Cathy Lemons & Johnny Ace - Lemonace

Year: 2010
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 60:22
Size: 139,6 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Full

1. Brand New Day (3:00)
2. Love Like A Fire (3:45)
3. Used To These Blues (5:38)
4. Sink Or Swim (4:54)
5. Shoot To Kill (8:02)
6. When Bad Luck Looks Good (3:56)
7. Gimme A Penny (6:03)
8. I Got It (3:10)
9. I'm Not The Woman I Used To Be (5:23)
10. Stay (4:41)
11. Get This Thing Off'a My Back (5:40)
12. Move On (6:05)

Even though veteran West Coast bassist Johnny Ace contributed to Cathy Lemons' 1997 solo release and the two have been frequent collaborators for some time, this is the first album where they share co-billing. Ace, not to be confused with the '50s R&B star, has supported dozens of classic blues and R&B musicians through the years to little acclaim, but has found a perfect partner with husky, sassy vocalist Lemons. The duo's debut effort is a rousing, rollicking affair that shifts from gutsy garage rocking to rugged, torchy blues. Even more impressive is the material - all but two tracks are originals, many based on driving bass licks such as the raw funk of "I Got It" and the opening double-time soul blast of "Brand New Day."

Lemons naturally takes most of the leads but Ace is a constant presence, delivering meaty basslines and the occasional duet or front vocal. It's a combustive combination that explodes early on with "Love Like a Fire," a punky soul jam with a propulsive joint vocal that's as fiery and live-sounding as a studio track can get. Guitarist Kid Andersen, who co-produces, contributes to a handful of songs, but most of the six-string work is handled by Pierre Le Corre. His taut, jagged solos mesh perfectly with the front couple, filling in the spaces but seldom hogging the spotlight.

Ace is prone to telling somewhat rambling stories as on "Sink or Swim" and the closing "Move On," an acquired taste that might work live, but is less intriguing on an album meant to be replayed. Lemons is a tough, soulful vocalist bearing some similarities to Bonnie Raitt, but with a plucky strut and delivery that are both playful and powerful. When she lets loose on the slow blues of "I'm Not the Woman I Used to Be" and "Gimme a Penny," she builds an intensity and momentum that are as impressive as the female blues greats who have influenced her, such as Big Mama Thornton, who previously recorded the latter tune.

Lemonace might be the first album from both Ace and Lemons as partners, but the decades of hard work that preceded it are evident in every blistering moment. One hopes this is the beginning of a fresh and fruitful career for this synergetic and searing partnership. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

San Francisco’s finest male/female duet-fronted band, The Lucky Losers serve up a road warrior's tale within a soulful '60s retro sound on their third album, Blind Spot to be released on Dirty Cat Records. Blind Spot is a primal call to awareness in the eye of an irresistible storm. Traveling through a winding soundscape of modern blues, vintage R&B, and Americana, Blind Spot presents unvarnished testimony to the fragile and fleeting state of our world. Caught between hope and catastrophe, veteran blues vocalists, Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz take a fearless ride into the unknown, witnessing the good, bad, and ugly of contemporary America through a fractured rear-view mirror.

Recorded at award-winning Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, Blind Spot continues The Lucky Losers' long-standing relationship with acclaimed producer/engineer, Kid Andersen. Bringing back the vanishing art of vocal duets, the album is solely comprised of original material created by Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz alongside their illustrious and multi-talented songwriting partner, Danny Caron (Charles Brown). Blind Spot features scintillating musical contributions from six-time Blues Music Award nominated guitarist, Kid Andersen, IBMA Momentum Award winning violinist Annie Staninec (Rod Stewart), 2018 BMA nominated saxophonist, Nancy Wright, and Laura Chavez, listed as one of the “Top 50 Sensational Female Guitarists” by Guitar Player Magazine.

Male/Female blues and roots duets!. A vocally rich, harp infused, eclectic album with highly personalized covers of rare classics plus originals.

Cathy Lemons and Phil Berkowitz, as the Lucky Losers, take a modern approach to classic blues and R&B songs and combine compelling originals with rarely recorded covers. The outstanding “A Winning Hand,” produced by Kid Andersen, includes guest artists such as Steve Freund, 2015 International Blues Challenge Best Guitarist winner Ben Rice, and Andersen himself. Far from a simple case of two solo acts teaming up for a combined effort, “A Winning Hand” is a 'duets' album in the truest sense, with a give and take that allows each artist to draw out the best in the other. As Cathy pushes toward earthiness and grit, Phil pulls toward sophistication and tradition, creating a mild tension that keeps the listener focused on the ongoing dialogue between the two. The gentle back-and-forth brings the storyline of each song to the forefront.

The album's wide range of influences include Chicago and Texas blues, Stax/Volt-styled soul, blues rock, jazz, and New Orleans funk. Of its twelve tracks, half are originals: three by Cathy, and three by Phil and collaborator Danny Caron. The remaining six are a mix of older blues and roots songs ranging from Allen Toussaint's incisive "What Is Success" to Jimmy Rogers' meat-and-potatoes "What Have I Done" and even a funk-laced jaunt through the late period Dylan masterpiece "What Was It You Wanted."

CATHY LEMONS is a blues-singing legend who has performed regularly in the Bay Area for 25 years. She has been described as “the finest light-skinned female blues vocalist in the U.S.” (Real Blues, 2010) with "a velvety and hypnotic voice resonant of a female Howlin’ Wolf” (Fulltimeblues, 2010). Hailing from Dallas, Cathy honed her chops with Anson Funderburgh, performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and has worked with some of the greatest names in blues, including John Lee Hooker, Tommy Castro, and Ron Thompson." " Her 2014 release “Black Crow” on Vizztone was a Downbeat magazine “Winners' Pick.”

PHIL BERKOWITZ is a charismatic San Francisco-based harmonica player and vocalist who has brought his unique, energetic music to audiences for more than 17 years. He has mastered many different types of blues, a fact that's exemplified by his diverse repertoire. Phil’s last two CDs, “Louis’ Blues” and “All Night Party,” were met with critical praise. He has toured, performed, and recorded with a variety of top blues and jazz musicians such as Danny Caron (Charles Brown's musical director), Duke Robillard, Sean Carney, and Billy Branch.

Cathy Lemons - Black Crow

Size: 118,5 MB
Time: 50:56
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2014
Styles: Blues Rock, Blues Country
Art: Front

01. I'm A Good Woman (3:49)
02. Ain't Gonna Do It (4:36)
03. Black Crow (5:05)
04. Hip Check Man (5:07)

07. The Big Payback (6:12)
08. I'm Going To Try (5:47)
09. Texas Shuffle (3:47)
10. The Devil Has Blue Eyes (4:39)

Originally from Dallas, Texas, Cathy Lemons has been performing regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 25 years. She honed her skills with Anson Funderburgh, played with Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker, Tommy Castro, Ron Thompson, Kid Andersen, Steve Freund and a host of others. In other words, Lemons has performed with the best of the best and is going strong. With a voice that has the touch of velvet she gets her point across with passion and raw emotional power. The band is tight, and the added presence of special guests Doug James, Kid Andersen and Volker Strifler supplying their special touches here and there are like the cherry on the already sweet ice-cream sundae. Six of the disc’s ten tunes were written by Lemons showing her extraordinary talents as a songwriter. Blues, R&B, Memphis soul, funk and a touch of gospel blend seamlessly for a sound that is powerful, yet soothing on the ear and absolutely delightful. There is a beauty and grace in Cathy Lemons that reaches far deeper than the surface but, don’t let her appearance fool you, this woman, young and beautiful as she might be has the ability to hurt you without even trying. The blues has a history of loves lost and found and Cathy Lemons knows the score, perhaps better than most in some respects. This woman has earned everything she’s got, and earned it legitimately. This is a woman who could steal your heart in an instant. One thing is certain…once you hear her, you will be a fan for life. This is music with a timeless quality that will have all the hitting power twenty years down the road that it does today. In this day and age when so much of what crosses my desk is some strange blues/rock combination, too often more rock than blues, this disc is refreshing as a glass of cold mountain spring water. This one is a keeper…a purchase you will not regret. – Bill Wilson
