This debut album by Barbecue Bob & The Spareribs was recorded live at Coyote Studios in Brooklyn, New York, in 1996. The sound suffers some fidelity problems because of the live setting, but it doesn't matter much, since the hard driving, swampy blues style of the band is delivered in true garage fashion, warts and all, and feeds off its own energy. The lead track, a charging blues rocker called "Bad Luck Boy," is typical of the set here. /Steve Leggett, AllMusic

In the 1920s, record companies found the Black audience could be profitable. Record sales soared. Sex - disguised -was a major part of blues lyrics. Fish, flesh, fruit and fowl were all co-opted, as well as rent men and gas men, butchers and bakers, carpenters and coffee grinders, keyholes and kitchens, cigarettes and sissies, frying pans and furniture, and unkindly, a bicycle. Here's a raucous, red-blooded blues investigation of one of Humanity's constant fixations, from artists like Julia Lee, Lonnie Johnson, Victoria Spivey, Roosevelt Sykes and many, many more.

Barbecue Bob & The Spareribs - Pass The Biscuits!

[4:16] 13. The Backslider

Let's face it: Most blues music reeks of honky revival. You know the stuff. Amiable white guys who memorize the collected licks of Robert Johnson or more likely Stevie Ray Vaughn or even more likely George Thorogood, wreak havoc on the same three chords over and over. Pretty soon the refried hockey blues of Canned Heat is sounding pretty good.

Not so with this outfit. A roster of NYC-NJ blues veterans who have the chops to back up their considerable record collections, BBQ Bob & the Spareribs play it as hard and mean as those excellent Excello sides recently anthologized (and worth your time) by Hip-O / Universal. In fact, on their second CD, Pass the Biscuits, they cover Lonesome Sundown's (Cornelius Green) "My Home is a Prison" (written by J.D. Miller, who also wrote Kitty Wells' "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"), which appeared on The Excello Story Volume Two. Here, singer Bob Pomeroy's harp traces guitarist Ira Spinrad's lead lines in glorious stereo. Those two do a lot of chasing each other. In place of a twin guitar attack, Spinrad and Pomeroy trade licks between distorted harp and guitar. True telepathy at times.

The entire CD was recorded live on Tuesday, June 13, 1999 at Coyote Studios in Brooklyn and the result is the actual energy of live show. Unlike, say, the Rolling Stones, who stripped it down for their acoustic outing, only to employ back-up singers, keyboardists and other sweeteners, these guys are the raw deal. When they grab Bruce Martin for a little Hammond B-3, Charles Otis for percussion or Neil Tex Thomas for piano, accordion or washboard, it's to fill out the sound, not to pad it. There's a difference. Only goes to show you how screwed up the music business is these days that guys playing their instruments live in a room could be considered such a novel idea.

Barbecue Bob - The Essential

During the 1920s and early 1930s, the Atlanta, Georgia school of blues musicians was almost unique in their dedication to the twelve-string guitar. This instrument gave depth and resonance to the playing of many fine musicians including Blind Wilie McTell, George Carter, Willie Baker and one of the most popular recording artist of the period, Robert 'Barbecue Hicks'. Robert Hicks and his younger brother Charlie became popular entertainers at various social gatherings. Dan Hornsby, a talent scout from Columbia Records, found Bob working and playing at Tidwell's Bar-B-Q in a rich white neighborhood in Durham. Hornsby arranged for a mobile recording unit to record Bob in a downtown Atlanta hotel in March 1927. His first release (as Barbecue Bob) provided Columbia with a fast commercial success up to 15,000 copies, and made Barbecue Bob the best selling artist of the moment. He recorded some 65 sides between 1927 and his death in 1931, an interesting mix of modal country blues that is as fine as any tracked by a country blues artist in the era, although he seldom gets the same attention afforded the Mississippi Delta players of the period. This double-disc set has all the essentials, although it may be more than the casual listener really needs, since like most blues players of the day, Hicks wasn't about to change what worked. Still, his modal approach sets him apart, and his guitar playing is vastly underrated. His last recording sessions was as a member of The Georgia Cotton Pickers, joined by Curley Weaver and Buddy Moss. Barbecue Bob died tragically of pneumonia at the age of 29.

Booze & the Blues is a thoroughly entertaining collection of 22 pre-war blues songs about wine, drinking, whiskey and blues. It's a gimmicky excuse for a collection, but it works, not only because the songs and performances are good, but because the tracks all have a similar spirit. Among the highlights are tracks by Memphis Minnie, Mississippi Sheiks, Robert Hicks, the Memphis Jug Band, Amos Easton, Lucille Bogan, Peetie Wheatstraw and Joshua White. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The huge musical influence of the church has meant that gospel music and the blues have long been intertwined. From the true guitar evangelists such as Blind Willie Johnson and Reverend Gary Davis to blues legends Charley Patton and Skip James, these recordings illustrate how the line separating the Lord's song and 'the devil's music' was very thin.
