Lee Sankey was born in London, England in 1970. He was gripped by the harmonica when he saw James Hunter (then playing as Howlin’ Wilf) playing in the basement of Gossips in Soho, London in October 1988. Until that moment Lee wasn't interested in music, although his mother owned a huge record collection (she worked for CBS record label in the 60's). But Lee was so taken with the sound of the bluesharp, he bought one the next day. He developed his technique and interests with help from Paul Lamb. Other inspirational figures included Kim Wilson, Little Walter, Sonny Terry, William Clarke and Sonny Boy Williamson. Lee now plays guitar as well as diatonic and chromatic harmonicas.

He formed his first band called the Cool Grey 5ives while studying Industrial Design at University in the Midlands and in 1993 he won the National Harmonica League Blues Harmonica Championship, leading to a sponsorship deal from Hohner and appearances on several radio shows and blues festivals. In the same year, following graduation, his intention was to pusue a design career, but he toured Canada with Grammy winner Alannah Myles and Nine Below Zero. In 1997 he formed the Lee Sankey Group and went on to release two critically acclaimed albums (“My Day Is Just Beginning” in 1999 and “Tell Me There’s a Sun” in 2003) through his own record label. He toured all over Europe playing world class venues and festivals such as Ronnie Scott’s (London), The New Morning (Paris) and the North Sea Jazz Festival. "I have been graced with some incredible musicians in my band including Ian Siegal, Matt Schofield and David Midgen".

Sankey stopped touring in 2004 to focus on his business career (he designed footwear for Puma, clothing concepts for Yamaha and worked in operational and strategic roles in digital, technology and telecoms), however his passion for the harmonica, guitar, songwriting and music in general remains undiminished. He regularly posts videos on his YouTube channel which includes live performances and blues harmonica lessons. Between 2009 – 2010 he developed a service design for Skype Business which included an innovative diagnostic tool and he completed several projects for Skype whilst working at Voxygen. In 2012 Lee Sankey formed a new band and performed again.

Lee Sankey - 2 albums: My Day Is Just Beginning / She's Not Alone

I became gripped by the harmonica when I was 18 after seeing James Hunter at the Gossips Nightclub in London's Soho. The guitar followed about a year later when I saw BB King at the Hammersmith Apollo. Both were life changing experiences. My early ambitions always involved a career design not music, but when I graduated in 1993 I decided to pursue the crazy idea after doing a tour with Alannah Myles who had recently won a grammy. I went onto release two albums and one EP before stopping touring professionally in 2004 to focus on my business career. You can find them on Amazon and iTunes. I had the privilege to have had some amazing players in my band including Matt Schofield and Ian Siegal who have gone onto become international stars.

Today my main musical outlets are my YouTube and Vimeo channels where I provide harmonica tutorials and courses. I've had over 1.2 million views on YouTube and my subscriber base is approaching 8000. I hope to make further albums in the future, if I can find the time....
