Gerry McAvoy, Davy Knowles, and Brendan O'Neil have formed a new blues-rock band called MKO, an acronym for their surnames: McAvoy, Knowles, O'Neill.

All three musicians are known for their association with the late, legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher. Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Brendan O'Neill (drums) are both alumni of Gallagher's band, and Davy Knowles (guitar/vocals) has been performing with them in the "Band of Friends," a project dedicated to celebrating Gallagher's music.

The MKO project differs from "Band of Friends" as it focuses on performing original songs penned by Knowles, rather than a tribute to Gallagher. The band released their self-titled debut album, which features eight original tracks.

Since bursting on to the scene with his band Back Door Slam’s critically acclaimed album ‘Roll Away’ in 2007 (“I heard the spirit of Jimi Hendrix” Patrick McDonald - Seattle Times), Davy’s star has only risen. His sophomore release ‘Coming Up For Air’ was produced by the legendary Peter Frampton (“Davy already has a recognizable style. He’s definitely the gunslinger guitarist of the 21st century,’’- Peter Frampton), with subsequent tours seeing him supporting and sharing the stage with acts such as Jeff Beck, The Who, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, George Thorogood, Brian Setzer, the Sammy Hagar-fronted supergroup Chickenfoot, and guitar hero Joe Satriani who called Davy “My favorite modern Bluesman”.

Knowles has several top-5 Billboard Blues charting albums under his belt, high profile TV appearances (Jimmy Kimmel Live and CBS Good Morning America among others), and has been praised with high accolades from heroes and press alike - but it’s not just the music industry who has taken note. Knowles was also the very first artist in history to perform live to the International Space Station directly from mission control in Houston TX, and has had his music taken to the Space Station by two astronauts, Nicole Stott and Ron Garan, on their respective missions orbiting Earth.

Never one to be satisfied or to sit still, Knowles has explored multiple genres and styles, from the hard-hitting 70’s classic rock influenced album ‘Three Miles From Avalon’, to the haunting acoustic delta blues of ‘1932’, and the sweet, soul-searching folk of 2023’s ‘If I Should Wander’.

Roots singer-songwriter and guitarist Davy Knowles boldly steps forward with timeless and cohesive songwriting; sleek modern production; and a lyrical, play-for-the-song guitar approach informed from soul, folk, rock, and blues. The 12-song album is just as influenced by The Black Keys, Fantastic Negrito, Gary Clark Jr., as it is Muddy Waters, Junior Kimbrough, and R.L. Burnside. “When it came time to record this album, it was all about supporting the songs as opposed to ‘how quickly I can get to the guitar solo’,” the Isle of Man-born, Chicago-based artist says laughing. “I’m not a purist, and the way for roots music to stay relevant is to adapt and progress.”

Produced by Eric Corne (John Mayall, Joe Walsh, Joe Bonamassa), What Happens Next is something of a departure from Knowles’s fired-up and reverent take on blues and Americana, featuring poetic songwriting and soulfully emotive vocals that steal the show. The 12-song body of work offers forth a peaks-and-valleys album experience winding through brawny riffs, jazzy blues balladry, and vintage soul before concluding with one of Knowles’s most personal songs released to date. Throughout it all, his guitar playing is brilliantly understated, his rhythm work is deft and dynamic. The album bursts open with, “Light Of The Moon,” a swaggering riff-rocker replete with vibey 1960s organ flourishes, hooky minor-tinged refrains, and impassioned soul-drenched vocals. Here, Davy’s lead breaks drip sustain, vibrato, and sublime bluesy melodicism.

Davy Knowles (born 30 of April 1987) is a Manx blues guitarist and singer. Knowles currently tours as a solo artist, but is formerly of the blues-rock band Back Door Slam, as well as working under the name Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam for a short period of time. With Back Door Slam, he played lead guitar and sang on their debut album, Roll Away. After a split-up with bassist Adam Jones and drummer Ross Doyle, Knowles released the first and only album under the name Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam, Coming Up for Air, on 19 May 2009. Knowles drew his musical influences from blues musicians that he grew up listening to such as Dire Straits, Peter Green, and Eric Clapton's Cream. Due to his home country's proximity to Ireland, Knowles has stated that his music also is influenced by the Celtic genre, which is noted to be present in the song "Roll Away".[3] In April 2009, Knowles toured with British guitarist Jeff Beck on his American tour, where he was the opening act.[4] He toured with Joe Satriani and Chickenfoot in the United States through December 2009. Davy Knowles toured with The Rhythm Devils in 2010.

Knowles released his first solo album, The Outsider, in 2014. He released his second solo album, Three Miles From Avalon, in 2016. He is currently based out of Chicago, Illinois and continues to tour in the United States regularly.

This record will present a collection of songs performed exclusively on his cherished 1932 National Triolian Guitar. Knowles purchased the classic axe at Gruhn’s Guitars in Nashville, during his first tour of the U.S.

“I’ve always found my old National guitar to be such an inspiring instrument,” he shares. “It’s always given that ‘instant mojo’ to every track I’ve used it on in the past. I thought it was high time I did a project purely on this fantastic machine.”

Knowles most recent studio album, Three Miles From Avalon, entered the Billboard Blues chart at #5, sharing the top ten the week of release with Joe Bonamassa, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Keb Mo’ and others.

The Chicago-based artist began his journey as a young man growing up on the UK’s Isle of Man. His commitment to succeed led to his emigration to America at 19 with his band, Back Door Slam. Since that time, Knowles has released three Billboard chart-topping studio albums, as well as various live albums and DVDs. He has headlined the globe, and has toured with Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, The Who, Gov’t Mule, Joe Bonamassa, and Peter Frampton.

Knowles is one of only a small handful of artists who’ve had their music beamed straight into space for astronauts listening on the International Space Station. Chicago based Davy Knowles is at it again with a new album Three Miles From Avalon. Dripping with classic blues riffs and intricate guitar work this is exactly what we have come to expect from an artist who has not one, but two, top three billboard blues chart albums. This newest venture Three Miles From Avalon does not disappoint. Knowles co-produced and recorded this album in his base of operations Chicago with friend Anthony Gravino.

My favorite track “Oxford MS”, a story song of violence and torment pushes this album from amazing, to astronomically amazing. Meanwhile, “Never Gonna Be The Same” sounds like Knowles stretched the south side of Chicago all the way down to the bayou. It has a slick and humid sound that leaves you sweating for more. Moving right along we have the albums namesake, “Three Miles From Avalon,” which creates a downbeat whirlpool that pulls you in and keeps you there.

“What You’re Made Of” on the other hand is like getting a chiropractic adjustment from a jackhammer, you know it’s probably a bad idea, but it’s impossible to resist once it’s offered.

Davy Knowles, the name will ring bells yes this is the solo album of the precocious young guitarist from Isle Of Man who was formerly part of the blues-rock band Back Door Slam. Davy is now working as a solo artist and is based in U.S.A gaining a deserved reputation as Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam. Outsider is 14 tracks of a perfect blending of guitar and vocals as he delivers the self-penned numbers with vigour and passion. The words tell a story that are at times introspective, probably autobiographical but they resonate with the listener as they are about striving and life experiences and disappointment we can all relate to.

The open track Ain’t No Grave, has a haunting desolate intro delivered by resonator and Hammond and then you hear Davy’s gravelly distinct voice for the first time, but this is no maudlin track as the beat picks up and a positive vibe takes over with a foot tapping drumming beat and some great lyrics. Work A Little Harder, perhaps will be many people’s anthem for 2015 this track has a feel of a rock anthem you can imagine this delivered in an arena with the audience screaming back the chorus it has real energy. The tempo changes again with Island Bound, a solo style track vocals and guitar and a storyline that makes you want to sit back and listen. What Doesn’t Kill You; has a different riff and feel and certainly could form part of a motivational track listing as he creates a vocal picture that certainly engages. The title track Outsider has some dirty guitar, melodic Hammond and his vocals have a different tone there is an urgency in this song and despair of being on the outside looking in whether that is physical or a mental state you find yourself in. His song/story skills are at the top of the game as he really captures that fear we all have when we feel outside how when we speak the words catch in our throats. The words fall away and then there is the reflective instrumental closing of the track that real works so well who needs words when you are on the outside.

This is an album full of little gems, salient works, delightful riffs and licks and a group of musicians who just want to play and deliver quality music and this is an album like a box of chocolates full of little bits of musical temptation that you just want to listen to.
