Wallenstein was described in reviews as the “father of the Hamburg blues scene” and “living legend of the blues”. Characteristic of his playing is his picking style, which is in the tradition of Piedmont Blues or Texas Country Blues, for example Mance Lipscomb. The Delta Blues slide guitar is also part of his repertoire. His guitars, tuned in open tuning , have eight strings inspired by Big Joe Williams , which, together with his authentic blues voice, creates his special sound. Abi Wallenstein at a Blues & Boogie session with Jessy Martens and Henry Heggen in 2016 Wallenstein has been on stage as a blues interpreter since 1966 and has played in a number of bands since then. He performed with musicians such as Joja Wendt , Vince Weber , Inga Rumpf , Axel Zwingenberger and Tom Shaka . He has appeared at numerous blues and boogie festivals, such as the Ascona Jazz Festival and Monopoly (Italy), the Lahnsteiner Blues Festival as well as festivals in Aurillac, Chedigny and St. Aignan (France), Vienna and Wels (Austria), in Olsztyn and Toruń (Poland). He performed as support for musicians such as Joe Cocker , Christy Moore , Fats Domino , Robben Ford, Eric Burdon and Johnny Winter . Wallenstein still plays actively in constantly changing formations, including in the band “Blues Culture” with Steve Baker (harmonica, background vocals) and Martin Röttger (cajon, percussion). Also with “Prof. Washboard” (washboard, drums and percussion) as well as the Kiel blues musicians Georg Schroeter (piano) and Marc Breitfelder (harmonica) and in various duo concerts, for example with the saxophonist Kurt Buschmann . As part of his social commitment, in 2001 he gave a concert for homeless people at a Christmas party in the Pik As overnight shelter in Hamburg and forewent the fee.

11 Nathan James, Víctor Puertas - Come What May (3:19)
12 Jens Turowski, Gary Winters, Tommy Schneller - Give Me My Heart Back (3:03)

This may be an authentic-sounding blues CD but it has emerged in a most unusual way courtesy of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing and lockdown of normal activities, including live music and recording. As a result German-based British harmonica player Roger C. Wade got these tracks together with artists from eight countries sending their contributions via the internet. In fact some of the musicians had never actually met the people they are playing with! Roger first contacted other German blues players like guitarist Kai Strauss and saxophonist Tommy Schneller but then also added artists from the UK, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Finland and France. He then followed this by getting contributions from several top American players including Larry Garner, Fred Kaplan, Nathan James, Aki Kumar and Big Daddy Wilson.

There is a great variety of styles here from the jump blues of the opener 'Lockdown Blues' - "Strange times we live in, just keep keeping to yourself" to the Chicago band blues of 'Can't Get Too Close' and 'Personal Shutdown' which also both tell lockdown stories - "I've got to love my baby from six feet away..." Abi Wallenstein & Roger Wade do a nice acoustic cover of Son House's very appropriate 'Death Letter Blues' and there is more nice acoustic blues from Little Victor and Kai Strauss, with Black Patti and US harp star Joe Filisko closing the first CD with the low down and dirty 'Be Ready When He Comes'. CD2 starts with a bang with Larry Garner and company, Tommy Schneller blows a nice bluesy instrumental and Christian Bleiming plays beautiful boogie boogie piano. Big Daddy Wilson contributes some soulful gospel, as does the wonderful Veronica Sbergia on 'I Can Tell The World'. And the quality carries on right to the last tracks courtesy of Aki Kumar and Nathan James and especially Jens Turowski whose closing track 'Give Me My Heart Back' is one of the collections' many highlights. Roger deserves much praise for getting this collection of tracks together it is completely successful and I hope that it makes lots of money for the musicians involved. ~G.E. Harrison

Inga Rumpf was one of the best-known German R&B singers. Her voice often drew comparisons to Janis Joplin, but Rumpf was able to develop her own unique vocal style. Catapulted to stardom in the ‘70s with her band Frumpy, she released a number of highly acclaimed solo works in the ‘80s and ‘90s and came to be regarded as the grand old lady of German R&B. Whereas other German female vocalists such as Nina Hagen faded away over time, Rumpf consequently followed her path and never compromised herself artistically.

At FeelGoodBoogie, the blues' friend may think of Chicago or Memphis. In fact, behind this project title, which is programmatic for the performance of their concerts, hides three high-caliber Blues: Abi Wallenstein, Günther Brackmann and Martin Röttger.

Abi, Günther and Martin play since 2004 in this cast together. These rather irregular appearances have matured the interplay of these three personalities over the years, each bringing its own individual quality and yet always dedicated to the trio as a 'groove community'.
Abi, as a master of the atmosphere, prepares the spaces that Martin opens up with a sure-footed drumming and his sensitive feel for dynamics. Abi and Günther fill this tension of the spaces with their solos, in the course of which the entire improvisational experience of the trio becomes audible. These processes of interaction can not be rehearsed or reproduced. They are the result of the special moment, characterized by the mood of the audience, the atmosphere of the room as well as the dedication and passion of the musicians.
The result is unique interpretations of original Bluestitel, which extend in a pleasant way the stylistic devices of the genre and the blues thus return its relevance. Abi Wallenstein plays a special role here as someone who feels the energies on stage as well as the audience and brings them together in his inimitable way.

Her performances are part of a special kind of improvisational concert that uses well-known titles as the basis of her own joy in playing and thus creates special moments - for the musicians as well as for the listener.

Abi Wallenstein (guitar, slide guitar, vocals)
Joja Wendt (grand piano)

Abi Wallenstein can be called the "living legend" of Hamburg's music scene. No German musician within the last 30 years plays the blues so authenticly. Since 1966 the "father of the Hamburg blues scene" played in several bands (Pussy, Bad News Reunion) and with some famous musicians like Vince Weber, Inga Rumpf, Axel Zwingenberger and others.

Abi had his first performing expierences during the early 60's in North-Rhine-Westphalia where he played in several rock bands. In the mid-60's he moved to Hamburg and started to play on his own with his 12-string guitar in Danny's Pan, Jazzhouse and Onkel Pö. Later he was joined by harmonica player Tiny Hagen and keyboardist Peter Urban. Soon he started to play in rhythym-and-blues bands with Gottfried Böttger and Vince Weber, to name a few.

Throughout the years Abi developed a characteristic guitar style wich combines rhythmic blues lines with chord and melody lines at the same time. His guitar playing seems to be simple but at a closer look it proves to be very complex and multi-layered. There is a swinging groove, wich makes you forget about normal rhythm sections like bass and drums.

Even though it could be an awkard cliché to label the voice of a white singer "black", Abi sings the blues naturally overdoing it. He captures the audience in no time because of his magnetic stage presence. When he's not touring he plays in the streets. "The street is his own testing ground and practica area" Uli Lemke writes in the liner notes of Abi's new CD "Blues Avenue". He is the only famous European musician who is constantly looking fot the closest contact to his audiance on toughest stage of the world.

He's played many blues festivals like Ascona Jazz Festival, Gaildorf Blues Festival, Lahnstein SWF Blues Festival, Kemptener Jazzfrühling, Lehrter Blues Festival, Unna Blues Festival, Breminale to name a few. He is also a well liked guest on TV and radio shows. He opened up very successfully for
Joe Cocker, Christie Moore, Daniel Lanois, Fats Domino, Robben Ford, George Thorogood und Jonny Winter.
