An unsung guitar player and one of the Crescent City's best songwriters, Earl King mixed New Orleans R&B with just a touch of straight blues, and while he frequently wrote about the hard hazards of romance, he sang his material with a wink and a smile which made his tough times tales still feel like party music. This first volume in Classics' chronological history of King's recording career begins with both sides of his debut single for Savoy Records from 1953 when he was billed as Earl Johnson, then moves on to his sides for Art Rupe's Specialty Records from 1954 when he was billed as either Earl King or the Kings, depending on the release, and finishes with his first recordings for Ace Records from 1955 (he would remain with Ace until 1960 before switching over to Lew Chudd's Imperial Records), some of which were released under the name Handsome Earl. Whatever he was billed as, King was as efficient as he was prolific (nothing here even comes close to three minutes in length), and his songs feel like they've been around for a long time; they are a part of the very structure of New Orleans R&B. Highlights here include the bouncing "Have You Gone Crazy," the fascinating and stuttering rhythm of "'Til I Say We're Done," the late-night feel of "Sitting and Wondering" (given a boozy atmosphere by Lee Allen's tenor sax lines), and King's classic "Those Lonely, Lonely Nights." King would develop and evolve further as his career progressed, but these earliest sides have a wonderfully open feel of energy and joy, and while technically it's the blues, it's also New Orleans dance music through and through. ~Steve Leggett

The label Koko Mojo Records focuses on the release of classic and less well known songs from the rhythm & blues area. This collection, "When You Find Love You're Feelin 'Good", is about the magic of love, the magic of moments of getting to know each other. Accordingly, the happy dancing couple on the cover can also be understood, yes, you feel good. But if you open the cover, you can see the once so happily and enthusiastically transfigured man with two suitcases in his hands and his wife, who, a toddler and a baby, obviously points him out of the house. Yes, love can tip over.

And exactly these situations are represented on this sampler with the corresponding songs. "Feelin 'Good", "I'm So In Love With You" contrast with those with titles like "After Marriage Blues" or "Worried About My Baby". And once it was called "I Wanna Be The Only One", it will later be called "You Can Have Her". Yes, that's how life can play. "My Girlfriend" opens the dance, The Cadillacs sing the doo-wop robe clapping in one hand very happily.

Little Junior Parker's song is the namesake of this collection and sings it with its blues, which actually sounds exactly like Magic Sam's song , but at that time it was also often unclear who was actually the author of a piece. Over the course of the twenty-eight tracks, we continue to encounter wind-supported rhythm & blues, pop music with string arrangements, further doo wop tracks, another pure blues by JB Lenoir , who reports on his current marriage, or the Johnny Otis Congregation , who played with the "Wedding Boogie" lets some preachers have their say.

The mix of artists consists on the one hand of relatively unknown musicians such as Gene And Eunice , Tiny Topsy or The Sunbeams , but on the other hand Howlin 'Wolf , Earl King or Clyde McPhatter can also be heard. Ultimately, this compilation represents a representative image of the music scene of colored artists, with the typical sounds of the fifties. There are also some well-known melodies, especially I refer to titles like "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", originally by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers from 1956, here in a version of The Gallahads or "Lover Please " fromClyde McPhatter . So there is a colorful mood about love, happiness, wedding, passion and disappointments.

From the beginning, Motown was almost exclusively devoted to soul. But they did have a few blues-oriented artists on their roster, especially in the early 1960s. Truthfully, though, this 20-track compilation isn't exactly a blues anthology. It's more like a collection of soul cuts with a bluesy feeling, by performers who had substantial or deep roots in pure blues. Mable John (Little Willie's sister) and Sammy Ward, for instance, sing R&B/soul with some bluesy shadings; jump blues veteran Amos Milburn sings modified earthy R&B, married to Motown's embryonic production machine; Earl King has a slight New Orleans flavor to his previously unreleased performances. The unknown Arthur Adams sings blues/soul crossover; Luther Allison comes by far the closest to real blues, and is the only one of the artists whose selections date from the 1970s. You can quibble about the accuracy of the compilation's theme, but it's not a bad excuse to get some interesting Motown performances out of the vaults and onto CD, though it's not truly top-drawer blues or soul. Only one of these was even a modest hit (Sammy Ward's 1960 single "Who's the Fool"), and seven tracks were previously unreleased (King and Adams never even got to officially release anything on Motown), so even seasoned Motown collectors will find much of interest here. ~Richie Unterberger

THE COMPLETE 1955-1962 ACE & IMPERIAL SINGLES One of the cornerstones of New Orleans blues and R&B, the great Earl King was a superb all-around singer, an unorthodox guitarist, and an inventive songwriter. He composed well-known standards such as “Come On” (which would later be covered by Jimi Hendrix on his album Electric Ladyland), “Those Lonely, Lonely Nights,” and “Big Chief” (Professor Longhair would record the most celebrated version of the latter song in 1964), just to name a few. King exemplified the funkier Crescent City sound of the time, too. This essential CD compiles all of the singles he made for the Imperial and Ace labels, between 1955 and 1962. This collector’s release also contains four additional sides by King from that period, cut for the small imprints Rex, Vin, and Post. All of these wonderful numbers form the building blocks of Earl King’s legendary musical legacy.

Earl King - Sexual Telepathy

Year: 1990

1. Old Mr. Bad Luck (3:06)
2. I'll Take You Back Home (2:41)
3. A Weary Silent Night (3:02)
4. Time For The Sun To Rise (4:47)
5. No One More For The Road (3:12)
6. Going Public (3:18)
7. Love Is The Way Of Life (4:13)
8. Sexual Telepathy (3:53)
9. Happy Little Nobody's Waggy Tail Dog (4:27)
10. Always A First Time (3:49)
11. Make A Better World (4:09)

Reunited with a more sympathetic New Orleans rhythm section (bassist George Porter Jr., and drummer Kenny Blevins) and a funkier horn section, King excelled handsomely on this uncommonly strong outing. As we've come to expect from him, he brought a sheaf of new originals to the sessions, from a saucy "Sexual Telepathy" to a heartwarming "Happy Little Nobody's Waggy Tail Dog." Remakes of his "Always a First Time" and "A Weary Silent Night" were welcome inclusions (especially since we can't easily lay our hands on the originals!). /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Recorded at Sea-Saint Studios in 1972 with Allen Toussaint producing and the Meters also on board, New Orleans Blues is somewhat of a lost album for Crescent City singer and guitarist Earl King. The project was originally supposed to be released on Atlantic Records but never materialized, and only the wonderfully ragged and funky "Street Parade" officially saw the light of day as a single on Toussaint's Kansu label. It's a shame the album never appeared, because the combination of King and Toussaint is pure dynamite, with Toussaint's trademark horn charts pulling the best from King's expressive voice and elegant guitar work. Track after track is marvelous, stopping just short of funk and absolutely dripping with New Orleans soul. King revisits two of his older hits, "A Mother's Love," which he originally recorded for Specialty Records in 1954, and "Mama and Papa," which he cut in 1962 for Imperial Records, and in both cases the songs are recast and redefined by Toussaint's sympathetic, atmospheric production. "Fallin'" has an impressive emotional balance, while the odd "Medieval Days" shows King could handle complicated narrative material with ease, although he is at his best on powerfully soulful ballads like "You Make Me Feel Good," the closing track here. Given the history of these sessions, it is remarkable to hear how well it all fits together, and it is difficult to imagine why Atlantic didn't release it at the time. King never sounded better than he did at these sessions, and that's saying something. ~Steve Leggett

Earl King - Hard River To Cross

Year: 1993
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 52:50
Size: 121,8 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Full

1. Medieval Days (3:45)

10. I'm Still Holding On (4:38)
11. Handy Wrap (4:51)
12. Love Can Save The World (5:19)

Earl King certainly remains one of New Orleans' more distinctive artists, having evolved from a disciple of Guitar Slim to one of the Crescent City’s most important songwriters, and a distinctive performer. Hard River to Cross, his new Black Top release, is another welcome helping of his unique, often quirky, but always intriguing music. King’s recent songs show a maturity in themes and lyrics that provide for tasty, funk-laden blues and soul, and still retain a distinct “New Orleans” flavor.

Most of the songs here are new, like the title track, "Seduction Lady" and "Big Foot", although he does a few remakes of such older gems as "Medieval Days", "You Better Know", and "You’re Love Means More to Me Than Gold", as well as Guitar Slim’s "It Hurts To Love Someone". King has never been a flamboyant guitarist in the manner of Guitar Slim, rather his carefully crafted, thoughtful solos serve to enhance his lyrics and vocals rather than dominate them.

When Clifford Antone talks about the blues, folks listen. And when he speaks, he uses superlatives that he has earned the right to use. For the last quarter-century, the Port Arthur native has struggled to give blues a home and at the end of the century, the club, a record store and recording label bear his name in Austin. Not too shabby for a man who just wanted to give back a little of what he got from the blues.

"One of the things I have been trying to deal with all my life is why we don't honor these great musicians. It's just a real shame. How can anybody see Barbara Lynn and not want to make her one of the biggest stars in America?" Sadly, the ailing reply is that artists like Barbara Lynn, Lazy Lester, and Lavelle White aren't heard enough.

Fortunately, Cliff's Picks will remedy that social ill with 16 of the finest doses of the blues recorded over the last 15 years from performers like Memphis Slim and Eddie Taylor to Sue Foley. "I recorded everyone - Angela, James Cotton, even recorded a Kim Wilson album before 1986", says Clifford Antone. "There is so much history in the Antone's vaults, it's unbelievable." Small wonder then that Clifford Antone's label asked him to choose his favorites. /Excerpt from the liner notes

(Note: There is also another version of this album entitled "Cliff's Picks", also released in 2000, containing 14 tracks plus a bonus track featuring a 15 minutes interview with Clifford Antone.)

Earl King & Roomful Of Blues - Glazed

9. Mardi Gras In New Orleans (3:05)
10. There's Been Some Lonely, Lonely Nights (3:17)
11. One Step Beyond Love (3:39)

Earl King and Roomful of Blues fit like a hand inside a glove and this is the proof. The New England-based band frequently played Tipitina’s in the early 1980s, and producer Hammond Scott and myself would pick Earl up at the Tastee Donuts shop on Louisiana Avenue and usher him over to 501 Napoleon on those evenings. Anyone who saw and heard Earl jam with Roomful there will tell you that it was some of the most memorable music they ever heard. Getting Earl together with the band in the studio was no-brainer. He had a book full of great new material for the 1986 session and it’s displayed here.

The set opens with the magnificent “It All Went Down the Drain,” a song that describes a doomed love affair in a way only Earl King could. In fact love — the lack of it, the procurement of it, the retention of it, and the management of it — is a common theme here, as songs like “Love Rent,” “Iron Cupid” and “Three Can Play the Game” demonstrate. King covers himself a couple times — ”I Met a Stranger” and “Lonely, Lonely Nights” — and there’s even a “new” Carnival song, “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” (King pronounced it “Mardi Graws”).

With five horns, Roomful of Blues provided a big, punchy sound, and they covered the quirky rhythms King demanded to a tee. In fact, there’s only one straight blues and that’s the instrumental “Somebody’s Got a Tail.” Needless to say, the success of Glazed got King out of the donut shop a lot more as he toured Japan and Europe after its release. Even though Black Top issued two more King albums, he wouldn’t surpass these recordings. This is one of the 10 best New Orleans R&B albums recorded in the last 30 years. If you missed this the first time around or you want a reminder of how talented Earl King was, you should be all over this one. /Jeff Hannusch, OffBeat Magazine

The son of a blues pianist, King became an accomplished guitarist and singer with local bands before making his first recordings in 1953 for Savoy Records (‘Have You Gone Crazy’, credited to Earl Johnson) and Specialty Records (‘A Mother’s Love’). Strongly influenced by Guitar Slim, during the mid-50s he worked with Huey Smith’s band and recorded his biggest hit, ‘Those Lonely Lonely Nights’, with Smith on piano; this was on Johnny Vincent’s Ace Records label, for whom King was house guitarist. In 1958, he made a version of ‘Everyone Has To Cry Sometime’ as Handsome Earl. He went on to record for Rex and Imperial Records where he made ‘Come On’ aka ‘Let The Good Times Roll’ and the R&B hits ‘Always A First Time’ and ‘Trick Bag’ (1962) which featured King’s influential guitar figures. He was also starting to enjoy success as a songwriter, composing the Lee Dorsey hit ‘Do-Re-Mi’, ‘He’s Mine’ for Bernadine Washington, ‘Big Chief’ recorded by Professor Longhair and ‘Teasin’ You’, Willie Tee’s 1965 R&B hit. Jimmy Clanton, Dr. John and Fats Domino were others who recorded King compositions.

During the 60s and early 70s, King himself made recordings for Amy, Wand Records, Atlantic Records and Motown Records, although the Allen Toussaint-produced Atlantic session was not released until 1981 and the Motown tracks remain unissued. King remained active in later decades, recording for the Black Top label, including a session with Roomful Of Blues. King died in April 2003 of complications from diabetes.

A compilation of tremendous New Orleans R&B and soul recordings in the post-Fats Domino era by Cosimo Code website founders: author John Broven, Red Soul Detective Kelly and John Sir Shambling Ridley. The website (www.cosimocode.com) is devoted to collating the 1960s recordings made at the studios of Grammy winner and hall of famer Cosimo Matassa. The master number code was cracked by Scotsman Davie Gordon with help from Ace Records Peter Gibbon, and inspired by the New Orleans Rhythm & Blues Record Label Listings publication by Ace's Ray Topping.

The newly remastered pivotal New Orleans hits by Jessie Hill, Lee Dorsey, Robert Parker and Aaron Neville are joined by influential local recordings by Earl King, Reggie Hall, Danny White, Oliver Morgan, Willie Tee and Johnny Adams. The Eddie Bo and Inez Cheatham track is a big funk anthem. Among the lesser-known recordings are those by the Party Boys, Joe Haywood, Dave Bartholomew (with a hot remake of his favourite, The Monkey ) and Ronnie Barron (whose Did She Mention My Name is written and produced by Mac Dr John Rebennack). Features stellar producers Allen Toussaint, Harold Battiste, Dave Bartholomew and notably Wardell Quezergue, with outstanding session men including Nat Perilliat and Red Tyler (saxes), George Davis (guitar) and Smokey Johnson (drums).

Highly respected around his Crescent City home base as both a performer and a songwriter, guitarist Earl King was a prime New Orleans R&B force for more than four decades. Born Earl Johnson, the youngster considered the platters of Texas guitarists T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown almost as fascinating as the live performances of local luminaries Smiley Lewis and Tuts Washington. King met his major influence and mentor, Guitar Slim, at the Club Tijuana, one of King's favorite haunts (along with the Dew Drop, of course), and the two became fast friends. Still billed as Earl Johnson, the guitarist debuted on wax in 1953 on Savoy with "Have You Gone Crazy" (with pal Huey "Piano" Smith making the first of many memorable supporting appearances on his platters).

Johnson became Earl King upon signing with Specialty the next year (label head Art Rupe intended to name him King Earl, but the typesetter reversed the names). "A Mother's Love," King's first Specialty offering, was an especially accurate Guitar Slim homage produced by Johnny Vincent, who would soon launch his own label, Ace Records, with King one of his principal artists. King's first Ace single, the seminal two-chord south Louisiana blues "Those Lonely, Lonely Nights" proved a national R&B hit (despite a soundalike cover by Johnny "Guitar" Watson). Smith's rolling piano undoubtedly helped make the track a hit.

King remained with Ace through the rest of the decade, waxing an unbroken string of great New Orleans R&B sides with the unparalleled house band at Cosimo's studio. But he moved over to Imperial to work with producer Dave Bartholomew in 1960, cutting the classic "Come On" (also known as "Let the Good Times Roll") and 1961's humorous "Trick Bag," and managing a second chart item in 1962 with "Always a First Time." King wrote stand-out tunes for Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, and Lee Dorsey during the '60s. Although a potential 1963 pact with Motown was scuttled at the last instant, King admirably rode out the rough spots during the late '60s and '70s. In the '90s, he rejuvenated his career by signing with Black Top; 1990's Sexual Telepathy, and Hard River to Cross three years later, were both superlative albums. He died in April 2003 of complications from diabetes. /Bio by Bill Dahl, AllMusic
