We made these recordings with Burton Gaar in 1997 and since Black and Tan Records didn’t exist at that time we licensed them to CrossCut Records (One Hundred Pounds Of Trouble). Now is the time to release them on our own label. Besides Burton on vocals and bass the recordings feature Roel Spanjers on keyboards, Frank Bolder on drums and myself on guitar.

The tall Louisiana blues man Burton Gaar started playing bass guitar at age fourteen and at age eighteen Burton started singing on stage. As a young man, Burton was invited to join Slim Harpo’s band as a bass player. In the 60’s Burton and his band (Boogie Kings) were very active in the Louisiana R&B circuit. As the 70’s Burton was forced to take a normal day job for a year. After this experience he was determined to be self supporting as a musician. He joined the band of Rockin’ Sidney and he managed to make ends meet by either backing-up this zydeco superstar or playing with his own band. After recording his first CD “Still Singing The Blues” for Lanor Records Burton became firmly resolved to pursue his number one goal; making a name for himself. He did a few European tours during which he performed in Holland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Norway. Burton passed away in 2011 after a brief battle with cancer. ~Jan Mittendorp

The power and honesty of his unmistakable voice, combined with the meaningful lyric content of his songs, powerful grooves, and clever arrangements, authenticates Gaar's unique brand of Louisiana blues.

Patrick Henry began performing at the age of seven when he sang his favorite hymn "One More River to Cross" in a little church in the town of Sunset, Louisiana. From these early beginnings Mr. Henry remained in the town of Sunset where he joined the Liberation Band in 1978 which was the start of his professional career. Patrick Henry & The Liberation Band is credited to three albums for Lanor Records and had released albums sporadically under his own name leading up to the 2007 release "Contagious".

Swamp Blues, the looser, more rhythmic variation of the standard Louisiana sound, also brings more contemporary elements of New Orleans, zydeco, soul music, and Cajun to bear on its style. The guitar work is simple but effective, and is heavily influenced by the boogie patterns used on Jimmy Reed records, with liberal doses of Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters. Unlike the heavy backbeat of the more popular urban styles, its rhythm can be best described as laid-back, making even its most uptempo offerings share the same mood and ambience of the most desultory of slow blues. ~AllMusic

miXendorp is the project of one man from the Netherlands, who’s dedicated to updating the blues for present times. His recent release on European label Black And Tan Records is prefaced with exciting potential: “The blues used to be party music; now it can be played again at the hippest modern parties, festival and clubs….. and still feel down home.”

The description for Black And Tan Edits reads a bit like an infomercial, and there are some cheese qualities here for sure. But the blues have been bastardized and neglected plenty in the present day, and these musical spins are at least unconventionally fun party music that remind one of the heyday of the genre.

miXendorp describes his mixes as “blues + beat”, and the combination is apt; he applies everything from house beats and new age percussion to classic singer-songwriter blues. Such modern day genre-mashing turns the blues into club-ready hits which feel so much like a merging of two worlds that it becomes important to remember that the originals are not relics of the past; they are in fact fairly recent, pulled from the past 14 years of releases by Black And Tan.

Cajun bass player and singer Burton Gaar grew up listening to the sounds of great blues artists such as electric guitarist B.B. King and vocalist Bobby "Blue" Bland. Before he hit his teen years, he decided he wanted to become a musician and play the blues, too. Within a couple of years, as the '50s were drawing to a close, he got his chance when he started working in his hometown of Baton Rouge, alongside blues legend Slim Harpo. Frequently, they worked the city's Glass Hat Club. Gaar also played for a short time with the Boogie Kings. During the '60s, Gaar went on to form a band of his own and they found work playing backup for visiting artists to Baton Rouge, a list that included zydeco artist Rockin' Sidney and soulful singer Percy Sledge. Gaar drew such inspiration from Rockin' Sidney that in the future he would dedicate one of his albums, Mighty Long Road, to the zydeco musician. Despite the fact that Gaar made music for almost four decades, he didn't record a solo album of his own until 1996, when the Cajun-influenced Still Singing the Blues was issued with the Mudcats. The following year in Holland, he recorded One Hundred Pounds of Trouble, an album that performed well internationally. He is one of the musicians featured in the book Blues: Keeping the Faith by Keith Shadwick. ~ Linda Seida

Garr assembled a premier group of musicians. Some appeared on his previous album, Mighty Long Road. Randy Coleman is once again on bass (Home of the Blues was also recorded in his studio, Colemine Studios in Nashville). Other personnel include Shane Theriot (Neville Brothers) on guitar, Tim Gonzales on harp, former Allman Bros. Band member Johnny Neel (who co-wrote track 8, "My Little Feel Good," with D. Jones and R. Cullison) on organ and keys, and Marty Ojeda on tenor sax. Floyd Saizon handles drum chores this time around and works great with the other members of the rhythm section. The horn section is top notch and includes Steve Herrman on trumpet, Dennis Taylor and Ojeda on tenor saxes, and Tom McGinnley filling up the bottom with baritone sax. Danny Hamblin and Clay Krasner handle some of the guitar and bass tracks.

Burton Gaar - Mighty Long Road

Straight out of New Orleans comes well-traveled Cajun bluesman Burton Gaar with Mighty Long Road, his latest collection of all original songs. Born in Baton Rouge, Gaar defines himself as "Louisiana proud," and in a previous incarnation as Burton Gaar & the Mudcats, championed his home state with the release of a Cajun, blues and zydeco true-to-his-roots CD entitled Still Singing the Blues. At age 16, Gaar played bass for a short stint with Slim Harpo, who became a major influence, and in the ‘60s, Gaar gigged with the hot R&B band, the Boogie Kings. He also worked with Percy Sledge and Rockin’ Sidney’s band. Mighty Long Road is dedicated to the memory of Sidney Simien, who Gaar holds up as his hero.

Even though the CD cover pictures Gaar holding a Danelectro guitar, the liner notes only credit him with "vocals, all tracks." So, it’s not clear whether he’s playing guitar on it or not. Three other really fine guitar players who collaborated on the project are listed, however, so I guess it’s not that important.

The entire CD was recorded at Randy Coleman’s studio in Nashville. Coleman, incidentally, played bass on all the tracks, sang backup, and engineered and mixed the entire album — an accomplishment that deserves and needs to be mentioned here.

Dubbed "One of Louisiana’s hidden treasures" by Blues Gazette, Gaar has also received praise from no less than Chubby Carrier, Carl Weathersby and Charlie Musselwhite. Mighty Long Road is pure pleasure. Gaar’s vocal work is outstanding, as is his songwriting, and the band cooks. Nothing more needs to be said. ~Sonny Boy Lee
