Her powerful voice and her exceptional, sometimes raunchy stage presence, her professionalism and her determination have earned Sandra Hall the nickname of “the Empress of the blues". A native of Atlanta, Sandra Hall grew up nearby in a small town where her grandfather was a pastor. Along with her sister Barbara, she began singing gospel at the age of four, with their grandmother at the piano while their mother was on tour, also singing gospel. Eight years later, the two sisters set up the Soul Sisters and began to sing in clubs. From 1965, Sandra Hall was a singer and dancer in the Exotics, a female group that occasionally opened for artists whose tour passed through Atlanta. This allowed her to rub shoulders with big names in soul and blues, such as B.B. King, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley and Etta James.

After about ten years, her career takes on another dimension and it is now under her name that she sings, tours and records. However, she could not always lead a full-time musical career and was sometimes required to work as a nurse, dancer or stripper. She also makes the choice to take the time to raise her daughter. Despite these intermittences, her career is rich in numerous American but also European tours (Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, France). She has shared the stage with legendary artists such as James Brown, B.B. King, Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, Bo Diddley, The Temptations, The O'Jays, Etta James, Mavis Staples and Jimi Hendrix.

Sandra Hall recorded the excellent “Showin' Off” (1995) and “One Drop Will Do You” (1997) for Ichiban Records, a major label based in Atlanta. “American Roots: Blues” (Ichiban, 2002) compiles tracks from these albums while “Miss Red Riding Hood” is self-produced from 2001. In the summer 2003, Sandra Hall met with members of Gnola Blues Band starting an intense collaboration that continues today with a series of concerts to major festivals in Italy and Europe. It also resulted in the the release of the album "Red Bone Woman" (2007), eleven tracks of which nine are signed by Roger Mugnaini and Maurizio "Gnola" Glielmo.

Personnel: Sandra Hall (vocals); Maurizio "Gnola" Glielmo (guitar, background vocals); Roger Mugnaini (piano, Hammond organ, background vocals); Tix Cimaschi (bass); Max Bertagna (drums); Max Negri (saxophone); Lilian Stoimenov (trumpet); Sugar Blue (harmonica tracks 1 & 9).

Gnola Blues Band - 2 albums: Walkin' Through The Shadows Of The Blues / 20 Years On The Road

Maurizio Glielmo leader and founder, the Band’s guitar and voice, comes from a long-lasting prestigious past on the Italian Blues scene. For years Glielmo toured alongside the legendary Fabio Treves in the most important Italian and International festivals. He participated in the recording of two albums:“Treves 3” in 1985 and “Sunday’s blues” in 1988 along with known artists such as Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Almann Brothers, Eric Clapton, and others), Dave Kelly (Blues Band) British Blues hero, Pick Withers (Dire Straits drummer). Maurizio Glielmo creates “Gnola Blues Band”, officially born in 1989, with the initial aim of covering the most classic blues itineraries. The band starts with standard interpretations (Elmore James, Muddy Waters) then moves towards the fusion of elements of tradition with interesting original compositions. GBB is sustained by the pulsating heart of the pair Bertagna/Pavin, drum and bass respectively: a granitic rhythmic section underlying the space and light of the soloists with a special attention to the dynamics. Roger Mugnaini offers an irreplaceable piano contribution, which elegantly accompanies Glielmo or proposes both piano and organ personal ‘solos’. The live activity soon becomes frantic, the musical credibility solid thanks to the Band’s participation in various festivals which include International artists, as well as their first record production “First Step” in 1991 which receives flattering reviews from critics (Il Blues, Buscadero, Fare Musica, Mucchio Selvaggio, ecc) and their second studio album “Walking through the shadows of the blues” which wins a prize as best Jazz&Blues record of the year 2000. The prize is handed by Ernesto de Pascale (Rai 2) at the Blues festival in Bordighera.

After a half-dozen discs, and an intense and varied activity live, a career anthology collected by 20 Years on the Road, the Magna with Blues Band was swept by a wave of news and starts again, with renewed enthusiasm and a belief, just Down The Line. The new disc, born first of all by the recent transformation of Magna with Blues Band: around Maurizio "Cog" are also cooperating, guitarist, singer and founder and historical keyboardist Roger Mugnaini has consolidated two eclectic and fine musicians Paolo Legramandi on bass and vocals and factotum Caesar "Big C" Nolli that starting from battery, multiply on a wide variety of tools. With this training, and often simply as a duo with Cesare Nolli, Maurizio "Magna with" Cog began to experiment directly on the road, many of the most curious and intense solutions that emphasize the log change Down The Line ...

... If the roots blues and rock'n ' roll remain intact, as it could not be otherwise, Down The Line marks a turning point in the sound and remarkable interpretations of Magna with Blues Band: the production curated by Paolo Legramandi and Cesare Nolli chooses a different step out from the canons of traditional blues, leaving ample room for fine guitars by Cog, but at the same time gaining particular attention to songs. Eleven original songs, some written by Cesare Nolli and a good half written in collaboration with Edward Abbiati, leader of the Lowlands and protagonist of many record projects ranging without hesitation in tracking emotional landscapes and very intense, real up to memories of a London and teeming with searing music, that of the late 1970s, evoked in The Ghosts Of King Street. The only exception is the Ventilator Blues version of the Rolling Stones also played with Chuck Leavell, a pianist extraordinaire who always plays live with the Stones, but that in the curriculum boasts a myriad of collaborations, not least with the Allman Brothers Band. Chuck Leavell performs also in Room Enough, adding a touch of class in further Down The Line. ~automatic translation.
