Start spreading the news - New York's hottest punk-blues collective are back in business. If you didn't catch them first time round, then it's high time you got to know Jane Lee Hooker better. Individually, the five members have pedigree to burn, turning heads and tearing up stages in seminal bands from Nashville Pussy to Bad Wizard. But when Dana 'Danger' Athens (vocals), Hail Mary Z (bass), Melissa 'Cool Whip' Houston (drums), Tracy 'High Top' (guitar) and Tina 'T Bone' Gorin (guitar) hooked up in 2012, they swore a blood pact to take Jane Lee Hooker all the way.

"We're a gang," say the lineup."We're a family." Now, as a twist in the tail of 2017, second album Spiritus finds Jane Lee Hooker writing their own entry into the great rock 'n' roll songbook. "Spiritus is almost entirely original music written by the band as a unit," they explain, "which has been really exciting and really gratifying. We write so naturally well together, it's been pretty effortless. We wanted to have an 'album' that people would listen to from beginning to end," explain the lineup, "and find something to love about every song."

Jane Lee Hooker is a band of five women from New York City who infuse the grit and attitude of their hometown into the blues. With double lead guitars, a heavy rhythm section, and soul-scouring vocals, JLH honor the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Winter, Big Mama Thornton, and other blues greats.

JLH’s debut, No B!, was self-released in November 2014, and they’re currently working on a new album. Notable stages JLH has graced include Highline Ballroom and Irving Plaza (NYC), El Cid (L.A.), Pappy & Harriet’s (Pioneertown, CA), the Knitting Factory (Brooklyn), Dogfish Head Brewery (Rehoboth Beach, DE), and Antone’s Record Shop (Austin, TX). They’ve shared bills with Bernard Fowler, The Wailers, Death Valley Girls, Supersuckers, Hellbound Glory, Frightwig, Whiskey Shivers, Steepwater Band, and the Bluebonnets (feat. Kathy Valentine, ex Go-Go’s), among others.

JLH are by no means new to the game. Between the five band members, they have decades of experience playing, recording, and touring both nationally and internationally. Individually, the members of JLH have played for thousands of fans while sharing bills with the likes of Motörhead, MC5, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Deep Purple.

So how’d this gang of pros find each other? Guitarists Hightop and Tina honed their love of blazing dual leads in Helldorado in the ’90s. From there, Hightop joined Nashville Pussy, Tina joined Bad Wizard, and both women toured the world. But when their time with those bands ended, they realized they really missed the rush of trading guitar solos with one another, leaving audiences howling with joy.

But first they needed a band. They quickly recruited Mary, who had played bass with Hightop in the punk band the Wives. Melissa sat behind the drum kit and got the nod before she even finished slamming out the first song of her audition. And no singer in the entire city can bring a crowd to its knees harder or faster than Dana Danger Athens.

Nominated for The Deli’s Best of 2014 Poll for Emerging NYC Artists, JLH is a blistering blues monster capable of whispering in your ear before stomping on your heart.
