Harrison Kennedy - Thanks For Tomorrow

Size: 92.8 MB
Time: 39:28
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2022
Styles: Acoustic/Electric Blues
Art: Front

1. All I Need Is You (Feat. Ruthie Foster & Colin Linden) (3:24)
2. Easiest Thing (Feat. Colin Linden) (3:39)
3. Thanks For Tomorrow (Feat. Colin Linden) (3:33)
4. On Call Man (3:22)
5. Women (2:41)
6. Checkin' You Out (2:56)
7. Crazy Love (3:39)
8. Memphis Trippin' (Feat. Colin Linden) (3:52)
9. Cranky Woman (Feat. Colin Linden) (3:39)
10. Doomed (3:30)
11. You Lost Me (Feat. Colin Linden) (2:56)
12. Just Wanna Play (2:13)

The parallel here is just too striking to ignore. Just as the now well-decorated bluesman Bobby Rush did not win a Grammy until he was into his eighties, after many nominations, with his album Porcupine Meat, Canada’s preeminent bluesman Harrison Kennedy, the recently turned octogenarian, may have also made the best blues album of his career with Thanks for Tomorrow. Both Rush and Kennedy have in their careers straddled the worlds of soul and blues and each has returned to authentic blues in their late careers. Okay, Kennedy did win Canada’s equivalent, the JUNO Award in 2016 for Blues Album of the Year for This is From Here but Kennedy himself feels that this one is even better. Just as Rush turned to stellar backing musicians, so too does Kennedy with guitarist Colin Linden and on one track Ruthie Foster. The album is produced by keyboardist Jesse O’Brien (Levon Helm) and also features Linden’s Blackie and the Rodeo Kings rhythm tandem of drummer Gary Craig and bassist John Dymond, the same core behind his 2016 winner.

This writer gets weary of the phrase describing Kennedy as “best known as a founding member of Holland-Dozier-Holland’s million-selling ‘70s Soul Supergroup the ‘Chairmen of the Board.’” That was too long ago and diminishes all the great work that Kennedy has done in blues, garnering multiple nominations and awards. Yet, this may well be the best blues album he’s done for its diverse styles, his original songs, and mostly his one-of-a-kind vocals. It deserves to fare at least as well as its predecessor.

The album kicks off with the single, the bouncy shuffle “All I Need Is You,” as Kennedy and Foster join in a joyous duet as Linden strums his acoustic and O’Brien colors in with the B3. “Easiest Thing I Do” is a country blues while the hand clapping, stomping title track revs up the electric accompaniment and gets all the body parts moving. “On Call Man” features O’Brien’s rollicking piano Chicago style with Kennedy singing authentically and blowing his harp. “Women” is a mid-tempo ballad, praising the opposite sex to tasty slide from Linden and B3 from O’Brien as Kennedy’s soul style comes to the fore.

“Checkin’ You Out” won’t impress with its predictable lyrics but it swings with O’Brien’s piano, and Kennedy’s blissful phrasing, harmonica, and the steady rhythm groove. His standout cover of Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love” is easily the best interpretation of this oft-covered song. Kennedy’s impassioned vocal here and his slowing of the tempo add added emotional impact to every lyric, further accented by the searing support of Linden’s slide. It’s as if Kennedy shifted into a grittier gear with the gutbucket “Memphis Trippin’,” cutting deep with O’Brien’s piano and Linden’s piercing jabs. “Cranky Woman” carries that “High Heel Sneakers” feel as Kennedy urges on Linden in perhaps his best solo on the disc. O’Brien follows suit on the piano and at this point, one just realizes these basic blues structured tunes would be rather bland in the hands of many others but Kennedy’s soul-drenched, convicted vocals make each seem like a new discovery.

“Doomed” has a different tune, haunting and spellbinding with Kennedy reaching into the higher registers. “You Lost Me” is an electrified country blues while the closing “Just Wanna’ Play” ratchets up the boogie-woogie as the band gets down into a fun jam with Kennedy wailing on blues harp and singing “just want to play soul music and jumping blues all day.” It’s another simple one shrouded with no pretensions whatsoever. Kennedy feels it and you will too. Thinking of today’s living blues singers, Kennedy has to be among the top five. Kennedy’s second JUNO award likely awaits. ~Jim Hynes

Harrison Kennedy’s voice, banjo, spoons and guitar, Jean-Jacques Milteau’s imaginative harmonica and Vincent Segal’s lyrical cello converse and play as the members of this inspired trio pay homage to their roots without sacrificing to nostalgia, inventing no less than the future of the blue note in the process. Kennedy owes forbearers who traveled the Underground Railroad all the way to Ontario, fleeing the Southern plantations where they were enslaved. Harrison has kept from this aching heritage a deep respect for the Mississippi and Tennessee roots he nurtures to this day in a truly original and personal fashion. The proud holder of a 2016 Juno Award and recipient of the 2015 Blues Prize granted by Académie, Charles Cros got his start at the height of the soul era. After making a noted debut on the prestigious Motown imprint joined the stellar group Chairmen of the Board, traveling across the world and sharing the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, and Tom Jones, among others. Eclecticism remains to this day the dominant trait of an artist who has always combined tradition and innovation. Jean-Jacques Milteau needs no introduction. This French harmonica wizard is a respected specialist of the blue note whose fruitful work with Eric Bibb around the repertoire of old-time songster Lead Belly has recently been acclaimed. Milteau, the winner of two Victoires de la Musique has worked, in the studio and on stage, with the likes of B.B. King, Little Milton, Mighty Mo Rodgers and Sam McClain. As for Vincent Segal, winner of an impressive number of Victoires de la Musique and with twenty years on the road with Cyril Atef and the duo Bumcello under his belt, his cello has graced an impressive number of projects in a wide variety of musical styles.

Harrison Kennedy - 2 albums: This Is From Here / Shame The Devil

Hamilton, Ontario, may seem an unlikely blues enclave, but Harrison Kennedy has always made the locale work for him. No less then B.B. King has hailed Kennedy as Canada's premier blues performer. If the North Country seems a culture apart from the Deep South or industrial cities of the United States, Kennedy said his hometown has fronted a blues tradition of its own. "Hamilton's a blue collar steel worker's town" Kennedy said. "The blues is deeper here"

miXendorp is the project of one man from the Netherlands, who’s dedicated to updating the blues for present times. His recent release on European label Black And Tan Records is prefaced with exciting potential: “The blues used to be party music; now it can be played again at the hippest modern parties, festival and clubs….. and still feel down home.”

The description for Black And Tan Edits reads a bit like an infomercial, and there are some cheese qualities here for sure. But the blues have been bastardized and neglected plenty in the present day, and these musical spins are at least unconventionally fun party music that remind one of the heyday of the genre.

miXendorp describes his mixes as “blues + beat”, and the combination is apt; he applies everything from house beats and new age percussion to classic singer-songwriter blues. Such modern day genre-mashing turns the blues into club-ready hits which feel so much like a merging of two worlds that it becomes important to remember that the originals are not relics of the past; they are in fact fairly recent, pulled from the past 14 years of releases by Black And Tan.

Harrison Kennedy - Sweet Taste

File: MP3 @ 320K/s

(4:05) 12. Bending Down Low

Since Harrison Kennedy was one of the singers in the Chairmen of the Board, many casual listeners would reasonably assume that this solo effort is a soul record. It isn't, although it's soulful. It's actually pretty pure blues, Kennedy not only singing but also playing acoustic guitar. And it's quite good, Kennedy singing with admirably unforced passion, and a good amount of emotional range, on a set of entirely self-composed material (with the exception of a cover of old friends Holland-Dozier-Holland's "I'm the Chairman"). The production is commendably down-home and unfussy, the songs gritty and hard-hitting, with spices of New Orleans gumbo ("Sweet Taste"), work songs (the eerie "Commercial Tools"), foot-stomping Delta country-blues ("Silvie"), churchy deep soul ("Bending Down Low"), and some excellent Hammond organ by Keith Lindsay (particularly his choked swirl on "One Time Affair"). When a Canadian CD such as this one bears no label name, catalog number, release date, or contact address, it's a safe guess that it might well be suffering from serious obstacles in gaining wide distribution (though it certainly is legit, as it does have a bar code). That's a shame, because in its unfettered, organic approach, it's better than many early 21st century blues albums that garnered Grammy award nominations. That might say at least as much about the Grammies as it does about Kennedy's album, but make no mistake: this is a good contemporary blues record, well thought-out, imaginatively eclectic, and well-produced despite the vanity-press-like feel of its packaging.

The VOICE and the STORY are the most important ingredients in roots orientated music. On this new record the music is as pure as possible. Everything is arranged around the voice and stories of Harrison Kennedy, a contemporary blues troubadour. The scope of Kennedy's original compositions showcases the chameleon quality of a voice at ease performing a mix of funk, soul, r&b, rock, folk, roots, gospel and blues. Harrison was blessed as a member of the Detroit scene in the 70’s with The Chairmen Of The Board in which he sang the blues rocker “I’m the chairman of the board”. They played top venues including Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, Soul Train, American Bandstand and England’s Top of the Pops, doing their hit, “Give Me Just A Little More Time.” The Chairmen of The Board performed with B.B King, James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Funkadelics and more. But after a few years, that lifestyle wasn’t what Kennedy wanted.
He’d return to Southern Ontario after the glitz of transatlantic pop stardom wore thin, but the Chairmen of the Board experience did encourage Kennedy to learn to write his own music and play the guitar. Kennedy had rediscovered his original loves in soul and country blues and simply made music for its own reward for the next few decades. His voice remains his biggest drawing card capable of holding one’s complete attention without the need of a net, second only to his ability to write a tune based on historical perspective ("Boblo Island,” "Let Her Talk”). Yet, when the rudiments of guitar, percussion and bass are supplied, the results go a long way towards being all the more pleasing ("There Ain’t No Way,” "Humming Blues”). Kennedy is an urban poet, stripped bare, yet comfortable in his own skin and his adrenaline-fuelled, emotionally-charged vocals embrace elements of the blues, funk, folk, gospel and R&B — all wrapped in a convincing blanket of soulful abandon. From "Bad Attitude” to "One Track Mind” to "40 Acres and a Mule,” Kennedy has crafted an honest-to-goodness, contemporary blues record in the time-honoured style of the storyteller.

Although he first gained attention as one-quarter of the great Detroit vocal group the Chairmen of the Board, Harrison Kennedy is originally from Hamilton, Ontario. Returning home after the group's early-'70s chart run, Kennedy spent close to 30 years outside of the music business before returning as a blues singer and guitarist with 2003's Sweet Taste and 2005's Voice + Story. High Country Blues, Kennedy's debut for blues label Electro-Fi, is the singer and guitarist's strongest outing to date. Kennedy kicks the album off with the stomping boogie "Let Me Call You," a song that in other hands might sound like just another John Lee Hooker knockoff, but Kennedy's canny use of shakers and kalimba for the unusual rhythm track turns it into an unexpected intermingling of Central Africa, Latin America, and the Mississippi Delta. The rest of High Country Blues is similarly unconcerned with concepts of authenticity and tradition for their own sake; in his liner notes, Kennedy compares himself to the obscure Louisiana bluesman Robert Pete Williams (whose signature song, "Grown So Ugly," has been covered by everyone from Captain Beefheart to the Black Keys), claiming a similar lack of connection to any established blues tradition, and based on these 16 all-original songs, he's entirely right. Kennedy moves easily from the rollicking hokum of "Blues from a Bottle" (complete with non-ironic kazoo solos!) to the a cappella gospel sway of "Gonna Be Alright." Elsewhere, the gutbucket slide and harrowing vocals of the haunted "Run-A-Round Blues" is immediately replaced by the joyous loverman strut of "Love Serenade," powered by Keith Lindsay's rollicking organ line and a guitar riff that's either consciously or not lifted from the opening of Les Paul & Mary Ford's similarly giddy "How High the Moon." The songs are informed by various blues strains, but Kennedy wisely avoids tying to mold himself into a caricature of a particular style. The resulting album is uniformly excellent, one of the most satisfying blues albums of 2007. ~ Stewart Mason

For the past decade, his recordings have earned Harrison Kennedy many accolades in the business. No less than B.B. King has hailed him as Canada’s premier blues performer. Singing and playing the mandolin, the banjo, the guitar and the harmonica in a mostly acoustic setting, his strong poetic writing and full sense of irony largely contribute to the growing success of this very special blues troubadour. His latest album, and his finest to date, Soulscape, displays formidable creativity as he delves into the many musical influences passed on to him. The release of this album is not only a giant step for Harrison; it is one for the blues.
