Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson arrived in Chicago as a young man during the mid 50s, when the West Side guitar style (which mixed stinging single-note leads and powerful distorted chords -- because their small bands couldn't afford both a lead and rhythm guitar player -- that influenced folks ranging from Eric Clapton to Mark Knopfler) was being developed by Magic Sam and Otis Rush.

Johnson served as a sideman for both Magic Sam and Muddy Waters, and remains one of the best living West Side bluesfolk, a charismatic man, powerful guitarist and soulful singer. He toured the world with Muddy Waters' band, and shared the stage with the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers and Johnny Winter. Since becoming a solo artist, he has also performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jerry Garcia, and Bonnie Raitt. He even made a guest appearance in the Blues Brothers movie.

Plainfield Slim's second album "When The Devil Hits Home" is already receiving airplay world wide. From Canada to Croatia to the USA, DJ's around the world are spinning Slim songs Dirty Girl, Moan, Hideout, etc. on a regular rotation. Produced again in Lo-Fi by Doughboys guitarist Gar Francis (Black Sheep, Queen Of Your Dreams) this time Plainfield Slim has used his live band The Groundhawgs for support. After the success of the first album, "Another Mule In The Barn", Slim has switched from playing all the instruments himself to using the talents of Lee Fink on slide guitar, Rocco Scavone on drums, Mike Caruso on bass, and Myke Scavone on harmonica. With hypnotic grooves in the vein of John Lee Hooker and RL Burnside "When The Devil Hits Home" has more of a Mississippi Delta Juke Joint feel to it that makes you want to kick off your shoes and shake your ass around the shack. ~"The Voice of Original Garage Blues" Mopromo

As long as the world hurts, the blues will be present. Meet A Lien Nation, a dynamic band here to to help spread some love through music and storytelling. Pulling from the greats and writing music that maintains a strong message or concept along with the voicing of blues/rock n roll guitar, intuitive deep bass, and eloquently phrased drumming. The goal of the music is growth and spontaneity; which is why they are known as a “live experience”. They reciprocate their environment and cater to the hearts of the listeners. A Lien Nation is rooted in the blues and rock n roll genres but prefers the term “Outlaw Blues”. Sometimes the blues is happy, sometimes it is angry, and sometimes it is downright sad. Regardless of the subject matter, A Lien Nation is sure to entertain both on a sonic level, and also as a visual performance in style and class. Cheers.

A LIEN NATION (ALN) was born in April of 2011. Based on a vision of Christopher Haley. He was determined to create/pursue a new genre of music. Raised by the biker community, he grew up listening to the blues, and rock legends such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Chris's vision would blend the cool, sexy rhythm of the blues with fiery sound of 70's inspired groovin rock. He would call this music "Outlaw Blues".

And so it began, in April 2012, Chris Haley began meeting his 1st band members of what would be called A Lien Nation. By the end of the month they had become a 5 piece with sometimes special guests guitar legend Sammy Drain, and Todd Duncan of the Crazy 8's. By February 2013 Chris had gone through many band members to find the RIGHT band mates. And by February 2013, the previous 5 piece had become a 3 piece with all new members and Chris as the only original member. With this change came a new sound, a new energy, a new band... it was the BEST A Lien Nation had ever sounded. With front man, Chris Haley on the guitar, Casey Kunning on the bass, and John Cave rocking on the drums, people went nuts for their outlaw blues! This began the new era for ALN. Their show offers went from great to amazing, they recorded and released a new album, and some of their musical dreams came true. This IS the new era for ALN.

Carolyn Fe Blues Collective offers up the Blues in all its shades, full band or acoustic trio/duo setup. Carolyn Fe Blues Collective has the unique ability to serve it's audiences with highly charged emotions – From the sweet, purity love's first kiss to the raunchy edge of a woman scorned, all the way to the tease of languid sexiness.
Having launched their second CD entitled “Original Sin” to packed houses on two nights in 2011, this independent blues band continues to establish its presence in the Canadian Blues scene. Cashbox Canada's review claim that the band is "evolutionary with its blues fingerprint".

Their first CD entitled “100%” (released in 2009) joined the play lists of various online and on-air radio stations worldwide and continue to receive positive feedback as the songs remain alive with the addition of new tunes from their recent album.

A highly versatile, well-rounded performer, Carolyn Fe possesses the deep soul of an artist who has lived on the fringe for most of her life, and made the most of it as the true innovator she is, giving her music and lyrics an insight and depth that cannot be imitated and must be heard. She produces original material that contains lyrics with highly charged emotions that only the Blues can surrender – from extreme loss and anger to love-gone-bad or the languid sexiness of a hot summer night.

Backed by veteran musicians who’ve played with the likes of Percy Sledge, Fat Boy Slim and Seal, the band’s delivery has phrasing that at evokes deep sensations from the begging for love, the hard-core-in-your-face of truth denied or the dreamy allure of pure seduction.

My story is one of good fortune, struggle and perseverance. Born in North America to a family who had fled the pogroms of Eastern Europe and settled in Chicago, the expectation was for me to grow up to be a businessman, doctor or lawyer, but my destiny lay elsewhere.

My mother’s beautiful hands, with crimson fingernails clicking faintly on the keyboard of our Wurlitzer baby grand piano, playing “The Anniversary Song” as I sat on her lap was my first musical magic moment. By the age of five I was totally into the four-handed boogie/blues sessions with my uncles, one a corporate lawyer, the other a businessman, two fabulous blues/jazz pianists eager to share their enthusiasm with me. I could have absorbed the importance of their positions and tried to emulate that, instead I fell in love with music. Because of this obvious attraction my parents signed me up for piano lessons, but, being a kid who needed to move, baseball, basketball and football always took precedence. With or without lessons I always liked to write my own songs on the piano but, when I received a guitar at the age of twelve, I discovered the fun of writing lyrics as well.

My professional career started with a teenage rock band, “The Tools”, playing covers and my original material at schools, parties and clubs. This morphed into Michael and Lee, a duo of myself and the bass player, we recorded a single, “It’s You I’m Thinking Of”, for Earic Records, a subsidiary of Chess. It was great fun to be sitting at school, plugged into my transistor radio, waiting to hear it played on WLS, the biggest rock station in Chicago, where it was often the most requested song of the night due to the repeated telephone calls from everybody in my high school.

Body & Soul has undertaken the huge task of issuing all of John Lee Hooker's recorded work in chronological order, beginning with this double-disc set, which includes Hooker's earliest Detroit recordings, kicking off with "Rocks," tracked on June 12, 1948, in a little studio behind Elmer Barbee's record shop on Lafayette Street. Most of the sides here were recorded by Bernie Besman at United Sound Studios in Detroit and were leased to Modern Records in Los Angeles, although Besman did release some of them on his own Sensation Records. Hooker's first official single, "Sally Mae" b/w "Boogie Chillen," went to the top spot on the R&B charts in 1948 on the strength of its B-side, which became Hooker's signature tune. Most of the tracks here are archival in interest, drawn from scratchy-sounding 78s, and it is primarily collectors who will be interested in this first installment in Body & Soul's grand undertaking. ~Review by Steve Leggett

“Long Road Home tells the story of my journey to find the true meaning of the word “Home”. The songs are forged out of the transition from living in London for 10 years then suddenly moving back to Australia. The change was driven by some brutal and unfortunate circumstances, which is always cause for reflection, but life is never all good or all bad and as I found my feet back in Australia my journey gave me “silver lining” moments which culminated in the formation of the friendships that would eventually come together to make this record.

They say ‘home is where the heart is’. Home is my friends and family to whom I am eternally grateful, regardless of time and distance. Home is knowing I can be myself regardless of what anyone else thinks. Home is a state of mind, it is the ball of light in my chest I have learned to go into and grow each time I play. Home is the stage on which I stand that night, the flash of light between everything else, wherever I am in the world. And the long road that leads me there is my journey. The subject matter takes in all the relationship shifts and the emotional rollercoaster that any major life change will drive but specifically tells the story of my move back to Australia and the process of making a new Home again here.”

Boasting fellow Chicago blues dynamo James Cotton on both harmonica and lead vocals, The Blues Never Die! is one of Otis Spann's most inspired albums. When this session was recorded for Prestige's Bluesville subsidiary in 1964, Spann was still best known for playing acoustic piano in Muddy Waters' band. But The Blues Never Die! (which Fantasy reissued on CD in 1990 on its Original Blues Classics imprint) shows that he was as great a leader as he was a sideman. From Willie Dixon's "I'm Ready" (a Chess gem Spann had played numerous times with Waters) and Elmore James' "Dust My Broom" to Cotton's spirited "Feelin' Good" and Spann's dark-humored "Must Have Been the Devil," Spann and Cotton enjoy a very strong rapport on this consistently rewarding date. ~ Alex Henderson

Recorded in Chicago, November 21, 1964. Orignally released on Prestige 7391.

Otis Spann (piano, vocals), James Cotton (harmonica, vocals), James Madison, "Dirty Rivers" [Muddy Waters] (guitars), Milton Rector (bass) and S.P. Leary (drums).

W.C. Spencer - 2 albums: Blues Explorer / Bluescat

Baltimore-area bluesman W.C. Spencer plays guitar, harmonica, drums, and organ and sings on his recordings, and his live shows are a spectacle, as he plays drums, guitar, and sings all at the same time, not unlike Mr. Satan of the Satan & Adam blues duo, who recorded for a variety of blues labels in the 1990s. Using an invention of his own creation, an eight-piece Alectroset hybrid drum kit that he plays with just one foot, Spencer can play an organist's bass pedals with the other foot. He plays all the instruments while singing the blues.

Spencer launched his performing career in 1974, after graduating from Lynchburg College in Virginia. Through his performing career, he's had plenty of inspiration from unique guitarists like Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. Spencer opened shows and shared stages with both of them during the 1970s and '80s. Spencer began playing guitar in his native Baltimore as a ten-year-old and quickly took his cues from people like Libba Cotten to teach himself acoustic guitar. He wrote his first original composition as a 14-year-old, and by the time he was 15 he got his first electric guitar. In high school he formed his first band, the Heathens, who specialized in British blues and rock & roll bands like the Rolling Stones and the Animals.

After four years in college in Virginia with no degree, Spencer returned to Maryland and put together a blues trio. But when his two partners on bass and drums were unable to tour with him because of day jobs and family commitments, Spencer began experimenting with a harmonica rack and a tambourine on his foot. Working with a University of Virginia engineering student, he created a rudimentary drum kit and hi-hat that he could play with his foot while playing guitar and harmonica. As he continued to hone his craft and perfect his sound, he added a foot bass pedal synthesizer as well as snare and crash and ride cymbals to supplement what he was doing on drums with his right foot.

Spencer toured extensively through the late '70s and early '80s, opening shows for Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Merle Haggard, and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. He returned to Baltimore in 1983 and earned his college degree at age 33. He worked a procession of conventional jobs through the 1980s but also developed a substance abuse problem. W.C. married the girlfriend who helped him overcome his alcoholism in 1991 and moved to rural Maryland. After a job layoff in 1994, Spencer recorded his first album, Bluescat, accompanied on some tracks by Hammond B-3 organists Tommy Lepson and Marty Canelli.

His second album for Catscan Records, Over Time, includes a blues tune from each of the ten decades of the 20th century as well as a smattering of original songs. He covers the likes of Muddy Waters, Albert King, Tampa Red, and W.C. Handy on the album. Spencer toured extensively up and down the East Coast based on the strength of his second album, dazzling audiences with his multifaceted live show and his sheer dexterity in being able to play all his instruments simultaneously. Spencer's most recent album is 2005's Blues Explorer. Here, he tackles well-known covers like "Kansas City," "Key to the Highway," and "Worried Life Blues," but also gives fans spry originals like "I Said the Blues." ~bio by Richard Skelly

DEEP TEXAS BLUES featuring ZAC HARMON, FINIS TASBY, ANSON FUNDERBURGH and JAMES GOODE… Texan James Goode describes himself as an “old rascal and beat-up coach”, but this Rockabilly Hall-Of-Fame inductee, songwriter, bass player, and creator of the Ruff Kutt Blues Band certainly knows how to field one hell of a Blues team. THAT’S WHEN THE BLUES BEGINS features fourteen songs written or co-written by Goode, performed by world class Bluesmen including vocalist/guitarist Zac Harmon, vocalist Finis Tasby, and producer/guitarist Anson Funderburgh.

The first Ruff Kutt Blues Band album, Mill Block Blues (2011), garnered critical raves and was so successful that Goode was able to donate $10,000 of proceeds to the Blues Foundation’s HART Fund, providing relief to Blues musicians in need. When he decided to do a follow up, it went without saying that the first call would go out to Texas Blues guitar hero Anson Funderburgh, who anchored the first CD. Anson was quick to sign on to produce the new CD, and soon they brought in internationally acclaimed Blues heavyweights Zac Harmon and Finis Tasby to form the nucleus of the team for THAT’S WHEN THE BLUES BEGINS. Rounding things out are Wes Starr on drums, Ron Jones on saxophone, and keyboardist/engineer Gentleman John Street.

This all-star aggregation hits a deep Blues groove and delivers Goode’s songs with the assured, relaxed intensity of seasoned pros. Sadly, these sessions are the last recordings Finis Tasby completed before suffering a debilitating stroke in December, 2012.

King. Shawn’s flamingcheese debut and his 2nd CD LAND OF 1,000 DREAMS is a self produced album of original material that is sure to establish him as one of best guitar players in the country! The CD’s title track reflects his southern influences and the first single from the CD “Big Time” is a high energy tune featuring smokin’ guitar and Memphis style horns. “Bug And Shawn” takes the blues into today’s sound featuring a hip hop vocalist.

With the release of Soul Fixin' Man in 1994, Allison's first domestic album in 20 years, he announced his return. "Fever and chills performances," said Guitar Player, "ferocious solos combine the wisdom of a master storyteller with the elegance of B.B. King, the elasticity of Buddy Guy, and the big sting of Albert King." After three mammoth U.S. tours, America once again was paying attention to Luther Allison. Allison followed up with Blue Streak, and the praise and accolades poured in. "A sonic roar as soulful as his gospel-shout vocals," raved the Washington Post. "Luther Allison's latest is nothing short of a masterpiece by a master," reported Blues Revue. Continued touring brought Allison before raving fans around the world, as he brought his band from the San Francisco Blues Festival to New York's Central Park Summerstage, with all stops in between. With Reckless, Allison reached even greater heights. Guitar World said, "Reckless in the best sense of the word, dancing on a razor's edge, remaining just this side of out-of-control. Hard-driving, piercing West Side Chicago single-note leads with a soul base and a rock edge."

Throughout it all, Allison delivered one show-stopping performance after another. His boundless energy and fierce guitar attack combined to make him a blues superstar who reached rock fans like no bluesmen since Freddie King and Albert Collins. When the news broke that Allison had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in July of 1997, the blues world was shocked. When he died just four weeks later, they were devastated. Without a doubt, Luther Allison's death robbed music fans of one of the most exciting and popular blues performers ever. With Live In Chicago, Allison lives on, as he tears through the songs with the single-minded desire to give everything he has to his audience. While listening to the album, fans can immerse themselves in the explosive power of Luther Allison's music and experience the redemptive force of his legendary performances.

Maybe you've heard Queen Esther singing the blues with James Blood Ulmer or Elliott Sharp. Maybe you saw her singing jazz in the theater production of Harlem Song. Either way, her proper debut album Talkin' Fishbowl Blues will take you by surprise. This record ROCKS! In her bio, she described her sound as "If Keith fired Mick and decided to let Tina Turner front the band with Gram Parsons riding shotgun," and that's actually right on the mark. There's a decidedly Stonesy swagger to many of these tunes with just a touch of twang, and Queen Esther shows herself to be just as versatile a vocalist as Tina, covering not only the lead vocals but nearly all the background vocals as well. She's got a great voice (four octave range), and maybe it's her theater background, but all her vocals (even the backing vox) are filled with passion and brimming with personality. She even adopts something close to Mick's country honk for the title cut. Queen Esther writes about what she knows: mostly being a young woman transplanted to New York City and relationships, but she's a keen observer and turns some great phrases throughout. The band is rock & roll basics: guitars, bass and drums -- and more guitars, and they play with just the right mixture of being together but playing loose. Jack Sprat's production is crisp but not glossy, and there's a freshness to the performances that implies they didn't play these songs to death hoping for the "perfect" take. There are guitars all over the place, including some tasty lap steel on "Taster's Choice," nice wet sounding tremolo guitar on "Get It Right This Time" and patented Keith Richards' riffs on "Talkin' Fishbowl Blues." "New York City" is built on an irresistibly funky groove, with sassy backup vocals and twangy slide guitars all over the top while Queen Esther just belts it out. But just when you think you might have Queen Esther's "Black Americana" sound figured out, she offers up the a cappella, gospel-flavored "Help Me," where she sings at least four parts, harmonizing with herself. Then she turns around and gives a straight reading of "Stand By Your Man"(!), even supplying her own cornball country choir for the backing vocals to close out the album. You'll have to set your preconceptions aside for this one. Queen Esther is active in the theater and performance art worlds, sings the blues, sings jazz with the JC Hopkins Biggish Band, and now has offered up a great rock & roll album. Is there anything this woman can't do? ~Review by Sean Westergaard

"Not really a blues album but aptly tagged as "Black Americana", Manhattan-via-Austin super side-woman Queen Esther melds roots, pop and R&B in a way Lucinda Williams, Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow never could on their best days." Amplifier

Produced by Queen Esther, "The Other Side" is her latest release – a sprawling sonic wonderland that walks with a soulful twang, full of feeling and drenched in the blues. Ultimately, this is an aural testimony to the music that raised her and continues to inform her deeply held conviction that music shouldn’t be divisive.

"You'll have to set your preconceptions aside for this one. Queen Esther is active in the theater and performance art worlds, sings the blues, sings jazz with the JC Hopkins Biggish Band and now has offered up a great rock & roll album. Is there anything this woman can't do?" - AllMusic

Les reprises de You upset Me baby et Early In The Morning sont des must. ~JOEL BIZON

It includes a number of players who all are part of the Bluescaster's family and includes guitarist Brian Delaney. This fourth album also marks the return to the original lineup with Kerry Adams on guitar after a 5 year hiatus.

The always solid Phil Ryski on harp/keys and guitar and the killer rhythm section of Harry Rodman on drums and Doug Wolgat on bass have melded into one of the tightest touring acts out there.

Don't miss out - this album has a real diversity of style. All Bluescaster's but with a great twist of influences!

How’s this for blues pedigree: born to sharecroppers in Duncan, Mississippi, in 1939, Eddie C Campbell was raised on Chicago’s West Side, alongside the likes of Magic Sam, Willie Dixon, Little Walter and others. Shortly after moving to the windy city, his mother brought him to the 1125 Club on Madison Avenue to meet legendary bluesman Muddy Waters, who told Eddie he could sit in with the band if he learned to play. Four years later and with guitar in hand, Eddie returned to the club, played a scorching rendition of “Still a Fool” and earned a spot on the bandstand. He was twelve years old. The rest, you could say, is blues history: his teen’s years on the nightclub circuit honing his chops with such top-players as Luther Allison, Magic Sam, Big Monroe, Willie Buckner and Pee Wee Madison.Eddie soon became one of the west side’s most popular and flamboyant musicians, riding around on a purple motorcycle, sporting a red Fender Jazzmaster guitar, learning karate and – all music aside – wining sixteen knockouts as an amateur boxer.

Campbell toured with Otis Rush and Mighty Joe Young before becoming band director for Jimmy Reed. He visited Europe in 1979 with the Amercian Blues Legends Tour; the audiences proved so warm to his music that he moved overseas in 1984, living first in England and then later in Holland. Campbell ended up in Germany, where he accompanied a travelling theatre production of William Faulkner’s Requiem for a Nun for three years, writing songs and playing acoustic guitar.

By the time he returned to Chicago in 1992, Eddie C Campbell had established a playing style all his own: jaunty, irresistibly danceable rhythms overlaid with lithe guitar lines, often placed so tightly in the pocked of the beat that his lead guitar almost double as a rhythm instrument.

Eddie C. Campbell (vocals, guitar); Elijah Blue (vocals, guitar); Johnny Mars (harmonica); Rinus Groeneveld, Tommy Jones (tenor saxophone); Angelo Verploegen, Saskia Laroo (trumpet); Jan Voeten (trombone); Han VanDam, Al Copley (piano); Olaf Keus, John McColgan (drums).

Ann Rabson - In A Family Way

While Ann Rabson has made a name for herself as a member of the popular blues trio, Saffire, it's quite a revelation to hear her solo. Whereas Saffire dazzles with multiple vocalists and the occasional risqué number, Rabson reveals herself as more than another revivalist jumping on the acoustic blues wagon. Sure, she can write within the tradition ("I'd Rather Be Alone"), but she's also fully capable of turning in a fresh version of a venerable warhorse like "See See Rider." Rabson's able to pull this off time and again thanks to her deeply felt vocals combined with an excellent backup band. She has a rich, penetrating singing style all her own, and even when singing a swinging upbeat song like "Little Red Wagon," she never sounds like she's showing off. Rabson also plays piano, and she's joined by a crack band featuring violinist Mimi Rabson and trombonist Dave Harris. Mimi Rabson provides a nice, bluesy difference on pieces like "I Can't Get My Mind Off of You," while Harris adds a spunky spontaneity to "I Want to Hop on Your Harley." If In a Family Way seems to sag a bit toward the end, it's probably because it's hard to maintain the kind of intensity Rabson displays forever. In a Family Way will please anyone who demands that his or her blues be delivered with feeling. ~Ronnie D. Lankford Jr

This is an interesting little set made up of two sessions (held in 1983 and 1986) that combined Chicago blues players with Scandinavian blues musicians. The Chicago players included S.P. Leary, Bob Stroger, and Sunnyland Slim. While the concept is a noble one, it's an overwrought exercise full of guitar playing that imitates Otis Rush and Albert Collins, harmonica playing that mimics Lazy Lester and Little Walter, and over-the-top vocals from the Scandinavian blues musicians that need every bit of echo lavished on them. ~Cub Koda

Although it's pressed on an Austrian logo, Eddie Shaw's rollicking recent disc was waxed in his Chicago hometown with the Wolf Gang (son Vaan on guitar, longtime bassist Shorty Gilbert, and drummer Tim Taylor) summoning up solid support. Once again, Shaw tackles some interesting subjects -- he fantasizes about "Blues in Paris," and decried being "Home Alone," and searches out an endorsement deal with "Motel Six" via his sprightly musical tribute to the budget chain. ~ Bill Dahl

06. N'awlins (3:52)

With Nawlins Callin’, King has created a suite of songs inspired by the rich musical culture of the old French Quarter, conveying aspects of romance, melancholy and wonderment with fresh arrangements and melodies that trumpets a rebirth. King and his musicians have succeeded in conjuring a fresh adult pop album laced with authentic jazz, classical and blues sensibilities. King re-invents some classics like “You Don’t Know Me.” Among the many treasures of Nawlins Callin’ is a funky new rendition of "Basin Street" in which his guitar sores the way Louis Armstrong’s trumpet once did. The multi-talented King plays piano and sings accompanied by a string quartet on the beautifully arranged original composition “When You’re A Clown,” an instant standard which is sure to be covered by other artists for years to come. ~Review by Tammy26
