Shakey Sam (born Simon Vlietstra) was one of the very last "survivors" in the category "Dutch people who can make the blues on their own", and it has been said he was nicknamed "Shakey Sam" because he was always nervously shaking before concerts. Besides his one-man band, Shakey Sam also had the Shakey Sam Blues Band at his disposal - a tight four-man formation. For Shakey Sam it all started in 1972 when he signed up for the Larens Jazzfestival, and in 1973 he recieved 3rd prize at that very same festival. The same year he also participated in the Bilzen Festival, and in 1974 he was asked to join the program for the "American Blues Legends-Konsert" and got a standing ovation from the 1000 heads strong audience.
Also in 1974, he joined the Amsterdam formation Barrelhouse and in November that year he recorded an LP with the band. In 1975 however, he left the group for personal reasons and formed the Shakey Sam Blues Band and the first line-up consisted of Shakey Sam, Apple Rammers, David Gardeur and Jan Dijkstra. With this line-up they performed concerts with Big John Wrencher, Cousin Joe and Eddie 'Guitar' Burns. In 1976, the bass player Appie Rammers was replaced by Jan de Jong and in May of that year the first solo record by Shakey Sam was out on the market. As a result of this LP, Shakey Sam got an invitation to do an English tour and it became a huge success.
In 1977, Leo Roodhof replaced Jan Dijkstra on the drums and the band recorded an LP. The album came out in 1978 and got great reviews. On May 15, 1981, one day before his 31st birthday, Shakey Sam tragically made a drastic decision and took his own his life. (Translated from Dutch.)
