The Ford Blues Band - The Butterfield/Bloomfield Concert

Album: The Butterfield/Bloomfield Concert
Size: 114,1 MB
Time: 49:28
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2006
Styles: Blues
Art: Full

1. Killing Floor (3:35)
2. East/West Redux (8:52)
3. Groovin' Is Easy (3:37)
4. I Got A Mind To Give Up Living (7:27)
5. Lovin' Cup (5:08)
6. Peter's Trip (5:48)
7. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (4:36)
8. Blues For MB (10:22)

Even though the Ford Blues Band has never had a problem putting across mediocre material, songwriting is not one of the outfit's strong points. With successful studio albums covering both Michael Bloomfield and his old boss Paul Butterfield already in Ford Blues Band's catalog, the group plays to its strengths with a live recording, cherrypicking the best songs from both and adding the raw energy that live concerts typically generate. The result is a crackling disc that is not surprisingly a showcase for guitarists Robben Ford, Chris Cain and Volker Strifler as well as harmonica ace Andy Just. Despite liner notes that frustratingly don't specify which of the three guitarists plays lead on the tracks - it only states which side of the speakers the musician is relegated to, which can be confusing - or the dates of the recordings, this is a rollicking performance as the Ford Blues Band charges through the songs with passion and energy.

Out of the eight tracks, only six pertain directly to the titular stars, with "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" (aping a version by Butterfield) and a ten minute, slow blues workout "Blues for MB" a bit on the generic side. The performances of these are hot, but it does detract slightly from the concept and there were plenty of other tunes more directly associated with the musicians that could have been chosen. Regardless, there are too few bands that even attempt to perform Butterfield's classic "East West" instrumental (here titled "East/West Redux") so even if, at only nine minutes, this is on the short side (the original ran 13), it's a thrilling reminder of the groundbreaking aspects of Butterfield and Bloomfield in their prime.

The group raids the Electric Flag catalog for its Bloomfield covers of "Killing Floor" and "Groovin' Is Easy" and adds a small horn section to replicate the originals. Their version of Bloomfield's obscure "Peter's Trip" also prominently employs sax and trumpet for a sort of Blood, Sweat & Tears approach. It is the most unusual and least bluesy selection here. Robben Ford's vocals throughout are serviceable at best, but it's his guitar that really sizzles, especially on the seven-minute version of "I Got a Mind to Give Up Living." While none of this will make fans forget the originals, it's a consistently enjoyable and well-recorded effort and the band's hearts were obviously in it. Hopefully this will inspire some new listeners to check out the sources. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Here We Go!, the first album from the Ford Blues Band, is a propulsive, energetic collection of Chicago blues with a twist. The twist is in the group's passion for improvisation, where they can turn standard three-chord progressions into unexpectedly jazzy interludes which add real meat to their music. The result is a thrilling, exciting debut from a fresh, promising combo. ~Review by Thom Owens

Recorded in August of 1998 in Baden-Baden, Germany, at Ohne Filter, the Ford Blues Band took the stage and proceeded to rock the house. The music itself is fantastic! That was the real treat here. The music. At one point I closed my eyes and lost myself in the tunes. With Patrick Ford – drums, Andy Just – harp and vocals, Volker Striffler – guitar and vocals, and Dewayne Pate – bass and vocals, the band delivers solid blues rock to an appreciative audience. European audiences seem to crave the blues in every form. The Ohne Filter blues fans are no exception to the rule.

Choice moments include “I Smell Trouble”, with Volker Striffler delivering a soulful guitar and vocal performance, and “Crazy For My Baby”, with Dewayne Pate breaking loose a killer bass solo. A nice little extra on this DVD is an interview with producer Michael Au. The impetus for his blues programs came when Au realized there was a clear lack of quality music shows on television. His vision, obviously, was realized and quite successful. Au’s reputation has led him to be the go-to guy when it comes to bands touring Europe and wishing to create a live performance video.

The Ford Blues Band - Breminale '92

1. Take Out Some Insurance (5:17)
2. Oh Why (8:54)
3. Dance With Me (7:04)
4. Long As I Have You (7:09)
5. Self Preservation (9:02)
6. I Ain't Got You (10:34)
7. Walking By Myself (6:40)

It was 1969 when Patrick Ford first came onto the San Francisco blues scene with brother Robben Ford. During the 70's he spent time working with his brothers Robben and Mark in the Charles Ford Band and then on the road with Charlie Musselwhite. This was also when he first had the pleasure of working and hanging with many of the blues greats like Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins, and Jimmy Witherspoon. In the 80's Patrick started his own modern blues label, Blue Rock'lt Records, with great releases by the likes of Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, the Charles Ford Band, and Chris Cain.

In 1988, Patrick decided it was time to break away from the position of being a side man for others and try out his skills as a band leader. He decided to put together a band that would recognize and respect its individual members talents and at the same time become a conduit for his own ideas and arrangements. It was definitely going to be his band. The first version of the Ford Blues Band featured his brother Mark Ford on harp and vocals and Garth Webber on Guitar and vocals. On bass was Ronnie Gurewitz.

They went directly into the studio and recorded enough of Patricks ideas for a CD. The results were the first FBB release and the band's first tour of Europe. Though Mark was not able to make the tour he was replaced by Andy Just who has remained with the band ever since. The release and the tour served notice that this was not just another blues band coming on the scene. This band was new and it was different and it made no apologies for its non traditional approach to the blues idiom.

Throughout the 90's the band has continued to record and tour around the world. Though the guitar and bass positions have been filled by several different players during that time the identity of the band has remained constant. Every version of the Ford Blues Band features exceptional players performing very original and very powerful modern blues. They are journeymen who have honed their craft studying and performing with the masters.

If you compiled a list of all the blues greats that the various members of the band have performed with it would look like a Who's Who list of the Blues and would include the likes of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Fenton Robinson, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson, and on and on. There is no lack of respect for the roots here. At the same time however, the band remains open to any other influences that might make their music even more vibrant and alive.

Personnel: Patrick Ford (drums, vocals); Andy Just (harmonica, vocals), John Wedemeyer (guitar); Stan Poplin (bass).

Following their 2001 tribute to Paul Butterfield (credited to Robben Ford & the Ford Blues Band), the Ford Blues Band pick 13 tracks they feel best-represent the harmonica bandleader's illustrious — but short-lived — guitarist, Mike Bloomfield. Interspersed with five fascinating but brief interview snippets of Bloomfield chatting about his first employer and playing blues in general, the band, with help from brother Robben Ford, guitarist Chris Cain, and a sparingly utilized horn section, judiciously choose many obscure selections from the guitarist's diverse projects.

"Jimi the Fox" comes from the little-known Two Jews Blues, "Peter's Trip" was a tune included on the B-movie soundtrack to The Trip, and "Next Time You See Me" as well as "The Ones I Loved Are Gone" were originally found on Bloomfield's seldom-heard and generally disappointing solo album, It's Not Killing Me. This band not only resurrects these forgotten gems, they bring them alive with sizzling authority. Ford burns on a version of East-West's "I Got a Mind to Give up Living," guest harmonica player Andy Just sounds scarily like Butterfield on a supercharged "Blues With a Feeling," and the horn-infused cover of the Electric Flag's "Groovin' Is Easy," featuring female backing vocals, nearly outdoes the original.

Guitarists Cain and Ford do a terrific job re-creating Bloomfield's terse style without aping it and these reinterpretations never seem rote. The recording quality is crisp but not slick, the performances are scintillating, production by drummer Patrick Ford is lean, and the arrangements bring out the best in these tunes. Except for shoddy graphics that look like they were thrown together overnight, this is an inspired project that will hopefully expose Bloomfield's music to another generation. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

9. Taste And Try (2:31)
10. Reap What You Sow (6:11)
11. One Man's Opinion (5:16)
12. Soul Salvation (4:09)

The core of the Ford Blues Band is a quartet featuring drummer/singer Patrick Ford (Robben's brother), guitarist/singer Volker Strifler, bassist Dewayne Pate, and harpist/vocalist Andy Just. For this project, a horn section and keyboards are added with one appearance apiece by Mark and Gabriel Ford.

The music is always blues-based even when it is soul, R&B-ish, an easy-to-take lecture on the blues ("One Man's Opinion"), and one song reminiscent of retro-swing. Although none of the players are individual virtuosos or innovators, the Ford Blues Band puts on a program full of variety, sincere feelings, and solid, danceable blues. Another Fine Day is an excellent example of their playing. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

The year is 1999, the end of a century, the end of a millennium. It is a time to remember and honor the past, and a time to look to the future. The band is The Ford Blues Band, deeply rooted in the music of the blues masters and yet always on the edge, always looking for new ways to express themselves musically. With their new CD, "1999", The Ford Blues Band vives honor to the past with several cover songs, including "Look Whatcha Done" by Magic Sam, "Bring It To Jerome" by Bo Diddley, and "Lovin' Cup" by Paul Butterfield. Along with these covers are many originals, including one track featuring Robben Ford on guitar and vocal.

This is the seventh release by The Ford Blues Band (including their album recorded with Luther Tucker shortly before his death) and it continues the tradition of hard-driving, imaginative, modern blues music. Andy Just (harp) is joined by guitarist Volker Strifler up front, while Dewayne Pate (bass) and Patrick Ford (drums) remain the driving force of the band.
