Legendary producer Ralph Bass supervised this quickie session back in 1977, but it failed to see the light of day domestically until Delmark rescued it from oblivion. They did the blues world a favor: it's a worthwhile session, Bell storming through a mostly original setlist (the omnipresent Little Walter cover this time is "Everything's Gonna Be Alright"). Aron Burton and Sam Lay comprise the rhythm section, and son Lurrie contributes lead guitar. /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Heinz Sauer – saxophone legend and cornerstone of German jazz – was born in 1932 in Merseburg. Since 1960 he has been saxophonist and composer for the Jazz Ensemble of Hessicher Rundfunk in Frankfurt. From 1960 to 1978 he was a member of the Albert Mangelsdorff Quartet and Quintet, and in 1968 was a member of the German All Stars. In 1974 he formed his first own line-up, Voices. The obvious individuality and artistic intensity of his saxophone playing and his compositions have allowed Sauer to go his own individual way. For this he was recognized by the award of the Jazz Prize of the region of Hessen and in 1999 by the Albert Mangelssdorf Prize.

Recorded February 10th and 11th,1983 at Bunkerstudio, Bad Wildungen, FRG.

Louisiana Red (born Iverson Minter) was a flamboyant guitarist, harmonica player, and vocalist. He lost his parents early in life through multiple tragedies; his mother died of pneumonia a week after his birth, and his father was lynched by the Klu Klux Klan when he was five.
Red began recording for Chess in 1949, then joined the Army. After his discharge, he played with John Lee Hooker in Detroit for almost two years in the late '50s, and continued through the '60s and '70s with recording sessions for Chess, Checker, Atlas, Glover, Roulette, L&R, and Tomato, among others.

Louisiana Red moved to Hanover, Germany in 1981, and maintained a busy recording and performing schedule through the subsequent decades into the new millennium, his 21st century releases including 2001's Driftin' on Earwig, 2002's A Different Shade of Red on Severn, 2004's Bad Case of the Blues on Mojo Tone, 2005's No Turn on Red on Hightone and Hot Sauce on Red Lightnin', and 2008's Back to the Black Bayou (recorded in Norway with producer/guitarist Little Victor) on Ruf. He died in Germany in 2012 when his thyroid imbalance brought on a stroke. ~Ron Wynn

This is a companion disc to Honeyboy Edwards' autobiography of the same name. It features full-length performances along with interview segments that tell some of the great stories of the blues, particularly trenchant being Edwards' version of the night of Robert Johnson's death. Musical high points include several turns on Johnson material like "Walkin' Blues," "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Crossroads," the latter featuring some slashing slide work from Edwards. Carey Bell contributes some great harp to Edwards' lone guitar, and on other tracks Edwards is ably supported by Rick Sherry on harmonica and washboard. With his timing as idiosyncratic as ever, Edwards also brings a couple of fine originals to the table with "My Mama Told Me" and "Every Now and Then." A great lion-in-winter recording with more than its share of oddball quirks, this is one great listening experience. ~Cub Koda

Musicians: David Honeyboy Edwards - Guitar and Vocals; Carey Bell Harrington - Harmonica on tracks 1, 4, 5 ,6, 8, 10, 12 & vocals on track 14; Rick Sherry - Harmonica on track 2 & washboard on tracks 6, 15.

12. Reagan Is For The Rich Man (Live) (Feat. Louisiana Red) (2:49)

This is an unassuming album of straight-ahead Chicago harmonica blues, recorded in the early 1980s. It showcases Carey Bell's harp ability and clearly shows he belongs in the higher echelon of Chicago harp players. His supporting players include sons Lurie (guitar) and Carey Jr. (bass).

For me, the slow 12-bar burners are the highpoints on this album: "I Am Worried," "Easy to Love You," and "When a Woman Gets in Trouble." "I Am Worried" clocks in at 9+ minutes and features some outstanding guitar runs from son Lurie. The other songs, "Goin' on Main Street," "Heartaches and Pain" and "Train Ticket" are all up-tempo, danceable Chicago blues, and all feature trademark Bell harp. Billy Branch shows up for a harp duet with Carey on the last of the original 7 songs (originally released in Germany in 1982). "Tribute to Big Walter" is just that: Carey and Billy jamming alone on some riffs that would have made Big Walter Horton proud.

Two bonus tracks are included on this album. Both were recorded a year before the previous 7 and they sound like live recordings. "I Need You So Bad," the old Magic Sam nugget features signature Carey Bell harmonica, plus some wonderful guitar work from Lurie. "Man and the Blues" (the Buddy Guy classic), is another slow burner, features both Carey and Lurie handling lead duties.

This is a very good album, certainly above average. Carey Bell was one of Chicago Blues' greatest! ~Judy

East Blues Experience: East Blues Experience was founded in Berlin in early 1991 by singer, guitarist and songwriter Peter Schmidt, previously with Handarbeit. The band's founding line-up included bassist Rene Mosgraber and drummer Jürgen Schötz, who had previously played with Big Joe Stolle and Alexander Blume at Zenit and in the Intercity Blues Band. Shortly after the founding, Ronny Dehn switched to the drums and Jäcki Reznicek took over the bass. Reznicek used to play in Veronika Fischer's backing band, with Pankow and with Silly. In the same year their debut album "East Blues Experience" was released on Mara Records and they accompanied Luther Allison and Louisiana Red on a tour around Germany.

In 1993 East Blues Experience signed Carey Bell as a guest on their Good Understanding Tour, and the studio album "Good Understanding" with him was recorded in Prague. Further appearances with well-known bands, such as Uriah Heep and Golden Earring, followed and their appearances in 1994 at the Djurs Bluesland Festival in Randers, 1997 at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt (Main) and 1998 at the 15th Dresden Blues Festival made the band known nationally and internationally. In the beginning of 2000, East Blues Eexperience had brought a second guitarist into the band in the form of Axel Merseburger and the sound became increasingly rocky. Reznicek had since left the band and was replaced by Rainer Engelmann. In 2004 the band went on another successful tour through Germany and separated in spring 2005.

Carey Bell: His place on the honor roll of Chicago blues harpists long ago assured, Carey Bell truly came into his own in the '90s as a bandleader with terrific discs for Alligator and Blind Pig. He learned his distinctive harmonica riffs from the Windy City's very best (both Walters - Little and Big - as well as Sonny Boy Williamson II), adding his own signature effects for good measure (an otherworldly moan immediately identifies many of his more memorable harp rides). Born Carey Bell Harrington in the blues-fertile state of Mississippi, he was already playing the harp when he was eight and working professionally with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee, at 13. The older and more experienced Lee brought Carey with him to Chicago in search of steady musical opportunities in 1956. Gigs frequently proved scarce, and Carey eventually took up electric bass, playing behind Robert Nighthawk, Johnny Young, and his mentor Big Walter Horton.

Finally, in 1969, Bell made his debut album (on harp) for Delmark, and he was on his way. Bell served invaluable early-'70s stints in the bands of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, touring extensively and recording with both legends. Alligator Records has been responsible for much of Bell's best recorded work as a leader, beginning with a joint venture with Horton back in 1972. Four cuts by Bell on the first batch of Alligator's Living Chicago Blues anthologies in 1978 preceded his participation in the 1990 harmonica summit meeting Harp Attack!, which brought him into the studio with fellow greats James Cotton, Junior Wells, and Billy Branch. His solo set for Alligator, Deep Down, rates as his finest album. Bell has sired a passel of blues-playing progeny; best-known of the brood is mercurial guitarist Lurrie Bell. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Lurrie Bell was born on December 13, 1958, in Chicago. His famous father, harpist Carey Bell, had him working out on guitar as a wee lad. By 1977, he was recording with his dad and playing behind a variety of established stars, tabbed by many observers at the time as a sure star on the rise. But personal problems took their toll on his great potential; Bell's recorded output and live performances were inconsistent in the '80s and early '90s. Among the highlights of Bell's discography are three tracks in tandem with harpist Billy Branch under the Sons of Blues banner (Bell was a founding member of the band) from Alligator's first batch of 1978 Living Chicago Blues anthologies and 1984's Son of a Gun, a collaboration with his old man for Rooster Blues. Then there's his 1995 Delmark set Mercurial Son, as bizarre a contemporary blues album as you're likely to encounter. Bell followed Mercurial Son with the more straightforward 700 Blues in spring 1997; The Blues Had a Baby appeared two years later. Let's Talk About Love (2007) and The Devil Ain't Got No Music (2012) both appeared on Bell's own record label, Aria B.G. In 2013, he returned to Delmark with the release of Blues in My Soul, which celebrated the guitarist's straight-ahead Chicago blues roots. Three years later came Can't Shake This Feeling, also released on Delmark. ~Bill Dahl

Carey Bell Harrington (November 14, 1936 – May 6, 2007) was an American blues musician who played harmonica in the Chicago blues style. Bell played harmonica and bass guitar for other blues musicians from the late 1950s to the early 1970s before embarking on a solo career. Besides his own albums, he recorded as an accompanist or duo artist with Earl Hooker, Robert Nighthawk, Lowell Fulson, Eddie Taylor, Louisiana Red and Jimmy Dawkins and was a frequent partner with his son, the guitarist Lurrie Bell. Blues Revue called Bell "one of Chicago's finest harpists." The Chicago Tribune said Bell was "a terrific talent in the tradition of Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter.

Spike Ravenswood (born Uwe Gleich), grew up in Dresden in East Germany, at a time when communism was the law and oppression too often the norm. East Germany's government did not appreciate the blues. But Mr. Gleich would tune in foreign music stations on his tiny radio and listen. Before he was a blues guitarist and a music promoter, the simple sound of the blues signified a better life to him.

9. Slidin' Home (4:54)
10. Shake Your Money Maker (4:06)

Chicago Blues singer/guitarist John Littlejohn's reputation among his peers and blues aficionados is done an injustice by his meager recorded output as a bandleader. Littlejohn began making a name for himself around Gary, Ind., and Chicago in the early 1960s with his liquid-toned slide guitar work and impassioned singing; he worked as a sideman for Donny Hathaway and cut his first record as a leader in 1968. Never incorporating rock and Funk as his peers Buddy Guy or Son Seals did, his sound remained resolutely rooted in the Chicago Blues of the '50s and '60s. Littlejohn was a mainstay in the Windy City's Southside clubs, and he recorded sporadically, cutting around a half dozen records before his death in 1994.

Carey Bell started playing with his stepfather, piano player and vocalist Lovey Lee in Mississippi. In 1956 at age 19, came to Chicago with the Lovey Lee Blues Band. Played harmonica and bass guitar for other blues musicians from the late 1950s to the early 1970s before embarking on a solo career. Played with Muddy Waters on and off at least between late 1970 and 1974, and later with Willie Dixon's Chicago Blues All-Stars, among many others.

Personnel: John Littlejohn (vocals, guitar); Carey Bell (vocals, harmonica); Larry Burton (guitar); Willie Kent (bass); Casey Jones (drums, vocals).

Stormy Monday Band & Louisiana Red Meet Carey Bell - Live At 55

7. Leulen (5:12)
8. Woman Trouble (4:38)
9. Late Midnight (5:50)

Stormy Monday, based in the Ruhr district, are not just a band accompanying two American blues giants. They mould the music; they give shape to the songs. Ten years of experience playing the blues have enabled them to perform a Chicago style close to the roots. Their line up of a three piece horn section allows them to widen the boundaries towards the neighboring styles of popular Black music, to r&b, rock, funk and reggae.

It all began with "Ashima" which sort of forms the nucleus of these tracks. It is an old song of Red's, previously unrecorded. Stormy Monday were recording at Studio 55 and Red, who they had frequently toured with in recent years, was invited to sit in as a special guest. He was on tour with Carey Bell, so he brought him (and the harmonica) along to the record session. The unexpected result is not only a fine reggae version of "Ashima" but a complete album! All tracks were recorded live at the studio, just a few guitar solos and the horns were dubbed later.

Stormy Monday & Louisiana Red meet Carey Bell - this is the meeting of two outstanding blues men, as much rooted in the tradition as headed for the new, and a dynamic European band that has found a fresh and contemporary approach to the blues. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Berthold Klostermann

A short tour with Carey Bell was an exciting prospect. He was simply the best blues harmonica player and an effective, distinctive singer. The complete package. Not averse to the occasional tipple, he was a nice guy but a tough hustler ready and willing to do a recording deal. If he was unsure of the prospect of being backed by English musicians, a quick listen to the Bill Dicey album that had recently been recorded with guitarist and bandleader for the session, Richard Studholme, brought a series of appreciative nods - he was in safe hands - Richard had a particular affinity with harmonica players.

The original release was the first blues album to be released only on CD. Here, with some bonus tracks, is the best of two worlds - the original LP and some extra, classy material.

Booze Blues: The sorrow one occasionally feels when drunk. Usually occurs when one drinks when he/she is in a bad mood. The affected person will often be saddened by anything and/or everything wrong in that person's life, no matter how important or trivial (most often trivial). Often accompanied (but not remedied) by more drinking.

Hubert Sumlin - I Know You

[7:19] 9. I've Been Hurt
[3:21] 10. Mind Is Rambling
[3:05] 11. You My Best
[4:25] 12. Good Bye

This is arguably the first musically indispensable album that Hubert Sumlin has done since Howlin' Wolf died some 23 years ago. That isn't to say that he hasn't done some good albums before this, just that I Know You has a degree of urgency, coupled with remarkable ease, that makes it a real delight. The result is a record that compares very favorably with Wolf's London Sessions record as a mix of old and new. Sumlin will never sound like Wolf as a singer, but he can't help sounding like him in every other way, since it was Wolf's guitar on practically every cut after 1954; but he does his best with a limited voice and a hot guitar to deliver some superb electric blues. Whether he's acknowledging Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, or John Lee Hooker, or paying tribute to Wolf himself ("How Many More Years," in a killer interpretation), Sumlin sounds like he's having great fun grinding and crunching away on his instrument. He even turns in a surprisingly strong vocal and guitar performance on a familiar piece of subdued blues, "That's Why I'm Gonna Leave You." There is a little dross here -- Sumlin doesn't do all that well stepping into John Lee Hooker territory; but generally, I Know You is a record that should please any fan of the Wolf or Sumlin (or, for that matter, James or Reed), with two tracks, "I'm Not Your Clown" and "Smokestack" (based on guess which song), indispensable to fans of hot blues guitar. Playing with him are Sam Lay (drums) and Carrie Bell (harp), with Jimmy D. Lane on second guitar and David Krull at the piano and organ. ~Bruce Eder

~ Bill Dahl

Carey Bell is an effective and surprisingly versatile singer but it is his powerful harmonica that really stands out. One of the last of the major Chicago blues harpists, Bell (an alumnus of the Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon bands) had led his own groups for most of the previous 30 years when he came out with this disc. His longtime guitarist Steve Jacobs offers some concise and stinging comments but the leader is virtually the whole show on his CD, which finds him leading a tight six-piece group. Nothing too unusual occurs but the music definitely has plenty of spirit. ~Review by Scott Yanow
