Following the chart-topping success of their debut Blood Brothers, blues rock heavyweights Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia return with Help Yourself, a fiery, soul-soaked studio album that captures the raw chemistry, camaraderie, and powerhouse energy that defines their live shows. Hot off the road the band cut this record at Shock City Studios in St. Louis. Help Yourself is a masterclass in contemporary electric blues with a fearless rock & roll edge. This isn't just a record, it's a live-wire session that puts you right in the room with two of the genre's most respected artists and their all-star band.

"It was great to capture the band live in the studio, just like live on the stage," says Zito. That live spirit pulses through every track, from the swaggering, wordplay-heavy title track "Help Yourself" to the soul-baring emotion of "Alive," a deeply personal love letter born out of loss and redemption. "Alive is about my girl Jackie," Zito shares. "After the tremendous loss of my wife Laura, I was certain life was pretty much over, especially for love. But God had another plan and brought me this angel to make me feel alive again."

Castiglia brings his own grit and truth to the mix, especially on "Can't Be a Prophet," a biting reflection on life on the road and the contrast of coming back to earth after being treated like royalty on tour. "It's based on all of our experiences," he says, "being treated like a King, and coming home to very little fanfare for the local guy."

The band, featuring Scot Sutherland on bass, Lewis Stephens on keys, and the dual-drum attack of Matt Johnson and Ray Hangen delivers with undeniable groove and precision, lifting each track with soulful dynamics and relentless drive. Whether it's the late-night swagger of "Soulard Serenade," the vintage hum of "Ol' Victrola," or the relentless urgency of "Running Out of Time," Help Yourself is both a celebration of the blues and a boundary-pushing testament to its future.

"The camaraderie comes through in every note played, I love this band!" Castiglia says. Help Yourself cements Blood Brothers' status as torchbearers of modern blues rock, authentic, passionate, and unapologetically real. /Amazon

Albert Castiglia - Righteous Souls

Album: Righteous Souls
Size: 131,0 MB
Time: 56:28
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: Blues/Blues-Rock
Art: Front

1. Centerline (Feat. Popa Chubby) (4:44)
2. Get Down To The Nitty Gritty (Feat. Alabama Mike) (4:10)
3. Mama, I Love You (Feat. Kevin Burt) (6:11)
4. You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover (Feat. Christone 'Kingfish' Ingram & Rayne Castiglia) (4:34)
5. All Our Past Times (Feat. Danielle Nicole & Joe Bonamassa) (5:40)
6. Till They Take It Away (Feat. Ally Venable) (4:28)
7. Come On In This House (Feat. Rick Estrin) (6:15)
8. You Were Wrong (Feat. Jimmy Carpenter) (4:35)
9. The Dollar Done Fell (Feat. Josh Smith) (6:00)
10. No Tears Left To Cry (Feat. Gary Hoey) (4:41)
11. What My Momma Told Me (Feat. Rick Estrin & Monster Mike Welch) (5:04)

While not as growly or as tall as the late English blues singer Long John Baldry, Albert (vocals/guitar) lays out his blues vocally & stylistically a little like Baldry with a ballsy tradition & peppers his efforts with stellar lead guitar throughout. There are 11 blessings on Righteous Souls produced by Kid Andersen (guitar/keys/vocals) & recorded in San Jose, CA. Several guest appearances sweeten the proceedings on this platter to bring out the flavors: Joe Bonamassa, Josh Smith, Christone Kingfish Ingram, Popa Chubby, Ally Venable, Monster Mike Welch & Gary Hoey (guitars), Rayne Castiglia, Danielle Nicole, Kevin Burt & Alabama Mike (vocals), Rick Estrin (harmonica) & Jimmy Carpenter (sax).

The album features some duets with well-engrained bluesy singers including a Brenda Patterson-Kathi McDonald-like Danielle Nicole on the Rick Danko-Eric Clapton piece “All Our Past Times.” On “You Can’t Judge a Book By the Cover,” an old Willie Dixon tune & was recorded by Baldry (produced by Rod Stewart & Elton John) a bit rawer Albert captures his more entertainingly with additional vocals by Christone Kingfish Ingram & Rayne Castiglia. This is a good set of blues. It has a mainstream appeal but don’t misunderstand me - I don’t mean like pop music commerciality. People who aren’t blues enthusiasts can & will be able to sink their teeth into this. It’s well played with an attractive swipe; the vocals are spiffy & dynamic as they are on Albert’s original tune “Till They Take It Away” with his Mason Ruffner (“Gypsy Blood”) type vocal & guitar attack.

There is some well-played basic stuff. The obligatory impressive takes that always draw out the hoots & howls. But I look for ingredients that have rendered the tunes spicier, the way a fruity flavor creeps up on the tongue after you swallow the wine. These songs are served without the gristle of the blues. Castiglia has the perfect vocal tone & blues continuity. He has the necessary timbre to ensure authenticity & a lived-in purity. With “You Were Wrong,” has a nice funky soul workout (a Bar-Kays “Soul Finger” exuberance & sax solo right out of “Wild Weekend,” by the early ’60s Rockin’ Rebels. There’s a little Paul Butterfield Blues Band tradition with the vocalizing & guitar machinery that spews smoke in every direction with harmonica bursts on “What My Momma Told Me” - invigorating, exciting. /John Apice, Americana Highways

Personnel: Albert Castiglia (vocals, guitar); Jerry Jemmott (bass); Jim Pugh (keys); Derrick D’Mar Martin (drums); Lisa Andersen (background vocals); Jon Otis (percussion); Jack Sanford (baritone sax); Eddie Tarczy (harpsichord).

Blood Brothers Live in Canada is an album which perfectly captures all the excitement and blues/rock energy created by the dynamic duo of guitarists Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia on their recent Blood Brothers Tour, featured in an intimate setting that transports listeners to front row seats for all the action. Blood Brothers Live in Canada was recorded at Blue Frog Studios, White Rock, British Columbia, Canada, on May 19 and 20, 2023. The new album was produced by Mike Zito and mastered by Kid Andersen.

“Our shows in White Rock were full of energy and fire,” Mike Zito says about the recording. “Blue Frog Studios set an exceptional vibe for the task at hand. Albert and the band were seriously on that night; I felt really good about it.” Adds Albert Castiglia: “The stars were aligned that night in White Rock: the perfect room, perfect acoustics, an amazing audience and incendiary playing by everyone in the band. We’ve had a lot of shows like that, but very few have been captured on tape. It had to be shared with the world. It was a night to remember!”

The track listing for Blood Brothers Live in Canada album includes 10 live versions of songs that were originally included on the duo’s Blood Brothers studio album released to great international critical acclaim on Gulf Coast Records. That disc was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith and proceeded to top both the Billboard and iTunes blues charts after its release in March, 2023. Augmenting those tracks are searing live covers of Zito’s “Gone to Texas,” the title track of his 2013 CD released on Ruf Records; and a blistering take on the Neil Young Classic, “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which closes the new album out in grand style.

Personnel: Mike Zito (vocals, guitars); Albert Castiglia (vocals, guitars); Doug Byrkit (bass); Matt Johnson (drums, percussion); Ephraim Lowell (drums, percussion); Lewis Stephens (piano, organ).

Last year, four of the world’s top blues guitarists gathered at Louisiana’s famed Dockside Studios to lay down tracks for this collaborative effort between Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia – affectionately dubbed Blood Brothers. While those two wrote the songs and sourced members from each’s band for this new sextet, guitarists, and co-producers Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith provided the guidance and even added their respective axes to a few tunes. The Blood Brothers toured last summer and fall to great reviews, playing from each’s repertoire and doing lots of southern rock covers, heavily weighted toward The Allman Brothers and that enduring twin guitar (slide and lead) sound. Having witnessed one such show, as terrific as it was, it caused great anticipation for their own material.

Now we have arrived. It’s not often when two leading artists of a genre combine forces, but Zito has produced the last few Castiglia albums and the two have cemented exceptional chemistry over the last few years. The band draws heavily from Zito’s touring unit in the formation of the band with Lewis Stephens (piano/organ), Doug Byrkit (bass), and Matt Johnson (drums) while Ephraim Lowell (drums) hails from Castiglia’s. Bonamassa is featured on “A Thousand Heartaches” and various musicians, including a five-piece horn section and two background vocalists, contributed to the session. Zito wrote or co-wrote four of these eleven with Castiglia penning the aforementioned Bonamassa guest tune. They cover two Fred James tunes, one each from John Hiatt and Tinsley Ellis, among the eleven.

Kicking it off, the two sing in unison on Zito’s “Hey Sweet Mama,” with background vocalists and horns producing a huge wall of sound on a tune that reflects the St. Louis-bred Zito’s Chuck Berry roots. Zito’s standout “In My Soul,” was inspired when he first learned of his wife’s cancer diagnosis. Thus, all the nuances of Zito’s soulful vocals are on display with Castiglia and the backgrounds adding a gospel element. As they do throughout, the two exchange cutting guitar licks that are succinct statements, not overindulgent exercises. The other two Zito originals are the stomping, rave-up “No Good Woman” and the instrumental rocker, co-written with Smith, the Allman-esque “Hill Country Jam,” reflective of much of what was heard in their live show last fall.

Castiglia’s “A Thousand Heartaches” is the requisite change-of-pace ballad, self-described as modeled on the kind of tune like “Bell Bottom Blues” or Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight,” essentially about taking the high road in an unrequited love situation. Together with Zito’s “In My Soul,” these two display the strongest songcraft on the album. Another strong entry is Ellis’ “Tooth Nail,” one that quickly became a favorite for Castiglia, a born-and-raised Florida southern rocker, sharing similar lineage with the Atlanta, GA based Ellis. Zito delivers an incendiary slide solo, Ellis style. In turn, Zito turned to one his favorites, JJ Cale, in the closing “One Step Ahead of the Blues.” The other four might be standouts on albums from other artists but pale in comparison to the tunes already mentioned, excepting their filthy, stomping, revved-up take on Hiatt’s “My Business” and the slow, simmering guitar work out on Fred James/Berry Hill’s “You’re Gonna Burn.”

Packed with fire, inspiration, and a palpable tight bond between the two principals, this is blues rock with some strong songs. Yet, because the Zito and Castiglia originals outshine so many of the others, more original material could have made an already strong album that much stronger. /Jim Hynes, Glide Magazine

Albert Castiglia - I Got Love

Album: I Got Love
Size: 109,6 MB
Time: 47:29
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2022
Styles: Electric blues
Art: Full

1. I Got Love (3:16)
2. Don't Pray With The Devil (3:23)
3. Burning Bridges (3:57)
4. Sanctuary (4:25)
5. Double Down (2:59)
6. Long Haul Daddy (5:29)
7. What's Wrong With You? (4:59)
8. Depression Blues (4:27)
9. Freedomland (4:01)
10. You Don't Know Hell (4:28)
11. Take My Name Out Of Your Mouth (6:00)

Miami’s own Blues Music Award-winning guitar sensation Albert Castiglia catches some big air on his brand new release I Got Love. The 11 new songs here capture the essence of the pandemic experience for Castiglia and likely mirror what many of his fans have endured, as well. “I Got Love is a musical essay documenting the last two years of my life: two years of many highs and lows,” Castiglia says. “It’s about falling, failing, adapting, reinventing, surviving and becoming triumphant.” The record is, indeed, Castiglia’s most theme-centered album to date and effectively graphs the internal tug-of-war between darkness and light he had to overcome to survive, bring these songs to the world, and continue onward in his chosen vocation. Mike Zito produced the sessions brilliantly, capturing Castiglia at full strength backed by heavyweight players including Justine Tompkins (bass and vocals), Ephraim Lowell (drums and vocals),and Lewis Stephens (Hammond B3 organ and piano).

Castiglia is no stranger to heavyweights. He was jumped into the blues scene as the guitarist for Chicago harp master Junior Wells, one of the most definitive harmonica players to ever emerge from the City of Big Shoulders. He also went on to back up vocalist Sandra Hall before going all-in and becoming a solo artist. Since then, Castiglia has won the Blues Music Award for Blues Rock Album of the Year for his record Masterpiece and was also nominated for Blues Rock Artist of the Year. He’s established himself as one of the USA’s mightiest contemporary roots musicians and there’s no end to his achievements in sight. Castiglia gets busy immediately, leading off the record with his title track “I Got Love.” It’s a hard-hitting track that rocks with a kinetic, survival-based energy that’s bound to pump up anyone feeling the stress of modern life. His vocals are bold and cathartic and his guitar notes sting and soar. The band is tight and bright behind him, creating a solid pocket that drives Castiglia forward.

The snarling funk of “Don’t Pray With The Devil” finds Castiglia preaching and reaching, dispensing sage advice on the mic while simultaneously ripping his strings off with the kind of aggressive phrasing that threatens to crash but never does. AC walks the line between chaos and music in a way that only those who have felt the edge can and truly lets us feel what’s in his soul. If this doesn’t move yours, you don’t have one. “Burning Bridges” is more hard-edged funk/rock and speaks to the need to cut negative, smack-talking people out of one’s life and contract one’s inner circle. It’s an angry song and Castiglia goes at it full-throttle, showing some spleen to those who have tried to slow his roll. His crisp rhythm playing and overdriven leads are on-point and channel the intense emotions that inspired this honest and entertaining track.

Castiglia gives his slide a workout on the shuffling “Long Haul Daddy.” This is upbeat, party blues as it was meant to be played and is guaranteed to get any crowd up and moving. Again, Albert leaves it all out there on this one, playing with a fury that could power the lights of Miami. It’s a genuine bone-shaker with a call-and-response chorus that’s nothing but fun. Other prime Castiglia moments on I Got Love include Melvin Taylor’s “Depression Blues” and the closer “Take My Name Out Of Your Mouth.” This is without a doubt Albert Castiglia’s finest effort to date and shows him to be one of the best players and songwriters working today. Anyone seeking high-test blues/rock that speaks the Truth will find it right here. /Mike O'Cull, Rock & Blues Muse

It’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It's a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric blues from this astonishing young guitarist.” Likewise, BluesAbout.com called Castiglia “one of those mid-tier artists that is just one album away from breaking big and becoming a household word in the blues world.” Or, as M Music & Musicians once noted, “His back-to-basics approach follows in the footsteps of those who fostered the blues in the Mississippi Delta and the smoky late-night haunts of Chicago.” After the highly successful and critically acclaimed release of Masterpiece on Gulf Coast Records, Castiglia was nominated for two Blues Music Awards in the categories of Blues Rock Album of the Year and Blues Rock Artist.

Chuck Berry, the artist, was a genius. We owe just about everything great about rock and roll to Berry (and his pianist/collaborator, Johnnie Johnson). Singer/guitarist Mike Zito pays tribute to the artist on Rock ‘n’ Roll – A Tribute to Chuck Berry.

Berry, the man, was more complicated. He was an African American who perfected a largely white artform. His career stalled due to a Mann Act conviction, which many believe to be a racist statue. People have maintained that after his 20-month jail sentence, Berry came out a changed, meaner person. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were all kinds of allegations against Berry: assaulting women, video cameras in bathrooms, and videotapes of minors. He is both survivor and a perpetrator, easy to sympathize with but hard to root for.

There’s a fantastic scene at the end of Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll, the documentary about the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards efforts to organize a tribute show for Berry. Berry tortures Richards for most of the film, treating Richards more like a court-appointed dentist than as a huge rock star trying to honor Berry’s legacy. At the end of the show, Richards, who has seen some things, looks completely desiccated, totally broken by Berry. Altamont and Hells Angels were one thing. But Berry was next-level pain.

But people like Richards and Zito pay their respect because Berry’s music is just that good. Blasting this album over a weekend, my one-year-old daughter would consistently bop to Zito’s takes on these classic, instantly-recognizable songs. It says something when music resonates that powerfully with a person so young.

Zito says the album originated from his time living in St. Louis, Berry’s hometown, where he got to know Berry’s drummer and son. I suspect Zito also hoped to introduce Berry’s music to younger fans, who might not be familiar with many of these classic songs. Similarly, Zito features an impressive array of guests across the album, using this as an opportunity to promote lower-profile artists (although there are also big names, like Joe Bonamassa and Luther Dickinson, who finds time to appear on what seems to be thousands of albums a year).

There are also some cool surprises. “Downbound Train” is trippier than Berry’s original, featuring guitar right out of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused.” The guitar comes courtesy of Alex Skolnick, best known for this work with the thrash-metal band Testament (but also an accomplished jazz guitarist). “Rock and Roll Music” is re-imagined with slide guitar and backing vocals from the amazing Joanna Connor. And “Too Much Monkey Business” features a laid-back Dickinson co-vocal that gives the song a different complexion than Berry’s higher-energy original.

Despite the stunning number of guests, Zito is never lost. His vocals and guitar are present on every track, gracefully allowing his collaborators to shine, but also not deferring to anyone. Zito never lets the songs stray too far from the Berry originals, but provides space for different takes on material that is canonically seared into the minds of many. For instance, “Brown Eyed Handsome Man,” one of my all-time favorite Berry tunes, here features singer/guitarists Kirk Fletcher and Josh Smith, but doesn’t deviate too far from Berry’s original. They throw in some slightly flashier guitar licks and put a little mustard on the vocals, but otherwise the performers know better than to mess with perfection.

The perfection of Berry’s music is the challenge of an album like this. Back to the Future, which wasn’t a documentary, features a scene where Michael J. Fox, having traveled back in time to the 1950s, performs Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” at a high school dance, using all of Berry’s moves, both of the guitar and duckwalk variety. Berry’s cousin runs to call him, holding the phone up so Berry can hear the new sound he’s supposedly been looking for. It’s a goofy joke, but there’s a larger message: that Berry’s music is historically significant. The world would be a sadder place without the music of Cream or the Allman Brothers, but would things be that different? Now think about where we would be without Berry. What music wouldn’t have been written without his (and Johnson’s) coming first? Would we have a Beatles or a Stones without him?

And that’s what works about this album. It’s timeless music respectfully presented by talented artists. Zito uses his visibility not just to honor Berry, but to also re-introduce him to a generation (or two) of fans who might not be familiar with his work, which still stands up remarkably well, all those decades later. Adding on to the good deed, Zito also uses this as an opportunity to showcase contemporary artists who might not be as well-known as they should be (and many of whom have been produced by Zito, like the criminally good Albert Castiglia, who performs Berry’s “30 Days”). Great music and great intentions makes for a beautiful tribute. The Review: 9/10 ~Steven Ovadia

As many artists will attest, the most unexpected circumstance can spark artistic inspiration. That’s a fact that hasn’t been lost on singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Albert Castiglia. With his latest album, the aptly named Masterpiece (available May 24), he celebrates an unforeseen triumph — a connection with a daughter he never knew he had. The result is a work that’s both personal and provocative all at the same time.

Co-produced by long-time friend and colleague Mike Zito, and coming out on Zito’s own label, Gulf Coast Records, the album also finds Castiglia reflecting on the disappointment and disconnect that’s gripped the nation in the past several years. “This album is an observation of life through the eyes of a father, grandfather, husband and citizen of the world. My newly found family brought out a perspective I never thought I’d have.”

The Miami-raised musician served an apprenticeship while backing legendary blues musician Junior Wells. He later went on to work with singer Sandra Hall. Thus far his solo career has yielded eight critically acclaimed album and consist kudos for his exceptional instrumental prowess, his searing vocals, and live performances that have dazzled audiences from coast to coast. It’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It’s a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric blues from this astonishing young guitarist.”

Likewise, BluesAbout.com called Castiglia “one of those mid-tier artists that is just one album away from breaking big and becoming a household word in the blues world.” Or, as M Music & Musicians once noted, “His back-to-basics approach follows in the footsteps of those who fostered the blues in the Mississippi Delta and the smoky late-night haunts of Chicago.”

For now, anyway, Castiglia is content to celebrate a new chapter in his life and what has become an added incentive for making music. That philosophy is perhaps best expressed in another song on the new album, a track called “Keep on Swinging.”

“It’s about advice I would have given my daughter had I been around when she was a kid but which I’m now able to give to grandchildren,” Castiglia says.” ‘Keep on swinging, don’t let the haters get you down.'” I always try to remind them that they are special and can accomplish anything their heart desires if they only put their minds to it. They’re the ones that give me hope for the future.”

Blues guitarist Albert Castiglia was born in New York on August 12, 1969. Five years later his parents moved to Miami, where Castiglia began learning guitar. By the age of 12, he began playing local gigs and did so consistently throughout high school. Following completion of his college education, Castiglia worked as a social service investigator while playing gigs at night and on weekends around South Florida. In 1990 he joined Miami Blues Authority, and was the group's lead guitarist and vocalist for over seven years.

After an audition with Chicago blues harp legend Junior Wells in 1997, Castiglia become the permanent lead guitarist for Wells' Hoodoo Man's Band. Following Junior's death in 1998, the band stayed together long enough to open shows for blues belter Sandra Hall. In 2001 Castiglia began writing his own material with the help of Graham Drout, guitarist and vocalist with the Miami-based band Iko Iko. With Drout's assistance, Castiglia released his debut CD, Burn, in 2002, followed four years later by A Stone's Throw on Blues Leaf Records.

Castiglia stayed on Blues Leaf Records for the next six years, releasing three more records - These Are the Days (2008), Keepin On (2010), and Living the Dream (2012). He then moved to Ruf Records in 2014 for Solid Ground. A live album arrived in 2015, followed by the studio set Big Dog in 2016, which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. A year later, he returned with the Mike Zito-produced Up All Night. /Biography by Al Campbell, AllMusic

Up All Night. It's an apt title for Albert Castiglia's seventh album: nobody sleeps when this man is in town. After 27 years of house-rocking studio albums and smack-in-the-mouth live shows, the Florida bandleader is the acknowledged master of red-raw, sweat-and-hair blues that gives it to you straight. Now, the visceral riffs and bruised soul of Up All Night make everything else sound like a lullaby. Up All Night finds Castiglia in a creative swagger after last year's acclaimed Big Dog. What wasn't broke then hasn't been fixed now, with the bluesman once again recording at Dockside Studios, Louisiana, and capturing a warts-and-all mix alongside producer Mike Zito.

With the release of Castiglia’s 5th CD Keepin On, Albert is doing exactly what the title of the CD suggests. Having opened for ZZ Top, Elvin Bishop, and The Radiators, he’s quickly becoming a favorite high energy performer at festivals across the country. Castiglia’s history is as colorful as his home town of Miami, Florida, going back to 1990 when he played in a local Miami Band, The Miami Blues Authority, and won awards locally for “Best Blues Guitarist.” He got a big break after meeting the legendary Junior Wells in 1996, and soon became Junior’s lead guitar player before Wells died in 1998. Albert toured the U.S. and Europe with Junior and then found himself in Chicago when Junior passed. Soon though, he was touring again with Sandra Hall.

He returned to South Florida after deciding to launch his solo career and went to work on his first CD, Burn (2002), a self-release, collaborating with his long time friend, Graham Wood Drout of Iko-Iko. Drout’s visceral, yet literary songs became the perfect vehicle for Castiglia’s soulful vocals.

Albert lives in South Florida - full of Hurricanes and he wrote a masterpiece long before the rest of the world woke up to watch Katrina. Electric Woman marks the international solo debut of Italian recording artist Eliana Cargnelutti and once again shows Ruf Records’ willingness to think outside the box. The project brings together unique talents from diverse genres and different corners of the world, including acclaimed American bluesman Albert Castiglia, who produced, and rock and metal specialist Timo Rotten, who recorded and mixed the album in his native Germany. It features veteran all-rounders Jamie Little (drums), Roger Inniss (bass) and John Ginty (keyboards) and was mastered by Grammy winner David Farrell (Irma Thomas, Royal Southern Brotherhood) in New Orleans.

Its centerpiece is of course singer/guitarist Cargnelutti, who combines hotshot vocal swagger with impressive technical chops. During her young career, the Udine, Italy native has shared the stage with the best of the Italian blues scene while also dabbling in soul, jazz, funk and heavy metal. “I started out playing rock and metal,” she reveals. “They’ll always be part of my musical language.” Indeed, cuts like “Just for Me” and “Show Me” confirm that hard rock and heavy metal are still very close to her heart. “You can hear many of my influences: Guns N’ Roses, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Sardinas, Susan Tedeschi, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Led Zeppelin.”

Rock 'n' roll is a conveyor belt. Every year, another bright young thing, famous for a finger-snap, then forgotten forever. Albert Castiglia has walked a different path. As the man who once sang, "The road to riches is playing guitar, that's why I'm living inside my car", he's spent two decades climbing the greasy pole and paying dues with interest. Now, 'Solid Ground' is payback. Albert's debut album for Ruf Records will let the global blues-rock scene discover what the hardcore fans have known from the start. Namely, that here is an artist who sings from the gut, shoots guitar licks from the hip and writes songs that articulate your hopes, fears and heartaches. "Solid Ground is my best album to date," says the 44-year-old bandleader, simply. "I put more time, love, blood, sweat and tears into this recording than any of the others, and it shows. I love every song on it and I'm sure there'll be something for everyone to like." This album is the game-changer and the giant leap. You can keep your bright young things and your overnight success stories. Albert Castiglia is a talent built to last.

09. Elvis Presley (5:57)
10. Trinity (5:39)

I just received the new release, Bad News Travels, from John Ginty and it's really quite good. It's unusual that I find a release that is actually built around an organ player (James Brown and Lucky Peterson) but here's one. Opening with The Quirk, Ginty starts this instrumental track with a B3 vamp and slowly piece by piece the band joins in. Dan Fadel on drums, Paul Kuzik on bass and then out pops an outrageous guitar player.... Albert Castiglia. Playing a blues rock fusion, this track rips! (Listen to those drums!) On Black Cat, Ginty slows everything down and Castiglia takes the mic for some really nice vocals. Ginty plays really soulful B3 keys against really tasty blues riffs by Castiglia. Peanut Butter, another instrumental, has a great hook driven by Ginty on keys and Todd Wolfe steps in playing great response to Ginty's call on guitar. This is some really intense guitar work and I credit Ginty not only for assembling this great crew of musicians and building the tracks, but also for bringing out the best in all of these musicians. On a more pop oriented track, Seven & The Spirit, Alecia Chakour takes the lead on vocals and Neal Casal sits in on guitar. This is definitely the airplay track of the release and it should do quite well. Chakour has a great voice for this style track and Casal plays a super melodic, well articulated guitar solo to top off the track. Next Up is Mirrors, a high steppin instrumental featuring Warren Haynes on guitar with a solid overdriven guitar tone with an attack more like Santana than I have heard from him. The track takes a bit of a Latin turn as Ginty solos on B3 and Fadel and Kuzik absolutely jam. Really nice. Switch really features Ginty on keys more than any other track and it's a driver. With tom tom work pushing the bottom, Ginty really gets the most out of his 3 piece band on this cool jazz instrumental. On Damage Control, Ginty gets a bit more of the New Orleans beat going and Castiglia is back on vocal and guitar. A hot country blues like guitar solo erupts and Cris Jacobs joins on acoustic guitar and backing vocals. Rock Ridge features Martie Maguire on fiddle starting with a bit of a folk/mountain sound but then breaking into a full blown jazz rock track, not unlike early Dregs stuff. This is a really cool track showing yet more versatility from Ginty and crew. Castiglia joins again for the funky Elvis Presley. With clever lyrics and and great vocals, Castiglia leads the way on this track, laying down a really sweet solo with a lot of feel. Ginty unloads some heavy sounds on this track and the bottom is solid and consistent. This is a cool track and should meet a totally different audience than the standard radio play group... this could be the big one! Just the right amount of hook and heft. Trinity is a full blown foot stomper featuring Cris Jacobs on guitar. Breaking midwave it takes on a gospel like swing and is a super closer. This is a really super release and one that could appeal to a very wide audience with loads of guitar, great writing great beats and of course cool keys. ~Review by Bman
