Two-time Blues Music Award winner for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, Curtis Salgado returns with Legacy Rewind: Live in ’25, a vibrant live album that captures the raw energy and deep soul of his 2025 performance at The Triple Door in Seattle, Washington. Recorded in April 2025, the album documents a special night in one of Seattle’s most intimate and acoustically rich venues. Salgado carefully selected songs from across his catalog, revisiting key moments from his career while allowing room for spontaneity and improvisation.

Legacy Rewind: Live in ’25 blends Chicago blues roots with Memphis soul warmth and touches of West Coast swing. The tight rhythm section drives the set forward, while Salgado’s voice - gritty, expressive, and deeply human - anchors every song. The recording preserves the warmth and atmosphere of the room, giving listeners the feeling of standing in the club, just a few feet from the stage. The result is a timeless live document that reflects both Salgado’s musical legacy and his continued evolution as a performer. /The Blues Magazine

Curtis Salgado - Fine By Me

Album: Fine By Me
Size: 102,9 MB
Time: 44:17
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: Soul/Blues/Americana mix
Art: Front

1. My Girl's A Nut (2:32)
2. Better Things To Lie About (3:55)
3. Gonna Forget About You (Feat. Robert Cray) (3:43)
4. Fine By Me (3:49)
5. Niki Hoeky (3:08)
6. Hear The Lonely Hearts (3:48)
7. Safe At Home (2:41)
8. The Big Chagrin (4:34)
9. The Only Way Out (3:02)
10. Cheap Stuff (4:31)
11. You Give The Blues A Bad Name (4:48)
12. Under New Management (3:41)

This veteran blues artist has a sense of humor that lightens up the dark recesses of blues. His opening tune “My Girl’s a Nut,” has a Roger Miller-type of country humor tacked onto a blues drive. With cut 2 Curtis slides into a more soulful position with “Better Things To Lie About” & the brass punctuations work solidly with his enthusiastic vocals. The brass doesn’t play it straight it’s arranged like a chorale of voices that answer each other with deep saxes, sharp trumpets & Curtis’ vocals echoing through a street that’s empty except for a whiplash harmonica blast. Cool tune. This out-funks most funk 70s bands & with the addition of the bluesy harmonica adds a soulful twist.

Salgado’s 1980s former boss guitarist/vocalist Robert Cray guests on “Forget About You,” a galloping blues saloon unified vocal variable that’s simply blues having fun. There are 12 invitations to some soulful blues on Fine By Me that can also lasso ears unfamiliar with the genre since Curtis is an artist who is also entertaining. The album features a variety of song styles from blues, gospel, R&B, jazz, funk R&R & soul with dashes of mixes that bring out the Salgado (harmonica) distinctive flavors. Curtis produced the album & the deep gospel efforts feature the harmonies of The Sons of the Soul Revivers (brothers James, Walter & Dwayne Morgan).

By the tracks “You Give The Blues a Bad Name,” & “Under New Management” there’s a tint of Paul Butterfield Blues Band when they employed some brass in the late 60s. The tune has a Boz Scaggs feel & it drips off the blues sultry & swampy. “Under,” is a little more commercial-mainstream than many other tunes. But it still holds since it’s played & sung with well-articulated harmonica & piano. Snapping fingers is a nice touch. Curtis may have a blues pathology in his voice but he’s cleverly alive as an entertainer. /John Apice, Americana Highways

Curtis Salgado - Damage Control

04. Precious Time (4:02)

10. Damage Control (4:03)
11. Truth Be Told (3:15)
12. The Fix Is In (5:00)
13. Slow Down (3:26)

Salgado does on Damage Control what Salgado does best. He reaches into into his multi-genre bag of tricks bringing out the best in blues, soul, rock, and more. His vocals weave, bob and soar, at times jabbing with nuance, and then striking with unlimited power; from the singer-songwriter vibe of “Precious Time” to the 50s sock hop feel of “Count to Three.”

Damage Control is no fly-by-night release. The album was well-planned and exceptionally executed. Produced by Salgado it was recorded in three studios with three different groups of musicians, featuring some of the very best players in the business. At Nashville, Tennessee’s Rock House Recording, top-notch support included guitarist George Marinelli (Bonnie Raitt), keyboardist Kevin McKendree (Brian Setzer, Delbert McClinton, Tinsley Ellis), singer Wendy Moton (Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton) and special guest Cajun accordionist and vocalist Wayne Toups. At Studio City, California’s Ultratone Studios, guitarist/bassist Johnny Lee Schell (Otis Rush, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt), pianists Mike Finnigan (Jimi Hendrix, Paul Simon) and Jim Pugh (B.B. King, Etta James, Robert Cray), drummer Tony Braunagel (B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt) brought the goods. And at Greaseland in San Jose, California, guitarist/bassist Kid Andersen (Rick Estrin, Charlie Musselwhite), bassist Jerry Jemmott (B.B. King, Aretha Franklin) and drummer Kevin Hays (Robert Cray) added their fuel to the fire.

Born in 1954, Salgado grew up in Eugene, Oregon with music all around him. He attended a Count Basie performance when he was 13 and decided then and there that music was his calling. After getting his hands on a harmonica, Curtis began devouring the blues of Little Walter and Paul Butterfield, and taught himself to play.

By his early 20s he was already making a name for himself in Eugene, Oregon’s bar scene, first as the vocalist/harmonica player of The Nighthawks, and later as co-leader of The Robert Cray Band. After Salgado and Cray parted ways in 1982, Curtis went on to front Roomful Of Blues, singing and touring with them from 1984 through 1986. Back home in Oregon, he formed a new band, Curtis Salgado & The Stilettos, and was once again tearing it up on the club scene, and opening for the Steve Miller Band in 1992. In 1995, he spent a short stint as the lead singer for Santana. All the while Curtis was honing his craft, and writing original songs.

Curtis’ passionate and insightful songwriting shines through on 12 of the 13 tracks. The only cover on Damage Control is the diametrically titled “Slow Down,” a Larry Williams hit previously covered by The Beatles. This hard-charger closes the album, leaving the listener breathless and wanting more.

Other standouts on the release include the blues story-telling of “The Fix is In,” the Cajun flavored “Truth Be Told,” the autobiographical “I Don’t Do That No More,” and the mid-paced title track of which Salgado says,”“Life is all about damage control…trouble and then some. It’s about dealing with what gets thrown at you and saying, ‘I ain’t finished yet.’”

For all of his successes, Salgado is no stranger to adversity. During his career, he has overcome multiple health challenges, battling back from liver cancer in 2006 and lung cancer in 2008 and 2012. In March 2017 he underwent quadruple bypass surgery. He’s not only come back stronger, he’s become one of the genre’s most prolific songwriters, shining that brilliant light on this album.

Curtis Salgado is the personification of grace under pressure. Taking everything that life can hand him and throwing it back like a World Series pitcher, he’s powered forward, performing his personal Damage Control. “I want people to relate to the songs,” he says. “You can dance to it but the words have to carry the weight. I know if a song hits me, it’ll hit others just as hard.” ~JD Nash

Otis Grand - who is, unquestionably, the biggest star of British Blues and the only UK artist in the genre to have had significant success in America for decades - releases his brand new album" Perfume & Grime " on Sequel Records. This new release was recorded in New Orleans on Feb. 1996 with some of America's top blues musicians, includinging Joe Louis Walker, Curtis Salgado, Luther Allison, and Eddie Bo.

While retaining his signature sound," Perfume & Grime " finds Otis moving forwards to create contemporary blues with the flavours and crosscurrents of Rap, World music, New Orleans Funk, and southern Soul.

"I am very excited about this new album," explains Otis " I have written with the influence of my Blues mentors in mind but also thrown in contemporary attitudes and stylings that I like. PERFUME stands for the beauty and soul Blues. GRIME stands for my hard-hitting and nasty style of guitar playing."

Curtis Salgado - Soul Activated

Size: 112,4 MB
Time: 48:18
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2001
Styles: Blues Rock, Blues Soul
Art: Full

01. Old Enough To Know Better (4:26)
02. I'd Rather Be Blind (5:19)

04. Summertime Life (4:17)

08. Funny Man (4:11)
09. Every Time You Go Away (4:17)
10. Hip Hip Baby (2:31)
11. More Love Less Attitude (4:56)

The album's title leaves no doubt as to its contents: Soul Activated is all about rockin' soul, classic R&B, and vocal throwbacks to the glory days of Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and the like. Curtis Salgado plunges headlong into a vocal potpourri, dishing out some very hip covers and adding four tunes of his own. The covers include the Hall & Oates/Paul Young hit "Everytime You Go Away," a funky rendering of Leon Russell's "I'd Rather Be Blind" (Freddie King), Jimmy Cliff's reggae smash "The Harder They Come," and a duet with Lou Ann Barton called "Hip Hip Baby" that features Jimmie Vaughan on guitar. Barton used to sing the tune with Stevie Ray Vaughan in her hometown of Austin (before SRV's tenure with Double Trouble). Salgado's originals extract powerful visuals, from the relaxed yet uplifting "Summertime Life" to the minor-key "Funny Man," a tale that tells a story most probably haven't heard before: one of losing the girl to a comedian. Salgado sings, "The funny man ain't funny when he takes your love from you." Ouch! "Lip Whippin" is a traditional blues tune. It's a great harp instrumental that is arguably the best cut on the album, but it sounds ridiculously out of place sandwiched in between all the other "soul activated" tunes. Those are filled with cool phrasing, hot sweat, and a helluva voice. ~Ann Wickstrom

More piano-based and jazz-influenced than anything else, West Coast Blues is -- in actuality -- the California style, with all of the genre's main practitioners coming to prominence there, if not actual natives of the state in particular. In fact, the state and the style played host to a great many post-war Texas guitar expatriates, and their jazzy, T-Bone Walker style of soloing would become an earmark of the genre. West Coast blues also features smooth, honey-toned vocals, frequently crossing into urban blues territory. The West Coast style was also home to numerous jump-blues practitioners, as many traveling bands of the 1940s ended up taking permanent residence there. Its current practitioners work almost exclusively in the standard small-combo format.

While British blues guitarist Otis Grand’s albums have received critical acclaim in Europe, somehow they slipped through the cracks in the U.S. market. Originally released in 1994, Nothing Else Matters was reissued in 2003 as part of the Sanctuary Blues Masters series. On this date, Grand pays tribute to guitar hero T-Bone Walker; Grand’s original composition, “5 to 99 Blues,” employs Walker’s famous riffs and he performs sincere covers of “All Night Long” and “Looking Good” from the Magic Sam catalog.

Lending a hand on the disc are Curtis Salgado and Sugar Ray Norcia, who split vocal duties; the House of Blues Horns; and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who blows harp and sings on his self-penned track, “Things I Forgot to Do.” Nothing Else Matters is an enjoyable modern blues date that’s not afraid to celebrate vintage influences. /Al Campbell, AllMusic

In the argot of American popular music, the word "horn" is used for any wind instrument, most often the saxophone, but it is also applied to all woodwinds and brasses, especially those played by soloists. In this context "horn section" refers to a group of wind and brass instrumentalists — usually comprising saxophone, trumpet and trombone players; sometime singularly, and sometimes in pairs or more of each instrument. The horn section usually has written parts which are prepared by an arranger using orchestration to provide a harmonic and melodic accompaniment to a song or musical group. In some cases, the horn section may improvise a simple backing part using well-known "stock" lines.

Horn sections are an integral part of musical genres such as jazz, R&B, blues, funk, calypso, ska, soul music and gospel music. Most of these horn sections feature some combination of saxophones, trumpets and trombones. More rarely, other wind or brass instruments such as flute, clarinet or tuba may be added. Other popular musical genres, such as rock and pop, also use horn sections.

Award-winning soul, blues and R&B vocalist Curtis Salgado’s earth-shaking vocals and forceful harmonica playing have been devastating audiences around the world for over 30 years. Guitarist Alan Hager has been wowing fellow musicians from his hometown of Portland, Oregon and beyond for decades. Hager has been jamming with Salgado since 2003, and joined his band full-time in 2015. Together, the two blues fans and friends took time out of their busy touring schedule to record Rough Cut, a stripped-down album featuring a potent mix of newly written, timeless originals and carefully chosen blues covers. “We did it for the love of the music,” says Salgado. “This is where our hearts are. These are deep songs that we love to play.” That love comes through loud and clear on Rough Cut. Produced by Salgado and Hager, the 13 songs on the album (including six originals) range from plaintive to playful. Recorded in one live unrehearsed take, the original I Will Not Surrender, with its haunting and sparse soundscape, showcases some of Hager’s strongest guitar work, and some of the most profoundly emotive vocals Salgado has ever laid down. The canine-lover’s anthem, I Want My Dog To Live Longer (The Greatest Wish), is already a huge fan favorite. Salgado’s soulful singing and Hager’s elegant slide guitar playing shine on Elmore James’ You Got To Move and Muddy Waters’ I Can’t Be Satisfied. “He’s the best player in the business, unlike anybody else,” Salgado says of Hager. “One reason I made this record was to show him off.” Born in Portland, Oregon, Alan Hager has taken a long and fascinating journey to his current spot as lead guitarist in Salgado’s band. He first picked up a guitar at age ten and became a blues and jazz prodigy. He was playing local clubs as a teenager before heading to Boston’s Berklee School Of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of jazz guitar legend Pat Metheny. A year later he was studying classical music at the famed New England Conservatory of Music, where he graduated in 1979. During the 1980s he toured as part of a classical guitar duo and took up teaching, which he still does. But he never fell out of love with the blues, especially the old Delta sounds of Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson and Skip James. He moved back to Portland in 1988 and soon met fellow blues aficionado Curtis Salgado. They have been making music together since 2003, with Curtis’ voice and harmonica and Alan’s hypnotic guitar work perfectly complementing each other. Born in Everett, Washington, Curtis Salgado grew up in Eugene, Oregon. By his early 20s, he was already making a name for himself on Eugene’s bar scene with his band The Nighthawks, and later as co-leader of The Robert Cray Band. Salgado quickly developed into a player and singer of remarkable depth, with vocal and musical influences including Otis Redding, O.V. Wright, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson I and II, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Howlin’ Wolf and Magic Sam. NPR calls him “a blues icon” with a “huge voice.” In 1977, Salgado met actor John Belushi while the comedian was filming Animal House. Salgado and Belushi spent hours playing old records, with Belushi soaking up the music like a sponge. He used his new blues knowledge to create the The Blues Brothers. Once Salgado joined forces with The Robert Cray Band, he shared stages with many of his heroes, including Muddy Waters, Bobby Bland, Albert Collins and Bonnie Raitt. He fronted Roomful Of Blues, singing and touring with them from 1984 through 1986. Forming his own band, he released the first of his ten solo albums in 1991. Salgado joined Alligator Records in 2012, debuting with the award-winning, critically acclaimed Soul Shot in 2012 followed by The Beautiful Lowdown in 2016. Salgado won three 2013 Blues Music Awards including the coveted B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year. He also won for Soul Blues Male Artist Of The Year, and for Soul Blues Al...

The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise is one of those excursions on which a batch of musicians are put on a cruise ship with their fans for a few days of playing on the high seas, which makes it an ideal occasion for a live album packed with guests. Joe Louis Walker, appearing with his regular backup band (Linwood Taylor on second guitar, Kevin Burton on keyboards, Henry Oden on bass, and Jeff Minnieweather on drums), welcomes 18 guests on these 11 tracks, most prominent among them Johnny Winter and Duke Robillard.

In fact, his interactions with such fellow guitarists are among the high points on the disc. Walker revisits his own repertoire, dating back to his debut album, Cold Is the Night ("Ten More Shows to Play") and its follow-up, The Gift ("747"), along with tracks from his last couple of records. His is an electric blues sound that, while rooted in tradition, also came along after such blues-rock acts as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, and there are occasional echoes of that style. It may be that, given the circumstances, the players were inclined to let themselves go a bit more than usual; after all, nobody had to worry about driving home.

In any case, the arrangements can be stretched out to the point of being a little loose and ragged, and the singing, while enthusiastic, can be too. Most of that singing is done by Walker himself, and it's possible that he makes a point in a sleeve note of saying the album has no overdubs or fixes as a way of explaining the occasional croakiness in his voice. Such imperfections are more than offset, however, by the enthusiasm with which everybody plays. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

Much has been written about Barrelhouse Chuck's piano playiing over the past 35 years. Numerous references have been made to the influences of his mentors and friends Sunnyland Slim and Little Brother Montgomery, or his uncanny ability to play Chicago blues piano with deft ferocity like Otis Spann or the plantive emotion of Leroy Carr. However, little has ever been documented about his astounding talents with the Compact Combo Organs that make up an integral part of his repertoire, and are a key ingredient to what he refers to as "his sound". Chuck's life long love affair with the Combo Organ started early on. As a young boy he fell under the infectious Vox Organ riff of the 1966 garage classic "96 Teras" by ? And The Mysterians. "I just loved that song, and would look for it everytime that I saw a juke-box."

Featuring Joel Paterson, Billy Flynn, Hash Brown and Jeremy Johnson this set of 60's style blues sounds feature Chuck behind the mighty Combo Electric Organ. Think of Earl Hooker of Johnny Big Moose Walker's recordings from the 60's and you get the idea. Of course a stellar line up in support with S.P. Leary, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Richard Innes, Eddie Taylor Jr. and Curtis Salgado being just some of the many featured players.

11. If Nothing Ever Changes (5:18)
12. Hymn For Lonely Hearts (3:47)

Amidst all the hype, posturing and polished glam in today's music industry, when an unpretentious soul singer rises to the occasion and steps up to the microphone, it is a joyous occasion. With impeccable gospel, R&B, and soul credentials, vocalist Wee Willie Walker has been paying dues since his first recording for Goldwax Records in 1967. After shuffling between Memphis and Nashville, he wound up and persevered in the Minneapolis music scene, singing for various acts, and in 2002 put out a self-titled record, leading to fronting local band The Butanes. This association resulted in a series of records, and several tours abroad, yielding the opportunities to keep himself in top performance shape. In 2013 he released an album of covers with guitarist Paul Metsa, done in a laid back duo format. He was prime for a major comeback effort.

If Nothing Ever Changes brings Walker into the studio with a solid line up of premier musicians and fresh material to showcase his remarkable ability to deliver songs in the classic retro soul style which has become his trademark. Produced by harmonica man Rick Estrin of The Nightcats fame, this record is another in the small but growing catalog of The Little Village Foundation, a new label specializing in notable acts worthy of further acknowledgment, founded by keyboardist Jim Pugh, who also plays on the record.

It is clear from the opening intro of "Read Between The Lines" that this is a no nonsense production burning like a coal fired freight train. Walker comes out swinging and does not let up. They flawlessly slide into a ballad version of the Beatles "Help!" which also features vocalist Curtis Salgado, before turning it back up on "Everybody Meets Mr. Blue," complete with flashes of horn arrangements from the Otis Redding songbook. Great care and thought was taken behind the song selections which covers perfectly the wide range of expressions that Walker can interpret successfully. He brings it way down with the original "Not That I Care," a gut wrenching reflection on self-denial gone wrong. It's in those slower ballads as "What Love Can Do," and "Nothing Ever Changes," where the true soul singer comes into his own and the pretenders are quickly weeded out, for it takes an innate talent and ability to tell the story with credibility and heart felt emotion. Walker proves he's got what it takes and puts it on the line, and though provided with appropriate material, it's the singer not the song.

Special mention is in order for the impeccable musicians who played on this project, for they captured the legitimate feeling essential for this music. Recorded in Kid Anderson's Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California, noted for its raw and accurate approach in recording techniques, If Nothing Ever Changes shines as a beacon of hope in the survival of genuine soul music. ~James Nadal

The Knickerbocker All Stars are a group of extremely talented blues musicians who have been in the business for decades. Members of the band have played with such notable performers as Freddie King, Robert Cray, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Roomful of Blues as well as their own bands.
Sunday night at the Knickerbocker Café in Westerly, RI featured the Roomful of Blues in the 1970’s and early 80’s. It quickly became the hottest social event in the area. Duke Robillard, the legendary blues guitarist and leader of the Roomful, would invite many up and coming musicians on stage to get their licks in as well as featured artists, the list of which is too long to mention.
Every song on the CD was carefully selected to emulate the great blues front-men, backed by a full horn section with bluesy and boogie woogie piano. Bob Christina was working as the drummer in the blues band Ricky King Russell and the Cadillac Horns. With Bob’s efforts we were able to bring together the Knickerbocker All Stars. The band includes blues heroes, Curtis Saglado, John Nicholas, Sugar Ray Norcia, Malford Milligan, Dave Maxwell, Al Copley and, of course, Bob’s brother Fran.
If you play their songs loud enough and close your eyes you can envision the band blasting away while dancers on the floor twist, swing, jitterbug and slow dance real tight. All of this is what was and still is the hallmark of the Knickerbocker Café.

"American roots music is like a big stew. Blues, Rock and Roll, West Coast Swing, Jazz and even Bluegrass are just some of the spices in the mix. Raoul and his band The Big Time, with help from some friends have cooked up a winning recipe for their new disc “Hollywood Blvd”.

Raoul Bhaneja is the catalyst for this fine music. He and his Toronto band, The Big Time, are among a number of talented Canadian musicians who haven’t had the chance to be heard extensively in the US. Raoul is a singer, harmonica player and talented songwriter, having written eight of the twelve tracks on this disc. He is also a busy actor both on stage and in front of the camera. The Big Time is all about creating original music for today, inspired by the genius of the past. This is their tribute to the music he and his band love — the Chess Blues sound of the 50s and contemporary West Coast Jump Harmonica Blues. He has enlisted some of the best West Coast players including former members of The Hollywood Fats Band, Canned Heat, and The Mighty Flyers, along with most of the current members of Mavis Staples’ band: all musicians Raoul has admired and learned from over the years. It brings an authentic sound to the project.

There are four instrumentals here and each of them adds to the flavor of the album. Two are recorded with Los Angeles-based greats Junior Watson, Fred Kaplan, Richard Innes, and Larry Taylor. “Left Coast Fred” is a West Coast jump swing number and the title track “Hollywood Blvd” sounds as if Slim Harpo and Ramsey Lewis were working together. The third instrumental “Amphetamine” finds Raoul working with Jeff Turmes, Rick Holmstrom and Stephen Hodges, to create a sound that feels like it could have been recorded by Little Walter and The Aces back in the 1950s.

The last instrumental “Curtis Charm” features Curtis Salgado blowing harp with Raoul while The Big Time provide in the pocket backup. There are four covers along with eight original songs. “Get Out Of My Life Woman”, written by Alan Toussaint and done first by Lee Dorsey is performed by Raoul and The Big Time with additional guitar work by Rusty Zinn, another fine California-based guitar player, who has worked with Kim Wilson and Mark Hummel as well as recording his own solo releases.

“Someday” is a Bobby “Blue” Bland tune that features guitarist Franck Goldwasser laying down some very tasty guitar licks. My favorite cover is “Why (Am I Treated So Bad)” done by The Staple Singers in 1967. Here Raoul is backed again by current members of Mavis Staples’ band, a perfect pairing for the tune. Lastly is a cover of a very early Bluegrass tune “In The Shadow Of The Pine” with New Orleans musician Johnny Sansone and fiddler John Showman playing behind Raoul.

Sounding just as strong as the covers, the other four tracks “Nothin’ Gonna Take Me Down”, “High Roller”, “Spoken For” and “Tired” are original songs written by Raoul that exhibit some very clever lyrics. For instance, “High Roller” has the chorus “Fortune’s smiling upside down, I’m a high roller with a frown”.

Grab a bowl and a spoon and have yourself a huge helping of this wonderful musical dish that Raoul and The Big Time have created for us. It’s good to you as well as good for you." ~Blues broadcaster Bill Wax
