The dude is complex. He’s a love bandit, Cadillac craver, sidewalk poet, pimp extraordinaire, ex-con, eager entertainer, velvet-wrapped urban legend, and, above all, bluesman. Fillmore Slim is all that. T-Bone, B.B., and compadre Johnny Guitar Watson could vouch for him. Ice-T, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg have name-checked him. Etta James called him her first boyfriend. Others still call him the Godfather of Hip Hop or the West Coast Godfather of the Game. He’s bucked the straight and narrow. He’s lived to transcribe it (the tell-all Blues Man Mack: How I Conquered the Stage and the Streets), but more often sing about it. “You Got the Nerve of a Big Brass Monkey” was Slim’s ballsy world premiere. From that day in 1957 forward, both blues and funk would have their hands full. Still do.

Over the years though, his career changed course and he became the legendary pimp known as Fillmore Slim. He's back with new 2004 album "The Game," offering listeners a view of the urban street Sims knows all too well. “You know me, I'm Fillmore Slim” has been spoken out loud most everywhere in the city of San Francisco. As Clarence “Fillmore Slim” Sims turned 85 years old in the month of November, 2019, this legendary bluesman continues his music and magic.

Born November 7, 1934 in the rich musical heritage city of New Orleans, Louisiana, “Fillmore” has lived a transformation like no one else. Bestowed upon him are some of the most significant monikers that truly intertwine with a very real American history. “Tailbone”, “Guitar Slim”, “Fillmore Slim”, “the O.G.”. His respect and love for music runs through them all.

He grew up on a farm picking cotton and plowing the fields utilizing a mule. As a youngster he discovered music from his grandmother. He moved to the Los Angeles area in 1955, performing with his band Eddie and the Blues Slayers; he relocated to San Francisco opening shows for the likes of BB King and Dinah Washington; his first single released in the late 50's, was a song entitled 'You Got the Nerve of a Brass Monkey' on the Los Angeles based Dooto record label.

This VIP of the music and underworld would go on to be revered by the members of the hip hop world including Snoop Dogg, 50 cent, Big Daddy Kane and MC Lyte. Among other celebrated musicians, he has toured with Joe Tex, Harmonica Slim and Little Willie John, performed with Sly Stone and T-Bone Walker, and recorded with Joe Louis Walker, Bobbie Webb and Rick Estrin. “Fillmore Slim” continues to master his gift of storytelling as singer/guitarist/songwriter.

Mediocre singer but stinging guitarist, Fillmore Slim delivers raw blues with minimum production - sometimes enhanced with funk accents - much more alive and exciting than on "Other Side Of The road". "Funky Mama's House", "Street Walker", "Tabby Thomas' Place", "Down at Eli's" stand out among the highlights. We must not forget the excellent Rhythm & Blues cover of "Those Lonely Lonely Nights".

Fillmore Slim has been playing the blues all his life and has become synonymous with the "playa" lifestyle. He is one of the special lights of the blues world today combining humor, slang, street wisdom, blues idioms and solid songwriting into his special motif. The Legend Of was recorded in Oakland and it brings all the power of Slim's writing and spoken magic to the front. The song "Hey Little Brother" examines the inner city youth/handgun epidemic from many different viewpoints. The combination of rap and blues is once again explored by Fillmore and his son Frank Sticks. /Amazon

08. Other Sideide Of The Road (6:30)
09. Louisiana Scat (4:47)
10. Blue Monday (4:08)

Fillmore Slim could get over with blues fans anywhere. On Other Side of the Road the guitarist boasts one of the raunchiest tones since Johnny Guitar Watson and he sings with the rough-hewn authority of a sanctified preacher. An itinerant bluesman-born and raised in New Orleans, relocated to San Francisco in the mid-’50s, did a five-year stretch in a federal penitentiary in Texas-he’s worked under a variety of names, including Tailbone Slim, Clarence “Guitar” Sims and Fillmore Sims. He performs with passion and fire on insightful originals like “Call 911,” “Kicked Out,” “The Girl Can’t Cook” and the raucous, shuffling “Pretty Baby.” His New Orleans roots come out on the jazzy shuffle “Louisiana Scat” and a funky rendition of the Dave Bartholomew classic “Blue Monday,” a hit in the ’50s for Fats Domino. A welcome return to the scene by the wily blues veteran. ~Bill Milkowski

Get that money! Gimme that money! Fillmore Slim demands over a James Brown-like groove on "Hooker's Game," one of twenty tracks on his new double-disc release. He set the hustle aside years ago but continues to revel in his "Pope of Pimps" title, the respect he gets from rappers like Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, and Too $hort, and the trophies he collects as a guest of honor at players' balls around the country.

Fillmore, now 76, has focused on music since being released from prison 25 years ago. He reminisces about his former career on The Blues Playa's Ball to a greater extent than he had on any of his previous albums, but the discs also contain plenty of first-rate blues on other subjects. Although he's a capable guitarist himself, he leaves all the picking to Joe Louis Walker and Frank Goldwasser. Harmonica blower Rick Estrin takes the vocal lead on one number, Walker on another; Fillmore handles the rest.

His tenor voice may be rather nasal and his drawled enunciation at times a bit difficult to decipher, but he delivers his original odes with conviction.

His portraits of inner-city poverty and crime are brutally frank, yet he also has a tender side and dedicates a heartfelt reading of "I'd Rather Go Blind" to one-time girlfriend Etta James. ~Review by Lee Hildebrand

"The game is to be sold, not told... but I'm gonna give you a free course in it!" So begins the vocalization by the master of the blues game Fillmore Slim. His new CD, The Game, finds Sims in the company of the Bay Area's hottest musicians, splitting the difference between low down blues and gritty funk and singing about the player life with a degree of verisimilitude today's rapper's can only dream of. This band is on cross-genre fire. ~Tom Hyslop
