By the time Wolf reached Russia his “Blue Fix” tour had taken him literally across the globe. The timing of the recording of a live performance could not have been better. The operation came about after meeting Russia’s own Blues maestro, Arsen Shomakhov. The pair decided to swap services and help book a tour for each others in their familiar territories.

After only two rehearsals and one concert at the BB King club downtown Moscow, a film crew and mobile studio was brought in to record the following performance at the Jazz Town Theater. It has been said that nothing can prepare you for Wolf Mail live on stage, as he does not believe in playing safe and when he performs his recorded stuff he goes way outside the square. That night at the Jazz Town was no exception, and just as he had done it over the four hundred and some shows prior on this tour, Wolf gave it his very best. Not many performers have the ability to start their set as full on as Mail does, and when he does you can’t help but to wonder how long he can keep it up… but just when you think it can’t get any better he kicks it up another notch.

Recorded and filmed in digital high definition, this recording captures for the first time Mail's raw talent, limitless passion, incredible avant-garde style and guitar technique that made his performances so legendary. Hendrix and Stevie Ray may be long gone but the spirit lives on….its name is Wolf Mail. ~TONY JAGGERS

In his 10 years of international touring, Canadian born Wolf Mail has developed a very unique yet familiar alternative Blues rock style. His experiences have crafted him a soulful voice often compared to Joe Cocker and a passionate guitar playing reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. In Tom Branson’s own words “A sound that is both somehow familiar and yet very much original”

Traveling and discovering new cultures is an important part of Wolf’s creativity. “I try to soak in my touring experiences in my songwriting and share it with the fans” he recalls, as 2006 will be his fourth tour of the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, Austria, France, Holland, and Belgium. He has also performed or promoted his music in the U.K, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Mexico, Czech Republic, Morocco and New Zealand.

Wolf’s guitar style is very clean, powerful and yet intense. During one of his performances with the Fabulous Thunderbirds at the Narooma Blues festival in Australia, Tony Jagger from the Southern star has said “Words simply cannot describe the intensity and clarity that comes out of this man’s guitar” Mail’s playing is concentrated with no waste, as Linda Fisher quoted in the London Times “Wringing emotions out of every note and making each one count, there is so much more subtlety here than is usually found at the rock end of the spectrum. Mail is way out in front and still traveling!” ”.

The Basement gig was the culmination of an Australian tour that saw the band play in numerous places around Australia. "I didn't actually plan THE BASEMENT SESSION album" Wolf says "but was inspired by fantastic feedback from people about this concert. Many times I heard fans saying 'Your sound is so much more powerful live than in the studio'. So we put their request in action and decided to record the new album in front of a live audience," he says.

"We have taken a completely different approach on this recording" Wolf says. "The process is the same as it would have been if we would have done it in the studio in that it is a 24-track recording with an elaborate mixing process, but I think this has allowed the band to be more spontaneous and passionate".

This is also the first time that Wolf has included a second guitarist playing and singing in his project. “For years I have included a piano or sax player in the recording. I think that adding a second guitar gives the record a more earthy rock vibe. It also gave me a chance to record tracks from some of my favourite musicians, including Peter Green’s “Need your Love” and John Lee Hooker’s “It Serves Me right” .
