Big George Jackson Blues Band - Southern In My Soul

Year: 2004
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 46:27
Size: 107,0 MB
Styles: Blues, harmonica blues
Scans: Full

1. Southern In My Soul (4:09)
2. I've Done More For You Baby (2:27)
3. Blue Sky (4:31)
4. Go For A Ride (3:09)
5. Crosseyed Annie (4:26)
6. Love So Strong (5:43)
7. Biscuits 'N' Molasses (3:47)
8. I'm Sorry (4:38)
9. Amtrak (4:44)
10. You Ain't All That (3:27)
11. Argue, Fuss 'N' Fight (5:21)

Big George Jackson might be based in the north, but his heart is very firmly below the Mason-Dixon line. Along with his band, the singer and harp player belts out some very raw blues, with a groove that simply won't quit - just listen to the cover of Otis Smothers' "I've Done More for You, Baby" for an example. But there's more to the band. Jackson not only has a wonderful deep voice, but a very strong turn of phrase in his lyrics, while there are no meandering solos in the group - everything is razor sharp, as typified by guitarists Jeremy Johnson and Phil Schmid, who never use ten notes when one will suffice. The album was recorded in their home studio, but the sound is as full as anything done somewhere more expensive. It may be blues straight down the line, yet it's anything but by the numbers. /Chris Nickson, AllMusic

Big George Jackson - Beggin' Ain't For Me

Year: 1998
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 48:33
Size: 112,0 MB
Styles: Electric blues, harmonica blues
Scans: Full

1. Beggin' Ain't For Me (4:30)
2. Rubbish Truck (4:08)
3. Shake Your Moneymaker (5:28)
4. Ela May (3:03)
5. Ooh Wee Baby (4:44)
6. Lookin' To Steal Somebody (5:09)
7. Fat's Jump (5:11)
8. Fee Fi Fo Fam (7:26)
9. Kitchen Sink Boogie (4:03)
10. I'm A Big Man (4:47)

Revered songwriter Big George Jackson's songs didn't have the same snap, crackle, and pop when he recorded them himself - they always came off better when sung by other singers. Jackson's low voice wasn't the best vehicle to sell the hearty Southern dramas he wrote so prolifically; it was better suited for uptempo blues, the material that comprises the lion's share of Beggin' Ain't for Me. He wrote eight of the ten songs, but the most lively numbers are Elmore James' "Shake Your Moneymaker" and "Kitchen Sink Boogie" (credited to a trio of writers) with its strong lead guitar play.

Jackson's no spring chicken, but "Ella May" sounds as if a much older man is singing; the lyrics don't get much more complex than, "Ella May what you got cookin' today." "Looking to Steal Somebody" is so deliberate that you have time to insert alternate lyrics before Jackson sings the ones he wrote. Jackson helps his cause by blowing a fiery harp on many selections. If you're looking for an album of jumping blues, this is top shelf, but those expecting to hear Jackson the writer of "I'm Just a Prisoner," "Cheatin' in the Next Room," and "Find 'Em, Fool 'Em, Forget 'Em" will still be looking after this CD is done playing. /Andrew Hamilton, AllMusic

Various - Hi Records: The Blues Sessions (2-Disc Set)

"Note: certain tracks on this release have been dubbed from the best copies of the original discs available - resulting in a slight difference in sound quality."

Hi Records is one of the jewels in the municipal crown of Memphis. In its glorious history, Hi Records ran the gamut from instrumental hits by Bill Black's Combo and Ace Cannon to intimate rhythm and blues by Al Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay and Syl Johnson. Hi boasted its own killer rhythm section - the Hodges brothers with drummer Howard Grimes, as well as a horn section that featured the best players in town. With the rest of the label's support group such as songwriters Teenie Hodges, Earl Randle, and Donald Bryant, and master producer and A&R man Willie Mitchell…Hi had it all - charismatic stars, innovative producers, brilliant session players, prolific composers. Hi Records was a hit factory that is as alive today as it ever was, constantly repackaged and reissued, an inspiration to new generations of musicians and fans.

Vocalist/harmonicaplayer Big George Jackson was born November 16, 1949 and in the Twin Cities he is known as the Authentic big man of the blues. He sings with a distinctive bass-rich voice only a six-foot, six inch gentle giant could be blessed with. Add his fat harmonica playing, dead-on phrasing, commanding stage-presence and instant audience rapport and it’s easy to understand why the audience howl when he delivers his music.

The band features two great guitarists: Jeremy Johnson (formely with Mischo) and Phil Schmid (formely with Lynwood Slim) combine tough-as-nails interplay that can alternate between being greasy, swinging and raunchy The band writes its own music, with lyrics written by Big George and they also cover songs by Jimmy Reed, Walter Hornton, Muddy Waters and Big Leon Brooks. In 1998 the band released a CD Beggin Ain’t for Me on Black and Tan Records and in 2001 their second Black and Tan CD. The CD is titled Big Shot. Critics praised Big George’s CD for originality and welcome sense of humor. The Big George Jackson Band is considered to be a great up and coming band and is developing a fast growing following in spite of the incredibly competitive live music scene.

Big George has been working for Minnesgasco, the local gas company in Minneapolis. He has raised six children while pursuing his night-time career as a blues musician. His first european tour took place in November >99 and it was a huge success. Most of the venues had a large crowd and at the bluesfestivals in Luzern (Switzerland) and Unna (Germany) Big George proved to be one of the surprises of the event. During their european tour in April/May 2000 the band performed at he Moulin Blues Festival in Ospel (NL) and at the bluesfestivals of Silkeborg and Odense (DK). The band did two more succesfull european tours in March and November 2001. On the last tour they performed on the Lucerne Blues Festival (CH) and on the Blues Estafette (NL), two of the major blues events in Europe. They also did a live show on national Dutch tv.

In 2002 they performed at the Belgian Rhythm & Blues Festival in Peer (Belgium) and the Colne Bluesfestival in the UK and in 2003 they played at the International Jazzfestival in Montreal (Canada) and Nancy Jazz Pulsations (France). In October 2003 they released their third CD (Southern In My Soul) for Black and Tan Records.

miXendorp is the project of one man from the Netherlands, who’s dedicated to updating the blues for present times. His recent release on European label Black And Tan Records is prefaced with exciting potential: “The blues used to be party music; now it can be played again at the hippest modern parties, festival and clubs….. and still feel down home.”

The description for Black And Tan Edits reads a bit like an infomercial, and there are some cheese qualities here for sure. But the blues have been bastardized and neglected plenty in the present day, and these musical spins are at least unconventionally fun party music that remind one of the heyday of the genre.

miXendorp describes his mixes as “blues + beat”, and the combination is apt; he applies everything from house beats and new age percussion to classic singer-songwriter blues. Such modern day genre-mashing turns the blues into club-ready hits which feel so much like a merging of two worlds that it becomes important to remember that the originals are not relics of the past; they are in fact fairly recent, pulled from the past 14 years of releases by Black And Tan.
