Next Saturday, the now 10-year-old band is changing its name. As support act for Danny Keetels & The Shrunken BigBand, they will present themselves to the public this evening.
“The new line-up is so different from before that we chose a new name 'BluezzTwisters' and that also shows what we stand for: danceable songs with a blues base”, Mark van Lieshout explains the change of course. The band will consist of Theo van der Heijden on drums, Koos Boer on guitar & vocals, Mark van Lieshout on bass and now supplemented with Robbert Kooijmans on trumpet, Ronny Keetels on trombone, Paul van den Oever on Tenor sax.
The band's first performance was in 2011 in the Eggels family garden. "We were four people, Koos Boer guitar & vocals, Theo van der Heijden drums, Harm van Oss trumpet player and Mark van Lieshout bass. Harm, our trumpet player, stopped last year, so you start wondering what to do next and what we actually want. We want everyone to have a nice evening where they can preferably dance. In the first five years of our existence as Four Bluezz we had a number of jazz numbers, which could still be possible now, but the emphasis is still on uptempo funky, bluezy numbers. A number of them also tend towards soul. So all in all very diverse. Furthermore, we are going from a quartet to a sextet, so six people. Adding three wind instruments makes everything much more powerful and varied. We are moving a bit further away from the jazzy numbers, towards more uptempo numbers. But with BluezzTwister we are rubbing up against all those musical currents. Blues, jazz, soul, r&b and boogaloo. It's all still there and not gone from us. Every now and then a somewhat slower blues ballad can come out. In City Theater we won't do that. Only uptempo numbers", says the bass guitarist.
The band has of course also experienced many great performances in those ten years. “The first time will of course remain, but also the times we performed at 1Ander Festival and Pleinpop. Furthermore, we are a regular during the Battle of the Bands in the former Hopbel, which we will also participate in this year in March.”
When music lovers come to see you, what can they expect? “An energetic sextet with which you can create a great atmosphere in many a venue. The composition of BluezzTwisters, and especially the choice of music, is such that we fit in very well with the outdoor festivals, such as the many jazz and blues festivals that are held in many places in the country. That is the direction we want to go. On Saturday 28 January we will play with BluezzTwisters for the first time in the new composition with a cool set full of swing numbers. We will open the evening together with Danny Keetels his Daniel Calderas & the Shrunken BigBand. We hope to see you there”, says the ambitious musician.
