It took bluesman Joe Louis Walker 20 years to establish himself, but once he released his debut Cold Is the Night in 1986, he quickly became a staple in contemporary blues. Walker drew upon blues, soul, and gospel in equal measure, a combination that sounded electrifying upon his national debut, but this hybrid also allowed him to play in a variety of settings, both on-stage and on record. Later recordings, such as 1996's The Gift, 2004's New Direction, and 2009's Between a Rock and the Blues offered acclaimed examples of his versatility, leading to a 2013 induction into the Blues Hall of Fame.

Now blues legend Joe Louis Walker is back with "Cold is the Night Reimagined" - a fresh take on his classic album, bringing new life, soul, and fire to every note. Get ready for electrifying guitar work, raw emotion, and the deep blues spirit that only Joe can deliver.

Joe Louis Walker - Preacher And The President

Album: Preacher And The President
Size: 113,2 MB
Time: 48:53
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1998
Styles: Blues, soul-blues
Art: Full

1. Preacher And The President (4:05)
2. Yveline (3:29)
3. Repay My Love (5:04)
4. I'm Not Messin' Around (4:46)
5. Y&T (5:41)
6. Lyin' In The Name Of Love (5:08)
7. Pride Of A Fool (6:47)
8. Uhh! (5:22)
9. Tell The Truth (4:47)
10. My Real Fantasy (3:39)

San Francisco blues pilgrim Joe Louis Walker documents an eclectic career with a landmark album, assembling elements from his productive stabs at Delta and Chicago blues, slide acoustic and funk-rock, motor jazz and gospel. He even throws a taste of social commentary into the mix with the title cut of The Preacher and the President, which is mostly a tribute to (and graduation from) his preferred (and stricter) urban-pulpit forms of late. Sure to be criticized by some as lacking in depth, Walker makes up for it in range, with viable demonstrations of influence by Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and old roommate Mike Bloomfield.

Those in the need of a smidge of convincing should cut directly to the way-down "Uhhh!" and the reassuringly lustful "Yveline," since "Repay My Love" wouldn't offend a fan of easy listening, and the oddly colorless "I Ain't Messin' Around" speaks accurately of itself: it ain't. Too bad - Walker's restraint reminds many blues fans of the glossy filler of Robert Cray rather than the gritty business of Otis Rush or T-Bone Walker, all considered influences of Walker's. A sturdy example of the multiple flavors of the modern blues. /Becky Byrkit, AllMusic

Among those who jammed with him and feature on the record are Johnny Winter, Curtis Salgado, Nick Moss, Tommy Castro, Jason Ricci, Watermelon Slim, and Duke Robillard.

The 11-track live album features songs from Walker’s recent recordings – “Witness To The Blues” and “Between A Rock & The Blues” – and some well-chosen covers. Walker says he’s been asked for years by fans when he’d release another live record. Walker thinks Blues Conspiracy was worth the wait and hopes fans will, as well.
“I would like to thank all the great musicians involved in this project for giving their heart, soul and talent to this collaboration,” says Walker. “This was not about money, ego and so called fame. It was about the music. As you can see, these artists are a mixture of ages and styles.
The one thread running through us all is the blues. For all the fans of live music, what you hear on this CD is what the audience heard at the performances. There are no enhancements or overdubs. In other words, what you hear is what it was and what it is. What a tribute to the quality of all the wonderful musicians involved.”

Joe Louis Walker - Weight Of The World

Size: 111.6 MB
Time: 47:57
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2023
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. The Weight Of The World (4:25)
02. Is It A Matter Of Time? (3:11)
03. Hello, It's The Blues (6:46)
04. Waking Up The Dead (4:32)
05. Don't Walk Out That Door (4:09)
06. Count Your Chickens (3:50)
07. Blue Mirror (6:20)
08. Root Down (3:40)
09. Bed Of Roses (4:38)
10. You Got Me Whipped (6:24)

A unique talent, Joe Louis Walker has never been comfortable restricting himself to one style the music for long, delivering everything from fiery blues-rock to mellow acoustic and everything in between. And he shifts gears frequently on this tasty CD, a highly personal, thought-provoking riff on themes that affect us all.

A six-time Blues Music Award winner with about three dozen albums to his credit, Walker is no stranger to pushing boundaries. While his most recent previous release, Eclectic Electric on Cleopatra, was an excursion in contemporary and soul-blues stylings, this one travels through the emotional wasteland left in our paths after COVID.

It’s a never-boring, silky-smooth package tied with a bow thanks to the 73-year-old San Francisco native’s exceptional guitar skills along with instantly recognizable vocal chops that infuse deep feeling in every measure of every song.

Eric Corne and Joe split writing duties (EC wrote 4, JLW wrote 5 and 1 co-write) on this one, which were captured at The Building in Marlboro, N.Y., not far from JLW’s adopted home in the Hudson River Valley. It was produced by Eric Corne, the mastermind who’s been in the studio with Sugaray Rayford, Walter Trout and John Mayall in recent years. Eric contributed the other tune, shares credit on another and also adds second guitar, percussion and backing vocals.

Walker plays electric, slide and nylon-string guitars throughout and contributes a little harmonica in a lineup that includes Scott Milici on keyboards, Geoff Murfitt on bass, John Medeiros Jr. on drums. They’re augmented by Eddie Jackson on bongos, Eric Gorfain on violin, Mark Pender on trumpet, David Ralicke on sax and Gia Ciambotti does background vocals.

“The Weight of the World,” which opens, is a funky slow-blues shuffle that describes how many of us feel today, living on the other side of the pandemic and finally “adjourned” from isolation. Despite the seeming victory, however, he observes that we’re still burdened with the aftereffects and he wonders whether we’ll learn from our past mistakes or “get in line for the last rotation” and “all burn until we finally adjourn.”

The pace quickens and a horn flourish brightens the open of “Is It a Matter of Time?” It swings atop a heavy two-four beat but expresses exasperation as he wonders if he’ll ever get to enjoy the fruits of he’s been promised in life, finally stating: “Time will tell, I’ve been told. But I don’t know if anybody knows what the future will hold.”

It yields to “Hello, It’s the Blues,” which opens as a quiet ballad with gospel overtones but slowly increases in pace and intensity. A gentle offering that allows the artform to speak its mind, it assures fans that it will always be a source of comfort no matter how tearful and dark the night. Things heat up via “Waking Up the Dead,” which opens with a second-line drumbeat, describes an encounter with the Devil and warns about his tricks, which – if you aren’t careful — will make hopes and dreams slip through your fingers and run down the drain.

The poignant “Don’t Walk Out That Door,” is up next with JLW announcing that if his lady starts packing, he’ll be the one running from their home, and he promises to emulate Daniel in the lion’s den in his efforts to right any wrongs. The funkified “Count Your Chickens” keeps the heat on high as the singer rebuffs an adversary who’s trying to mess with him before giving way “Blue Mirror,” an uptempo rocker that will have you bopping throughout.

“Root Down,” a keyboard- and harp-driven pleaser, finds Joe acknowledging that he’s paying the price for a life lived without planning for the future. It gives way to the stop-time “Bed of Roses,” about a farewell letter discovered under a pillow, before the jazzy closer, “You Got Me Whipped,” announces finally ready to accede to all of his lady’s demands to remain at her side.

One listen to this incisive treatise and you’ll agree with jazz great Herbie Hancock who calls Joe Louis Walker a national treasure. This just might be his best album ever – and that’s saying something! ~Marty Gunther

Joe Louis Walker - In The Morning

Size: 122.7 MB
Time: 52:49
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2002
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Soul
Art: Full

01. You're Just About To Lose Your Clown (5:12)
02. In The Morning (4:20)
03. Joe's Jump (5:02)
04. Leave That Girl Alone (5:20)
05. Where Jesus Leads (3:52)
06. Strange Loving (5:07)
07. Do You Wanna Be With Me (6:13)
08. If This Is Love (I'd Rather Have The Blues) (3:12)
09. 2120 South Michigan Avenue (6:00)
10. Strangers In Our House (8:27)

Rootsier than Robert Cray, more soulful than Jimmie Vaughan, and boasting a gospel background similar to the great Sam Cooke, Joe Louis Walker is a contemporary soul/bluesman who flawlessly and effortlessly mixes his diverse influences. On his first album in three years (and Telarc label debut), Walker proves he's an artist capable of terse, searing guitar solos, as on the R&B "Do You Wanna' Be With Me?"; mid-tempo, jazzy soul such as "Leave that Girl Alone"; or rugged acoustic Delta blues like the appropriate album-closing "Strangers in Our House." Walker -- who began his career playing religious music -- not surprisingly proves himself a more than adequate soul/gospel vocalist in the Al Green vein on the spiritual "Where Jesus Leads." In fact, the Memphis groove is infused through much of this album, with Walker's simmering version of the Stones' "2120 South Michigan Avenue" sounding like a lost Booker T. & the MG's B-side. But he's at his strongest when plowing through gritty, Southern-styled swamp-rocking R&B, as on "Strange Love," the album's strongest track, where he shouts, growls, howls, and testifies like Wilson Pickett in his prime. Walker is in full control throughout, moaning and crooning in a honey-and-grits style that is immediately recognizable. Even when he plays it straight on "Joe's Jump," Walker sounds invigorated, whipping off piercing leads even in a timeworn shuffle style. The opening tracks, "You're Just About to Lose Your Crown" with its bubbling Latin percussion, and the easygoing groove of the title tune smoothly coalesce Walker's soul, blues, and gospel roots. One of the versatile musician's most consistently successful albums, this is convincing proof that Joe Louis Walker is one of the most overlooked and distinctive artists working in the soul/blues genre. ~Hal Horowitz

Andy Watts - Supergroove

Size: 103,1 MB
Time: 43:53
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2020
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. Supergroove (3:25)
02. Living Hand To Mouth (4:01)
03. Straight Shooting Woman (5:53)
04. Burning Deep (Feat. Joe Louis Walker) (5:09)
05. Pack It Up (3:58)
06. Blues Of The Month Club (Feat. Eliza Neals) (4:46)
07. Don't Take My Blues Away (4:43)
08. Don't You Let Me Down (3:55)
09. Raw (4:08)
10. Supernatural (3:50)

Any record emanating from acclaimed swamp-blues master Kenny Neal’s Booga Music label is bound to come with high standards attached. Released this September 4th via said company in cooperation with Vizztone Label Group, Supergroove, by premiere blues Israeli guitarist Andy Watts, is an eye-catching addition to the catalogue. Watts is highly regarded in the blues field, having performed with many of the best–Johnny Winter, Lucky Peterson, and Bernard Allison among them. Supergroove also features the talents of veteran blues master and Grammy nominee Joe Louis Walker, singer-songwriter Eliza Neals, soul singer Roy Young, and a host of top-class backing players. Half of the ten tracks presented here are Watts originals, with the balance of compositions by Freddie King, Joe Louis Walker, Coastin’ Hank and others.

Title-track “Supergroove” is a good representation of the album as a whole; a slithering, smoking blues blast, with hot horns, R&B honks and vamping organ. With a large dose of fun and sparkle, this track will put a smile on the face of even the most sullen listener. It breezes along with a good-time slick-sounding vibe. There’s a sunny sheen to the production, which is bright and clear and balanced to perfection. When needed, the brass is cutting and high, but there’s a large amount of subtlety here, which warrants repeated spins. The organ and percussion, for example, are so nicely integrated that it takes some concentration to pick up on how clever the arrangement is.

The star, of course, is Watt’s guitar wizardry. There are shades of the cutting-edge of Hendrix, but Watts’ influences and capabilities are manifold. He can move from super-slick, boiling-under lines to ringing, stinging solos with remarkable ease and conviction.

The same luminous, classic feel runs throughout the album. On slower cuts, such as the winding “Burning Deep,” Watts sounds equally at home, sparking one-notes, stirring embers with fiery backing-riffs and calling out those wild, mournful blues phrases. His playing is never less than eminently appealing. Although a significant portion of each cut is given over to Watts, he is a player with enough generosity to never overburden or unbalance a song. Joe Louis Walker on vocals is equally expressive, soulful.

The assembled musicians sound as organically united as any you will hear. Horns, organ, bass; they all commit to the groove, calling to mind the total blues-soul of Curtis Mayfield or Isaac Hayes on funky cuts such as “Blues Of The Month Club.” Indeed, the conga-backed “Don’t You Let Me Down” sounds for all the world like a potent mix of Hot Buttered Soul-era Hayes with English blues-rockers The Who. With its rolling drum-breaks, Latin beat, background harmonizing and simple, cutting lyrics, this is a stand-out track on what is a very solid album.

Blues records have a pleasing habit of utilizing straightforward statements of intent for their titles. Supergroove follows that time-honoured fashion and fully lives up to its name. The variety of vocals add much to the listener’s interest. Joe Louis Walker, Eliza Neals, soul-man Roy Young, plus Israeli singers Danny Shoshan and Gadi Altman do a fine job with very different approaches.

Watts and Kenny Neal have conjured here an intriguing and superbly enjoyable set. It’s clear that the Israeli guitarist draws inspiration from a wide canvas and possesses the ability to bring those varied elements together to produce something, that while reminiscent of a host of classic recordings, remains wholly original in and of itself. Whenever I hear such music, my first thought is that I would love to browse through that musician’s record collection. If you are a fan of modern blues, you should certainly consider adding Supergroove to your own. ~Chris Wheatley

13. Way Down (I Won’t Cry No More) (Feat. Stevie Van Zandt) (2:58)
14. Hymn To Him (Feat. Patti Scialfa & Bruce Springsteen) (4:30)

As one of the very few first-generation rock ‘n’ rollers still seriously pursing new avenues of expression, Dion’s Bronx soul is very much in evidence on this new album, a full-tilt blues offering. The blues songs therein are not “covers” nor Dion’s versions of blues standards. These compositions are in fact original blues masterpieces which are destined to become classics. He came up with the music and words for twelve of them and finished those with co-writer Mike Aquilina. The two exceptions are “Hymn To Him” which Dion wrote with Bill Tuohy and “Kickin’ Child,” written with Buddy Lucas.

To tell those stories, Dion recruited help from a few notable friends and admirers. He thought, “I needed to round up the best guitarists and musicians alive and pick them from every generation, every variation of blues.” And that’s just what he did, surrounding himself with those who feel the blues spirit as he does.

The album’s guests include the cream of the contemporary scene’s blues-rooted slingers including Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, Brian Setzer, Sonny Landreth, Samantha Fish, John Hammond Jr., Joe Louis Walker, Rory Block , Jimmy and Jerry Vivino, vintage guitar guru Joe Menza as well as icons Stevie Van Zandt, Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison and Paul Simon. Yes, that’s a whole lot of star power but each participated not because of his or her marquee appeal but because of what each could add musically. The result is one reflective of nuanced devotion to the blues rather than a gratuitous display of individual virtuosity. It’s very much Dion’s album and those bold face names participating are most convincingly there for him.

Long live the King. Four years since the passing of the great B.B. King, his towering influence over the blues world - and beyond - remains undimmed. From the long-standing fans still held spellbound by 1965's classic Live At The Regal album, to the young guitarists adding a shiver of vibrato to an emotive solo, King's music will never be forgotten. And this year, the iconic bluesman's presence is felt stronger than ever, as his spirit imbues a star-studded new album, The Soul Of The King. The term 'legend' doesn't do justice to B.B. King. The eight-decade story of how a Mississippi cotton-picker rose to the heights of the blues - changing the genre forever with his soul-drenched voice and 'one-note' touch - is told by his acclaimed studio catalogue and fabled live shows. Now, as the men who walked alongside him every step of the way for over 35 years, The B.B. King Blues Band writes the next chapter, on an album that salutes King's classic songs and showcases their own. "It's important," nods executive producer Terry Harvey, "to continue what he started." Boasting several world-class songwriters in their ranks, The Soul Of The King finds the lineup supplying material that stands alongside their late leader's catalogue - along with guests that include Joe Louis Walker's soulful tribute on Regal Blues and Kenny Wayne Shepherd's masterful solo on opener Irene Irene. Meanwhile, as King's faithful sidemen, this band of blues lifers have the great man's music under their fingernails, and made a bracing return to his greatest cuts. There's a heartfelt turn from Michael Lee on The Thrill Is Gone. Mary Griffin and Taj Mahal combine their vocal and guitar talents on Paying The Cost To Be The Boss - while Kenny Neal lends poignant vocals and licks to Sweet Little Angel. "Our approach was not to stray too far from the original, but still to make it fresh," says Harvey. "I want the world to remember B.B. and to introduce his music to the youth of today." They might have an illustrious history, but The Soul Of The King reminds us that The B.B. King Blues Band are a lineup moving forward, writing a love-letter to their fallen leader while staking their own claim in the modern era. "When we started this album, we wanted to let the world know the B.B. King Band is live and well," explains Harvey. "And that we are continuing B.B.'s musical legacy".

[ 6:43] 12. Serves Me Right To Suffer

A direct descendant from the traveling bundled artist packages of the '60s right down to its retro "hatch show"-styled cover art, Tommy Castro and his band play host to a relatively diverse assortment of high-energy blues and soul acts. The concept originated on the yearly Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where such musical collaborations are typical. Castro's concept was to take that concept on the road, resulting in this dozen-track live album cherrypicked from various tour stops. It's a rollicking, very plugged-in affair, perhaps not surprisingly geared toward some of Castro's current crop of Alligator labelmates such as Janiva Magness, guitarist Michael Burks, and ex-Little Charlie & the Nightcats frontman-gone-solo Rick Estrin. Still, a handful of non-Alligator names like Debbie Davies, Joe Louis Walker, and "Sista" Monica Parker also appear. The varied collective features youngsters Trampled Underfoot as well as lesser-known veteran Theodis Ealey, both of whom handily hold their own next to the more popular participants. Castro takes lead vocals on four tracks, and he, along with his horn-enhanced band, provide backup for the majority of the other artists. Everyone is at the top of their game with an electricity and vein-popping excitement that can only be generated when musicians feed off each other live. Castro in particular seems to relish his master of ceremonies role, charging through a soulful version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and a sizzling "Serves Me Right to Suffer." The latter suddenly shifts tempos from a cracking slow blues to a driving "Radar Love" boogie beat and displays his sometimes underappreciated guitar skills. Most impressive, and rather unexpected, is the number of females in the lineup, a refreshing change from the typically male-dominated blues field. Not only do guitarist Davies and vocalist Magness turn in some thrilling performances (Magness on a tough, horn-punched, swampily rearranged version of James Brown's "Think"), but Monica Parker's slow blues boils, and Trampled Underfoot's bass-playing lead singer Danielle Schnebelen's sexy/angry vocals will have you checking the liner notes to see who this newcomer is. Estrin adds both humor and harp to the generally guitar-oriented lineup with "My Next Ex-Wife," and Michael Burks' ten-minute grinding blues "Voodoo Spell" will make an instant believer of anyone who might not be familiar with his slashing guitar attack. The disc moves from one highlight to the next with the primary detriment being that it's not a double CD to provide more of what's here. Perhaps volume two is in order. ~Hal Horowitz

More piano-based and jazz-influenced than anything else, West Coast Blues is -- in actuality -- the California style, with all of the genre's main practitioners coming to prominence there, if not actual natives of the state in particular. In fact, the state and the style played host to a great many post-war Texas guitar expatriates, and their jazzy, T-Bone Walker style of soloing would become an earmark of the genre. West Coast blues also features smooth, honey-toned vocals, frequently crossing into urban blues territory. The West Coast style was also home to numerous jump-blues practitioners, as many traveling bands of the 1940s ended up taking permanent residence there. Its current practitioners work almost exclusively in the standard small-combo format.

The late, great John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd caught a lot of crap for their 1980 film The Blues Brothers, mostly because a few ignorant critics misunderstood the Saturday Night Live duos’ cinematic treatment of the blues and R&B as satire rather than as the reverent, heartfelt homage that the original BB skit and the resulting movie were meant to be.

Regardless of a few bad reviews, and studio concerns about its appeal to white audiences, The Blues Brothers would score $100+ box office worldwide, spawn an equally-misunderstood but probably unnecessary sequel, yield a couple of hit record albums, and introduce its (mostly white) audience to dynamic performances by great talents like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, John Lee Hooker, and James Brown.

Flash forward a few decades and the two Blues Brothers movies have come to be considered as cult classics, resulting in a long-running radio program hosted by Aykroyd and a full-time touring band comprised of musicians from the movies. On October 6th, 2017 Severn Records will release The Last Shade of Blue Before Black, a new album by the Original Blues Brothers Band. Featuring bona fide rock ‘n’ blues legends like guitarist Steve Cropper and saxophonist “Blue Lou” Marini (both from the original film) as well as notable musical guests like R&B singer Eddie Floyd, guitarists Joe Louis Walker and Matt “Guitar” Murphy, keyboardists Paul Shaffer (an SNL alumni) and Dr. John as well as Blues Brothers 2000 star Joe Morton.

In a press release for the new album, “Blue Lou” Marini says, “Had anyone told me in 1978 that in 2017 I would still be traveling around the world and playing with the Blues Brothers’ Band, I would have said they were out of their minds. But, amazingly here we are with a new CD and still playing all over the world. This album is a true labor of love and I’m so proud of the organic way it came about. We really wanted to honor our history and to include some of our favorite musicians that we’ve worked with and loved over the years. We have the legends, Eddie Floyd and Dr. John, plus our original band leader, Paul Shaffer and the great bluesman Joe Louis Walker.”

The Last Shade of Blue Before Black was produced by Marini, Cropper, and the Original Blues Brothers Band and recorded by Jay Messina at IQII Studios in Hoboken, NJ. The album’s track list is a heady collection of original material and cover songs by such roots ‘n’ blues artists as Delbert McClinton, Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Floyd, and James Brown. “We wanted to present some new original material and do some tunes that hearkened to our past,” says Marini. “This is a live CD, with everyone recording at once, mostly first or second takes and live vocals and solos. The only overdubs were some baritone sax parts and a few minor fixes.”

Concluding, Marini states “I’ve often said that the OBBB is the world’s greatest part-time job because of you, our fans. We’ve gotten to see the world and enjoy it in your company. We’ve eaten and drank with you, especially the latter, and you have treated us like kings. Enjoy this music and for God’s sake, PLAY IT LOUD!”
