in July 2023.

It is an eclectic album of covers where, although the common denominator is classic electric blues, they play other styles such as rhythm & blues, country and soul. The band wants to reflect what they really like to play live, music based on the classics of the genre with recognizable themes giving it their own style, this is reflected in the different arrangements of the songs, which they make their own and thus differentiate themselves in greater or lesser extent of the original themes without losing their essence.

This way you can recognize Shuffle rhythms (“She's Tuff”, “Big Boss Man”), Rumbas (“Nest Time You See Me”, “Walking To My Baby”), New Orleans aires (“Got My Mojo Working”), country (“Lay Down Sally”, “Call Me The Breeze”), a more forceful power blues song with fuzz guitars (“Memphis Train”), soul and rhythm & blues is reflected in songs like (“Mustang Sally”, “Walking The Dog”) and, how could it be otherwise, a slow blues cut (“Worried Life Blues”) also appears.

For what has been said, we have an album of versions of classics where the link is the blues, but in which each song transports us to a different environment and places in which the band contributes its own arrangements, causing, through listening, a amalgamation of own sounds giving coherence to the entire work.

Personnel: Jay Doe (guitar, vocals); Lucas Fernandez (lead guitar); Alexandre Carrero (bass); Manuel Ares (drums); Ramon Figui (harmonica).

As the holiday season approaches, Joe Bonamassa has extended a particular musical offering, a digital album titled Merry Christmas, Baby. The 14-track compilation reflects the musicians’ stylistic lean with blues-infused classics and new original songs that evoke the essence of the yuletide experience.

Merry Christmas, Baby presents a diverse assemblage of songs and opens with an alternate take on the title track, offering a new perspective on Bonamassa’s festive favorite. Also featured are the Irish rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” and an orchestral version of “O Holy Night,” traditional holiday melodies with unique blues-rock flair. Also included on the set is a soulful rendition of “Lonesome Christmas,” a rhythmic display of Christmas Boogie (One Little Kiss).” Dion Dimucci’s original “Hello Christmas” sees guest Amy Grant assisting Bonamassa on the track. “You Know It’s Christmas” is another Dimucci track that sees the bluesman adding his signature sound to the number.

The release of Merry Christmas, Baby arrives after the successful conclusion of Bonamassa’s 2023 tour, an example of his enduring presence in the sphere of blues and rock. The run spanned 88 shows over 180 days, clocking in at 65,500 miles of travel and accounting for two Pacific journeys and six across the Atlantic. The extensive outing showcased the artist’s superb guitar ability and soulful vocals, highlighting material from his latest studio collection, Blues Deluxe Vol. 2: a tribute to his blues roots and two decades of musical mastery. Notably, the set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.

Uncle Sinner is a Canadian artist who plays music that sweats, scratches and stomps. Most of his songs are created using the skeletons of traditional American music, but the words are often re-written and the bones rearranged. Uncle Sinner accompanies his arrangements with banjo, slide guitar and various other guitars. Uncle Sinner’s first cd, “Ballads and Mental Breakdowns”, was released in December 2008 by Devil’s Ruin Records (now apparently defunct). A follow-up, “Let the Devil In” will be released in 2015.
