Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado: Talent, dedication and perseverance As this band enters its seventeenth year, they really seem to be on the verge to a success that will open some new doors, in new territories. And with all the hard work they put into this project, they surely deserve it.

In 2003, singer and guitarist Thorbjørn Risager asked some of his favourite musicians to join him in a brand new band. The picked the band name ”Thorbjørn Risager Blue 7” and started playing round Denmark. A year later they recorded their first album, ”Live 2004”, and in 2005 they met their current agent who also started working with their CD promotion, in connection with the release of their second album, ”From The Heart”, which already got considerable media recognition. BluesWax, a well-respected US publication, used the headline ”Next big name in blues: Thorbjorn” and the epic quote ”Risager has songwriting skills that match his larger-than-life voice” is from that review. The same magazine wrote about the next album ”Here I Am”: Sometimes a singer’s voice just stands out and forces you to listen. Take one part Ray Charles, one part Bob Seger, and one part Joe Cocker and you may have the vocal instrument of Denmark’s Thorbjørn Risager.

By then they had been signed by the Danish label Cope Records, run by the band’s trumpet player. A few albums later, they made a deal with French blues/roots label Dixiefrog, and in 2014 they secured a record deal with Ruf Records, based in Germany but with a very strong position in the international blues world. The same year, before the release of the multi-award-winning album ”Too Many Roads”, they decided to add the band name ”The Black Tornado” – to signify that this is a REAL band and not some random musicians that back up a vocalist. They were also hoping that this new name would be a bit easier to google, for all the listeners that heard the band’s music being played on international radio stations.

Parallel to writing, recording and releasing new material with 12 – 18 months’ interval, they have kept touring all over Europe, plus a tour to Canada and a spot at Asia’s biggest blues festival Mahindra Blues in Mumbai, where they shared the stage with Buddy Guy. They play 100 gigs per year, and they have performed in 21 countries. Remarkably enough, only two musicians have quit the band since the start in 2003 and they have worked with the same agency, Westman Music, since 2005. This is a hard-working band, and they really stick together through thick and thin. They are united through their talent, their dedication and their perseverance!

There are no right or wrong answers with music. It’s subjective and everyone brings their own preferences and past experiences to the listening process. So what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. Having gotten that out of the way, Tinsley Ellis does blues rock right and Ice Cream in Hell is positively correct.

Ellis is a guitarist’s guitarist, with 17 solo albums to his name, but not enough name recognition. I’m not sure if Ice Cream in Hell will address that marketing challenge, but in a perfect world, it would, because it’s a phenomenal album. Where Ellis’ 2018 album, Winning Hand, featured the same high-quality guitar playing, there was something a bit staid about it all, like he was striving for perfection at the expense of emotion. Ice Cream in Hell has guitar playing that’s frighteningly close to perfect, but what seals the album is the passion beneath the guitar playing.

Ellis’ guitar work is so good, it’s easy to ignore his singing, which is charmingly ordinary. I have no idea what it’s like to have talent, but I imagine it’s very easy to hide behind it. If I could play half as well as Ellis, you’d hear me jamming on every street corner and subway car from here to Maryland. Ellis could just as easily lean on his guitar prowess, but he doesn’t, putting a lot of work into his vocals. On the title track, he sounds delightfully ragged, like he recorded the track after doing a live show. It’s bluesy and brave as anything.

And while we’re on the subject of the title track, that song is surprisingly pretty. Ellis’ guitar hops through the track with lines that have that bright Allman Brothers feel, but also a dark gritty bluesiness. Keyboardist/co-producer Kevin McKendree sets a beautiful table for Ellis, on this and each of the album’s tracks. The two musicians have a great relationship, obviously listening to each other and playing off each other, while maintaining every song’s structure. There are plenty of gorgeous musical passages and licks, but the two always turn back to the song.

I was blown away by how fluent Ellis is in so many styles. The songs, all Ellis originals, sound familiar. He has his own takes on blues rock classics, but his ability to nail all of those licks we know so well, while still preserving his own muscular playing, which lies firmly in the Albert King/Stevie Ray Vaughan camp, consistently impressed me. “Sit Tight Mama” has Ellis playing slide in the style of Hound Dog Taylor. “Evil Till Sunrise” recalls Jimi Hendrix’s “Stone Free.” “Everything and Everyone” features a Carlos Santana sound. Ellis isn’t stealing licks or trying to present himself as someone he’s not. He’s just paying tribute to his inspirations.

If you’re a blues rock fan and aren’t familiar with Ellis’ work, this is a great place to check in. Ice Cream in Hell is blues rock from a master at the height of his power, vocally and instrumentally. Ellis showcases monster tone, vibrato that feels like an earthquake, and all-around tasteful playing. He is always the right answer. The Review: 9.5/10 ~Blues Rock Review

Some shows are so momentous, they pass into rock ‘n’ roll folklore. When Gary Moore stepped onto the stage of London’s Islington Academy on December 2nd, 2009, it was a true one-off, showcasing one of blues-rock’s biggest names in an intimate club setting. Nobody in the sell-out crowd that night suspected the great Irish bluesman was close to the end. But when Moore passed away fourteen months later, aged just 58, the show took on added poignancy, cherished as one of his last stands, kept alive in the memories of those who attended. Now, a decade later, the release of Live From London on Mascot/Provogue resurrects the much-missed Irishman, bringing his blazing talents back into the spotlight, catching the sparks of that night in the capital, and bottling a performance that stands amongst Moore’s very best.

Fun-loving R&B singer/songwriter David Brinston was born in Marks, Mississippi in 1959. He grew up performing gospel with his brothers and sisters, and in his early thirties he emerged with his own solo material, signing with Memphis, Tennessee label Jomar Records. Throughout the early '90s he scored several regional hits, with his biggest hit being 1993's "Two Way Love Affair." With a style informed by such soul figureheads as Al Green and Tyrone Davis, Brinston wrote and recorded songs at a furious clip, releasing new albums for various labels almost annually throughout the mid-'90s, 2000s, and beyond. Highlights were many, including the party-loving atmosphere of both 2001's Fly Right and 2008's Party Time. Along with touring the circuit of Southern summer festivals, Brinston would stay active into the 2010s with his irreverent and celebratory R&B styles, releasing a collection of hits in 2014 and Sidepiece Motel, an album of brand-new material, in 2017. ~Fred Thomas

13. Scream In The Night (2:46)

Candye Kane is a big-voiced blues singer with a twist. Though they are mostly credited as originals, the tunes are familiar from other blues, R&B, and jump blues compositions. The differences lie in Kane's lyrics and in her enthusiasm in singing them. The former adult film star stakes out a pan-sexual stance that she expounds lustily. Jack Tempchin's "Who Do You Love?" finds her endorsing homosexuality, a ménage à trois, and prostitution, and assuring her listeners that God does, too.

Her own "(Hey Mister!) She Was My Baby Last Night" portrays an unexpected combination in a romantic triangle. In "For Your Love," Kane lists a series of sexual fantasy characters ranging from "a dominatrix with a whip up above" to "a White House intern." And "Let's Commit Adultery" states its position in its title. The backing band, which occasionally features Dave Alvin and Marcia Ball, is excellent, but the distinctive element in the mix is Kane's lusty persona. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

Cousin to the late blues ballad singer Chuck Willis, Robert "Chick" Willis is primarily beloved for his ribald, dozens-based rocker "Stoop Down Baby." The guitarist cut his original version in 1972 for tiny La Val Records of Kalamazoo, MI, selling a ton of 45s for the jukebox market only (the tune's lyrics were way too raunchy for airplay).

Willis left the military in 1954, hiring on as valet and chauffeur to cousin Chuck, then riding high with his many R&B hits for OKeh Records. At that point, Chick's primary role on the show was as a singer (he made his own vinyl debut in 1956 with a single, "You're Mine," for Lee Rupe's Ebb Records after winning a talent contest at Atlanta's Magnolia Ballroom), but he picked up the guitar while on the road with his cousin (Chick cites Guitar Slim as his main man in that department).

When Chuck died of stomach problems in 1958, Willis soldiered on, pausing in Chicago to work as a sideman with slide guitar great Elmore James. A few obscure 45s ("Twistin' in the Hospital Ward," cut for Alto in 1962, sounds promising) preceded the advent of "Stoop Down Baby," which Willis has freshened up for countless sequels ever since (he developed the song by teasing passersby with his ribald rhymes while working in a carnival variety show). Risqué material remained a staple of Willis's output in recent years. He cut several albums for Ichiban, notably 1988's Now!, Footprints in My Bed in 1990, and Back to the Blues in 1991. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

"Mr. Blues: The Best Of...So Far" is the first ever "best of" collection on blues legend Chick Willis. This 17-track set collects Chick's most popular songs (Stoop Down Baby Let Your Daddy See, Mother Fuyer, I'm The Son, Bootie Call), best recordings (Hattie, Mr. Blues, 1,2,3,4,5 Shots Of Whiskey, etc.) plus new and previously unreleased tracks, including the new hit The New Hucklebuck.

The great Chicago bluesman Luther Allison lived by a simple philosophy that he was happy to share (“Leave your ego, play the music, love the people”). Now, twenty-three years after Luther’s passing, the great man would surely be thrilled to hear Bernard Allison‘s Songs From The Road, and proud to find that his ferociously talented son is sworn to the same mission, bringing soul-soaked, all-guns-blazing blues to audiences who need it more than ever.

Songs From The Road is a live snapshot so raw and real that hearing it feels like hanging off the security barrier of Dortmund’s Musiktheater Piano club when Bernard and his crack-squad band hit town last October 23rd. With an A-list crew on-hand – and a dynamic mix from industry legend Jim Gaines this immersive recording catches every last flash of virtuosity, bead of sweat and drop of atmosphere. Since he embarked on his acclaimed solo career with 1990’s The Next Generation, Bernard’s studio catalogue has been heavy with highlights, and that night in Germany, every fan in the house got something off their wish-list.

This prolific songwriter reminded us that his recent output is his strongest to date, with five cuts from last year’s acclaimed Let It Go. But Bernard is happy to embrace his past glories, too, on a setlist that spans from 1998’s Times Are Changing to 2015’s In The Mix – and gives long-standing fans a treat with Let’s Try It Again, borrowed from his father’s classic 1984 album, Life Is A Bitch. You might know the songs – but you don’t know these interpretations. With Bernard leading the lineup on vocals and searing lead guitar, backed by Dylan Salfer (guitar), George Moye (bass), Mario Dawson (drums) and José James (sax/percussion), this is a live band whose chemistry lets them stretch out and shake up these classic songs.

On Songs From The Road, the result is a glorious exchange of energy between band and crowd – and evidence that Luther’s old philosophy is burning brighter than ever. “Our shows aren’t like going to the movies and staring at the big screen,” Bernard considers. “We’re there for the people to enjoy each other’s stories for the evening.”

Doctor Ross:
Doctor Ross (real name Charles Isaiah Ross) was born in Tunica, MS on Oct. 1925 and died on May 1993 in Flint, Michigan. He was a one-man Band, played guitar, harp and drums.
He learned harp at the age of nine and was performing with Willie Love and on radio stations in Arkansas and Mississippi in the 30´s. In the US Army, he made a paramedical training – therefore he got the name “Doctor”. Later he appeared at King Biscuit Time Show with his Jump and Live Band and also played as a one-man band act in the 50´s and 60´s.
He started recording music 1952 and recorded for the Chess Label, one year later for the legendary Label Sun Records in Memphis. For this Label, he recorded “Country Clown” and “Boogie Disease”, then he moved to Flint, Michigan to work in an auto factory. He was a left-handed guitar player and played in open G-tuning.
Later he recorded for different local Labels before he recorded in the middle of the 60´s for the Testament-Label. After that, he was a welcome guest on different Folk and Blues festivals in the US and Europe (especially at the American Folk Blues Festival 1965 and the Montreux Jazz Festival). He recorded a lot more CD´s. Some of the best are on Munich Records, Atlantic and his last CD on JSP.
The roots of his raw, Mississippi Delta Blues Style, was influenced by John Lee Hooker and John Lee “Sonny Boy” Williamson – but he created his own sound with boogie rhythms and supple harp riffs.
The recording on this CD were made during a tour with Archie Edwards in Greece. On this Live-CD, he recorded great traditional Blues titles like “Biscuit Bakin’ Mama” or “Good morning little Schoolgirl”, but also some songs of his own, like his hit “Chicago Breakdown”.

Archie Edwards:
Archie L. Edwards was born September 4th 1918 and died June 18th 1998. He was a Piedmont Blues Guitar Player, who played several decades and worked with great blues musicians like Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James or John Jackson.
One of his great songs are “The road is rough and rocky” and “I called my baby long Distance”. In the late 50´s he owned a barbershop, where he helped blues musicians to start their career. His style is the old Piedmont style or East Virginia Blues. He was born on a farm near Union Hall, Virginia. He had to share his first guitar with his brothers. He was inspired by Blind Boy Fuller and Blind Lemon Jefferson.
He worked at a sawmill, but he still played music around the camp, where he worked at daytime, but on evening he played at house parties in the 30´s. Then he went to New Jersey, where he worked by chauffeuring and cooking.
During World War II, Edwards served in the military police. In the postwar years, he worked in his own barbershop in Washington D.C. in 1959. But he also played together with Mississippi John Hurt, but also they both had a relationship with Skip James.
He worked with Hurt until his death in 1966 for which he wrote the song “The road is rough and rocky”. After Hurts dead, Archie played at music festivals and in local Clubs. He joined also John Jackson, John Cephs and Phil Wiggins.
He formed the group “The travelling Blues Workshop” together with Flora Molton and Mother Scott. 1982 he joined the American Folk Blues Festival for a tour in Europe and recorded for the L+R Label. When he came back, he toured with Flora Molton and Eleonor Ellis in the US.
Archie died 1998 in Seat Pleasant, Maryland in the age of 79. After his death the CD “Toronto Sessions” was released, which was recorded in 1986 in Canada.
He toured with Doc Ross Greece, where this CD was recorded.

The Paladins are one of the trailblazing pioneers of the California roots and rockabilly scene that took off in the 80s. The band formed in the late 70’s in San Diego when Dave Gonzalez and Thomas Yearsley were still in High School. They went on to play countless shows around the world and have record nine full-length albums, including “New World” released in 2017.

Recorded in August of 2019, and clocking in with over 90 minutes of music, Live at the Belly Up finds the band in fine form delivering a set that spans their entire catalog. From the opener “Power Shake” to the closing notes of “Mercy,” Live at the Belly Up proves The Paladins are still at the top of their game.

Recorded live on the West Side of Chicago in 1976, this disc is an excellent document of Littlejohn's live show. What his husky, passionate vocal delivery lacks in grace, it makes up in honesty. And his guitar and slide playing are both strong. Much of the disc focuses on slow blues weepers, with the exception of a few jump tunes, like Littlejohn's own "Kiddeo". A smoky, deep-blue piece of work. /Tim Sheridan, AllMusic

Chicago's blues diva wraps her four octave muscle around 14 roots originals stoked by talented musicians Albert King's and Albert Collins' rhythm sections. A tireless bandleader on the tough Chicago club circuit, Liz describes her blues as "about an indomitable fighting spirit that makes people keep facing adversity... in my show and on this CD I'm telling people, 'You're not by yourself... Get out there and do what you have to do because somebody understands.'"

Look at Me displays the wide range of Liz's lyric ideas and musical arrangements, including the hard-driving Life Sentence of the Blues, and I'm On a Rocket Tonight, the R&B groove of Everybody's Breakin' Up, the gospel-tinged Look In Your Heart, and the inspirational Somebody You'll Win, the coquetish humor of Fish Food and I'm So Blue, the intensely political blues of Trouble Times, and the forlorn Shoulda Been A Love Song and Gone Away, Problem Solved, plus four other hip-shakin', soulful grooves.

14. Nothing But The Devil (3:41)
15. Alexis (4:05)
16. Barley And Grape Rag (3:38)

A quickie compilation issued a few months after Rory Gallagher's untimely death in June of 1995, this generous collection assembles 16 tracks that show the deeper blues - as opposed to harder blues-rocking - side of the Irish guitarist. At the time it was issued, IRS only had rights to seven of Gallagher's albums, so there is a large bulk of material that might have fit the concept that could not be included. Additionally, this was released before Gallagher's catalog was overhauled in 1999 for CD, so the sound quality here is not as full and pristine as later versions of the same tunes.

Out of print after IRS' demise, this is still a solid representation of the guitarist's diverse blues approaches. The songs are noted with the style they represent Texas, Chicago, ragtime, bottleneck, Appalachian, etc. and even though the sequencing seems random, the album does show Gallagher's amazing diversity. Covers of Lightnin' Slim, Blind Boy Fuller, Tony Joe White, Sonny Boy Williamson, Son House, and the traditional "Bullfrog Blues" (mistakenly credited to Gallagher as opposed to William Harris, the tune's typically accepted writer) share space next to originals whose influences are obvious.

From a blues-rocker who had taste and class even when tearing through his barnstorming material at full volume, this music is reasonably well selected, especially since the compilers did not have access to his entire catalog. The disc is worth seeking out, especially for blues fans, since there are no other collections that focus exclusively on Gallagher's bluesier aspects. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Studebaker John Grimaldi was born in an Italian-American section of Chicago and started playing harmonica at age 7. Under the spell of music he heard on Maxwell Street, Chicago’s famed blues melting pot, Grimaldi began performing as Studebaker John and the Hawks in the ‘70s. The band name referenced the Studebaker Hawk, a car Grimaldi still owns today, and was also intended as a tribute to his friend, J.B. Hutto and the Hawks. John began playing guitar after a life-changing experience of seeing Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers perform. “…Hound Dog started playing, hitting notes that sent chills up and down my spine. He was versatile and powerful and would play rhythm as well as leads. I left there knowing what I wanted to do. I had to play slide guitar.”

In 1979 after playing at various Chicago clubs, John records his first record, Straight No Chaser, released on Retread Records.

Born in Columbus, GA, in 1953, blues guitarist/vocalist Robert Cray has--along with Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan--been credited with helping to create the blues "renaissance" of the 1980s. He began his music career in 1979 and has won three Grammy awards, with his 1986 album "Strong Persuader" selling over one million copies.

Cray's father was a career military man, so although Cray was born in Columbus, GA, he was raised in areas as varied as Virginia, California and Germany due to his father's various postings over the years, but the family finally settled in Tacoma, WA, in 1968. He had begun to study piano while his family was living in Germany, and was musically influenced by such artists as Ray Charles and Sam Cooke. He became a fan of The Beatles and eventually switched his choice of instruments from piano to guitar (a lucky meeting with actor John Belushi resulted in Cray's getting a part in the film National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) as a member of the band Otis Day and the Knights). Cray eventually formed his own band and in 1978 signed a contract with Tomato Records, coming out the next year with the album "Who's Been Talkin'?". Tomato didn't release it until 1980 and it didn't sell well, so Cray switched to Hightone Records and in 1983 released the well-received album "Bad Influence" His next album, "False Accusations", didn't break any sales records--although it was favorably reviewed by music critics--but in 1985 he released his breakthrough album, "Showdown!", which he recorded with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland. It garnered him a Grammy and sold a quarter-million copies. The next year he went over to Mercury Records, where he released what many believe to be his best album, "Strong Persuader", which got him his second Grammy.

Cray embarked on a worldwide tour, playing in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. He appeared in the rock documentary Chuck Berry Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll (1987) and in 1989 released his album "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", another million-seller that resulted in his third Grammy. His follow-up album, "Midnight Stroll", saw him move away from the blues somewhat and get more into soul and R&B, but it didn't alienate his blues fans. In 1991 he appeared in a concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Jimmy Vaughan and pianist Johnny Johnson and later that year released his double album, "24 Nights", which contained his performances at the Royal Albert Hall.

The man with that soulful and smoky voice, long-time partner of Texan Mike Morgan, has done it again! He's surprising the blues community with another GREAT record. The musicians were hand-picked in the Dallas area; the recordings were made at Billy Horton's famous 'Fort Horton Studio' near, Austin. Recorded the old way, live with all guys playing in one room, at the same time. Lee knows how to sing the blues. His repertoire includes rural styles as well as the soul of the big city. He is my favrite white singer. And this album is moving. A well-balanced mixture of originals, and covers, performed with energy and passion. I love it! Traditional style blues at its very best.

Joe Hill Louis is a highly regarded Memphis blues artist whose career never really took off nationally. Despite this he was very famous around Memphis and recorded a considerable body of work. Essentially a one-man-band. He sang, played guitar, blew harmonica all with added percussion making one of the most exciting and danceable sounds of 50s R&B. He was a pioneer of distorted and over amplified guitar which can be heard on one of his most famous and influential recordings, "Boogie In The Park". And Boogie is what you'll do when you listen to this fantastic collection. Also featured are some rare recordings from labels like Checker, Meteor, Rockin' and Big Town.

b. John Grimaldi, 5 November 1952, Chicago, Illinois, USA. Growing up in Chicago, Grimaldi’s father played guitar and he heard live performances by several noted blues masters including Howlin’ Wolf, J.B. Hutto, Little Walter, Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson. He taught himself to play harmonica and guitar, building his style on these artists but swiftly developing a distinctive manner. In the 70s he formed a band and adopted his stage name in reference to a prized car he owned, a 1963 Studebaker Silver Hawk. Meanwhile, Grimaldi maintained employment on construction sites, playing the blues at night in Chicago’s clubs. Grimaldi recorded in the late 70s with Robert ‘Mojo’ Elem, Mojo Boogie (1978), and his own-name debut came in the mid-80s. However, the album was not released in the USA until the mid-90s. Meanwhile, Grimaldi had secured a recording contract with Blind Pig Records that soon brought his hard-edged no-nonsense playing to a wider audience. In 2004 he made his mainstream solo debut, releasing Between Life & Death on the Avanti label (an earlier acoustic release was only available from the artist’s own website).

Grimaldi’s slide guitar playing is powerful and exciting as is his harmonica work. His singing, while not as vital as his instrumental work is also interesting, especially when he performs his own compositions. These songs, while couched in traditional form are contemporary in content and attitude. ~AMG

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Lightnin Slim (real name Otis Hicks) was born in Louisiana in 1913 and was a pioneer and first prominent exponent of the Swamp Blues style. He came to recording relatively late in life, doing his first sessions in his early 40s and recording his best-known work during the late 1950s and early 60s, before retreating from the business until being re-discovered and brought back to performing in the early 1970s. His music became a significant influence on British artists during the 60s blues boom. Swamp blues, focused in the clubs of Baton Rouge, is a laid-back but highly rhythmic blues style, influenced by Cajun music, and which the book Music USA: A Rough Guide states is characterised by eerie echo, shuffle beats, tremolo guitars, searing harmonica and sparse percussion. This great-value 46-track 2-CD set comprises all the titles which Lightnin Slim recorded for the Feature, Ace and Excello labels during these years, including the only R&B chart hit of his career Rooster Blues. He is accompanied on these recordings by a variety of other Louisiana musicians, most notably the harmonica player Lazy Lester. This collection offers an entertaining insight into the music of a highly individual artist as well as a distinctive strand of regional blues.

I've been in the game a long time, but I've always considered myself a student, says G. Love. Finishing this album with Keb Mo' felt like graduation. Recorded in Nashville with a slew of special guests including Robert Randolph, Marcus King, and Roosevelt Collier, The Juice is indeed diploma-worthy. Co-produced and co-written with GRAMMY-winning icon Keb Mo', it s an electrifying collection, one that tips its cap to more than a century of blues greats even as it offers its own distinctly modern pop spin on the genre and solidifies his place in music history as a genre-bending pioneer with a sound The New York Times described as a new and urgent hybrid and NPR called a musical melting pot. G. Love's lyrics are both personal and political here, artfully balancing his appreciation for the simple joys in life with his obligation to speak out for justice and equality, and his performances are suitably riotous and rousing to match, with infectious call-and-response hooks and funky sing-along choruses at every turn. Easy as it is to succumb to cynicism these days, the songs on 'The Juice' refuse, insisting instead on hope and determination in the face of doubt and despair. I've never been the kind of guy who thinks he s going to change the world with his guitar, reflects G. Love. But maybe I can write the kind of songs that give strength and encouragement to the people who are out there doing the work to make this planet a better place. Those are the people I want to lift up with my music.

10. Funny How Time Slips Away (4:28)

Here We Go Again is Waylon’s third album with Rabadash, and for a change, the native Louisianan wanted to explore his Blues side with some of his original songs. “I call it blues with a Cajun accent,” laughs label owner John Autin. It was recorded and produced by Autin at his studios in New Orleans with musical guests Johnny Sansone, Josh Garrett, and Autin on keys. John called on Benny Turner, brother of Freddie King, and other more Blues-based musicians to help flesh out the sound. “Waylon’s happy tenor voice, and fiddle playing doesn’t belie a down, and dirty blues feel, but I think in a way we have created something quite new and interesting and unequivocally “WAYLON.”

Songs that talk about bad luck on “Smoke Signals,” personal decisions “Fail, Fail, Fail” and time sliding away, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” are all on Here We Go Again and the gumbo rue magic is in Waylon’s fiddle and tenor vocals. He is always working on expanding his sounds through guitar pedals to create different textures in his music. Everyone loves a steamboat whistle sound from a fiddler, right? His thoughts on “The Riverboat Song”: “I’ve seen the steamboats pass by the Riverwalk in New Orleans, and that whistle has always intrigued me. It’s a very loud, obnoxious sound, but it gets the job done to warn people of the passing of the steamboat.”

Waylon’s influences run wild like the Mississippi River from Cajun to Swamp Pop, blues to rock to country, but not many know he started as a drummer playing the old country music. Then one fateful night, when he was a kid, he saw Bob Wills on TV with fiddler Johnny Gimble, and down the road, the young Thibodeaux went; “I wish I’d had the chance to tell him how much he influenced me.” Then he started to dig around a little more, and he discovered Stephan Grappelli from Paris and Rufus Thibodeaux (no relation) of Neil Young’s band, then up to Nashville for some Conway Twitty then back to Pete Fountain in NOLA.

Harmonica ace Mark Hummel jumps into his “Wayback Machine” to take us on a trip back to the sounds of Bluebird Records, the noted blues label who produced some of the most acclaimed recordings of post-war Chicago of the 1930-40s. Tracks originally recorded by the likes of Tampa Red, Sonny Boy Williamson, Arthur Crudup, Jazz Gillum, Eddie Boyd, and Robert Nighthawk, sit alongside two of Hummel’s own compositions and one from bassist RW Grigsby. All run together nicely without any disruption in flow between the older and the new.

The musicianship on the album is bar none outstanding. Recorded at Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studios in San Jose, you know right away that the tracks featured are going to be brought to their utmost excellence with top shelf artists. Aside from Hummel blowing terrific harp, Grigsby providing bass on a number and Andersen on bass, Billy Flynn and Rusty Zinn provide guitar work, and Alex Petersen on drums The Deep Basement Shakers, pianist Aaron Hammerman and Dave Eagle on percussion perform on thirteen of the selections, and guitarist/vocalist Joe Beard appears on two.

Mark Hummel has put together yet another recording of merit. No surprise, he has been doing just that for more than three decades now and his output keeps gaining more momentum every time out. Wayback Machine brings focus on some of the brightest stars of the blues past, and puts them right back in front of us again where they belong always. ~Greg Johnson

King Curtis once recorded a groovy tune on which he described and demonstrated the recipe for "Memphis Soul Stew" ("a pound of fatback drums," "a half pint of horns," "a pinch of organ," etc.). Midnight in Memphis is like a Memphis Blues Stew seasoned with chunks of soul; it combines every tasty ingredient to be found in both the blues and soul cookbooks. Co-producers Ron Levy (an aficionado of the Memphis sound) and Willie Mitchell (one of the creators of that sound) work with guitarist/vocalist Shannon (a regular on the current Memphis scene) to create one of the strongest contemporary soul-blues albums of the decade.

On cuts like the slow-burner "The Feeling Is Gone," the sexual epic "The Clock," and the knockout "Size 12 Shoes," Shannon's gritty vocals convey so much commitment and authority as to enthrall the listener, especially when the CD is played loud as it obviously was meant to be. Shannon hit the ground running on his debut album Break the Ice. On Midnight in Memphis he soars. /Steve Hoffman, AllMusic
