America-born blues artists Dov Hammer and Sagi "CG" Shorer first met in Tel Aviv in 1999. By then each had paid plenty of "blues dues", leading their own bands, grinding through the bar circuit, and backing visiting blues artists such as Billy Branch, Zora Young, Deitra Farr, Paul deLay, Lucky Peterson and King Earnest Baker. Since then, collaborating as "CG & The Hammer", they have played hundreds of shows in clubs, concert halls and international festivals. They have toured the USA three times, including representing Israel twice at the International Blues challenge in Memphis, TN.

"Something Good" is the band's fourth album. After more then a decade of playing blues in Israel, the band decided to return to the source, and made the pilgrimage to Memphis TN, where they recorded 12 new songs at the historic "Sun" studio. In this special atmosphere, recording where B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Ike Turner, Elvis, Johnny Cash and others had made their great hits, the band tapped into the magical source of the music which has inspired them. The result is CG & The Hammer's best album to date, a unique melding of blues, rock 'n' roll and country, with the band's own original songwriting, passionate vocals, wailing harmonica and fiery guitar.

Personnel: Sagi Shorer (vocals, guitar); Dov Hammer (harmonica, backing vocals); Nir Elbaz (bass); Oren Avisar (drums).

We are proud to present "Live in Tel Aviv" - the 3rd album by CG & The Hammer. Celebrating 10 years of playing together, this album presents the great musicianship, and powerful live energy of the band. Their dynamic stage performance showcases original songs by the band, as well as blues classics from Willie Dixon to Slim Harpo. When Dov Hammer and Sagi "CG" Shorer, two America-born bluesmen first met in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1999, both had already paid plenty of dues, both as sidemen (sharing stages with such blues greats as Willie Kent, Paul deLay, Zora Young, Billy Branch and the late King Earnest Baker among others) and leading their own bands. The two soon joined forces to create the group now known as "CG & The Hammer".

While deeply rooted in the blues styles of Chicago and Texas, the band has never tried to copy a "classic" sound, instead updating and continuing the evolution of the blues and giving it their own unique flavor. They have toured the USA three times, visiting Ohio and Chicago in 2004 and touring Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee in 2005, including festival performances at the River City Blues Festival in Ohio and the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN. In 2009 they returned to the south, playing in Alabama, Florida and making an unforgettable appearance at the International Blues Challenge, as well as being chosen for the "Kings of Beale Street" show in Memphis.

Their first album "Feels Like Home" was released in 2002 to great critical acclaim, featuring 12 new original blues songs. In 2008 they released their 2nd album "Blues Heaven", which was chosen by the Blues Foundation in Memphis as one of the top 12 independent blues albums of the year. From bars to festivals to concert halls, CG & The Hammer continue to thrill audiences with a combination of passion, energy and honesty. Their music is never a re-creation of sounds from the past, but rather an updated, vital celebration of the blues as the soundtrack of real life.

Dov Hammer has been at the forefront of the blues scene in Israel for 30 years. Formerly the frontman for "The Blues Rebels", "The Daily Blues" and "CG & The Hammer", he has returned to performing under his own name playing acoustic and electric Chicago-style blues. His original music has appeared on 9 albums, most recently on “BlueSoul” released in the summer of 2019. Over the years he has played with many great blues artists including Joe Louis Walker, Lucky Peterson, Bernard Allison, Zora Young, Deitra Farr, Billy Branch, "King" Ernest Baker, Paul deLay, Hans Theesink, Jimmy Johnson and others.

Originally from the USA, now living in Tel Aviv, Hammer played bass in several rock bands as a high school student. He switched to the harmonica while serving in the Israeli army, finding it much more practical to carry around than the bass guitar, and immediately fell in love with the pocket-sized soulful instrument which he found perfect for blues expression. After a year of busking on the streets in the USA and Ireland, Dov Hammer joined the band of Canadian blues artist Ted Cooper for four years of non-stop blues.

He has played at the prestigious Rochester (NY) Jazz Festival in 2005 and toured eastern Europe, playing at the “Blues Nights” festival in Lithuania in 2007. In 2013 and 2017 he performed in Germany with CG & The Hammer and The Blues Rebels respectively. Dov Hammer has also played onstage and on the recordings of many top Israeli pop artists, such as Yahli Sobol, Shai Gavso, Miki Gavrielov, and Arkadi Duchin with whom he recorded a TV special. His harmonica playing is also featured on many TV commercials and film soundtracks.

SOBO is legendary in Israel for its powerful and energetic mix of blues, rock, R&B and funk coupled with a unique sound of slide guitar. Whether they’re playing a cover tune or an original, that SOBO “crunch” is ever present. The band was founded in 1995 by song-writing team Assaf Ganzman and Daniel Kriman. The two met when Daniel was playing at a Jerusalem Rock-’n’-Blues bar. Sammy and Daniel jammed together for the first time that night and have been a musical team ever since.

It was SOBO’s inspired blues jams and intense funk rhythms that helped found the still-growing Israeli blues scene. The band performed at venues all through Israel and the Netherlands during the 90s, and recorded their first album in 1998, which was received very positively in Israel. In 2004 SOBO was chosen to represent Israel in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN under the banner of Blues For Peace. While at the Challenge SOBO was spotted and immediately hired to play at the Blues City Cafe on Memphis’ World Famous Beale street, where Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Albert King, and many other bluesmen have played.

SOBO released their third Album “Catfish Boogie” in winter 2014 receiving much AirPlay in Israel, Russia and the U.S.A. They have shared the stage with: Sonny Landreth, Marcus King, Gov’t Mule, Anna Popovic, Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne, John Lee Hooker Jr., Oli Brown, JC Smith, Alvon Johnson, Robert Lighthouse, Candye Kane & Laura Chaves, Lil Jimmy Reed, Sharon Lewis, Sergey Voronov, Blues Company and many other great blues players.

Dov Hammer is Israel's leading blues artist. Born and raised in Chicago, Hammer now resides in Tel Aviv, Israel. Over the years, as well as leading his own bands, he has also shared stages with some of the best American blues artists, including Paul deLay, Billy Branch, Zora Young and the late King Earnest Baker.

After years of performing and recording with electric Blues bands, Dov Hammer felt the urge to return to his roots and play acoustic music. For the past two years he has held a steady Sunday night acoustic show at Tel Aviv's only blues club "Mike's Place". Accompanied by guitar virtuoso Ronnie Katz, Hammer utilized the stripped-down format to highlight the emotional power of the blues.

The intensity and showmanship of these shows has attracted a steady and growing number of fans, and prompted the recording of this album. Recorded and produced by guitarist Ronnie Katz, "Going Deep" features 12 original songs, many of them written in the wake of and under the influence of the tragic terrorist bombing of "Mike's place" - the duo's "home club".

The album features Hammer's songwriting prowess. Never content to repeat blues clichés, he uses the blues tradition as a platform for personal expression, while seasoning it with influences of other musical forms, such as country, bluegrass and rock. Guest appearances are made on the album, by Hammer's former band mates, local rock and blues artist Danny Zuckerman, and slide maestro Assaf "Sweettooth" Rozov.

Dov Hammer - BlueSoul

Year: 2019

Time: 40:10
Size: 92,4 MB
Styles: Blues, harmonica blues
Scans: Front

1. Make It Count (3:41)

8. King (3:53)
9. Dance The Blues (2:56)
10. Taking My Time (2:23)
11. BlueSoul (4:26)

Welcome to the Blue Soul of Dov Hammer - and get ready for some some hipshakin', heartbreakin', earthquakin' blues! For almost 30 years Dov Hammer has plied his trade as singer, songwriter and harmonica player in various bands such as The Blues Rebels, CG & The Hammer and the Daily Blues, as well as backing top notch artists such as Joe Louis Walker, Lucky Peterson, Bernard Allison and many others.

Now comes "BlueSoul", Dov Hammer's new album, the first recorded under his own name since 2004's "Going Deep". While that album was strictly stripped-down, raw acoustic blues, "BlueSoul" is a bubbling pot of blues gumbo - a variety of styles ranging from Chicago to New Orleans, from traditional to modern and all points in between, all anchored by Hammer's soulful vocals, soaring harmonica and unique songwriting. The songs deal with love and loss, going through challenges and changes and enduring trials and tribulations with grit and determination and some hard earned humor.

The album kicks off with classic Chicago style blues shuffle in "Make It Count", then immediately heads south for some New orleans "second line" party music in "I'm Gone". Some heavy blues-rock is at play on "Find A Way" and "Magic" (featuring the fantastic lap-steel slide of Ori Beanstock), while Hammer features his chromatic harmonica on the tongue-in-cheek, jump Bblues of "Bad Luck Charm".

"The "Fighting Blues" is a stark, Skip James style Delta Blues, while "Tear It Down" rocks and rolls like a freight train rumbling through the Mississippi night ... then a brief stylistic detour into country-rock as Hammer and special guest Assaf Rozov pay homage to their late friend and mentor "King" Earnest Baker on "King".

"Dance The Blues" is another Chicago Blues, paying tribute to the slow grinding pleasure of the blues dancers. "Taking My Time" is a raunchy, semi-electronic bluesy love song, then the album signs off with the autobiographical title track, a melding of blues and hip-hop featuring Dov Hammer's daughter Naomi Jo Hammer on the soul chorus.

9. It's A Man's World (Feat. Roy Young) (7:34)
10. A True Friend (Is Hard To Find) (Feat. Eleanor Tsaig) (3:51)

Oldschool Chicago blues & soul album, produced and arranged by Ori Naftaly. The album was recorded on four dates, of 4-5 hours. Recorded live and mixed at LUNA Studios, the album reflects the power, soul, feel and energy that are present every time Ori Naftaly and his band come together on stage for a blues & soul concert. The album features a group of guests from London, Chicago, Colorado and Israel who lead the Israeli blues scene today.

"When I realized it was the right time to begin this production, I decided to produce an album that would bring me back to who I am and where I came from. Since I was a child I would listen and play along with old Blues records from the collection we had at home, and it became the sound of my childhood. Since then I grew into different music genres, but with this album I went back to the blues.

I am blessed to have great musicians who played with me in this project, my band and singers. They all inspire me to continue what I'm doing. It was important for me to record the songs live, with hardly any overdubing, so we could create a more dynamic and geniune sound. Basically as close as we could get to the old Muddy Waters albums I used to listen to. It is a combination of the 2012 sound, and songs from the 1920's and the 1960's." /Ori Naftaly

Some music seems to be a melting pot of sounds and ideas that takes some unravelling, if you’re that sort of person, one who feels the need to explore what’s under the musical hood of the car. I’m a reviewer so I am that sort of person. Other music paints instant pictures and conjures immediate imagery, so much so that you can instantly see what you are dealing with. Kalo are the latter type of band.

Right from the first bar you can picture them in some Southern roadhouse or dive bar firing off salvos of raw, bluesy, roots rock…groovesome r’n’b meets old-school rock and roll. A timeless rock sound that never goes out of fashion because it was never in fashion, just constant, ever present and undiminished. It is sassy, sexy and soulful and like all great trio’s gets its power from three musicians all contributing equally, nothing is wasted, nothing over played and everyone gets to play a role.

It is a sound that we are familiar with for sure, but it is a sound which is normally described in reviews containing words such as classic, iconic and seminal; swaggering rock and roll, bar-band attitude and raw grooves, and wholly unapologetic about it. And why would you need to apologise about something this great? Not every song has to break down barriers, not every band needs to explore pastures new, sometimes it is good enough to take a great sound and make it your own. This is one of those times.

There is a famous quote that those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. But I would add that those who do remember the past are free to take its finest moments, hone and refine them and use them to build bridges into the future. Kalo do just that. ~by Dave Franklin

Kalo - Live In NYC

In 2009, Israeli singer/songwriter/guitarist Bat-Or Kalo left Israel to soak herself in the sounds of U.S. music. Her creative and musical Israeli family includes a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, famous musicians and war veterans.

After finishing her classical and jazz guitar studies and recording her jazz-imbued album, Flesh and Bones, in Tel-Aviv, Kalo moved to New York City to hone her skills as a live performer, frequenting stages like The Bitter End, Arlene’s Grocery, Rockwood Music Hall and others. In 2012, she left The Big Apple to strum her guitar and write in the heart of Dixie.

Her sophomore album, Dear John, took root in the Mississippi Delta and other southern states, where its blues tinge began to grow. Along the way, Kalo, the guitarist, became KALO, the band, adding Mack McKinney on bass, and later, Mike Alexander on the drums.

What audiences grow to love listening to KALO's albums, they become enthralled with while watching the songs performed live. Fiery, passionate and strong, Kalo's guitar chops and contralto voice belie her small frame, while the solid bed provided by bassist Mack McKinney and drummer Mike Alexander allows the audience to feel a heartbeat. Alexander’s electric performances alongside McKinney’s ever-steady bass provides a pocket from which the band can take off and deliver emotional and fevered performances.

A Little Rock, Ark., native, McKinney started playing guitar in his teens. He began playing bass after listening to a church bassist perform, and he’s been playing the instrument ever since. McKinney has played in punk bands and set the groove for country and rock groups, but his solid playing and backing vocals make him an important part of KALO.

Erick Worrell, an Oklahoma City native, stepped out of the role of primary drummer in 2014, but his sound and contributions continue to influence KALO's live recordings and performances. Mike Alexander took on the role of primary drummer in 2015. Alexander is a seasoned drummer, and, like Kalo, has roots in jazz as a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma's music program.

KALO made it to the semifinals of the International Blues Challenge in 2015 representing the Wichita Blues Society. In 2016, Bat-Or Kalo represented the Topeka Blues Society and made it to the semifinal round of the competition.

Andy Watts: Guitar
Amos Springer: Bass guitar
Avi Barak: Drums

In April 2012 guitarist Andy Watts invited singer/harmonica player Dov Hammer to jam with his band . A last minute cancellation of the drummer turned the show into an all-star jam with veteran drummer Alon Hillel and bassist Ilan Hillel.

The magical chemistry of that show was undeniable, and by the end of the evening a "Supergroup" had been formed - a gathering of 4 veteran musicians, with plenty of experience, who have paid their dues on hundreds of stages with the finest international artists.

With their soulful and passionate playing, the irresistible groove of the rhythm section and their incendiary stage show, the Blues Rebels have quickly captured the attention of the international Blues community. They have been chosen to play with great international stars such as Lucky Peterson, Joe Louis Walker and Bernard Allison, and were the opening act for Johnny Winter.

In January 2015, with a new lineup featuring Amos Springer on bass and Avi Barak on drums, the Blues Rebels entered the studio to record "Open road" - their first album together, featuring 14 new original songs by Dov Hammer and Andy Watts. The album was released in March 2015 and has been recieving rave reviews, and radio play throughout Europe and Israel.

In the winter of 2016 The Blues Rebels played a second Israeli tour with Joe Louis Walker, adding a fifth show after the first four were sold out. That same week theband entered the studio to record their second album "Voodoo land", with Joe Louis Walker as producer!

CG & The Hammer - 2 albums: Blues Heaven / Feels Like Home

Dov Hammer (vocals, harmonica), Sagi "CG" Shorer (vocals, guitar), Oren "Hollywood" Avisar (drums), Yuval Oz (double bass).

Dov Hammer has been at the forefront of the Blues scene in Israel for over 2 decades. Originally from the USA, now living in Tel Aviv, Hammer started playing harmonica while serving in the Israeli army, finding it much more practical to carry around then the bass guitar he had played before. After a year of busking on the streets in the USA and Ireland, Dov Hammer joined the band of Canadian blues artist Ted Cooper for four years of non-stop Blues. He formed his first band “The Daily Blues” in 1997, and for 4 years they were the house band for the “Camelot” club in Tel Aviv, backing such Blues artists as Zora Young, Billy Branch and the late great “King “ Earnest Baker. The band broke up shortly after releasing their debut album in 2000. Since then, Dov Hammer has led “CG & The Hammer” Israel’s #1 blues band, touring the USA 3 times and releasing 4 albums, as well as a solo album of acoustic blues.

"In a world where all too many guitarists get swept up by the glitter and glamour of modern rock guitar sounds, and can't seem to live without a series of guitar effect pedals in front of them, it is so refreshing to hear Noam playing without all those electronic enhancements.
Noam relies merely on his hands and the basic qualities of his amplifier to produce the sweet tones that he plays.
I think that it is more honest, in keeping with Noam's own personality." ~Eli Dr. Blues Marcus, Chairman, the Israel Blues Society

Noam Dayan has been playing professionally both electric and acoustic Blues, and keeps it’s tradition alive in Israel.
At the age of 18, Noam was introduced to the Blues and started exploring this world, studying and learning from whatever records he could find around the country.

During the next few years he played both electric and acoustic Blues with several bands before moving to Chicago in 1997.
There he had the chance to expand his musical feeling and after a while he played the Blues clubs in and out of the windy city. After coming back to his homeland, he established the Noam Dayan Blues Band, playing soulfull blend of traditional Blues, Gospel, Soul and Jazz. The band is playing on stages across Israel and considered to be one of the leading groups of authentic Blues in the country, striving to “preach” it's spirit to Israeli audiences.
Alongside Performing, Noam also teaches Blues guitar and does educational projects concerning the Blues.

For This presented album, Noam Chosed to record acoustic tunes from his live repertoire, both originals and covers of old tunes he always loved to play. Delta country Blues and Chicago Blues was few of his biggest ifluences, and as a result of the passion and respect he share for those traditions, listening to the album might take you to "A Whole New Land" !

Oz Noy - Asian Twistz

Size: 165,1 MB

Released: 2015

Art: Front

01. Get Down ( 9:21)
02. Rhumba Tumba ( 7:03)
03. Whole Tone Blues ( 7:29)
04. Downside Up (10:38)
05. Twice In A While ( 2:54)
06. Just Groove Me ( 7:03)
07. Slow Grease ( 9:08)
08. Freedom Jazz Dance ( 8:18)
09. Steroids ( 9:00)

The nine tracks of the New-York based guitarist Oz Noy’s new album are from three dates on a recent Asian tour. They were recorded with drummer Dave Weckl’s Mac laptop with minimal gear, and with no plans at the time for release.

Oz Noy crosses a number of genres and, through his use of pedals and effects, clearly aims to mark himself out as a bold new voice in jazz-fusion and blues guitar. Any album with titans Dave Weckl on drums and Etienne Mbappe on bass (recently of John McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension) has got to be worth a listen. Mbappe may be slightly subdued at times - though always technically brilliant, and Weckl’s power and rhythmic innovation stand out consistently.

Many of the tracks were featured on Noy's recent two-volume Twisted Blues, an exploration and deconstruction of the blues sound. Rhumba Tumba is an up-beat number that makes up in gusto what it lacks in any sense of innovative melodic stylings. Whole Tone Blues, though basic in structure, makes frequent use of the aforesaid whole tone scale to add a different soundscape on top of a basic 4/4 shuffle blues rhythm on which Mbappe and Weckl are as solid as iron girders. Weckl spars well with Noy on the drums/guitar intro of Downside Up, where Noy’s use of bend and pedals does stretch out his guitar sound somewhat, augmenting his complex and often explosive playing style; when Mbappe drops into the mix after a couple of minutes, this tracks pops up another level.
Perhaps the best track on the album is track eight, the Eddie Harris-penned Freedom Jazz Dance, popularised by Miles Davis’s 1966 recording. Here you can see the real potential this group: a guitar trio sound that is much more than run-of-the-mill and players who combine so instinctively and improvise so well, they have given us an album which successfully captures the band's live show, with uncluttered sound of studio quality. ~by Rob Mallows

The Blues Rebels began in 2012 as a one-time friendly jam between two veteran Blues artists – guitarist Andy Watts and singer/harmonica player Dov Hammer – but the immediate chemistry between the two and the powerful stage show that resulted was undeniable. The Blues Rebels soon became one of the hottest Blues bands on the Israeli scene, playing with world-class Blues artists such as Joe Louis Walker, Lucky Peterson and Bernard Allison. The band was also chosen to open for the legendary Johnny Winter, who told the band how impressed he was by their performance.

After 2 years of burning up stages with their incendiary live show, the Rebels began work on their first album, a compilation of 14 original songs by Dov Hammer and Andy Watts. The band set up in the studio at Kibbutz Ma'abarot and tore through the songs in three days, capturing the live energy and passion of their infamous live show. The songs feature unique and heartfelt songwriting, blazing powerhouse Blues guitar and harmonica and soulful singing. The rhythm section is funky and in the pocket, with a groove that never quits. We hope you enjoy "Open road"!

After performing at almost every major stage around the country during the past four years, the band’s debut album, also called Full Trunk, released in February 2014, was recorded in TOP SOUND studio at Migdal Ha’emek, north Israel.

The album, clearly influenced by the blues & rock genres of the 60s and 70s, made its way to the top of radio station playlists in Israel and around the world (mainly in France, Switzerland and Canada), attracting rave reviews in the music and media industries. Just recently, the Israel Blues Society selected Full Trunk album as the best Blues album for 2014 and to represent Israel in the most prestigious blues event, the International Blues Challenge held in Memphis (Tennessee), USA, the blues capital of the world. This highly esteemed nomination is most appreciated as many top Israeli blues artists also released great albums this year.

Noam Dayan was born and raised in Israel and met the Blues during the army service. Ever since then he has been playing the Blues all over Israel, from small clubs to big festivals. Along the way he spent a year in Chicago, there he shaped his musical feeling and played in and out of the city with local acts.

In 2013 his debut album "A Whole New Land" came out.
It is a solo acoustic album in which he paid tribute to the great Delta Blues musicians he love.

The present album, Noam's second release - "Corner Of Blues And The City", feels more like his "natural" first album, as it consist of all original tunes. It present an "Uptow" electric Blues with a band, brass section, Hammond Organ, special guests (Yair Dalal, Guy King, Rudi Bainesay, Eyal Kdoshim) and all the feelings and sounds that run through Noam's head for the last couple of years.
