British-born blues-rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Snowy White is among the more anonymous yet instantly recognizable guitar stylists to emerge from the 1970s. A sessionman as well as a solo artist, he deliberately seeks anonymity; he is equally at home playing the blues, pop, or arena rock due to his discipline, melodicism, and fluid, unhurried style on his signature vintage Les Paul gold top. In addition to a catalog of independently released solo outings or leading his White Flames or Blues Agency groups, he was a backing guitarist for Pink Floyd on the Animals and The Wall tours, lead guitarist for Roger Waters' backing band, a member of Thin Lizzy from 1980-1982, and worked with artists ranging from longtime friend Peter Green to Rick Wright, Mick Taylor, and Phil Lynott.

His debut album White Flames, issued in 1983, netted his only chart hit with "Bird of Paradise," which went to number six in the U.K. He's amassed a critically acclaimed catalog of more than two-dozen albums including 1996's No Faith Required, 2009's In Our Time of Living, and his low-key 2016 masterpiece Released - a solo effort that saw him playing most of the instruments himself. /Excerpt from biography by Heather Phares, AllMusic

Snowy White - Driving On The 44

There’s a lot of history with Snowy White. Friend of Peter Green, touring member of Pink Floyd in the 1970s, participant in the US shows of ‘The Wall’ and member of Thin Lizzy for three years with two albums, ‘Chinatown,’ and ‘Renegade’ to his name. His first solo album White Flames was released in 1983 and produced the hit single ‘Bird of Paradise.’ Since then, his career has continued, partly solo work along with several collaborations as The White Flames with Dutch Indonesian musicians Juan van Emmerloot (drums/percussion) and Walter Latupeirissa (bass and rhythm guitar). White toured with Roger Waters from 1999 to 2014, maintaining the Floyd connection. Further solo releases followed, the most recent being 2020’s ‘Something on Me.’ Aged 74, White continues to produce soulful blues music that is perfect for a relaxing summer evening with a glass of something cold as the sun goes down.

‘Driving on the 44’ is a mature piece of work, as one would expect. The musicianship is superb, relaxed, and chilled, but of a high quality. Some of the tracks struggle a little in the lyrical department, ‘Down in the Dark’ being the obvious example with an attempt at human observation coming across as the musings of a grumpy old man. Yet his organic playing glosses over any shortcomings in the lyrics. Opening track ‘Freshwater’ brings a deliciously mellow style, the title track gets the foot tapping and there is an extended workout on ‘Blues 22’ which is well worth a listen. White adds a stellar solo on ‘Keep on Flying.’

Alongside White, who also plays keyboards and bass as well as singing, we have the talents of Thomas White on drums and percussion, Max Middleton on piano, Hammond, and strings and Ferry Lagendijk on piano, Hammond, synth. The combination brings a level of quality that only experienced musicians can deliver. The riffs are relaxed, the grooves are cool, and the overall vibe is one of smoky, soulful blues.

He may not be the household name he was for a brief moment in 1983, but White and his signature Gibson Les Paul Goldtop continue to make beautiful music which will please thousands of discerning guitar fans. It certainly is a laid-back journey that is worth taking. ~Paul Hutchings

11. Hard Blues (4:32)
12. I Can't Imagine (4:45)

Since the late 1960s, Snowy's characteristic guitar-playing has been heard and lauded on a multitude of recordings and stages. Whether as a member of Thin Lizzy (on the albums 'Chinatown' and 'Renegade'), working with Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), as an indispensable tour musician for Pink Floyd and later Roger Waters, or as a highly-respected solo artist: Snowy has always remained true to his love for excellent, handmade music. For the recording of the 12 new tracks, Snowy called on musical collaborators and friends including Max Middleton (piano/keys), Ferry Langendrijk (keys), Jessica Lauren (keys), Kuma Harada (bass), Walter Latupeirissa (bass), Juan van Emmerloot (drums) and Jeff Allen (drums). Snowy White, describing the new songs: "The Situation. These songs are my expression of where I was in 2018... up and down, good and bad, weak and strong - it's all here... just doing my thing as usual, enjoying playing with all my musician friends. The Situation - well, we're all in a 'situation' of some kind or another. This Feeling - when did I lose it? Time passes and we all see changes in ourselves. LA Skip - Venice Beach in LA, watching the jugglers as the sun went down and the air cooled. We Can't Seem To Do Much About It - hmmm, well, maybe that's a bit defeatist, but things do seem to be getting out of control. Crazy Situation Blues - got the blues in my heart most of the time, that's just the way it is. Blues In My Reflection - someone somewhere out there loves me? I wonder... So, Why Do I Still Have The Blues? - Good question. But one thing I do know is that You Can't Take It With You - so better make the most of it while you can. I need a change of direction maybe? Migration - a new environment, could do the trick. It's hard out there though, can't always trust what you hear, plenty of people playing The Lying Game. Well, we can only make the most of things, go through these Hard Blues and hope to come out the other side in one piece. As for the future, getting older, some hard times coming and, honestly, I Can't Imagine how it's going to be... "

Snowy White & The White Flames - Reunited

Size: 135,5 MB
Time: 58:12
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2017
Styles: Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. Have I Got Blues For You ( 5:01)
02. Headful Of Blues ( 6:35)
03. I've Heard It All Before ( 4:21)
04. Where Will You Belong ( 4:49)
05. I Know Our Time Ain't Long ( 4:35)
06. Rest Full ( 3:46)
07. Long Time No C ( 3:51)
08. Emptyhanded ( 4:28)
09. Nuff Said ( 3:38)
10. In California ( 5:25)
11. Time To Start Living (11:37)

For his previous album, ‘Released‘, Snowy spent two years working mainly on his own in his home studio; this time around however, he recorded the bulk of the tracks with his tried and trusted pals Kuma Harada (bass), Max Middleton (keys), Juan van Emmerloot, Richard Bailey (both drums) and Walter Latupeirissa (bass). The album runs from the bluesier end to rock and even a tight Latin workout. Whatever the tempo and the groove, Snowy’s distinctive, soulful guitar runs like a golden thread throughout the album, connecting all together and making for a satisfyingand very listenable offering.

In Snowy’s own words: “When I play music with friends that I respect and admire, both as players and as people, either doing live shows or in a recording environment, I feel that I’m exactly where I want to be. I feel at home. It’s been a year or two since I last got together with the musicians who appear on this new album, called, for obvious reasons, ‘Reunited’. We had a great time working together again and I’m very happy with the way they interpreted my ideas, helping me evolve the songs from the simple outlines that I took into the studio into complete pieces of music. So I would like to thank my friends Kuma, Max, Walter, Juan and Richard for adding their good vibes to the sessions. I feel very honoured that my music was transformed and improved by these fine musicians, and I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with them once again. Because of them, recording ‘Reunited’ was a lot of fun and has created yet another store of good memories, and, for me, that’s what it’s all about. Music and musicians evolve and change over time, so this album is just snapshot of how it was at that moment in Snowy’s career. Tracks like ‘Have I Got Blues For You’, ‘Headful Of Blues’ and ‘Emptyhanded’ cover the bluesier side of things, whereas ‘Where Will You Belong’ and ‘In California’ are more reflective. ‘Nuff Said’ and ‘I Know Our Time Ain’t Long’ are examples of the more up-tempo and rockier Snowy White. There’s something for everybody, from the weird ‘Long Time No C’ to the tight latin groove of ‘Heard It All Before’. Whatever the tempo and the groove, Snowy’s distinctive soulful guitar runs like a golden thread throughout the album.

Snowy White is one of a handful of classic blues-orientated British electric guitar players - musicians whose sound, technique and style has echoed the originality of the blues with the excitement of contemporary rock.

At the age of eleven he first heard the urban blues sound that had been emanating from the United States, people such as BB King, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Albert King, and was immediately aware that this was the music that he wanted to incorporate in his playing. He has developed his own style of ‘English ‘ blues, a combination of clear, clean blues phrases and harder-edged riffs that are a recognisable feature of his very personal songs.

Snowy White - Rarities & Outtakes

British-born blues/rock guitarist Snowy White first became interested in music at age 11, when he heard urban blues performers like B.B. King, Otis Rush, and Buddy Guy, and was inspired to create his own clean, hard-edged style of British blues.

After moving to London in the early '70s, White spent the decade forging his sound and playing with like-minded artists such as Pink Floyd, Peter Green, and Thin Lizzy. In 1979 Thin Lizzy asked White to join them as a full-time band member; he did, touring and recording Chinatown and The Renegade with them.

In pursuit of different musical directions, White left Thin Lizzy in 1982. Joined by drummer Richard Bailey, bassist Kuma Harada, and keyboardist Godfrey Wang, he recorded his solo debut White Flames. Its single "Bird of Paradise" became an international hit, reaching number three on the U.K. charts.

Not content to be known as a singles artist, White rethought his approach to music. After deciding to focus on his guitar playing, he formed a touring blues band in 1986 with Harada, drummer Jeff Allen, and vocalist/guitarist Graham Bell. For three years the band toured and recorded, releasing Change My Life and Open for Business.

In 1990, however, White's old friend Roger Waters offered him a supporting slot in his epic Berlin performance of The Wall. White performed a memorable solo during "Comfortably Numb" atop the 80-foot high Berlin Wall, alongside other guest artists like Van Morrison and Bryan Adams. Waters also called on White the following year to play with him at the Guitar Legends concert in Seville.

At this point, White decided to re-enter the music mainstream, and recorded songs he had collected over the past few years. The result was 1993's Highway to the Sun, his second solo album, featuring guests like David Gilmour, Chris Rea, and Gary Moore. His next album, Goldtop, was a retrospective piece, covering White's work from the early '70s to the '90s. 1998 saw the release of Little Wing, recorded with drummer Juan van Emmerloot and bassist Walter Latapeirissa as White's new backing band; Melting followed a year later. ~Biography by Heather Phares

'What's it like being so underrated? , someone recently asked the British guitarist and singer Snowy White. His reply: 'Well, I certainly prefer it to being overrated'. The guy asking the question obviously hadn't understood why Snowy has been making music for over 40 years. Some musicians want to fill stadiums and have hit albums; other musicians like Snowy just want to play the blues, and are happiest playing music in a small club, trying to find those sweet moments when everything is just right. The sound, the atmosphere, the audience. The musicians who join Snowy on this DVD have played with him at different stages of his long and distinguished career. Hence, the DVD contains many songs which haven t been played live for a while, and which feature the musicians who were also present on the original album recordings. With Snowy on stage were Kuma Harada (bass and rhythm guitar), Richard Bailey (drums), Walter Latupeirissa (bass and rhythm guitar), Juan van Emmerloot (percussion), Ruud Weber (bass and rhythm guitar), John 'Rabbit' Bundrick (Hammond and piano), Max Middleton (keyboards), Jeff Allen (drums), and Snowy's son, Thomas White (percussion). The DVD was filmed on 16th September 2011 in De Bosuil Club in Weert, Holland.

Snowy White - The Best Of Snowy White (2-Disc set)

Terence ‘Snowy’ White is a fine British born guitarist with a worldwide reputation for tasteful musicianship. While often called upon to support other groups and artists – including Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd and Roger Waters, Snowy has also carved a solo career with a prolific output of albums and singles.

This carefully chosen double CD compilation showcases the best of his work from three decades of creativity. It includes his memorable 1983 UK Top Ten hit single ‘Bird Of Paradise’ and many more tracks from albums made with his own regular White Flames band. Among the 1980s albums that provide a rich source of material for Disc One are ‘White Flames’, ‘That Certain Thing’, ‘Snowy White’, ‘Change My Life’ and ‘Open For Business’. Disc Two covers the period from 1994 to 2005, drawing from Snowy’s albums ‘Highway To The Sun’, ‘No Faith Required’, ‘Little Wing’, ‘Keep Out: We Are Toxic’, ‘Restless’ and ‘Way It Is’.

Snowy has recently toured extensively with Roger Waters, and this excellent compilation celebrates the career of the man with ‘Goldtop’ guitar and the magic touch.
