As part of the Heritage of the Blues series on Hightone Records, Skull & Crossbones Blues provides a well-rounded retrospective of blues guitarist and onetime Robert Johnson cohort Johnny Shines. These 12 tracks capture Shines in a number of different settings, including both acoustic and electric, solo, and fronting a legendary Chicago band with Big Walter Horton, Otis Spann, and Fred Below. Shines' Robert Johnson influence is investigated on versions of "Standing at the Crossroads" and "Rollin' & Tumblin'," while material recorded in Los Angeles in the 1970s includes a snippet of guitarist Luther Allison at the beginning of his career. The tracks have been digitally remastered and lovingly compiled by fan and Hightone artist Dave Alvin. ~Al Campbell

Joe Hughes - Live At Vredenburg (2-Disc set)

Joe 'Guitar' Hughes (vocals, guitar) , Sonny Boy Terry (harmonica) , Tanya Richardson (bass) , David Lartigue (drums).

Houston was homebase to a remarkable cadre of red-hot blues guitarists during the 1950s. Joe Hughes was not as well known as his peers Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland, but he was a solid electric bluesman with a formidable discography. Another of his Houston neighbors, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, lit a performing fire in Hughes when he was 14. Lone Star stalwarts T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown also exerted their influence on Hughes' playing. His path crossed Copeland's circa 1953 when the two shared vocal and guitar duties in a combo called the Dukes of Rhythm. Hughes served as bandleader at a local blues joint known as Shady's Playhouse from 1958 through 1963, cutting a few scattered singles of his own in his spare time ("I Can't Go on This Way," "Ants in My Pants," "Shoe Shy"). In 1963, Hughes hit the road with the Upsetters, switching to the employ of Bobby "Blue" Bland in 1965 (he also recorded behind the singer for Duke) and Al "TNT" Braggs from 1967 to 1969.

A long dry spell followed, but Hughes finally came back to the spotlight with a fine set for Black Top in 1989 with If You Want to See These Blues (by that time, he'd inserted a "Guitar" as his middle name, much like his old pal Watson). Hughes' then released Texas Guitar Slinger, (1996, Blueseye Blues), Down & Depressed: Dangerous (1997, Munich), and Stuff Like That (2001, Blues Express), which contain slashing blends of blues and soul with the ocassional tightly arranged horn section and, most importantly, enough axe to fulfill Hughes' adopted nickname. After half a century of playing the blues, Joe "Guitar" Hughes passed away on May 20, 2003 after suffering a heart attack. ~bio by Bill Dahl

In 2015, the Compulsions released Dirty Fun, their best album to date, which showcases lingerie-clad legs and font that’s a nod to the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album cover. Ex- Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa and Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus have departed from the group but have been replaced by the equally exciting bassist Alec Morton and upper echelon guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal.

What’s great about Rob Carlyle & The Compulsions is that they are real musicians who not only are masters of their instruments, but also know that changing it up is key. Not every song sounds the same on Dirty Fun, in fact, tunes range from an up-tempo, rockabilly-inspired number to dusty, beer swillin’ biker vibes. The glory days of ZZ Top and AC/DC have passed. Tossed to the side for sappy, yawn producing crooners Coldplay and the commercial pop fakeness of Katy Perry. We’ve had enough Kanye. . . we want our screaming guitars back. Rob and his crew are helping break the streak of mediocrity that dominates the music halls and radio stations.

The CD was recorded in the bands “Bunker”-studio, mixed at Perfect studio and the mastering took place at Finnvox. STMBB was trying to reach the old ‘garage-sound’ by near mono-mixing and skipping finetuning of the so called sonic barrier (sound barrier). The recording of the base was done with most of the band at one time, only the horns were added later. There has been no instrumental or singing add-ons, nor any extra effect apart from a small amount of reverb. In other words the STMBB sound on the record is as close to ‘live’ as it can be.

The pictures on the CD cover were taken already in 1993 on Åsbacka road, then meant for the band-poster. The idea behind the picture came from Hannu Linblom and Joni Still took the photos. The print on the CD itself comes from the first STMBB poster from 1968.

1995 brought the release of Anthony Paule's debut solo album, BIG GUITAR (on Blue Dot Records). BIG GUITAR introduced Anthony as a songwriter. Blues fans and critics alike had nothing but praise for BIG GUITAR. Anthony spent the summer of '95 and early '96 touring and promoting BIG GUITAR in Europe and throughout the U.S. Also, in 1996 Charlie Musselwhite asked Anthony to work with his band. With Charlie, he toured the U.S., Canada and Turkey. In 1996, with the Johnny Nocturne Band, Anthony performed at more Festivals including The Monterey Jazz Festival (backing Big Jay McNeely), Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, Victoria and Vancouver Jazz Festivals (backing up Johnny Adams); and The Monterey Blues Festival.

The first collection of Muddy Waters in the Complete Blues series, Feel Like Going Home, featured his very first recordings for the Library Of Congress and some of his earliest recordings for the Aristocrat and Chess labels in Chicago. This collection picks up his story in 1953 by which time he had enjoyed half a dozen R&B chart hits and was as established on the road as he was in the Chicago clubs where he had originally made his name.

The sessions featured on this collection include the biggest and most influential hits of his career. Such undisputed classics as 'Mad Love', 'Hoochie Coochie Man', and 'I Just Want To Make Love To You' became the template for The Rolling Stones who had additionally taken their name from his 1950 recording 'Rollin' Stone'.

Beginning at the beginning in 1929, this set travels all the way through the '40s (where he developed his style as the electric blues genre), through 1951 on labels from Columbia to Capitol to Black and White and others in between.

David “Honeyboy” Edwards was the last of the great Mississippi Delta bluesmen. In early 2010 Honeyboy was given the Lifetime Achievement award from the Grammys. Later that same year in September, Honeyboy returned to Los Angeles to perform at a venue called the G Spot, nimbly accompanied by Jeff Dale & The South Woodlawners and Honeyboy’s long time friend and manager Michael Frank.

This show turned out to be the last time Honeyboy was filmed and recorded. He was 95 years old at the time and still singing and playing like a man half that age. Fortunately, at the end of the performance, one camera remained on to capture Honeyboy giving advice to musicians, telling stories of his life, vividly recalling the night Robert Johnson died, and tales of Charlie Patton, Big Walter Horton and others.

This slice of blues history is now available as a beautiful CD/DVD package titled “I’m Gonna Tell You Somethin’ That I Know.” The recording captures the timeless, evocative power of the blues and also documents Honeyboy’s warmth and humor and his palpable connection to Jeff Dale, one of his “sons of the blues.”

Buddy Guy's music has changed a great deal since this album was recorded in Chicago in 1981. It is possible that Guy has never sounded better than this, tearing into some deep indigo blues, letting his guitar wail loud on every cut, and playing with inspiration, especially on the title cut and "Dedication to the Late T-Bone Walker," a track that seems to spring from some place deep within himself. Nor was he the only one on fire at the sessions. Brother Phil Guy shares the guitar work and contributes vocals to both "Garbage Man Blues" and "Mellow Down." The recording makes no attempt to capture a wide audience. This is Buddy Guy playing and feeling the blues, pure and simple, without any sense of compromise -- and it's all the better for it, putting much of the rest of his catalog into perspective. Rarely is the blues this heartfelt -- and rarer still is it so well played. If this were his only recorded legacy, he'd still warrant the stature he's achieved. ~Chris Nickson

Blues Jam is an impressive follow up to Adrienne’s recent instrumental release, Mo’ Puddin’ that quickly climbed the jazz charts.

What sets Blues Jam apart from other albums is the unique combination of a female led, organ/vocal trio. Blues Jam is a showcase of Adrienne’s captivating vocals combined with the propulsive energy of an organ trio. The blend of Marvin’s virtuosity on guitar, Brian’s dynamic drumming, locking in with Adrienne’s left hand bass and innovative bluesy soloing, has come together to create refreshing new versions of songs in the spirit of BB King, Ray Charles, Billie Holiday and others.

Adrienne Fenemor, jazz organist, vocalist, composer and band leader was born and raised in Nelson, New Zealand. Some of her earliest influences started when she was just 4, listening to her dad as he practiced and performed on his organ. After discovering Oscar Peterson at the age of 13, Adrienne knew she was destined and determined to be a great jazz musician.

Adrienne, currently based in New York City since 2009, can be found performing in iconic venues such as Showman’s Jazz Club, BB Kings Blues Club and The Red Rooster. Her insuppressible goal is to entertain audiences around the world with the unique sound that she has captured on this new album.

Thomas Toussaint: Vocals & Harmonica:
Thomas is the frontman and harmonica player of the group. He delivers the goods and always strives for doing so as tastefully as he possibly can. He's influenced by the usual suspects in harmonica land such as Little Walter, both Sonny Boy Williamsons, Big Walter Horton, George 'Harmonica' Smith, William Clarke and Paul deLay. Also the more contemporary players such as Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin and Sugar Ray Norcia are in there. For vocals, he admires greats such as Ray Charles, Bobby Bland, and B.B. King. The list is endless, really. He also enjoys listening to horn players like Hank Crawford and Louis Jordan. Thomas likes a variety of styles that eventually can be mixed with blues such as New Orleans R&B and New York funk music.

Leander Nijland: Guitar
Leander is the successful recipe behind the lightning guitar sounds that you'll hear when the band is performing. He is a very versatile guitar player and he's well versed in various styles of blues and roots music. He's influenced by guitarists like T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters and B.B. King. Leander has played with some European greats such as Kai Strauss and Memo Gonzales and already has a decent bag of experience.

Dirk Wagensveld: Bass
Dirk is the groover of the band. His sense of rhythm is impeccable and he is the heart of the group along with his rhythm section colleague Paolo, who's in the driver seat. Dirk also plays guitar and is a very fine allround musician. He's very much influenced by his father, Dick Wagensveld, the previous bass player of Richard van Bergen's Rootbag, who unfortunately is no longer with us. Dirk is of great added value to the band!

Paolo De Stigter: Drums
He's dedicated to learning the tricks of the trade and he's guided by master drummer Jody van Ooijen (Little Steve and the Big Beat, Rootbag). Paolo has a unique sense of swing and knows how to be a whole with Dirk to ensure a cooking groove in every song!

First and foremost, Ville Mehto, a.k.a. Little Willie Mehto, is a wonderful harmonica player with big tone and chops to spare, playing acoustic throughout this album and bringing to mind Sonny Boy Williamson II and Big Walter Horton in more or less equal measure. Don't miss the instrumental "Big Annie", with two harmonicas overdubbed not so much on top of as next to each other, creating a lovely old-timey backporch orchestra sound - and to hear Mehto play amplified harp, check out last year's Little Willie & The Night Train CD "Break It Up Baby!". In addition, Little Willie is a solid guitarist/slide player and a capable vocalist. Occasionally, he prefers to sing in that peculiar carrot-voice register associated with 22 Pistepirkko and apparently rather popular in Finnish roots rock these days; audiences may love it, but it does play hell with some of Mehto's more affected Deep South mannerisms. Works well enough whenever Little Willie phrases like Ville Mehto, though...

Anyway, Little Willie's solo debut starts off with several three-minute tunes built on a guitar riff and what seems like a single line of lyrics on repeat. I'm sure some folks will call it hypnotic, I'll just say that adding the Finno-Ugric background chant on "Jungle Baby" was a nice ethnic touch. With track six - the title track - the tempo slows down and the music starts to pick up. As the album progresses, the flatpicked slide gives way to fingerpicked textures, with the vocals gaining more and more depth, sincerity and bottom end. Then the last track "Faithful Man" takes us back to where we started from - and where we started from was a tune called "Low Down Woman".

The Aitken family, originally from Scotland, settled in the Atherton Tableland area of Queensland's Deep North and felt no reason to leave for several generations. 8 Ball Aitken inherited the family's distinctive shock of bright red hair, but not that desire to stay in the one place. At the age of 19 he gave up his life picking fruit and living in a tobacco shed, and hitchhiked south to the city of Brisbane with his guitar to make it as a country musician. At an early gig in a rowdy pub a fight broke out over a pool table and the 8 Ball was knocked onto the stage, leading the band to give him his nickname and the title of his first recording, Behind the 8 Ball, released in 2004. Its acoustic mix of country, roots, and distinctively Australian subject matter made Aitken the choice of Brisbane's mayor to head the inaugural Grass Roots Music Festival. Aitken also won a grant in the form of one of musician John Butler's JB Seeds, which he used to travel to Sydney and study pedal steel with legendary session guitarist Michel Rose. Blues singer Karen Carroll was seemingly destined for a career in music: not only was her mother Jeanne Carroll a blues and jazz vocalist as well, but her godparents were guitarist George Freeman and singer Bonnie Lee. Born in Chicago on January 30, 1958, Carroll started performing at the age of nine, joining her mother's band as a guitarist five years later; at 18 she struck out on her own, cutting her teeth in tiny South Side blues joints and developing a deep vocal style heavily influenced by jazz phrasing as well as the intensity of gospel. Angelo J Rossi, aka “AJ Crawdaddy” is an American Blues Guitarist born in Palo Alto, California and a long-time Bay Area performing artist. AJ is best known for his work with the popular Marin-based pop group Pablo Cruise which charted multi-platinum albums, "A Place In The Sun" and "Worlds Away," and producing hits like, "A Place In The Sun," "Love Will Find A Way," "Whatcha Gonna Do” (When She Says Goodbye), “Rio" and "Cool Love." He is a BMI published writer and a voting member of N.A.R.A.S. (Grammy).

AJ owns and operates The Cave Recording Studio in The San Francisco Bay Area, recording and producing local artists such as Bruce Conte, Finis Tasby, Terry Hiatt, Steve Freund, Paula Harris, Terrie Odabi and others. He has also worked with the likes of South Bay Blues recording artist, Christoffer "Kid" Andersen and Harmonica savant Aki Kumar, and immerses himself in the local San Jose Blues scene by frequent participation in several local Music Jams and Blues Society events. On the other side of "the studio glass" as a guitarist, AJ has worked and recorded with Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Jaco Pastorius and legendary record producers Thomas J. Eddie "Guitar" Burns has been a fixture of the Detroit blues scene since his arrival in the late 1940s when he recorded with John Lee Hooker. He became Hooker's guitar player for a long stretch, but also achieved notoriety as a songwriter, the most successful was "Orange Driver" which was covered by the J. Geils Band. Burns also recorded for Chess and Motown. On this album he does some songs from his stint with Motown (their only blues artist) and many newly penned tunes. b. 8 February 1928, Mississippi, USA. Inspired by John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson and self-taught, Burns was a stalwart of the immediate post-war Detroit blues scene, being first recorded in 1948 by Bernie Bessman. The latter was responsible for giving John Lee Hooker his break and used Burns as a session musician for Hooker in 1949. This session produced four tracks, including the fast shuffle ‘Burnin’ Hell’, which was notable for Burns’ powerful harmonica playing. Throughout the 50s and 60s he periodically recorded for Joe Van Battle, who either released the material on his own JVB and Von labels or else sold the masters to concerns such as Gotham and Checker. Rarely straying from his home state of Michigan, Burns briefly visited Europe in 1972 under the billing Eddie ‘Guitar’ Burns, recording an album in London for Action. He returned three years later for a more intensive tour under the ‘American Blues Legends ’75’ banner. Since then Eddie Burns has stayed mostly in Detroit, working day-jobs, playing clubs in the evenings and occasionally appearing at festivals. He guested on Detroit Junior’s Take Out The Time in 1998.

This band came out of the London Soho Jamming scene. Specifically the world famous "Ain't Nothing but the Blues" bar (also called the Blues Bar) on Kingly Street. The bar is evokes the blues charm and when you step in it feels like you could be in Chicago. It attracts great musicians and is the centre of the London blues scene. Led by Rob Booth, an excellent songwriter, singer and guitarist and accompanied by the wonderful Fran Okine on bass, Paul Bucknor on drums and Fred Par on keys, we have produced a cd which we are extremely proud of.

Can't Stop is a beautifully recorded and tastefully mixed set of songs which will take the listener from chilling out (The Cold) to throwing themselves around the room (Everyones Having Fun). You'll hear influences from the 70's, 90's and 00's. The music is powerful and the lyrics are thought provoking. We hope you enjoy..

I was born in Greymouth on the remote West Coast of the South Island of NZ. Our family had little resources or opportunity, but I grew up in an era where people would gather around the piano and sing together. From when I was very young I played piano while everybody sang along or played tea chest basses, eggbeaters, combs, violins, even an old saxophone.

I had an Auntie who played honky tonk style, and heard Winifred Atwell along with early rock n roll on our old Columbus Radio in the kitchen. Playing piano from the moment I could reach the keys, and being spurred on by my older sister and brother who both played, I studied classical very seriously, becoming a star student, passing all my grades with distinction and gaining a very prestigious place (one of 4 students from the whole of NZ) to study a 5 year classical piano degree at Auckland University. Although I loved classical music, by the end of the degree I wasn’t happy to be a concert pianist or, more likely, a piano teacher. So I cut off my hair, and moved to Wellington where I experimented with different styles of music, working in an independent theatre group and then rock bands. In 1980 my band, “Coup D’Etat” had a No. 1 hit with the song “Doctor I Like Your Medicine”, after which I moved across the Tasman to Sydney, playing in bands and piano bars as well as writing music for films. It was some years later before I found my own voice, as a boogie piano player and songwriter.

As well, they won the Sacramento IBC Competition in 2010 and went on to Memphis to compete with bands from all over the world. Most recently, the band was nominated for a "Sammie Award" here in Sacramento. This sharp, well-rehearsed band makes it an "event" both musically and visually every time they perform their mix of gritty Chicago style harmonica driven blues and West Coast Swing.

The entire album was recorded at the Blue Front Café, the oldest juke joint in Mississippi. The record purposefully allows its cinderblock acoustics to be Jimmy’s accompaniment compelling the listener to close their eyes and experience pulling up a chair in the old juke joint and listening to him play. Those same walls have absorbed the haunting music of Skip James, Jack Owens, Henry Stuckey, Bud Spires, Cornelius Bright, Tommy West and others over the years and provided the perfect feedback to Jimmy’s stark and dissonant blues.

Jimmy “Duck” Holmes is the embodiment of raw country blues and this album presents the full range of his singular talents. Jimmy’s tenor voice rises and falls along with the electric menace of an old Harmony Stratotone, the full smoothness of a 12 string and the jangling hypnotic rhythms of his acoustic Epiphone. A few songs also feature Jimmy’s slow and mournful harp overlaying and contrasting with the minor tuning that makes the Bentonia Blues so distinctive and unique.

The Bentonia Blues traces its roots to early blues musician, Henry Stuckey who developed a unique style of playing using an odd open D-minor and E-minor tuning that he developed after meeting some British soldiers from Trinidad or the Bahamas in France during World War I. Stuckey brought the tuning back to the small, isolated Mississippi town of Bentonia and taught it to Skip James, Jack Owens, Jacob Stuckey and Cornelius Bright. Together these musicians elevated the unique style of blues evolving in Bentonia by playing together and writing songs invoking dark and brooding imagery.

Bentonia Blues continued to develop when Mary and Carey Holmes started the Blue Front Café in 1948, the year after Jimmy “Duck” Holmes was born. Henry Stuckey lived next door. His guitar was the first guitar Jimmy ever held in his hands and Jimmy is regarded as the last bluesman Henry Stuckey ever taught.

After Jimmy took over the operation of the Blue Front Café in 1970, it became more than just a place for the local blues musicians to play on weekends. It became the center of the Bentonia Blues with Jack Owens, Bud Spires, Jacob Stuckey, Cornelius Bright, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and Hill Country Blues musician Tommy West regularly meeting at the Blue Front Café to shoot pool, have a few drinks and listen to each other play. Jack would teach Jimmy how to play the Bentonia Blues by telling him, “Watch my hands, boy. Watch my hands.”

Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has since emerged as one of the most original and uncompromising country blues musicians playing today as he preserves the Bentonia Blues tradition taught to him by the originals, Henry Stuckey and Jack Owens. Fans of Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and the Bentonia Blues can hear it first-hand almost every day at the Blue Front Café. Stop in and grab a cold drink on a hot summer day or sit by the barrel stove on a cold winter day and, if you’re lucky, Jimmy may play you a song or two. If you’re really lucky, he may show you how. Until then, fans can put on this record, close their eyes and listen to Jimmy’s toe tapping the dusty concrete floor, the light clacking of a ceiling fan, the roar of a train and the most original and important country blues being played today.

This was Sonny talking to Paul in 1977, guiding Paul to become the great performer & player he is today ......in many ways unknowingly, inspiring his new album.

This latest album has developed over numerous drop-in sessions at The Trench Studios ,which is owned by producer and musician Paula Riordan. Paula has collaborated with Paul on many of his great recordings. Recordings which include the pop hit “Harmonica Man” from 1994, up to and including the award winning “Hole in the Wall” album from 2014.

With Paul and the King Snakes being regular visitors to The Trench, it came as no surprise, that one night Paula got a phone call … “ just finished a gig nearby & we’re on our way to you”.
As you would expect with 5 musicians, 1 producer and various instruments, something is bound to happen. What started out as a friendly late night jam was, through Paula’s forethought, recorded for posterity.
During that first impromptu, unrehearsed session, several tracks were recorded with various members of the band contributing late into the night, as and when the mood took them.
Later Paula reviewed the session and found that there were, as Paul would say “killer tracks" and a decision was made to lay down some more, over the coming months.

It was felt by both Paul and Paula that all the tracks should be recorded in the same simple but effective way, to capture the raw sound like the first session, as an unrehearsed jam. Over the next few months’ several more of these late night sessions followed.
Very little post production was applied, just enough to clean up the odd rough edge, you may still hear the occasional click, crackle or clink but none of this detracts from the feeling, the atmosphere and the spontaneity of the music.
This is what makes the new album so special, "it is, as it was" just 5 great blues players, playing what they feel. No long protracted studio sessions, it is a raw, natural and organic Blues album.
This album is for the purist and the avid Paul Lamb fan, along with enough great tunes to attract new listeners to the Blues.
Some wonderful, impulsive and improvised recordings, back to the roots of Country Blues, effortless but enthralling songs, played by celebrated musicians, simply having a great time.

As the maestro Sonny would say “play what you feel and feel what you play”

Rita Engedalen is often referred to as "Norway’s Queen of the Blues". Engedalen creates and performs her own music and is thoroughly genuine. "Chapels And Bars" is Rita Engedalen’s 4th album. Of her previous albums Engedalen has won the Norwegian Grammy award for the album “Heaven Ain’t Ready For Me Yet” and she was also nominated for a Grammy for her last album, "The Tree Still Standing". Rita Engedalen has built a large audience through an impressive series of festival appearances and touring at home and abroad. So it is with good reason that she is often referred to as Norway’s Queen of the Blues. The brand new album Chapels And Bars consists mainly of newly written original material and was released in connection with the Notodden Blues Festival in early August 2011.

Musical guests on the album include names such as Bjørn Berge, Tuva L. Syvertsen (Valkyrien Allstars), Knut Hem (Hem Strengelag, Reidar Larsen) and Margit Bakken (Women In Blues) and the Swedish blues champion Sven Zetterberg. Stringmachine Bjørn Berge also contributes to the album with great guitar playing and his powerful singing on the title song "Chapels And Bars". Sven Zetterberg contributes with soulful singing and wonderful harmonica in a version of Rita’s concert favorite "Ball And Chain". The guest list is topped by a gospel choir from Mississippi. It was a dream come true when Engedalen traveled to Mississippi and recorded the song “Holy Land” with Coahoma Community College Choir. All these wonderful guest appearences contributes to make Chapels And Bars Rita Engedalen’s most varied and consistent album release to date.

In 2010 Rita Engedalen was awarded the prestigious honor Notodden Blues Festival Blues Award. In the same year, Rita also received the prestigious “Gammleng Prize” awarded by the Fund for Performing Artists in Norway. During this year’s Kongsberg Jazz Festival Rita Engedalen, as the second woman in history, was awarded “Kongsberg City of Merit”.

Quintus McCormick Blues Band - 2 albums: Put It On Me! / Hey Jodie!

Born in Detroit in 1957 and fascinated by music and guitar all of his life, Quintus did not become “anointed” with the blues until about twenty years ago when he was playing in J.W. Williams’ Chi-town Hustlers band while earning his bachelor’s degree in music from Chicago’s Columbia College. Since that time, Quintus has toured the world playing guitar for the likes of A.C. Reed, James Cotton, Lefty Dizz and Otis Clay.

Buddy Guy and James Cotton encouraged Quintus to form his own band in the mid-nineties, and they have been a mainstay on the Chicago scene ever since. His debut album is much deserved and well overdue; Quintus came to the studio chock-full of great original songs which he recorded over a span of only two days back in November 2008.

Quintus’ Chicago blues connections are apparent by the band backing him, including long-standing Chicago soul blues keyboard man Roosevelt “Mad Hatter” Purifoy, Lovely “JR” Fuller on bass, Jeremiah Thomas on drums, and the famous Chicago Horns, featuring Kenny Anderson on trumpet, Hank Ford on tenor sax, and Willie Henderson on baritone sax. In addition, Ted Reynolds supplies great harp work throughout the album, and Quintus is backed by the wonderful voices of Roberta Thomas, Gwenyth Hayes, and Jamie Holesha on many songs.

Perhaps, some might say it is strange to define yourself as a Boogie-Woogie-pianist already as a young boy, but that is what Nico did when he was a knee-high boy. Of course, he needed courage, an extraordinary talent and a certain kind of smartness. When Nico was 8 years old, he found his neighbor's piano and he suddenly fell in love with its magical tone. Furthermore, Nico discovered the world of Rock'n'Roll, lightning fast Boogie-Woogie-rhythms, breathtaking bass lines and shining melodies. He played with his hands and even with his feet. However, in the beginning of his career, Nico needed to be smart; as a kid, he pretended to be sick so that he could stay at home and rehearse instead. As a young musician, after his concerts he played chess against the owners of the clubs to double his salary. It was all or nothing. Later, not even angry neighbours could stop Nico Brina's career. Once, a neighbour threw a chair into Nico's window because he had enough of Nico's everlasting rehearsals. All that the police then said, was; "Don't mess around with a pianoman". Nico took this quote and wrote a song about this incident.

After some time, Nico added the Blues to his repertoire, and this was like the missing link to finally define his own unique sound. He travelled around and he played his Boogie-Woogie-driven Blues music almost anywhere in the world. He played in Europe, in the Caribbean, in Kazakhstan, in Singapore... - and he even won several awards such as the "Prix Walo" (1995), the "Guinness Book of World Records" title for the fastest Boogie-Woogie ever (1996) and he got a nomination from the "Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik" for his album "Flight 6024" (Category Blues 2014). It has been over 30 years since the journey started. More than 2'000 shows in 16 different countries, more than 750'000 km on the road, 12 albums, one LP, one DVD.

Nico still feels happiness when he plays his piano - just like a child playing its first note. There is magic, when he combines his talent, his power and his musical wit. It is this mixture that makes the entertainer become an artist. Brina is a wizard, maybe a fool, but he shows us where passion can lead us.
