Alexis Korner was a British blues musician and radio broadcaster. He had travelled with his parents through Switzerland and North Africa before settling in London as a 12 year-old. He grew up listening to the early blues pioneers and his music career as a guitarist and singer really began with engagements in Ken Colyer and Chris Barber bands. In 1956, Korner met Cyril Davies with whom he founded the famed blues club in Ealing and the band Blues Incorporated. Their aim was to play 'real' and uncompromising blues (probably the first 'electric British blues' bands) becoming a platform for the careers of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Jack Bruce, Charlie Watts, and many others.

Davis left in 1963 and Blues Incorporated disbanded in 1967. The following years saw Korner in many bands, most of them short-lived: Free At Last, New Church and Snape. From the late 1960s Korner toured, often as duo - for instance with Peter Thorup, but mostly with bassist Colin Hodgkinson. By the late 1970s, Korner gained recognition as a radio DJ and broadcaster, continuing to record sporadically with bands such as CCS and Snape. His 50th birthday all-star concert was released as The Party Album. In 1981, he joined the "supergroup" Rocket 88, led by Ian Stewart and based on boogie-woogie keyboard players, which featured a rhythm section comprising Jack Bruce and Charlie Watts, among others, as well as a horn section. Korner died from lung cancer in 1984.

An album released on the Red Lightnin' label in 1972 consisting of one side of Big Walter Horton and the other side with very early Paul Butterfield (1963). The Horton side consists of eight tracks of Horton with guitarist Robert Nighthawk (no bass or drums). Nighthawk is playing pure backup here, very little else. It is not clear when these were recorded. Perhaps not classic Walter, but any Big Walter is worth a listen. There are three instrumentals that make for good listening, including a version of "Easy" (not up to the original Walter recording). The instrumental "West Side Blues" has some interesting Walter harp licks that I have not heard elsewhere. The other five cuts are Walter singing. Of these, there is a great version of "Louise" and Walter singing "Tin Pan Alley" which never fails to raise the hair on the back of my neck. If you can find this album, it is good to have.

The Butterfield side contains six tracks with Butterfield, Smokey Smothers on guitar, Jerome Arnold on bass, and Sam Lay on drums. This was recorded at Big Johns, the North side Chicago club where the Butterfield Band first played in 1963 - some two years before the material on the first Paul Butterfield Blues Band album, which was released in 1965. The six tracks include two instrumentals, "Got My Mojo Working" and the Butterfield-authored tune "Loaded." Although this is very early Butterfield, the harp playing is excellent and already in his own unique style. The singing is a little rough and heavy sounding. Butterfield fans will want to find this rare vinyl for musical and historical reasons. /Michael Erlewine, AllMusic

Note: This CD reissue has six additional tracks by Walter Horton compared to the original LP release. Tracks 1-8 and 15-20 taken from the original LP "An Offer You Can't Refuse" (1972), tracks 9-14 taken from the CD "Live At The El Mocambo" (1991).

Duke Tumatoe & The All-Star Frogs - Red Pepper Hot!

Chicago-born Duke Tumatoe is a musician/showman who has retained a firm career by fusing gritty R&B, rock, blues, and funk injected with equal parts humor and gut-level sincerity. Tumatoe was a founding member of what would become REO Speedwagon. His tenure with that band was short-lived, leaving in 1969 and forming Duke Tumatoe & the All-Star Frogs. For the next 13 years, they toured relentlessly playing throughout the Midwest on countless college campuses and bars. Because of this grueling tour schedule, the band managed to release two albums, Red Pepper Hot! (1976) and Back to Chicago (1982).

In 1983, Tumatoe decided to slow down the pace and break up the Frogs. He immediately rebounded with the creation of the Power Trio, who recorded Duke's Up for Blind Pig Records. Tumatoe took advantage of the more flexible schedule and formed his own record label, Sweetfinger Music. Over the next several years, Tumatoe released four discs on his label, Dr. Duke (1992), Wild Animals (1994), Greatest Hits Plus (1996), and the all-instrumental Picks & Sticks (1997). Throughout his illustrious career, Tumatoe opened for several legendary figures in blues and rock, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, George Thorogood, Fabulous Thunderbirds, and John Fogerty. Fogerty was so taken with Tumatoe's performance, he produced the critically acclaimed 1988 live album I Like My Job! on Warner Bros.

In 1999, Tumatoe signed with the J-Bird label, which released A Ejukatid Man that same year. In 2001, Tumatoe had tongue firmly in cheek with the releases Pompous & Overrated and the raunchy seasonal disc It's Christmas (Let's Have Sex). Duke Tumatoe & the Power Trio appeared from Sweetfinger Records in 2003, followed by 2006's You've Got the Problem! on Blind Pig Records. /Biography by Al Campbell, AllMusic

Omar Dykes tears it up big-time on this marvelous live outing. Pulling tunes largely from his then-current Hard Times in the Land of Plenty album, Dykes and his band deliver the goods with loads of panache and attitude for a hometown crowd hanging on every note. Dykes' voice is poised somewhere between Howlin' Wolf and Bob Seger, while his guitar style is a Texas version of John Fogerty's work with Creedence, but the sound he produces out of all this is totally unique. The disc is loaded with solid Dykes originals like "Mississippi Hoo Doo Man," "Same Old Grind," "Hard Times in the Land of Plenty," and a wild encore performance of Jerry McCain's "Rock'n'Roll Ball." One great little package. ~Cub Koda

RAY BEADLE’s guitar and vocal styles evoke numerous blues legends, whilst concocting a breathtaking style all of his own. It is not by chance that Ray has become a favourite amongst Australian blues and music fans. An exhilarating guitarist, an enthralling singer-songwriter, and an extremely talented performer.

Ray Beadle is the genuine article, his music comes deep from the heart and soul, stirring emotions in people with his guitar genius. Ray’s music is rich with a deep history of the Blues; Rich from over 30 years of experiences garnered from performing Nationally and Internationally; and rich from a deep understanding of his instrument and how to make it stir something within the listener. He knows that’s what the Blues is about. Ray’s life as a musician started when he was just 9, and for the next 30+ years, Ray has played with and learnt from the best, including many years spent performing and recording with the Foreday Riders; (commonly referred to as the ‘University of the Blues’).

Ray has shared the stage with many great Australian and International artists and has thrilled countless festival audiences. A three month residency with the house band in BB King’s Club in Memphis, as well as several Southern Blues festivals, were all defining moments during Ray’s three tours to the USA.

Following his return from Memphis USA where he placed top 8 in the prestigious International Blues Challenge, Ray Beadle released his first album in 7 years in the form of The 301 Live Session. Featuring Ray Beadle on guitar & vocals, Jonathan Zwartz on double bass and Andrew Dickeson on snare & brushes, The 301 Live Session saw the trio hit Studios 301 in March 2020 to record the 9-track album. The result is a slick collection of selected Beadle originals and legendary blues numbers (covering the likes of Robert Johnson, J.B. Lenoir, Louis Jordan, L.J. Welch, Joseph Perkins Greene, Muddy Waters and J. Smith).

Ray’s next album saw him pushing the boundaries leaning more towards Jazz with the release of Twisted Blues with Clayton Doley and Andrew Dickeson (The Guitar, Organ, Drums Trio) one of best collaborations the world has seen since Wes Montomery, Jimmy Smith and Grady Tate got together in the 60's to change the shape of Jazz as we know it, pushing it to a new level, modernising it and putting their own unique blues stamp on it!

With the downturn of live shows in 2021, Ray took to the studio, a basement at his managers house to record some solo tracks with his Tasman acoustic guitar, thinking what it would have been like to see the Delta bluesmen in their prime in some juke joint down in Mississippi. Inspired by the idea, the power the blues can have in it’s simplest form “voice and guitar” delta style. The result is a 4 track EP, Death Bed Blues available 12 November 2021

As a warm up to Thredbo Blues Festival 2020, Ray hit the stage at The Brass Monkey on Friday 17th January with his big band, The Hi Tones (Clayton Doley: Keys, James Hauptmann: Drums, Victor Rounds: Bass, Matt Keagan: Sax, Jack Purdon: Trumpet & Mike Raper – Trombone) and we hit the record button, the result, a true classic live album.

In Winston-Salem, N.C., guitarist Sam Moss is a legend. A superior, highly versatile musician whose advocacy for the blues and mastery of the nuances of electric blues-based soloing somewhat paralleled Mike Bloomfield's in Chicago, Moss was an inspiring, charismatic mentor to generations of North Carolina rockers, including Let's Active and The dB's. He was a larger-than-life character whose club appearances astounded local audiences, yet he never released a record in his lifetime. So, producer Chris Stamey was thrilled to discover, in 2020, on the end of an old tape, forgotten masters of Blues Approved, a spectacular Stax- and Muscle Shoals-influenced solo record, made with Mitch Easter in 1977. This 'great lost' record reveals that Moss was also a soulful songwriter and singer. It has now been carefully remixed and produced for release, with a deluxe booklet featuring detailed liner notes and bio, session notes by Easter, and lots of vivid color photos. Peter Holsapple (The dB's) says, 'Sam Moss was an inspiration to so many of us; with the release of Blues Approved, people everywhere will understand why.'

Blues-rock duo extraordinaire The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer have announced the release of their new single “Pretty Please” from their highly anticipated upcoming album Live At The King Eddy (which is set for release January 28, 2022, with an hour-long documentary to accompany the launch).

Recorded on The Rolling Stones mobile studio – Now a marquee component of the Cantos Music Collection at the National Music Centre in Calgary, between 1970 and 1990 the studio was used to record a breathtaking array of classic masterpieces, including four Led Zeppelin albums, three by Deep Purple, two by Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac, The Who (Who’s Next), Bob Marley & the Wailers (Live!), Santana, Dire Straits, Ten Years After, Iron Maiden, and many more, as well as Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street by the Stones themselves. With Live At The King Eddy Shawn and Matt now join that dizzying, legendary company as the first-ever Canadian band to be recorded.

Carefully assembled from the most powerful performances of a three-night residency at Calgary’s historically iconic blues mecca, the King Edward Hotel, between February 15th and 17th, 2019, Live At The King Eddy arrives as the latest instalment of an already storied career that has to date produced six stunning studio releases. Following the independently released, raw folk and country-blues excursions of 2007’s The Blues Can Kill and the following year’s eponymous album, vocalist and harmonicist Shawn Hall – the Harpoonist – and guitarist Matt Rogers – the Axe Murderer – truly hit their stride and found their sound on 2012’s Checkered Past. This self-released record established a contemporary blues identity entirely their own, leading one fan to sanctify the duo as a 21st-century version of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee.

Featuring powerful contributions from Vancouver soul powerhouse Dawn Pemberton, Winnipeg-based musician Andrina Turenne, and keyboardist Geoff Hilhorst (The Deep Dark Woods / The Satellite & the Harpoonist), Live At The King Eddy was mixed by Graham Lessard (Timber Timbre / Kevin Drew / The Barr Brothers) at the National Music Centre. At this juncture of The Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer’s journey, regardless of their enforced absence from the road a live album is a logical release.

Live At The King Eddy closes a 15-year chapter, paving the way for…well, as Shawn ardently hollers on “Get Ready”… who knows what. Whatever may lay ahead for him and Matt musically, it’s certain to deliver good vibes, rock, groove, and soul in abundance.

Over the course of their decades-long existence, Roomful of Blues effectively became a franchise unto themselves, establishing a sound that endured despite nearly constant changes in their lineup. More than 45 musicians have been part of Roomful of Blues since their formation in the late '60s, and a number went on to notable careers of their own, including guitarists Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, organist Ron Levy, pianist Al Copley, singer Lou Ann Barton, vocalist/harmonica player Sugar Ray Norcia, and drummer Fran Christina (later of the Fabulous Thunderbirds). While Roomful of Blues started out playing blues with a strong rock influence, they evolved into modern purveyors of jump blues, featuring a mighty horn section (who often moonlighted from the band by artists impressed with their sound) along with guitars, bass, keys, drums, and powerful vocals. Their self-titled 1977 debut, co-produced by legendary songwriter Doc Pomus, showed the band knew their blues history but didn't let it stop them from having a good time, and subsequent efforts like 1981's Hot Little Mama, 1994's Dance All Night, 2001's Watch You When You Go, and 2005's Standing Room Only all testified to their easy balance of chops and showmanship. The band also has a stellar reputation as a concert act, and 2013's 45 Live demonstrated that nearly a half century on, they've never lost their ability to work a crowd.

A nine-piece outfit for the majority of their existence, Roomful of Blues were founded in Westerly, RI, all the way back in 1967, by guitarist Duke Robillard and pianist Al Copley. Settling on drummer Fran Christina and bassist Larry Peduzzi, the group began playing around the local club and coffeehouse circuit, initially pursuing a contemporary blues-rock style. Robillard quickly rethought their direction when he discovered jump blues, and in 1970 he added a horn section featuring saxophonists Greg Piccolo (tenor) and Rich Lataille (alto/tenor), plus a more swinging drummer in John Rossi; baritone saxophonist Doug James joined up in 1971. After a couple of years honing their sound and achieving local popularity, Roomful of Blues started supporting established blues artists, and started what would become a 15-year residency at the Knickerbocker Cafe in Westerly. In 1974, they gigged with Count Basie, a professed admirer, and after a few more years of live work, songwriter Doc Pomus finally helped the band get a record deal with Island. Their self-titled debut was released in 1977, and they followed it up with 1979's Let's Have a Party for Antilles. Robillard subsequently left the group to pursue other projects, eventually finding considerable success as a solo artist.

Robillard's spot as guitarist and bandleader was taken by Ronnie Earl, and trombonist Porky Cohen was also added to flesh out the horn section. Meanwhile, female vocalist Lou Ann Barton spent a year with the group, and saxophonist Piccolo subsequently took over, making his vocal debut on 1981's Hot Little Mama (recorded for Blue Flame); the same year, trumpeter Bob Enos joined the group, as did bassist Jimmy Wimpfheimer (who was replaced by Preston Hubbard in 1983). Roomful of Blues' reputation had been growing steadily in the blues world, and they soon attracted more mainstream notice by serving as a studio backing group for legends like Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson (1982's Eddie Cleanhead Vinson & Roomful of Blues), Big Joe Turner (1983's Blues Train), and Earl King (1988's Glazed); all three albums in question earned Grammy nominations. Roomful of Blues hit the studios on their own as well, signing with Varrick and recording 1984's Dressed Up to Get Messed Up. Helped by good timing, the record raised the group's profile even further following the emergence of Stevie Ray Vaughan and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and they were able to tour heavily behind it. Unfortunately, Piccolo needed throat surgery, and at first Keith Dunn filled his spot in concert; vocalist/harpist Curtis Salgado was brought in as a longer-term replacement, and fronted the group on 1987's Live at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel; new organist Ron Levy also made his debut there, replacing Copley.

Unfortunately, Ronnie Earl left the group later that year, and while Roomful of Blues remained a popular touring attraction, it would be seven years before they would pull together and reenter the recording studio (at least, on their own; they did back Pat Benatar on 1991's True Love). Predictably, several personnel shifts ensued: Salgado left when Piccolo's voice healed; trombonist Cohen was replaced by Carl Querfurth in 1988 (later serving as the group's producer as well); guitarist Chris Vachon joined in 1990; and new pianist Matt McCabe came on board in 1992. With a trail of busted record deals behind them, Roomful of Blues eventually bankrolled their own sessions and found a home for the result, Dance All Night, on Bullseye Blues in 1994. With Piccolo now departed, Ronnie Earl's longtime friend Sugar Ray Norcia handled vocals and harmonica, and stuck around for the subsequent Bullseye albums Turn It On! Turn It Up! (1995, nominated for a Grammy) and Under One Roof (1997). Following the latter, a mass exodus of personnel left Roomful of Blues down to just a core of drummer Rossi, guitarist Vachon, trumpeter Enos, and saxman Lataille (even the long-running horn team was broken up). The remaining members restored the band to a nine-piece fronted by new vocalist McKinley "Mac" Odom, and returned in 1998 with There Goes the Neighborhood. Prior to recording their next album, longtime stalwart Rossi finally retired from the band and was replaced by Chris Lemp on 2001's Watch You When You Go. Looking to return to a more traditional blues sound, in early 2002 the band replaced Odom with singer/harpist Mark DuFresne. The group moved to Alligator Records in 2003 for That's Right, following it with a string of consistent albums for the label, including 2005's Standing Room Only, 2008's Raisin' a Ruckus, and 2011's Hook, Line & Sinker. The band celebrated their 45th anniversary in 2012 with 45 Live, recorded over three nights at Ocean Mist in Rhode Island. Alligator released the album from those shows the following year. 2020's In a Roomful of Blues, another release for Alligator, was produced by guitarist Chris Vachon, who also wrote several songs for the album; ten of the LP's 13 tracks were Roomful of Blues originals, the most yet on a ROB album. ~Steve Huey

When it comes to the British Blues scene, nobody has even come close to torching it to the magnitude that John Mayall has. In a career now spanning over 60 years, his band have kindled the careers of bountiful fledgling musical talents – Mick Taylor, Peter Green, and a certain Mr. Clapton just to name a few.

Even at the ripe age of 88, the “Godfather of the British Blues” shows no signs of reflecting the warm rays that toast his signature jazz-blues fusion sound. You won’t find a musician out there in the blues hemisphere that wouldn’t triple jump at the prospect of rubbing shoulders alongside a man imbued in blues royalty. The Sun Is Shining Down is no exception when it comes to Mayall’s strict recruitment policy that prides itself on the cream of the crop.

With special guests including The Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell, rising guitar virtuoso Marcus King, Chicago Blues icon Melvin Taylor, Scarlet Rivera (famously a member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue), and Hawaiian ukulele artist Jake Shimabukuro, it’s as aloof from the bottom of the well as one has come to expect from a man with an uncanny ear for talent and a deep-rooted obsession for the genre.
As an artist who provides the link between Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and the Rolling Stones, it’s safe to say his seat in musical history is already reserved. If you had any qualms about Mayall’s appetite to keep producing the goods, then the opening track “Hungry And Ready” will soon put any premonitions you had to bed. Mayall sounds energized – his voice still cuts the mustard, and if you needed reminding (like the writer here) he’s one hell of a harmonica player. Taylor also illustrates his class with some wonderfully fluid lead playing.

“Take No More” brings forth the innocence of youth as King takes center stage. Known for his soaring humbucker tone, he smokes and sizzles throughout this soulful Mayall original, without the slightest glimpse of being overawed. “Chills and Thrills” gives me funky goosebumps as Campbell proves himself a master of understated guitar. Not one to waste a note, his tasty fretwork is so melodic that you would think he’s a mainstay in among the star-studded cast.

I don’t often get to mention the electric ukulele, but the skill of Shimabukuro on “One Special Lady” is nothing short of mesmerizing. It brings a rich and fuller sound, that balances perfectly alongside the backing band par excellence.

On the fittingly titled “A Quitter Never Wins”, Mayall deservedly hogs the limelight as he goes at it solo without a guest to sprinkle over fairy dust. Wrapping up with the title track “The Sun Is Shining Down”, Carolyn Wonderland (approaching her fourth year as the band’s lead guitarist) plays beautifully on this mid-tempo number that leaves me feeling all red sky at night, shepherd’s delight.
I don’t think any superlatives exist that can do justice to John Mayall’s contribution to blues music. At his stage in life and given all he’s achieved, you have to take off your shoes (as well as tip your hat) to the level of work he’s still putting out there.

Whether Mayall holds promise for a few more sunrises remains to be seen, but mercifully there’s no glimmer of him swanning off into the sunset anytime soon. Keep on shining John. The Review: 8.5/10 ~Breton Towler

Eric Gales is a blues firebrand. Over 30 years and 18 albums, his passion for the music and his boundless desire to keep it vital has never waned, even when his own light dimmed due to his substance struggles. Throughout it all, he continued to reinvigorate the art form with personal revelation in his lyrics and bold stylistic twists in his guitar playing and songwriting. Five years sober, creatively rejuvenated, and sagely insightful, Eric is ready for the fight of his career. Aptly, he calls his masterful new album, Crown. Here, Eric opens like never before, sharing his struggles with substance abuse, his hopes about a new era of sobriety and unbridled creativity, and his personal reflections on racism. The songs are delivered with clarity and feature Eric's personal experiences and hope for positive change. In addition, the 16-track collection boasts his finest singing, songwriting, and his signature guitar playing that burns throughout. Produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, this is Eric at his most boldly vulnerable, uncompromisingly political, and unflinchingly confident. The Crown album journey is exhilarating, and, much like Eric's life, winds through moments of victory and vulnera-bility. Along the way, Eric shares his story and his feelings through the majesty of the blues. He says: "When I play, the core is always the blues, and on this album, we go through a theme park of the blues, exploring all kinds of blues. We visit the carousel, the bumper cars, the water rides, the concession stands, and we all come out with smiles."

North Mississippi Allstars - Set Sail

08. Juicy Juice (3:32)
09. Rabbit Foot (Feat. Lamar Williams Jr.) (4:05)
10. Authentic (Feat. Lamar Williams Jr.) (6:15)

The North Mississippi Allstars have mastered their métier and pin the meter on “Set Sail.” The 10 tunes from brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson and their casual collective are loose but tight, playful and joyful, high-flying but grounded in a groove.

It’s a family affair, and Luther channels his inner Sly Stone leading two- and three-part vocal arrangements that include Lamar Williams Jr., son of Allman Brothers bassist Lamar Williams Sr. The singalong vibe creates a hippy glow, and Luther sounds as if he has his feet up as he sings “feeling laid back” on the swamp romp “Bumpin’.”

The pulse comes courtesy of Cody, whose economical drumming style could coax a bouncy beat from a cooked spaghetti noodle smacked against an appliance manual. He needs just a few strokes kicking off the title cut to establish the album’s funk foundation, and shines especially bright on “Juicy Juice,” a funny hip-shaker that might make Prince blush.

The Dickinsons are always generous about sharing the spotlight, and R&B veteran William Bell draws on his Stax roots taking the lead vocal on “Never Want to Be Kissed,” which swings on a bed of both strings and horns. Sharisse Norman helps with call-and-response vocals on the dance tune “See the Moon,” and John Medeski contributes keyboard colors on two cuts.

The closing tune, “Authentic,” explains how the brothers do what they do: “We be funky naturally.” They make it sound so easy. ~Steven Wine

Wille & The Bandits - When The World Stood Still

Boundary-blasting UK roots rockers Wille & The Bandits continue to dish out their exceptionally creative and artistically fulfilling jams on the group’s fifth studio platter When The World Stood Still. Scheduled to impact January 28, 2022 on Fat Toad Records, the record was born out of mandatory pandemic down time and feels like a stylized chronicle of the last two years.

Already considered one of Europe’s most original current bands, WATB went on a Covid-inspired songwriting binge and wound up with a pack of anthems destined to resonate with all of those stuck in a time no one could have been ready for. Even cooler, the set is a crowdsourced effort that was tracked in one of Britain’s most famous hit-making facilities, the legendary Sawmills Studio, where stars including Robert Plant, Oasis, Stone Roses, Muse, and Supergrass have done groundbreaking work. Co-produced by the band and Sawmills honcho John Cornfield, When The World Stood Still is an obvious high-water mark from an already-distinguished group with a gleaming future.

Wille & The Bandits are a highly charged, critically acclaimed outfit hailing from Cornwall that many feel are redefining the meaning of roots rock for a new generation of listeners. They’re considered one of Europe’s finest live bands and have taken their show around the world, appeared at the London Olympics, and built a solid reputation as stage-takers and heartbreakers. Band members Wille Edwards (lead vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, dobro, electric lap steel), Harry Mackaill (backing vocals, bass guitar, synthesizer), Matthew Gallagher (Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, piano, Mellotron, guitar, backing vocals), and Tom Gilkes (drums and percussion) are an unforgettable, expressive unit that’s keeping roots music switched on and relevant to the days we’re all living. They’re the kind of band that scenes grow around organically. When The World Stood Still is their follow up to Paths (2019.)

The set opens with the amazing “Caught In The Middle,” a kinetic, dynamic cut that uses hip-hop, folk, and rock influences to address the political unrest and lack of identity the UK faces as it strives to once again become a global power. It has a big riff that’s good as gold, intelligent verses, and an explosive chorus that punches hard. This level of stylistic integration is par for the course with this lot and they make it all seem perfectly natural. Wille’s guitar work is sweet, slashing, and bold and his vocals are truly arena-worthy. If you had to introduce this band to a new listener, this would be a great place to start because it captures the band’s skills and attitude perfectly.

“Good Stuff” is a driving rock song with a hit-single chorus and the smoky flavor of Wille’s killer slide guitar playing. It builds up quite a boiler full of steam as it rolls along, maintaining a balance of lead vocals, backups, and crunching guitars that makes it pure ear candy for the loud crowd. If that’s you, get ready to stand up and sing.

“When The World Stood Still” is a soulful ballad about the early weeks of the pandemic lockdown when it seemed like nature might take the planet back from us. It showcases the gentle side of the group and features Wille playing some gorgeous dobro lines. It’s acoustic music with a spirit-fueled heart and will quickly win you over. Other winners on When The World Stood Still include the hard funk/rock of “Move Too Fast,” the forceful “Daylight,” and “Refuge,” a protest song for musicians struggling to live through Covid with little help. Wille & The Bandits have crafted an outstanding record that hits hard and speaks frankly to everyone fortunate enough to listen to it. These guys are about to blow up, so get in on the party. ~Martine Ehrenclou

Johnny Copeland - Jungle Swing

Johnny Copeland's eclectic nature is on display on Jungle Swing, an ambitious collaboration with jazz pianist Randy Weston. Weston brings a selection of African rhythms and melodic textures to the table, which are incorporated subtly into the rhythmic underpinnings of each song. In no sense is Jungle Swing a worldbeat experiment - it's just a small, affectionate tribute.

Even so, the African flourishes don't dominate the sound of the record. Like always, Copeland takes center stage with his clean, precise licks. At this point in his career, he knows exactly what to play and the guitarist never overplays throughout the course of the disc. There are a few weak moments on the disc, but the sheer strength of Copeland's musicianship - and his willingness to stretch out ever so slightly - make it worth the time for any of his fans. /Thom Owens, AllMusic

Saxophonist, producer, and bandleader John Firmin (aka Johnny Nocturne) formed the Johnny Nocturne Band - so named for his famous take on "Harlem Nocturne" - in 1989 to perform at and help out the owner of a blues club in Berkeley, California, with the idea of playing some soul-jazz, or heavily blues-based instrumental jazz. The band has gone on to be a club and festival favorite with a discography extending through the 1990s and into the new millennium.

Raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Firmin grew up in a household full of jazz and blues music, as his father also played saxophones. His earliest musical experiences included playing tenor saxophone in small groups, backing up exotic dancers. In his teens, he learned tunes by Stanley Turrentine, King Curtis, Hank Crawford, and David "Fathead" Newman; Curtis, Crawford, and Newman - as well as Leroy "Hog" Cooper - would be among his wide-ranging influences, and he seems to incorporate these artists' styles into his playing effortlessly, while still having his own distinctive sound.

Firmin later formed his own eight-piece band that included four horns and four rhythm players. His first big break was the chance to join David Bromberg's then phenomenally popular touring band in 1975. Like any good saxophonist working the club and festival circuit for years, Firmin's sessionography is extensive and includes dozens of recordings. He has recorded and/or toured with the likes of Bromberg, Paula Lockheart, Joe Louis Walker, Rusty Zinn, Bob Dylan, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Dave Myers, Mark Hummel, and Mitch Woods.

After the formation of the Johnny Nocturne Band in 1989, the group garnered a positive review in the local press and was asked to play at the legendary (now sadly defunct) San Francisco Blues Festival that same year. Hot on the heels of their appearance at the prestigious festival, Firmin and his band began an ongoing series of shows at Slim's in San Francisco, a blues and jazz club partly owned by Dallas-raised vocalist and songwriter Boz Scaggs. At Slim's, the Johnny Nocturne Band had their chance to expand their already vast repertoire, backing up the likes of Johnny Adams, Laverne Baker, Earl King, Johnny "Clyde" Copeland, and Otis Clay. The band performed several years in a row at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and also toured other parts of Europe as well as Japan.

The band landed a deal with Rounder Records in the 1990s and has issued a bevy of fine recordings for that label. Most recently, they released Million Dollar Secret with vocalist Kim Nalley for the label, but other good 1990s releases for Rounder include Wild and Cool, Shake ‘Em Up, and Wailin' Daddy. More recently, Firmin and his band have issued recordings on Blue Bucket Records. They include Good to the Damn Bone and Blues Volume. The former includes vocal contributions from three distinguished female vocalists, Brenda Boykin, Kim Nalley, and Miss Dee. Miss Dee was formerly the featured vocalist with the Johnny Otis Band. Blues Volume showcases the wide-ranging talents of Miss Dee exclusively. /Biography by Richard Skelly, AllMusic

Reddick is basically a blues singer and a fine harmonica player, but his music does not restrict itself to the blues. Various selections fall more into rock, pop, soul, and even hints of New Orleans jazz, while mostly being somewhat uncategorizable. Drawn from several previous releases, this program features Reddick with either the Sidemen (a quartet) or the Rhythm and Truth Brass Band (a medium-sized group). Most memorable are "I'm a Criminal," "Am I Right or Wrong," "'Round This Time of Year," and "You Know It Ain't Right." Paul Reddick manages to look back to the past while creating new music, and the results are consistently intriguing and enjoyable. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

In the last twenty years, Roger C. Wade (harp / vocals) has established himself as an outstanding harmonica player in the guild of German Bluestraditionalists. His powerful as well as sensitive style, haunting blues feeling paired with a healthy level of virtuosity inspire the Blu-ray specialist and the party audience alike. Spontaneity, humor and an energetic "stage presence" - this is the way the audience has appreciated Roger C. Wade in Germany and Europe for over 20 years.

Born in 1968 in Norwich, England, Roger not only discovered British blues in the mid-'80s, but mainly his love of classical blues. After his first gigs as a duo on the streets of England, he already moved to Germany, where he played in his first German blues band in the early 90s, first as sideman then as frontman and singer. Shortly thereafter, Roger founded his first band, Excuse My Blues, along with his wife Marion on the piano. The course was set and the direction clear - it was about Blues, Boogie and RnB. In 1994, Roger spent several months in the US, where he worked with many well-known blues artists between New York and San Francisco.

After this exciting and characteristic time, Roger returned to Germany and founded the band Little Roger & The Houserockers with his wife Marion on the piano and Tilmann Michalke on guitar. Over the last 20 years, numerous well-known musicians have been guest performers of the band, ia. Alex Schulz, Chris Rannenberg, Marc T uvm. In 2010, the band completed a two-week tour with RJ Mischo in Europe.

The band has recorded four CDs, the last "Jumping at Jack's Joint" with Thomas Feldmann, Sax Gordon and with special guest Marc T, who has also produced two CDs of the band. In addition to the Houserockers Roger regularly with other bands on the stage, in particular Jan Mohr and the Backscratchers and the duo "Roger Mohr."

Little Roger & The Houserockers are totally dedicated to their love of blues, especially the blues and boogie of the 40s and 50s. The band differentiates itself from other retro bands through its dynamic live show that leaves the audience in clubs or at festivals with tired legs, sore hands and a smile on their face - a rousing show that you should not miss live.

In 1998 the MICK PINI BAND won the prestigious ‘Blues Band of the Month’ award at ‘Talkin Blues’ in Cologne, Germany. The band recorded their authoritative Mike Vernon-produced album “Blues Gonna Be My Way” in 1989.

You’ll also perhaps know the “Wildman” British blues veteran from his group “B.E.P.” (Black, Estrada, Pini) an ensemble whose personnel included the (now rakeshame) Little Feat bassist Roy Estrada, the Mothers of Invention drummer Jimmy Carl Black, Peter Bruder on rhythm guitar (with whom Pini worked on his album “Come On Into My Kitchen” 1999) and Gregor“ Squibb ”Wittner on keyboards.

The new album, Backtrack originates from a concept by renowned D.J. blues promoter and writer Pete Feenstra and is a collection of Pini’s favorite tracks from an extensive catalog. All tracks were written by Pini except “Shadows” and “Slow Hands” which were both co-written with producer Craig Marshall. “Blues is Cheap” was written with guitarist Al Sansome.

We had a listen —

Just as the title suggests, the album somersaults into life with “Jumping Blues” which is a tasty slice of heritage-pie, a push-chugging blues rocker. And, of course, it’s a jump-blues number! The track incorporates feckless keys, rough-motion rhythms and strong distinctive vocals. It’s a bristle brush roller that will make everyone get up and dance, and it has super lemony guitar to spice it all up! Fizzy!

Pini is inspired by the openness & lightness of Peter Green, the sweetness, the string bending, and the vibrato, so “Blues for Peter Green” is purity and insight. The articulation of his instrument communicates a smooth perspective and wise contemplation. This is a thing of such graceful beauty!

“Shadows” has a wonderful long-legged bass-line and lots of glittery jingles from the ivory. This is a candlelit sound with soft vibrations and dreamy voices. A purr of jazz ‘n’ blues, with dreamlike expression. Comforting!

“Blues is Cheap” has a raffish slide riff and a scruffy (but oaky) voice. Here Pini’s guitar-work is dark, then vixenish, like a deceptive fox caught snagging away a bird in the night.

“Slow Hands” is a refinement of quality blues licking… a timelessly smooth piece of sophistication with guitar-work that is always clear & expressive… plus, the atmosphere is super-sultry! Wonderful! ~Neil Mach

Great Jazz singers are timeless. The ability to control one’s voice and sing with a combination of precision and attitude is truly a unique talent that precious few people possess: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Diana Krall to name a few. That’s why it’s so impressive and moving when you hear someone like Louise Cappi who brings that Jazz talent to her joyous exuberant music on Hope, an album full of empowerment and, well, hope.

Hope is an engaging record full of surprise and diverse moods swirling around Cappi’s commanding vocals at the heart. With a clear voice finely tuned and well maintained, Cappi moves effortlessly from classic songbird sweetness to tough and sassy, sometimes within the same song. Armed with a tight core 4 piece band and studded with background vocals and other occasional accompaniment, Hope is an exhibition of the breadth of Cappi’s range and juxtaposed interests.

The 70’s Disco funk of “Keep That Dream Alive” gives way to the cool beatnik Jazz swing of “The Dq Guy” resplendent with a scat vocal solo. The JB’s funk of “Talkin Talkin” blasts open into the multi tracked atmospheric vocals of the string laden “Beautiful Dreams.” The slow Blues anguish of “Matter of Time” releases it’s tension into the tongue in cheek put down “She’s Too Tall for You.”

Your slightly cynical Northeastern reviewer bristles at overtly positive songs. They often sound forced and trite. But, Louise Cappi’s Motown flavored title track melts my cold New England heart. On “Hope” Cappi describes the many virtues and remedies that hope offers. It is beautiful and affecting. Singing lines that would sound clunky from other singers, Cappi offers the listener a soaring benediction for these tough times.

Relationship songs, one’s in which the narrator exhorts the wonders of their partner, also sometimes fall flat. Again Cappi braves the waters and triumphs. On “Only You” Cappi sings of mature love and commitment over a smooth airy 70’s mellow Yacht Rock vibe. A singer of Cappi’s talent can sing “I want to spend my life with you” and make it come across as meaningful. This kind of mature reflection on love and comfort in a life filled with commitment is unique.

Louise Cappi has created a triumphant display of talent and emotional connection in her album Hope. Reverend Nathon is a Texas blues-rock band fronted by Nathon Dees and based out of Marble Falls, TX. Dees is very much the main man here, contributing vocals and background vocals, lead and rhythm guitar, bass, slide guitar, recording and engineering, production and songwriting, whilst receiving able support from Gary Delz on drums and Aaron Dees on bass.

As one might hope from a three-piece from Texas, the album kicks off with the ZZ Top-esque gallop of “Darker Shade Of Blues”. It is immediately apparent that Reverend Nathon is on the rockier side of blues rock, with a healthy slice of Southern Rock thrown into the mix as well. The snake-like single-note riff that underpins “Bi Polar Blues” reminds one of early Johnny Winter whilst the slide-driven boogie of “Walking On” sounds like something George Thorogood wishes he had written. As the album progresses, however, there is more than a hint of the rock-funk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in “I Find Hope Again” while both “The Way It Could Have Been” and “Golden Key” have a gloriously early-80’s Southern Rock feel to them – the former even has an echo of “Highway Song” to it.

Dees is a fine guitar playing, capable of both raucous lead guitar such as the wah-wah’ed solo on “I Find Hope Again” and the closing solo on “A Better Day” as well as gentle finger-picked acoustic on the power ballad, “Autumn Breeze”. His slide playing, on tracks like “Goin’ Fishin’” is top drawer. He sings in a warm, weather-beaten voice that is particularly effective on “Golden Key”. He also displays a wry sense of humor in the heavy shuffle of “Millennial Blues”, which opens with the classic line: “Hey man. I’m offended by everything. I think I may have the Millennial Blues”, while “Bi Polar Blues” actually addresses a very serious issue of mental health.

Reverend Nathon are the type of band one is delighted to find playing in a smoky bar on a Saturday night. Vol 1 is a lot of fun to listen to but it is not a blues album. It’s a Southern Rock album with a discernible blues influence. So don’t expect the Texas blues of the likes of Albert Collins, Lou Ann Barton, Johnny Copeland or Anson Funderburgh. If however your tastes run to the guitar-focused, blues-influenced Southern Rock of the likes of Blackfoot or even .38 Special, you will find a lot to enjoy in Reverend Nathon. ~Rhys Williams

From a seriously overdriven boogie like Tomboy Boogie to the blistering grinding blues Shelter Me, or the languid soul ballad Searching that wavers between influences of Otis Redding and Van Morrison, while Sad Sad Song is an effective tribute to our supreme howler Howlin' Wolf.
