Bassists Dave Kasik (Bryan Lee) and Kurt Koenig, drummers Vodie Rhinehart and Bob Mueller, and conga player John Ricco are also present, as well as a cameo from Milwaukee gospel quartet The Masonic Wonders. Several songs are from recordings by the perennial Milwaukee blues band Leroy Airmaster, in which singer/guitarist Bill Stone is prominently featured.

Steve Cohen does all of the front line singing, most of the harmonica playing, and also plays guitar on several songs.

Steve Cohen has been an important part of the Milwaukee area blues scene for 5 decades. He has been a part of numerous ensembles, playing prolifically since he started performing while still in high school, in 1969.

He has released 9 projects of his own and played as a sideman on dozens more.

He is the author of 5 harmonica instruction books published by Hal Leonard, and has played the harmonica parts for over a dozen other Hal Leonard harmonica play-along instruction books including Little Walter, Bob Dylan and most recently Muddy Waters.

As an educator, he taught blues history at UW Milwaukee for 5 years, and was associated with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for 3 years. He has had many private students.

He has worked as a booking agent under the auspices of the Blues Central Booking Agency which he created in the 1980’s, and has booked thousands of dates for hundreds of non-commercial bands and musicians, both local and national.

He has also worked as a DJ at WMSE, and has written music reviews for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal and the Shepard Express.

Both as a harmonica player and with his band, Steve has won a dozen WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) Awards, and he served on the WAMI board of directors for two different 3 year stretches.

Koch Marshall Trio - Toby Arrives

The Koch-Marshall Trio are American guitarist Greg Koch, his son Dylan Koch on drums and Hammond B3 specialist Toby Lee Marshall.

At the heart of this organ trio is a blues sensibility - but Koch's compositions are an amalgam of rock, funk, jazz and country served up with heavy grooves and dynamic improvisations delivered with no small dose of humor and occasional wild abandon.

The trio blends the explosive guitar manipulations of Greg, the groove-centric, power-pocket playing of his son Dylan on drums (who share many telepathic musical moments) and the glorious, Hammond organ stylings of the uber-talented Toby Marshall, Greg’s compositions are properly portrayed in the blues drenched, funk, chicken-fried, gospelly, jazz-rock panorama in which they were conceived. Their first release, “Toby Arrives” the first moments of their unexpected musical partnership captured at an extemporaneous jam session earlier in the year.

Milwaukee area blues heavyweight Steve Cohen triples on his unique and progressive style of blues/jazz harmonica, (sponsored by Hohner for 25 years) guitar and vocals. Guitarist Greg Koch is known internationally for his incredible guitar virtuosity. Greg is a globe trotting clinician for Fender, and his instruction books and DVDs for Hal Leonard are a hit,as are his many recordings. Kurt Koenig, bass and Bob Mueller on drums round out the core band. Additional guests include world class cult blues harmonica guru Jim Liban, keyboardists Susan Julian and Joel Freisinger, as well as John Ricco-congas, and the Masonic Wonders, a Gospel vocal group.

This is an eclectic, carefully selected batch of blues/r&b based tunes. Half are twisted originals that remain true to the spirit of the blues while extending the genre into uncharted territory. Covers include 60s crossover blues hits like Daydream, Givin It Up For Your Love and Crazy Mama, as well Little Village's "The Action". Let's not forget the spirited rendition of Erroll Garner's "Misty". Splendid musicianship abounds both in solos and ensemble work, as well as expressive vocals throughout. Possibly the best blues?album of the year.

13. Hey Godzilla (Radio Mix) [4:09]

With his latest release, Plays Well With Others, Greg Koch is impressive, as is the list of guest artists that join him for the soul-filled release. Along with Joe Bonamassa and Robben Ford, Crescent City pianist Jon Cleary, guitarist Paul Barrere, bassist Roscoe Beck, and drummer Brannen Temple appear alongside an already stellar band to produce an eclectic album, full of blues, soul, and R&B.

Equal parts Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago, Plays Well With Others, features fifteen stellar tracks. Among the many highlights are “Walk Before You Crawl” and “Spanish Wine,” which features the beautiful playing of pianist Jon Cleary. Robben Ford brings a jazz vibe to the album with “Sho Nuff” and “Whisky Rainstorm” is a tour of the blues, moving from Al Green to Albert Collins in the span of little more than three minutes. After spending time in the realm of organ-filled soul, “Hey Godzilla” proves that Koch and company sound just as good at edgier, rock-inspired blues.

There’s not much to dislike about the album. The band is great and the production is solid, and the songs are good. Not only are the lyrics creative and evocative, but the song forms are also not boring, and the bass lines are creative. To put it simply, it is great music.

A long out of print essential guitar rock classic that includes a deep, profound unreleased Bonus Track.

Greg “Gristle King” Koch is a legit true axemaster in every damn sense of the word who is highly respected in the guitar community and endorsed by Fender Guitars. A stellar prolific guitar player’s “guitarist” who shreds to the beat of a different drummer with a vast musical melting pot smorgasbord cacophony of linear guitar god brilliance. If you worship mind-blowing, serious guitar rock mojo, dig deep and smell the gristle.

Lets face it, Greg Koch is an insane musical genius and veritable maestro on the guitar who has composed his ultimate instrumental guitar symphony with the mega-awesome “Strats Got Your Tongue” disc. A bad-ass brilliant display of orgasmic six string gristle.
