Based in Madrid, the celebrated self-taught guitarist Susan Santos announces her new album Sonora. Her sixth album, Sonora is based on the desert and all it’s known for. The hot-handed guitar player, singer and songwriter shares her new single “Hot Rod Lady” that screams gritty guitar and catchy riffs. About a female who is most at home in a hot rod driving down the highway at warped speed, she sings of freedom and the feeling that driving in expansive spaces allows. With plenty of swagger, Santos presses the pedal to the metal with her guitar chops too. “I’m so thirsty I could lose my mind,” she sings, and you sense power and determination in her voice.

Sonora is the album of the desert, and the desert people. The songs tell stories ranging from survival, thirst, outlaws, escape, and freedom against a backdrop of scorpions, lizards, and roadrunners. And of course the dry heat and wind. The video was filmed at Joshua Tree National Park in California.

All songs on Sonora were composed by Susan Santos. Recorded as a trio, the album features David Salvador (bass) and Juli El Lento (drums). Santos sang lead vocals and played electric, baritone, and acoustic guitars, banjo, and theremin. The album was recorded at Black Betty Studios, Madrid and produced by Santos and Jose Nortes.

The gifted Spanish guitarist and singer songwriter has spent years performing in famous establishments and venues, and numerous festivals throughout Europe, Mexico, and America.

She has shared the stage with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and won “Best Musician Performance” at the 2018 European Blues Awards, and “Best Female Album” at the 2019 LA Critics’ Awards.

Susan Santos - The L.A. Sessions

Size: 106 MB
Time: 14:35
File: FLAC
Released: 2020
Styles: Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. Dirty Money (3:19)
02. Somebody To Love (4:00)
03. Fever (3:48)
04. Wait (3:26)

Personnel:
Susan Santos: Guitar, Vocals
Fabrizio Grossi: Bass, Background Vocals
Tony Morra: Drums

Susan recorded “The L.A. Sessions” during December 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

Described by Blues Blast as a “guitar hero” Susan’s “The L.A. Sessions” EP follows hot on the heels of her 2019 album “No U Turn” which saw Susan win “Best Performer” at the European Blues Awards and “Best Album Female” at the LA Critics’ Awards.

Dirty Money:
We are on the edge of the Wild West. In the Golden State. Destiny of visionaries, romantics, and dreamers. But there is little left of the glamour of old Hollywood. Behind the bright scenery all sorts of uses and abuses are perpetrated. Everything comes at a price. The protagonist of the song is a man obsessed with money and power. It is the city of the Black Dahlia, the dark Hollywood of James Elroy and Raymond Chandler. The city of dirty money and corpses buried in the desert.

Somebody To Love:
In the stools of the bar of this song the ghosts of all the barflies that one day went in to drown their solitudes are torn down. There is the Oma of Fat City and the Wanda Wilcox who, for a time, accompanied Chinaski in his drunken misadventures. They have come, they have fought and tomorrow they will continue to give the callus. Tough women who, at times, however, break. It is the last song of the jukebox. The voice of Alice Hyatt in Alicia no longer lives here. It is not much to ask, just a hug before resuming the road to Monterrey (or until the next bar).

Fever:
If you lift the hood of this song you find a powerful 440 V8 engine with six-body carburetor. It is the engine of the Dodge Challenger of Vanishing Point and Death Proof. Susan does not lay down at the bar or let herself languish in a cheap motel room. She always has her car parked in front of the door and knows and understands that the road has no end. Life is a road movie. Their riffs smell like asphalt, tar, and overheated oil. Always listen to your fever. Don’t let anyone hold your horses.

Wait:
This song is the crossroads to which you arrive staggering and undecided and where the devil awaits you with a guitar and a smile. The city cannot be more ungrateful. In La-la-land everything is possible and is about to happen: either you hit the jackpot, or you end up losing your shirt. It does not matter. Resist. Even if it is a short walk, keep going without looking back. Ride the night. Turn the corner. Hang on and wait for the new day.

01. Rattlesnake (3:47)
02. Goin' Down South (3:27)
03. Red Lips (3:28)
04. Sunset's Glaze (4:24)
05. Dusty Road (3:57)

07. Skin & Bones (3:26)
08. Stop Drivin' Me Crazy (5:41)
09. Right On Time (3:51)

A great passion for the music led Susan Santos to learn, in a self-taught way, how to play guitar and sing. Step by step the lefty guitarist and singer was creating her own songs and her particular style of understanding the music. After several groups, and two discs recorded, in 2009, she moved to Madrid and formed "Susan Santos Band", her more energetic project, a power trio that mixes blues and rock with funky brushstrokes.
She has had an intense year of concerts in important clubs and played several international festivals where she shared the stage with the likes of Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Louis Walker, or Buddy Whittington. Last June she flew to Chicago and was invited to play concerts in clubs like Buddy Guy Legends, Rosa's Lounge, Kingston Mines, B.L.U.E.S. and jammed with Sugar Blue (harp of the Rolling Stones).
Susan's outstanding voice and appealing guitar style, along with her strong stage presence is very refreshing in the contemporary blues scene.
