One of Detroit's finest upcoming Blues/Soul singers Tosha Owens, teams up with Producer/Guitarist Brett Lucas for an exquisite album of heartfelt songs called Wrong Side of Right. Together they wrote all of the songs except for two choice covers. One is a powerhouse version of Janis Joplin's "Half Moon," which appeared on her Pearl album. The other cover featured is by none other than the great Ray Charles. His song “Ain't That Love” has been stripped down and performed with all the vigor of a late-night barrelhouse juke joint.
Many of the songs deal with Tosha's own experiences of finding Mr. Wrong with the impression that he's Mr. Right. The first track says it all with "You Ain't Right." She sings the truth with "though you don't treat right, I love you with all my might, oh baby you ain't right!"
Now not all of her dilemma's in life are from being mislead by the opposite sex as she states with the title track "Wrong Side of Right." She admits with full responsibility that "I let the bad ones pull me in, with fake smiles on their faces, taught me another way to sin.” Don’t get it wrong, Tosha is a loving and compassionate person trying to find truth in this crazy world.
From here the album takes some great twists and turns. Tosha sings about her renewed confidence as a woman and a singer with songs like "I'll Just Say It," "Reverence Day," "Freight Train Blues," and "Salt for Sugar."
"Cold In Detroit Tonight" is a true-to-the-fact story of homelessness in Detroit. This song brings her to tears almost every time she performs it live. It was also released as a video single on her Youtube Channel with true footage of the harshness Detroit faces everyday. This sense blunt reality permeates throughout this album. It’s not not covered up by flashy production either.
Brett Lucas' production of Wrong Side of Right features a wide range of sounds and styles. There's room in his mixes for you to hear his instrument arrangements behind Tosha’s soulful vocals. Some have a delicate approach and some are just fun good feeling vibes. This album will surely draw you in; From muted Trumpet to ripping Guitar licks, from string arrangements to stripped down Piano and backing vocals. There's something for every music lover.
Wrong Side of Right also features top notch musicians not only in Detroit but world wide, who put forth their amazing talents to frame Tosha's vocals in a wonderful light. Rachel Williams sings harmony and occasionally matches unison with Tosha, a feat that is rare to find. Max Bauhof, who also co-produced and engineered the recordings, plays drums on most of the tracks. Chuck Bartels from Sturgill Simpson’s band plays bass, and Evan Mercer of Bettye Lavette’s band plays keyboard. There are also many special guests that are featured per track. Record in Detroit, it’s as authentic as it gets!
