The group chose to record Dark Hour in Philadelphia, a city with a rich history of unforgettable music. The album was tracked at Cambridge Sound Studio with Grammy nominated engineer, Jim Salamone (Teddy Pendergrass). For these sessions, the band brought in Bruce Krywinski on trumpet, and drummer Francis Valentino (David Lee Roth Band), to round out the already rich pedigree of musicians. Winding his way through the narrow streets of Philly on the way to the studio, Billy found inspiration in the hard times he witnessed others experiencing. He was moved and wrote songs that reflected these challenges. He wields his guitar with relentless dexterity, leading his talented band on a musical journey that probes the heart of this darkness. The resulting music hits the sweet spot somewhere in the middle of Rock, Soul, Blues and Funk. This album is the culmination of an irresistibly powerful band lighting a fire within the Dark Hour.

From the shores of Jersey to the clubs of Britain, the Billy Walton band have been kicking around for ten years. Billy Walton himself has played with Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, and his band really reflect that soulful rock and blues sound. His guitar playing is second to none and it’s a combination of rock and soul blended together like that of no other, yet it’s done traditionally enough to sound familiar to the masses.

This is a mighty road-tested band and it shows in the live performance on this well-produced video clip. It kicks off with Walton looking dark and mysterious with a black background as he enters the picture in a black suit, strapped with an orange sunburst Les Paul. The lighting effects are great as the horns come in and give it a swampy groove that doesn’t quit, with the horns going onto add just the right flavor to stand apart for ordinary blues-rock. They really do bring the bottom end the track needs to make it taste so different around Walton’s blazing guitar which allowed plenty of room to shine.

It’s not hard to tell within the first few bars how playing with the likes of Southside Johnny, but he makes that style his own, and the band backs him without losing a step. The music sounds like a natural progression from the last album “Wish For What You Want” - produced by Tony Braunagel in 2015. But it’s everything to be expected for any fans looking for the next level of Billy Walton’s chops. It delivers in both the songwriting and playing department by all in involved in this rocking, soulful romp. There’s no holding back in the energy department as the rhythm section and horns spar for the spotlight.

The influence of the New Jersey sound is something you can’t miss from this band, and that doesn’t come without the mention of Bruce Springsteen, but also Count Basie and the rest who forged the sound of that area so long ago. Billy Walton and his band carry on in that same tradition with the live show being the main means of constant work, touring all over the US and the UK. The new album marks a fresh perspective with new tracks for the stage, and the video for “Hell Or Highwater” helps preview what’s to come when they hot the road in support of it.

There is no denying how tight they are, and this is a track to showcase their talents with Walton up front, leading the way with tons of swagger. And when I say it has a swampy sound, just imagine a “Jim Dandy To The Rescue” shuffle, mixed with an epic, sizzling hot, Jeff Healey style guitar solo. And make no mistake, Billy Walton keeps up with the best of ‘em as he takes this track over with a monster prowess, and the rest is gravy, as they say. It comes recommended for all that and more, as even hardcore blues lovers can find much to enjoy about such an honest, top shelf piece of work. ~Mindy McCall

Billy Walton Band - 2 albums: Crank It Up! / Wish For What You Want

There was a time when the Jersey Shore represented the best in American entertainment. Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, the Rat Pack, Dick Clark, Chubby Checker, they all made stops on the Jersey Shore. Tony Mart’s was the club Levon Helm was playing when Dylan called. Of course we all know what happened in Asbury Park. The town, ravaged by riots in the late 60’s, became a melting pot of musical experimentation. Late night jams that ended when the sun came up were the norm. Bruce Springsteen & Southside Johnny were the two acts that made their way to an international stage from these humble beginnings. For decades musicians have come and gone, always hoping to make a living and pursue a dream. Billy Walton is no different. Billy’s proving ground was Long Beach Island. There he was chaperoned from gig to gig by his Mom, two young to drive around and enter the clubs on his own. He always was up for a jam and looking to learn some tricks. For years Billy spent his time sharpening his skills, developing his stage act until he decided to step up to center stage with the Billy Walton Band.

The band has focused its’ effort in Europe. 13 tours since 2007 have established the group in the fertile British Blues Rock scene. In 2010 Billy got the call to join in with one of the masters of the Asbury Park sound, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes. For years Billy toured with the Jukes. Most people don’t know that the creative force behind Southside was none other than Little Steven. A highpoint in Billy’s tenure with the Jukes was when they recorded a live version of Southside’s most acclaimed release, Hearts of Stone, with Little Steven.

Good things have been happening to the Billy Walton Band. The band recently signed to Vizztone Records for the release of Wish For What You Want. Produced by Tony Braunagel, the award winning BMA producer and current Eric Burdon drummer, this batch of songs will certainly take the band to the next level! You can say Bruce Springsteen is a singer songwriter fronting an old-school rock n soul band. Southside Johnny is a soul singer fronting an old-school rock n soul band. Billy Walton is the guitar hero fronting the old-school rock n soul band. The horns are the common thread.
