Taking his stage name from an automobile he once owned, Studebaker John Grimaldi was a product of the vibrant blues scene of Chicago's West Side. Born November 5, 1952, his father was himself an amateur musician, and as a youngster, Grimaldi began playing the many instruments lying about the house. Becoming a fixture at the open-air flea markets in the Maxwell Street area - a venue for countless blues buskers - he began focusing on harmonica after catching performances from the likes of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson; after taking in a Hound Dog Taylor club date, Grimaldi also turned to guitar.

He formed the blues-rock band the Hawks during the early '70s as a showcase for his reedy vocals, primal harp sound, and blistering slide guitar skills, and in the years to follow also developed into a fine songwriter. While keeping his day job as a construction worker, Grimaldi began recording during the mid-'80s, issuing a live Netherlands set later re-released domestically as Rockin' the Blues '85. His next major release was 1994's Too Tough, followed in 1995 by Outside Lookin' In. The Groove City projects starts from the musical collaboration and, above all, from the deep friendship among some well known musicians acting in the Bologna (Italy) area over many years. The style of music is inspired by Soul and Blues and in particular by the Memphis Sound with isolated raids into Funky and Jazz. The band was founded in 2005 and in 2010 it publishes its first CD “Friends” which represents the synthesis of the first five years of activity and gathers the recordings of some among many friends who teamed up with the band: Charlie Wood contributed with three tunes recorded live at Bravo Caffè in March 2009, then Rossella Graziani, Antonella Clementi, Gloria Turrini.

Participation at many editions of the Porretta Soul Festival and other Festivals a number of collaborations of the band with American artists, mostly resident in Memphis. In 2009 with the Sweet Nectar vocalist and the guitar player Tomas Bingham. In 2010 with Sax Gordon, explosive saxophon player from Detroit they proposed a tribute to King Curtis. In 2011 with Charlie Wood (Hammond organ and voice), Dwaine Thomas (bass), Bobby Manuel (guitar) and Sax Gordon again, a tribute to Willy Mitchell. After the 2011 festival they started a collaboration with the great Memphis singer Toni Green (Isaac Hayes). Together with Toni they performed the closing gig of the “Spiagge Soul” Festival in Marina di Ravenna, Italy.

In 2014 a series of gigs with Bruce James and Bella Black from Texas. In 2015 they participated at the Porretta Soul Festival with Rick Hutton, Theo Huff (Chicago) and Wee Willie Walker (Memphis). Soon after the Groove City Band performed a series of concerts with Willie. In 2016 during the 29th edition of the Porretta Soul Festival the band presented the CD Road To Memphis entirely dedicated to the Memphis town, a showcase of many artists that the band featured during many years. Moreover the band gigged with Jerry Jones, Rick Hutton, Bruce James and for the first time with Daria Biancardi. In October 2016 they participate at the final evening of the Castelfranco Blues Festival gigging with Daria Biancardi, David Hudson (Atlanta) and Virginia Smith.

With Daria Biancardi and Rick Hutton, the outstanding presenter of the Italian television program Videomusic and Master of Cerimony of the Porretta Soul Festival, they exhibited in a number of gigs and designed the show called “The Soul Story”, presented for the first time at the Unipol Arena of Bologna, Italy, in early December 2016. Their arrangement of tunes like “New York State of Mind” and “Spirit in the Dark” won in 2011 and 2012 the prize for the best live performance at the competition “Libera la musica” (“Set the Music Free”) organized by “Magazzini Sonori” and by the Emilia Romagna Regional Council and again in 2014 with the original tune “No Need No Money” composed by Fabio Ziveri and Saverio Lanzarini (regretfully the latter died in March 2015 when he was only 41 years old) and performed by Bruce James they won the same competition for the “Soul and R&B” section.

The increasingly tight collaboration with Daria Biancardi gave birth to “Respect! Queen Aretha”, a musical dedicated to the undisputed Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, which had its debut in September 2017 at the Santa Cecilia Theater in Palermo, Italy. In October 2017 the CD “Live at Bravo Caffè” was released, recorded live with Daria Biancardi in the well known club of Bologna. In 2018, 2019 e 2020 the activity of the Groove City band was carried on with many public and private gigs. We like to remember the Pitigliano Festival in summer 2018, the November 2018 gigs in Montebelluna (Treviso, Italy) and Turbigo (Milan, Italy), the “Respect! Queen Aretha” performance in March 2019 at the Michelangelo Theater in Modena (Italy) and the gig of August 2020 in the beautiful square of Budrio (Bologna).

About the artist 30 (in words thirty) years of band history are on the books. The trio "No Mercy" became "The Kingfish" after Frank Farian messed up the beautiful name for a stupid pop project. Over the years, the cover band No Mercy became a band that went its own way, composed a bunch of its own titles and didn't shy away from crossing musical boundaries. In particular, the last production, the "Robert Johnson Project" shows what rhythmn blues and roots rock can offer. The cast speaks for itself: Eddie Filipp (dr) did it with Sweet, Nils Tucson, Abi Wallenstein, Vince Weber and many, many others. David Jehn toured with Uli Beckerhoff, Dave Goodman, sometimes with Helge Schneider and whatever else is famous in northern Germany. Jürgen Sosnowski, long-established permanent guest, because he is the most extraordinary guitarist in northern Germany. And Andreas Linke, helped man - helped animal.

Though their luster had faded by 1972, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band had already earned their measure of immortality by first popularizing and then pushing the boundaries of the blues. This influential outfit recorded two acknowledged classics, their eponymous debut and the subsequent East-West, which account for the first two sides of Golden Butter. Here you'll find the straight-ahead Chicago blues of their debut ("Born in Chicago," "Mellow Down Easy," "Look Over Yonders Wall") and the prescient psychedelic blues-rock of their second effort ("East-West," "Mary, Mary").

The last two sides of this compilation draw from the Elektra anthology What's Shakin' ("Spoonful," "One More Mile"), a pair of tracks each from their third and fourth albums, and a song from each of their last three albums. Delivered in chronological order, Golden Butter offers an accurate miniature of the band's unraveling from blues ambassadors to innovators to increasingly irrelevant icons. Yet if the band's fire burned briefly, it burned brightly, casting a shadow that remained visible throughout the decade in the music of Cream, Steve Miller Band, and many others.

And even toward the end of their career, the band had an authentic understanding of the blues that few could match (a point underscored here with a live version of "Driftin' and Driftin'"). Golden Butter has yet to be released on CD, Elektra electing instead to release a new double-disc retrospective, An Anthology - The Elektra Years. Musician, actor and dancer, born 28/06/1938 in New York, also called Little Earl. He came to Norway with his band in 1964 and was hired as an actor and dancer at Det Norske Teatret, but it is as a soul interpreter that he will be remembered. Wilson started the legendary soul band Little Earl & The Sapphires, which consisted mainly of musicians from an unnamed band that rehearsed at Club 7, and from the group The Bats, which went so far as to get an appearance on television. The line-up was Tommy Merg and Nils Bjørness on guitars, Svein Hansen on bass, Tom Karlsen on drums, Arild Wickstrøm on organ, and a line of brass consisting of Calle Neumann (alto sax), Knut Riisnes and Alf Kjeldman (both on tenor sax) and Hans Petter "Stan" Knudsen (baritone sax).

The band toured Germany in 1966, and were among the first soul/R&B bands to tour there. On the recording front, they made three singles: "Don't Play That Song" (1966), "I Can't Believe It" (1966) and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (1967) – the first released as Little Earl and The Sapphires, the last two came as The Sapphires. In addition, the band backed Wenche Myhre on the single "Love A Go Go", before they disbanded in 1968. Most of the musicians in The Sapphires continued with music, in a rock context the late Tom Karlsen is the most important, as drummer in e.g. Dream. Hans Knudsen later wrote books about the authors Rudolf Muus and Sverre Vegenor.

Wilson formed the band Club 7 Explosion in 1968, which i.a. included Inger Lise Andersen (later Rypdal) for a period. He released his first solo LP in 1970, and toured with the group Satan's Horn in Poland in the early 70s. He also wrote music for the films "All Day – All Year" and "We Conserve – You Serve", as well as being behind both the music and the idea for several ballets. Wilson's version of James Brown's "Hot Pants", recorded with Norwegian studio musicians in 1972, was first released in 2007 under the name The Band No Name, by Norwegian Plastic Strip Records on a vinyl single. In 1995 he wrote music for and starred in the television series Sommerfugl, and in the same year he released his second CD, Blues For All Seasons.

Paul Butterfield was a legend long before he ever set foot in Woodstock. Perhaps the first authentic white voice in the blues, his legendary '60s aggregations showed how the blues could progress long after it had ceased to be nourished from the black neighbourhoods. In Butterfield's hands, the blues could be heavy with rock 'n' roll attitude or fleet with jazz. His bands were loud, ballsy, and aware of tradition without being overawed by it. Butterfield was a musical eclectic. His roots were in jazz, blues, R&B, and rock 'n' roll, and he saw nothing wrong with combining them all. That eclecticism could sometimes be his undoing, but at his considerable best Paul Butterfield was a towering giant of American music.

James D. Harris was born in Earle, Arkansas, and relocated with his family to Chicago, Illinois, at the age of seven. He played in several Chicago blues ensembles in the late 1940s. He also worked as a mechanic and as a professional gambler (his nickname came from a dice players' expression, "shake 'em"). His debut recording was the single "Call Me if You Need Me", backed with "Roll Your Moneymaker", released by Artistic Records in 1958, featuring Magic Sam and Syl Johnson on guitar and produced by Willie Dixon. Harris was not paid for the session, but he won $700 shooting craps with label owner Eli Toscano. In 1960, Bluesville Records teamed Harris with the jazz musicians Jack McDuff and Bill Jennings for the album Good Times. His later recording of Mouth Harp Blues returned to a more traditional blues style. Harris toured and was part of the American Folk Blues Festival tour in 1962. Throughout the 1960s Harris and Sam appeared regularly in concert together around Chicago. Harris's patronage of younger musicians helped secure Luther Allison's recording debut. Harris moved on in the late 1960s, recording with Allison in Los Angeles on Further On up the Road. He also played with other harmonica players, such as William Clarke. Harris subsequently recorded for World Pacific. He also owned a nightclub and a record label, but ill health eventually led him to return to Arkansas, where he died, at the age of 68, on March 2, 1990.

Produced in part by Mike Vernon, who worked on The Legendary Christine Perfect Album, this is an entertaining and concise package of ten songs performed by the late Freddie King and a slew of guests. Opening with Gonzalez Chandler's "Pack It Up," featuring the Gonzalez Horn Section, the youthful legend was only 40 years of age when he cut this career LP two years before his death. Though no songs went up the charts like his Top Five hit in 1961, "Hide Away," Burglar is one of those gems that journeymen can put together in their sleep. Tom Dowd produced "Sugar Sweet" at Criteria Studios in Miami, FL, featuring Jamie Oldaker on drums, Carl Radle on bass, and guitarists Eric Clapton and George Terry, which, of course, makes this album highly collectable in the Clapton circles.

The sound doesn't deviate much from the rest of the disc's Mike Vernon production work; it is pure Freddy King, like on the final track, E. King's "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)," where his guitar bursts through the horns and party atmosphere, creating a fusion of the pure blues found on "Sugar Sweet" and the rock that fans of Grand Funk grooved to when he opened for that group and was immortalized in their 1973 number one hit "We're an American Band" a year after this record's release. Sylistically, Freddie King is from the same school as Buddy Guy, two men instrumental in bringing this art form to a mass audience. King stretches those sounds with great fervor on the Hayes/Porter number "I Had a Dream," containing the strength Mark Farner said the blues artist displayed in concert, which could snap a guitar neck.

The voice of Freddie King is what drives J.J. Cale's "I Got the Same Old Blues," the horns and the guitar battling between verses and uniting to ooze under the guitarist's vocal expression. Rhythm guitarist Bob Tench, producer Mike Vernon, bassist DeLisle Harper, drummer Steve Ferrone, and pianist Roy Davies all co-write "Texas Flyer" with Freddie King, a prime example of the modern blues this artist was developing. With Brian Auger and Pete Wingfield contributing to the title track, Jerry Ragovoy's "She's a Burglar," this project stands as a solid representation of an important musician which is as enjoyable as it is historic. /Joe Viglione, AllMusic

More Miles Than Money: Journeys Through American Music is a book I researched and wrote between 2006-2008. In many ways I’d been waiting my entire life to write More Miles. Growing up in Mt Roskill – a working class suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, where there were no music venues, cinemas, pubs, nothing but churches and rugby fields – I took refuge in Mark Twain and Jack Kerouac’s adventures while AM radio (modelled on US radio) spun hits by Freddy Fender, the Amazing Rhythm Aces, Little Feat et al. I dreamed of escaping Auckland’s suburbs to ride Route 66 and Highway 61, ears and eyes open. Eventually I got to live my dream and More Miles is the story of those travels.

I didn’t know it back then but Kiwi radio was often playing music akin to that which Charlie Gillett played on his Honky Tonk radio show in London. Discovering Charlie’s book The Sound Of The City sent me scouring through secondhand bookstores in search of old copies of Cream, Creem and Let It Rock, where the writings of Charlie and other likeminded journalists appeared. I’d go so far as to say that a feature Charlie wrote on the great New Orleans producer-arranger Harold Battiste (Cream #5, Sept 1971) was what initially inspired me to want to search out the largely unsung heroes of American music.

At the same time as reading Charlie Gillett I was buying US imports on a variety of labels, with Arhoolie being my favourite. Mexican culture fascinated me, especially that which arose from the borderlands, the Tex-Mex/Tejano music. (Blame this on my dad taking me to see Sam Peckinpah’s westerns.) Discovering a bin full of Arhoolie Records in a downtown record shop introduced me to a treasure trove of magical Mexican American music and reading about Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz’s efforts to record the finest American vernacular music provided even more inspiration. Later on, Canyon Records would open my ears to how Native American culture celebrated its survival. Around the same time an uncle who loved jazz gave me Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” album – he found it too funky for his tastes. Talk about life-changing records: to this day Curtis remains my favourite US soul singer.

I dedicated More Miles Than Money to Charlie, Chris and the indomitable spirit of Curtis Mayfield. Tragically, Charlie died earlier this year. He, like Curtis, lives on as an indomitable spirit and continues to inspire me. This compilation is, again, dedicated to Charlie, Chris and Curtis: the three Cs who helped me hear America. More Miles Than Money reflects on an America that made the mightiest music of the 20th Century. This compilation aims then to salute those who inspired me to ride US highways and document those I encountered as I wandered through honky-tonks, juke joints and barrios. The Dave Warmerdam Band is a group of young musicians, who in their relatively short existence – the band was founded in 2017 – have already made quite a splash. At the end of 2017 their first CD 'A Tribute To The Masters Of The Blues' was released, which has now been followed by 'Play'. The band consists of new singer Janne Timmer, guitarist Sonny Ray van den Berg, bassist Lars Hoogland, drummer Rick van de Voort and namesake Dave Warmerdam on piano and Hammond. Last year the band won the Dutch Blues Challenge and recently they represented our country at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

On November 24, 2019, the band was at JJ Music House in Zoetermeer where recordings were made, twelve of which have appeared on this CD. It starts with the fun 'Where The F*ck Is My Truck' with only Janne's vocals and Dave's piano. A song in which she sings that she can no longer find her truck because of the many glasses of whiskey. This is followed by 'Daddy Why Don't You Teach Me How To Play The Blues', a beautiful blues ballad. The rest of the CD takes the listener through a mixture of blues, rock, soul and country.

Muddy Waters had only recently completed his Australasia tour that had started in late April and finished in Perth on 11th May 1973. He arrived just two days later in Vancouver before performing five dates at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go in Los Angeles. Waters then made his way into a small downtown Denver nightclub called Ebbet's Field for five shows.

Klondike proudly presents a milestone in vintage blues with a rare and exclusive performance from Mississippi giants Muddy Waters and B. B. King. Sharing the stage for one night only, this 1973 joint appearance is finally available. In 1993 John, his wife Kelly, and their four beautiful daughters moved to Twin Falls, Idaho where he lived for 12 years. John and his family have relocated to the Olympia Washington area. He now lives in the the shadow of beautiful Mount Ranier.An accomplished drummer,guitarist and singer songwriter,John played for years in Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Denver and Nashville clubs. He has performed with John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Jumpin John Sansone, EC Scott, Cookie McGee, Phil Guy ,Henry Cooper, Rockin' Jake, Jimmy Lloyd Rea , Howlin Wolf Jr, John Nemeth, Joe Kelley and many other well known blues and country artists. John's powerful vocals are a feature of his bands,Delta 88 Revival, The Blues Survivors and John Cugno and the Aces. He performs as a solo,duo, trio or full band. Not even the chaos of 2021 could throw Blues For A Cure off track and we are incredibly proud to present the thirteenth volume of our Studio Jam Series, bringing never before heard combinations of world-class musicians jamming together for the very special purpose of battling cancer.

Some exciting connections have occurred at and through Blues For A Cure. One of those magical encounters happened when Mark Puskarich introduced Scotty Bratcher to Bart Walker, ensuing a red hot jam that led to the formation of The Desert City Ramblers, and I’m pleased to report, this very recording! I’m happy that we were finally able to get Scotty Bratcher onto one of these sessions, especially considering the fact that he appeared at our second ever event back in 2009, alongside the immortal Hubert Sumlin.

Matt O’Ree and his band have also been around BFAC since our second ever recording session and it’s been a pleasure to hear their sound evolve over the decade we’ve been working together. The addition of stellar vocalist Eryn O’Ree continues to pay incredible dividends as she brings new life to the favorite “Leave Your Hat On," and she’ll certainly have plenty of imaginations working over time with this sultry reading. Matt’s amazing, unique and ultra soulful guitar work has caught the attention of people like Jon Bon Jovi as he continues to travel the country increasing his audience.

Ohio born and bred Noah Wotherspoon has been a brother in BFAC for nearly a decade as well and his IBC credentials placed him in a well deserved international spotlight that has continued to bring his sound to prestigious venues in Europe and the USA. A guitarist’s guitarist, Noah is a sensitive artist who always explores the less traveled routes to the heart and soul, and he takes the low and dirty road down south on “Going to Mississippi” and ultimately delivers us to the promised land!

I was so excited to be present at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis when Bart Walker and his band won The International Blues Challenge in 2012, and it was even more of a thrill for me to watch my friend on his regular gig, several years later, as guitarist for Hank Williams, Jr. in front of 10,000 people. Bart has used his new connections to secure signed instruments for BFAC from people like ‘Keb ‘Mo and Dolly Parton - Bart’s generosity is as immense as his stunning musical talent.

The pairing of Bart Walker and Scotty Bratcher is a blues rock one-two-punch full of electricity, dynamics, tension and release, and overall guitar artistry and their camaraderie inspires everyone on this session to not only play their very best, but to maybe even take some wild chances.

It was a long time coming and after several attempts, we were finally able to bring Nick Schnebelen back to Blues For A Cure. Trampled Under Foot swept the 2008 IBC and they were the core of the band on our first three volumes of this series, and eight years later Nick brings his super fine band, Adam Hag­erman on drums and Cliff Moore on bass.

Lenny Paul returns with rock solid bass work that we’ve come to love and rely on, as well as a memorable original tune with an inspired vocal.

Tony’s Treasures, with producer Mark Puskarich and engineer Cody Romshak at the helm, has hosted this series for a decade now (with the first three volumes recorded at Central City in Columbus). The studio is a comfortable home away from home for all of us musicians who we’ve come to appreciate as a sort of “fantasy camp” where we can truly disconnect with the distractions of city life to immerse ourselves in the music in a first class recording studio with all of the modern comforts and the latest recording technology.

Regarded as one of the greatest and most influential blues guitarists of all time, Roy Buchanan never achieved widespread fame in his own right, but his exciting brand of blues rock and guitar harmonics provided inspiration for everyone from John Lennon to Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson, Jerry Garcia, Gary Moore and Billy Gibbons. He was a pioneer of the Telecaster electric guitar and at one point he was even asked to join The Rolling Stones as replacement for Brian Jones but turned it down due to personal circumstances.

The son of a sharecropper and Pentecostal preacher from Ozark, Arkansas, his musical roots were sown while growing up in Pixley, California, singing gospel in church and hearing country music on the radio. He first started playing guitar at the age of seven and initially specialised in steel guitar; the track 'Mrs Pressure' on his Grammy nominated album 'When a Guitar Sings the Blues' in 1985 was a tribute to his steel guitar teacher. At the age of 15, he moved from Pixley to Los Angeles and landed under the wing of band leader Johnny Otis and was strongly influenced by the string-bending blues playing of guitarist Jimmy Nolen. Having formed his own band The Heartbeats, he went on to make his recording debut in 1958 backing Dale Hawkins and later played with Ronnie Hawkins and Robbie Robertson, who went on to form The Band.
Throughout the 1960s he was a highly regarded session guitarist playing on recordings by Freddy Cannon and Danny Denver before putting down his guitar to train as a hairdresser. However, his musical career was dramatically re-launched by a TV documentary which resulted in a solo record deal and the invitation to join The Rolling Stones. He went on to record five acclaimed albums for Polydor and three for Atlantic, but quit in frustration in 1981 after reportedly feeling creatively stifled. When Alligator Records promised the artistic freedom he craved, he returned with his most famous work 'When a Guitar Sings the Blues', followed by 'Dancing On the Edge' (1986) and 'Hot Wires' (1987). However, a long history of heavy drinking resulted in tragedy when he was arrested for intoxication and later commited suicide in his jail cell in Fairfax County, Virginia in 1988.

Roy Head is a kick-ass, redneck, rock 'n' roll legend and a real bluesman. He achieved everlasting fame with his gigantic 1965 hit, "Treat Her Right," which rocketed to No. 2 on both the pop and R&B charts, falling behind only the Beatles' "Yesterday." "Treat Her Right" — produced by the legendary Huey Meaux and released on Don Robey's Back Beat label — is estimated to have sold more than four million copies and has been covered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Page.

Born in 1943 in Three Rivers, Texas, Head and his band of buddies, billing themselves as Roy Head and The Traits, scored their first record deal in 1958 with TNT Music in San Antonio while still in high school. The group released five records on TNT between 1958 and 1961. They had several regional hits before "Treat Her Right," and Head became a talked-about entertainer with dance moves so wild and fancy he began drawing comparisons to James Brown. And he still brings it, gyrating like a man half his age and working his microphone like a yo-yo. Although Head was a white singer, he'd recorded a song in an R&B style and thus became part of the mid-'60s blue-eyed soul movement that also included groups such as the Righteous Brothers and the Boxtops.

After "Treat Her Right," Head scored two more Top 40 hits with "Just A Little Bit" and "Apple Of My Eye." He also landed a number of hits on the country charts between 1974 and 1985. Roy Head and the Traits were induced into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2007.

A different and interesting spin issued via Koko Mojo introducing vocal groups from the Latin quarters of America. New album ‘Vocal Group Harmonies – Let’s Go Latin’ gives voice to an earlier generation of Latinos with a keen interest in the rhythm and blues sounds of the times. Such was the impact that black African American rhythm and blues was either replicated or given a slight twist of Latin influences. Boasting a track list of twenty-five songs the album ‘Vocal Group Harmonies – Let’s Go Latin’ is certainly full of musical flavour ranging from the more familiar-sounding rhythm and blues of The Roketones’ ‘Mexico’ to easily recognisable Latin sounds of ‘Mama, Mama, Mama’ and paint stripping vocals of Lou Perez. In other segments there’s a real mashup of the “traditional” with Latin American references and signposted via Los Llopis and track ‘Quito A Poguito’, The Love Notes’ ‘Sweet Lulu’ which vocally takes its inspiration from doo-wop and with Latin inspiring its beat. Additionally, there are cover songs to be found and rather good examples from Trio Los Flamingos with ‘Sh-Boom’, to a version of Neil Sedaka’s ‘Oh Carol’ popping up past the hallway mark and supplied by singing pair Duo Dinamico. With many combinations, in addition to straight examples of rhythm and blues for example, ‘Vocal Group Harmonies – Let’s Go Latin’ shows imagination by offering something considerably different from what has gone before as the album provides an insight of two cultures coming together to produce an exciting and diverse take on more traditional sounds and, in the process, a slice of musical history.

Chicago guitarist Jimmy Dawkins would have preferred to leave his longtime nickname "Fast Fingers" behind. It was always something of a stylistic misnomer anyway; Dawkins' West Side-styled guitar slashed and surged, but seldom burned with incendiary speed. Dawkins' blues were generally of the brooding, introspective variety - he didn't engage in flashy pyrotechnics or outrageous showmanship.

It took a long time for Dawkins to progress from West Side fixture to nationally known recording artist. He rode a Greyhound bus out of Mississippi in 1955, dressing warmly to ward off the Windy City's infamous chill factor. Only trouble was, he arrived on a sweltering July day! Harpist Billy Boy Arnold offered the newcomer encouragement, and he eventually carved out a niche on the competitive West Side scene (his peers included Magic Sam and Luther Allison).

Sam introduced Dawkins to Delmark Records boss Bob Koester. Fast Fingers, Dawkins' 1969 debut LP for Delmark - which remained his best album - was a taut, uncompromising piece of work that won the Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz from the Hot Club of France in 1971 as the year's top album. Andrew "Big Voice" Odom shared the singing and Otis Rush the second guitar duties on Dawkins' 1971 encore, All for Business.

But after his Delmark LP Blisterstring, Dawkins' subsequent recordings lacked intensity until 1991's oddly titled Kant Sheck Dees Bluze for Chicago's Earwig Records. After that, Dawkins waxed discs for Ichiban and Fedora, and continued to tour extensively until health problems slowed him down. This is a long-awaited release (on Black Top) by a promising guitarist. Rusty Zinn carries more weight than the guitar-slinger epithet tells. He is an exceptional songwriter, as the five tunes he wrote or co-wrote on this disc will show. Plus, he is a singer and is exceptionally good at handling other people's material. Give a listen to the treatment he gives to Robert Nighthawk's "Someday"; he makes it his own song without messing up the writer's intentions.

A very large plus is that the material he is doing isn't the Chicago sound that is so popular with a lot of young guitarists. He is using Austin, TX as his base and has quite a bit of the Texas countrified blues influence in his music. This is music that at times strays into the West Texas bluesy countrified sound of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. It is definitely a more laid-back and rural sound that leaves room for each of the players in the two bands he uses to great advantage here, to give short but effective solos. It is more ensemble and group effort than individual flash. Both groups are equally tight and able to go with the song, one has just a little more of a citified sound while still avoiding that Chicago guitar-driven emphasis.

He uses his bandmates very well; look at the room he gives Jimmy Pugh to stretch out on organ in "Confessin' About My Baby." Or maybe you'd prefer the space Little Charlie Baty fills taking over the lead guitar and solos on "Someday." If you have any doubts about his roots, just listen to what he does by himself on the Rick Estrin tune "Come Get These Blues Up Off Me." This is a another top-notch disc of interesting blues on the Black Top label that you'll want to get your hands on. /Bob Gottlieb, AllMusic

One of America's finest Blues singers, the impressive Willie Mae 'Big Mama' Thornton is probably best known as the originator of 'Hound Dog', Elvis Presley's most successful single, and 'Ball 'n' Chain', one of Janis Joplin's signature songs. Thornton's performances on the Blues, R&B, and Rock circuits riveted audiences. Her booming voice, sometimes 200-pound frame, sexually explicit lyrics and exuberant stage manner had people stomping their feet and shouting encouragement.

This quintessential collector's edition contains 29 fabulous remastered studio tracks she made for different labels, such as Peacock, Duke, Irma and Bay-Tone, between 1950 and 1961. These songs mark some of the finest works from the golden age of Rhythm & Blues. For many years, the attention paid to Excello's unparalleled catalogue of Louisiana swamp blues, though certainly deserved, has had the unfortunate side effect of obscuring the label's rich catalogue of jump blues and boogie sides. Many of Excello's earliest and most fascinating records were made by urban Nashville combos that toiled on the bandstands of the city's north side. Contrary to popular perception, Nashville had a large, active R&B scene during the post-WWII years.

Located on Fourth Avenue North, the New Era Club, especially, was a hotbed of piano and saxophone rhythm. Artists like Shy Guy Douglas, Good Rockin' Sam Beasley, Bernie Hardison, and the ubiquitous Kid King's Combo (the backup band on untold numbers of Excello sides) were all popular at the New Era - as were out-of-town regulars like Little Richard and Ivory Joe Hunter. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Daniel Cooper

Another ex-Muddy Waters employee, Jerry Portnoy's biting, flailing harmonica style rivals any within contemporary blues circles for fluency, range, or emotional range. His vocals are effective enough, especially when punctuated by his harp accompaniment and solos. Portnoy began his professional musical career as part of Muddy Waters' backing band in the early '70s. Jerry replaced Mojo Buford in 1974 and he stayed with the band for six years. During his tenure with Waters, he appeared on the albums I'm Ready, Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, and King Bee. In 1980, Portnoy, bassist Calvin Jones, pianist Pinetop Perkins, and drummer Willie Smith all left Muddy to form the Legendary Blues Band.

Throughout the early '80s, Portnoy stayed with the Legendary Blues Band, recording the albums Life of Ease and Red Hot & Blue. In 1986, he left the band and he briefly retired. By the end of 1987, he had returned to the scene, founding the Broadcasters with Ronnie Earl. Two years later, he and Earl had a falling out, causing Jerry to leave the group. Portnoy formed his own band, the Streamliners in 1989. Two years later, the band released their debut, Poison Kisses, on Modern Blues Recordings. Between 1991 and 1993, Portnoy was part of Eric Clapton's All-Star Blues Band. After leaving Clapton's band in 1993, he played a number of concerts, releasing his second album, Home Run Hitter, in 1995. On September 3, 2021, the Southern rock band Harlem Lake made their debut with the single The River during their support show for Walter Trout in 013, Tilburg. With their roots in blues music, the band effortlessly explores the boundaries of the time-honored genre and released a refreshing first single in preparation for their debut album.

Inspired by the Mississippi River, singer and songwriter Janne Timmer reclaims her strength in an unhealthy relationship. "I'm not gonna teach you if you never learn" she sings after her other half loses her for the umpteenth time. The song was written in Memphis, TN - where the band represented the Netherlands at the International Blues Challenge 2020 - after an evening stroll along the Ol' Man River. The female fronted blues rock band reached the semifinals and went home with many new American fans. As the band name suggests, Harlem Lake hails from the Haarlemmermeerpolder. Under the band name Dave Warmerdam Band , the members met during their teenage years in the shared love of blues music in 2017.

Four years later they changed the band name to Harlem Lake when they reinvented themselves while writing their debut album "A Fool's Paradise Vol. 1". The eight songs on it tell about how we constantly try to balance between our internal and external world. Love, longing and loss always teach us new things about ourselves and Harlem Lake manages to capture this effortlessly in recognizable, self-critical songs. While still paying tribute to the blues, they come with a fresh Southern sound inspired by artists like Joe Bonamassa, Mark Knopfler, Little Feat and Beth Hart.

This Gospel Truth would allow the guitarist to experience an excellent second half of her career. A few months after the release of the disc, Sister Rosetta took part in her first visit to our continent. An excellent Gospel album in public with a repertoire fragrant with Rag, Holly Blues and a touch of Rock'n'Roll. Note the excellent collaboration with the Sally Jenkins Singers, a vocal ensemble that recorded a few pieces for Sharp, a subsidiary of Savoy. Be careful not to confuse it with the vinyl of the same name published by Verve. Has been reissued in CD format with bonus features. We'll stick with the original in which Sister Rosetta sometimes feels like she's holding the audience in the palm of her hand.

Before his performance at the Brezoi Open Air Blues Festival in July 2019, Oscar Benton asks how long he is expected to play. “As long as you want!” responds the organizer. The Dutch blues singer is not just any artist in Romania; he is a star. Benton hasn't traveled the twenty-five yards from his car to the backstage caravan when he's already being ambushed. People who want to take a picture with him. People with piles of CDs and LPs to get signed. Records that many Dutch pop and rock fans did not know they had ever been released. At least one million copies of Bensonhurst Blues must have been sold. Benton himself likes to talk about 'tens of millions' in his enthusiasm. In any case, after 1981, the singer never needed a regular job again. "To work? I wouldn't even know how to write that."
