Along with Paul Jones, Tom McGuinness, Dave Kelly and Hughie Flint (replaced by Rob Townsend in 1981) Gary Fletcher was one of the original founding members of The Blues Band in 1979. The band continues to tour and release new material. A significant contributor of material to The Blues Band’s catalogue – the band’s anthemic ‘Greenstuff’ is one of his songs.

In addition he has appeared with and/or recorded with Peter Green, Long John Baldry, Kim Simmonds, Maggie Bell, Chris Barber, Van Morrison, Henry McCullough, Colin Allen, Zoot Money and Linda Gail Lewis amongst others.

He started to work as a solo singer/songwriter around 2003/4 releasing ‘The Official Gary Fletcher Bootleg’ CD on the Hypertension label in 2004.This was basically a collection of the demos of songs he’d pitched to The Blues Band over the years.

This was followed by ‘Human Spirit’ on the BGO label – featuring all new recordings produced by Bill Gautier with a stellar line-up of musicians such as Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody, Rob, Paul and Dave from The Blues Band, Steve Simpson, Mark Feltham and Dennis Greaves.

He also works with his own 4/5 piece band. The ‘Giant From the Blue’ GFB album features all new material and includes some remarkable contributions from young guitar wizard Steve Ling, jazz trumpet giant Guy Barker, the Kokomo singers and Dire Straits drummer Pick Withers.

His solo gigs feature his eclectic acoustic guitar playing – he plays a right handed guitar left handed, without restringing it so he’s effectively playing ‘upside down’! Various tunings are employed and slide features on some material. A resonator guitar and a 5 string banjo also feature in his work. All this undoubtedly contributes to the highly individual and very musical backdrop his playing provides to his clear singing voice, with which he delivers articulate, thought provoking and at times very personal lyrics. Whilst the majority of his performance features his own original songs he usually includes some choice covers from the likes of Willie Dixon, Blind Willie Johnson, Eric Bibb etc. His guitar and voice only album ‘In Solitary’ showcases Gary in pure solo guise.
