The Radio Kings are a Blues and Americana band based in Boston, MA and fronted by singer and harp player Brian Templeton and guitarist Michael Dinallo. After hearing The Radio Kings in 1991, just 4 months after their founding, Jerry Portnoy, who played for years with Muddy Waters, said, "This is the best new blues band I've seen since the Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1975, when the T-Birds and Stevie Ray Vaughan opened for Muddy." The group debuted in 1994 with It Ain't Easy, which was called a "showcase for their clear affection for the gritty sound of giants including Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Slim Harpo. In their 1990s heyday, the Radio Kings toured relentlessly both in the United States and Europe and put out two more well-received albums. In Europe, the Netherlands in particular, they became bona fide stars, being invited to major festivals and selling bushels of records. Then the Kings started suffering burnout. Constant touring and the struggle to keep a band together - the group went through a revolving door of 17 drummers and bass players - proved exhausting. The band broke up in 1999. Following an ten-year year hiatus, The Radio Kings re-formed and released a fourth album, "The Radio Kings," in 2009. Reviewers said the album is "more Americana and less rockin’ blues.

Today, blues and R&B music are no longer the preserve of working class African Americans and, although the city of Memphis itself has changed, the influence of its legendary performers can be heard in the recordings on this cd. The selections here, taken from the current generation of blues and R&B artists, represent the best of the new era of Memphis Music.

Although they are continuing the traditions of artists such as B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson, these artists sing new songs with new voices; however, the intertwined threads of anguish and joy, agony and celebration are still present, as they in the primitive blues that W.C. If the Radio Kings sound more than a little bit like the Fabulous Thunderbirds, it's more than just the similar instrumentation. T-Bird drummer Fran Christina's brother Bob is the drummer in this band, and singer/harmonica man Brian Templeton sounds so much like Kim Wilson, both vocally and instrumentally, that you have to keep checking the personnel credits in the CD booklet. The final nail in the coffin is Michael Dinallo's expert Jimmie Vaughan imitations on guitar, however unintentional. That said, they nonetheless turn in a disc full of original material that would probably be more impressive if there was an equally original approach applied in presenting it. High spots of the material include "Money In My Pocket", "Virginia", the Lazy Lester soundalike "Disturb Me Baby", "Song of Love" and the title track. /Cub Koda, AllMusic
