11. Country Girl (6:55)
12. It's A Little Too Late (5:48)
13. The Big Prayer (5:15)

This release, Grand Union, is Grand’s first album since signing with the new Blues label. Recorded in Boston, USA. It is produced by Otis, who is also renowned for his High-value production work on Blues recordings. In Grand Union, Otis Grand has created a powerful guitar recording by inviting his long time friends Anson Funderburgh and Debbie Davies to participate in a TRIOLOGY style CD concept. The album also features the finest musicians from the USA, and includes special guests Sugar Ray Norcia, Tony Coleman and the BB King Horn section, and rare appearance by legendary R&B star Ike Turner on 2 tunes.

Grand Union reflects Otis Grand’s new approach to his latest recording in that he did not want this to be just another Otis Grand release (9 CD’s to date). Since he was invited to participate on the highly acclaimed "Great Guitars" recording by Joe Louis Walker, Otis has been consumed by expanding the project to a totally live guitar recording with his partners in the studio playing together at the same time . "All our playing is first take. It’s got that spontaneous feeling of the moment that is really the magic of playing the blues."

It was planned well in advance. Otis grand began calling musicians and assembling a common ground of songs that all guitarists felt comfortable with. These songs combine a dynamic mixture of Blues, southern soul, rocking R&B and big band influences. Whether Otis is bending, Anson is caressing or Debbie is burning every note from their guitars, the result is an innovative and fresh addition to blues. Grand / Funderburgh / Davies are so good on this release it’s scary, making this another veritable blues guitar ‘ear-gasm’ that will please all audiences across the musical divides.

Tab Benoit, Debbie Davies, Kenny Neal - Homesick For The Road

10. Night Life (3:58)
11. Still Called The Blues (4:34)
12. Homesick For The Road (3:41)

Homesick for the Road provides a showcase for three fine blues singer/guitarists. The recording is clean and crisp, as is typical of the Telarc label, and the music cooks from start to finish. This disc provides an excellent introduction to each performer, with ample opportunities for each to shine.

Debbie Davies brings to mind Bonnie Raitt, with her appealing vocal timbre and bluesy delivery. The youthful Benoit sings with an authority beyond his 31 years, making Screamin' Jay Hawkins' classic "I Put a Spell on You" his own. Kenny Neal has the scruffy, soulful delivery of a man who knows what the blues are all about. His "I've Been Mistreated" sounds like a late '60s slice of Muscle Shoals soul.

All three of the co-leaders are excellent guitarists, and the band is solid and tight. Homesick for the Road rolls down the car window for an enticing look at three relatively young performers carrying the blues torch into the future. /Jim Newsom, AllMusic

[ 3:34] 10. This Time I Know (Feat. Theodis Ealey)
[ 6:39] 11. All I Found (Feat Debbie Davies)
[ 6:43] 12. Serves Me Right To Suffer

A direct descendant from the traveling bundled artist packages of the '60s right down to its retro "hatch show"-styled cover art, Tommy Castro and his band play host to a relatively diverse assortment of high-energy blues and soul acts. The concept originated on the yearly Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise where such musical collaborations are typical. Castro's concept was to take that concept on the road, resulting in this dozen-track live album cherrypicked from various tour stops. It's a rollicking, very plugged-in affair, perhaps not surprisingly geared toward some of Castro's current crop of Alligator labelmates such as Janiva Magness, guitarist Michael Burks, and ex-Little Charlie & the Nightcats frontman-gone-solo Rick Estrin. Still, a handful of non-Alligator names like Debbie Davies, Joe Louis Walker, and "Sista" Monica Parker also appear. The varied collective features youngsters Trampled Underfoot as well as lesser-known veteran Theodis Ealey, both of whom handily hold their own next to the more popular participants. Castro takes lead vocals on four tracks, and he, along with his horn-enhanced band, provide backup for the majority of the other artists. Everyone is at the top of their game with an electricity and vein-popping excitement that can only be generated when musicians feed off each other live. Castro in particular seems to relish his master of ceremonies role, charging through a soulful version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" and a sizzling "Serves Me Right to Suffer." The latter suddenly shifts tempos from a cracking slow blues to a driving "Radar Love" boogie beat and displays his sometimes underappreciated guitar skills. Most impressive, and rather unexpected, is the number of females in the lineup, a refreshing change from the typically male-dominated blues field. Not only do guitarist Davies and vocalist Magness turn in some thrilling performances (Magness on a tough, horn-punched, swampily rearranged version of James Brown's "Think"), but Monica Parker's slow blues boils, and Trampled Underfoot's bass-playing lead singer Danielle Schnebelen's sexy/angry vocals will have you checking the liner notes to see who this newcomer is. Estrin adds both humor and harp to the generally guitar-oriented lineup with "My Next Ex-Wife," and Michael Burks' ten-minute grinding blues "Voodoo Spell" will make an instant believer of anyone who might not be familiar with his slashing guitar attack. The disc moves from one highlight to the next with the primary detriment being that it's not a double CD to provide more of what's here. Perhaps volume two is in order. ~Hal Horowitz

Alastair Greene is a man on a mission these days. He wants to bring his unique blend of rock and blues to fans old and new, worldwide. Greene spent seven years with Alan Parsons contributing his vocal and guitar coloring to that incredibly unique and inviting sound, known to millions. Recently, he has played the Chicago Blues Festival as well as the Big Blues Bender, and he is no stranger to performing with top-tier talent including Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Walter Trout, and so many more.

Greene has decided to forge a new path and has ventured out on his own. Dream Train is his invitation to folks to come and celebrate his music. The album features 13 tracks and hits the street on Rip Cat Records on October 20th. Personnel is Alastair Greene on guitar and vocals, Jim Rankin on bass, and Austin Beede on drums. Several guests lend their talent here as well including Walter Trout, Debbie Davies, Mike Zito, Mike Finnigan, and Dennis Grueling.

Dream Train runs about 55 minutes, and the 13 tracks cover a wide gamut of material. We enjoyed the title track, which is reminiscent of our favorite ’70s highway-rolling rock. “Nome Zayne” is a Billy Gibbons ditty performed here with a whole lot of spunk, and it sounds fabulously chunky! Walter Trout lends a hand on “Another Lie, ” and this cut scratches that blues itch that lives deep down inside all of us. If you enjoy rockin’ blues that tips a hat to the ’70s even as it lives firmly in the present, then Dream Train is for you. Don’t miss this train; you’ll be glad you climbed aboard.

You can't ignore the sexy packaging that graces the cover of this budget compilation of Blind Pig blues artists. Evidently it must be difficult to grab the attention of blues fans without this type of eye-catching gimmick. Well, as far as the music goes, If This Is Love...I'd Rather Have the Blues contains 13 decent previously released tracks from Blind Pig Records with a heartbreak, romance, and don't-get-caught theme including LLoyd Jones, Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers, Debbie Davis, Studebaker John & the Hawks, Renee Austin, John Mooney, Big Bill Morganfield, and Chris Cain. Year: 2007

8. Where The Blues Come To Die (Feat. Coco Montoya) (5:06)
9. Sonoma Sunset (Feat. Coco Montoya, Charlie Musselwhite, Tab Benoit) (10:01)

Any blues fan dedicated to live music will testify that when musicians play with their peers, the energy rises a few notches. That's the concept behind this meeting of the minds hosted by guitarist Debbie Davies. Fellow string-benders Tab Benoit and Coco Montoya (both have worked with her previously) join harmonica veteran Charlie Musselwhite and let the resulting fireworks naturally explode. Typically, these projects wind up being overdubbed affairs, a process that dilutes and often negates the concept. But except for a few instances, largely with Benoit, Davies and her musical friends assembled in the studio, resulting in the titular explosion.

Both Montoya and Davies apprenticed under Albert Collins, and the opening "A.C. Strut" captures the Texas blues legend's loose shuffle style as the guitarists trade sizzling licks. Montoya and Musselwhite join for "Sittin' and Cryin'," a finger-snapping Davies original where the harpist tears into a limber and authentic Little Walter-styled solo topped only by the next track, his own "Movin' & Groovin'," to which he also contributes lead vocals. Davies turns the microphone over to Benoit on John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake," moving the proceedings down to the muggy Louisiana swamps. But when the participants join on "Like You Was Gone," the summit cooks. The closing 10-minute romp on a slow, minor-key instrumental "Sonoma Sunset" again finds the foursome swapping licks as the temperature progressively intensifies and the resulting jam shoots through the roof. /Hal Horowitz, Amazon

Davies' third album finds this artist moving in a much more "pop" direction, proving that she can both stretch her wings artistically and has far more to offer than merely recycled riffs and motifs filtered through a women's perspective. Her social consciousness raising quickly comes up for air on the opening track, "Howlin' At The Moon," one of only three Davies originals aboard this outing. But her interpretations of gospel pop ballad material like Lenny McDaniel's beautiful "Tired Angels," and duets with Coco Montoya on Albert Collins' title track and Tab Benoit on "Let The Heartaches Begin" are every bit as strong, her vocal skills showing more maturity and assuredness with each album. Her solo work is spot on, always paying homage to a wide variety of stylistic lessons well learned and solidly in the blues pocket with no added rock affectations to bog it down. But tracks like "Homework" (not the Otis Rush classic) make it clear that this is Debbie Davies being mainstreamed into Bonnie Raitt territory and she doesn't sound uncomfortable there at all, making this a most ambitious effort. ~Cub Koda

In this collection of 11 all original tunes, Davies explores some age old questions about knowing when to hang on to a good thing or when to let go and move on. Special guests on this album include two sax players; Blues Music Award Winner and West Coast blues legend, Terry Hanck, and Dana Robbins who currently plays sax on tour in Delbert McClinton’s Band. Terry also joins Debbie in a vocal duet. Dave Keyes adds some sparkling piano to the mix, and blues-soul-rocker Jay Stollman joins Davies in an R’n B duet. As always, Davies is true to her blues roots without being an imitator, and honest to the many musical influence that have surrounded her since her youth."

Debbie Davies' fourth album, 1998's Round Every Corner, displays her bluesy singing, writing, and playing talents on 11 songs, including originals by Davies, some traditional songs, and covers. Davies' own songs range from the romantic "Such a Fine Man" to the upbeat "A.C. Strut," and she performs accomplished versions of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Who'll Stop the Rain" and the traditional "Blue and Lonesome." Davies' skillful, soulful take on the blues grows richer with time. ~Heather Phares

When they fold up their billowing mushroom tent for the final time, 2014 will have been a full-on Allman Brothers year given the variety of concert celebrations, albums, DVDs, and books that flowed copiously throughout it. No other legacy institution continued for so long to not only be relevant, but visionary. Thus, paying tribute to The Allman Brothers Band proves difficult because it’s impossible to live up to the spirit of their performances, and tough to put a unique spin on their songs. At the helm here is John Wesley, a Florida guitarist with some heady friends and fast connections. But the album’s definitely disjointed. Cuts by Pat Travers, Leon Russell with Ronnie Earl, the Oak Ridge Boys with Tinsley Ellis, and others just don’t cut the mustard or flow together overall.

There are several captivating moments, to varying degrees. Molly Hatchet’s treatment of “Melissa” toughens the ode, and a precise version of “Whipping Post” benefits considerably from old friends Jimmy Hall and Steve Morse, singing, and ripping on guitar respectively. Robben Ford takes a run at Elmore James’s “One Way Out” at the same pace the Allman’s made a hit out of it with over forty years ago. His sweet guitar and peerless California soul polish the old blues into a brand new luster. But the brightest spots during these Midnight Rider sessions arrive with Roy Rogers’ treatment of “Jessica,” and Sonny Landreth and Commander Cody’s romp on “Southbound.” Both slide guitar masters offer a uniquely perfect balance of reverence, individuality, and heart. ~Tom Clarke
