Two local powerhouses Josh Teskey (lead singer of The Teskey Brothers) and Ash Grunwald have teamed up for Push The Blues Away; an album born out of a mutual love for the blues and a genuine appreciation for each other’s talents. On Push The Blues Away, two of Australia’s most captivating vocalists, Josh Teskey and Ash Grunwald, come together to cast off the weight of expectation and revel in music’s most simple pleasures.

Recorded entirely live and straight to tape, with their only percussion consisting of gospel inspired hand claps and stomps, the pair laid down six original tunes, some penned by Josh, some by Ash, along with two classic Blues covers, Son House’s “Preachin’ Blues:” and the song that kickstarted the whole project, “The Sky Is Crying”, written by Elmore James. To help them achieve this vision, they enlisted the help of Josh’s brother, Teskey Brothers’ guitarist, vocalist and Grammy-nominated engineer, Sam Teskey on production duties. Being a mastermind of analogue recording techniques, Sam knew how to capture a vibe above all else.

Both artists have had an extremely busy 12 months; renowned as one of Australia’s finest live performers, Ash Grunwald released his critically acclaimed new album MOJO along with his first book, “Surf By Day, Jam By Night” whilst The Teskey Brothers followed up their ARIA Award-winning and Grammy nominated second album Run Home Slow with the 2020 release of Live At Forum, earning them their first Australian #1 album.

After emerging from Australia's blues and roots rock scene in the early 2000s, Ash Grunwald's solo guitar-and-stompbox sets became a mainstay at festivals across the country. A student of the Delta blues and pioneers of electric blues, his contemporary spin on classic influences and soulful, wide-ranging vocals has earned him multiple ARIA Music Award nominations. Following his 2002 debut album, Introducing Ash Grunwald, he charted in Australia for the first time with 2006's Give Signs, his first set of all-original material. He had his best chart performance to date with his sixth studio LP, 2012's Trouble's Door, which cracked the Top 30. Grunwald's ninth album, 2019's Mojo, featured guest spots from, among others, Terry Evans, Joe Bonamassa, and Kacey Chambers. ~Marcy Donelson

Yes, Australia has a vivid roots music scene, and some of the more interesting folk and blues acts around today are a part of it. Ash Grunwald is one of the more interesting Australian blues musicians. This live album is just Ash with an amplified resonator guitar, slide and stomp box. The sound is aggressive, and hard-driving, with just a hint of funk, and this album is somewhat reminiscent of Chris Whitley's At Martyr's album. On studio albums, that funk influence is a bit more pronounced, particularly on Give Signs, which incorporates bits of hip-hop at times, and does so more interestingly than Chris Thomas King, in my opinion. However, this album sticks a bit more to an aggressive blues style. Grunwald is not the virtuoso that fellow Aussie Jeff Lang is, but on this album, he bangs away convincingly on his National, at times strumming so forcefully that it sounds more like a percussion instrument than a guitar. His slide work is rudimentary, but effective. What stands out most about Grunwald is his very unique voice. I can't describe it, so just listen to some sound clips. It is a bit of a polarizing voice-- you either love it or hate it. Needless to say, though, it is a big voice. ~Amazon

Just a few weeks ago, there was but a distant thought, tapping on the creative mind of Mr Ash Grunwald. It was a quiet idea but it was persistent. It softly projected the notion that somehow, maybe, two thirds of The Living End could be his band on more than just a single…the planets aligning perhaps so together they could bash out a full albums worth of tracks.

The formerly polite idea began to shout, on a Friday morning not that long ago, after Ash found himself in the somewhat unexpected position of performing live on Triple M Breakfast in Melbourne. He’d recently released his, Scott and Andy’s ripping cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ which was meant to serve as a beacon for Ash’s community; alerting them of the upcoming national tour that the lads are soon to embark on but ‘Crazy’ had a different direction. Developing a life well beyond the borders of a loyal fanbase, ‘Crazy’ made it’s way out into commercial radio land, and took Ash with it. So as the snowball rolled, so did the idea and that very afternoon Ash found his way to St Kilda’s Hothouse Studios with the lads from The Living End and amped up for a few hours of sonic exploration. Those hours turned into 6 straight days of recording that ended with an immense sense of excitement and an idea realized. With the encouragement and enthusiasm of Scott Owen and Andy Strachan, Ash Grunwald’s rock monster was welcomingly unleashed and GARGANTUA was born.

Comprised of two new and original tracks (involving CSG, Arnie and a fuck you attitude), three vastly different cover songs and a handful of utterly off the hook reworkings of some of Ash’s biggest tracks, this album documents the findings of an unplanned experiment in altered methodology.

On Trouble’s Door, Ash Grunwald comes out of the gate swinging. From the first note, his latest album sports a premium of finely-crafted blues. The songwriting is solid, the presentation perfect, and the vibe vivacious.

Grunwald released his first album in 2002, and has been active ever since. He hails from Australia, but his music takes him all over the world. His main claim to unique fame is his method of fusing traditional blues with beats and rhythms influenced by hip-hop.

Trouble’s Door was produced by Grunwald himself, and he makes the most of that creative control as he brings his music to vibrant life. There’s a lot here to appeal to fans of many genres, as Grunwald makes himself and his music very accessible and easy to appreciate. His songwriting flawlessly interweaves clever lyrics through a metrical tapestry of tunes. As he effortlessly combines traditional and non-traditional instrumentation and musical methods, his true talent quickly rises to the surface. Trouble’s Door is such a tight and well-executed record that it’s tough to pick a favorite track. That’s usually a good sign, and it certainly is in this case. It’s so refreshing to see an artist do new things while still staying true to blues roots. Ash Grunwald is a fantastic musician, and so it’s not surprising that Troubles’s Door is a fantastic album.

Ash Grunwald - Now

Size: 112,9 MB
Time: 47:45
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2015
Styles: Heavy Blues Rock

01. River (3:56)

08. Second Guess (4:27)
09. Ramblin (4:22)
10. Send Me (2:42)
11. The Least Among Us (5:38)

They don't come much more gnarly sounding than Grunwald (think Otis Taylor), when it comes to singing the blues.

With a guitar drenched in reverb and some sort of studio trickery (bags of echo and vocoder methinks), it immediately reminded me of the remixed R.L. Burnside disc A Bothered Mind (2004) and the cross-over potential that disc had.

Aimed squarely at the blues market that think it's simply 12 bars and an electric guitar, Grunwald wants you on the dancefloor screamin' shoutin' and crunching the beats underfoot. I love, even though at parts it's overblown, the sheer swagger of this disc. It's got a big heart mixed into a big sound.

What came as a surprise thought, is this is just a three-piece: Grunwald voice and guitar, Ian Peres' keyboards and a six-armed drummer in Pete Wilkins.

Next, leaps out simply because it is Grunwald alone (just like Ramblin' Man on his last album with the reverb button on 11), then it's back to the full tilt boogie that will draw comparisons to the recent Gary Clark Jr album. ~Colin Morris

On May 20th, Ash Grunwald independently released a self-titled compilation album in the U.S. of both studio and live tracks. After releasing ten albums in his career thus far, this marks Ash’s first official release within the U.S. The album’s official music video features Ash, Xavier Rudd and friends at home in Byron Bayenjoying their second passion in life: surfing. “We’ve got a really cool community up here -- many barrels and campfire jams! It’s the Australian cliché, but we love it.”

Ash Grunwald, loved for his crowd frenzied shows and blistering guitar playing, is reminiscent of the greats before him like Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and Steve Ray Vaughn. Vocally and lyrically, you can pick up pieces of Howlin’ Wolf, R.L. Burnside, Eddie James “Son” House and Tom Waits. Australia’s Triple J Magazine notes, “The fat, urgent rhythms drive Grunwald’s smoking, bluesy riffs like an unlicensed teenager in a stolen car.”
