Bob Margolin's goal with this CD was to perform the type of blues-oriented music that he plays at home for his family. Through overdubbing, he is very much a self-sufficient one-man band. The variety of music that he performs spans several idioms, ranging from jump blues and "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You" to lowdown blues, Bob Dylan's "Tears of Rage," a few songs reminiscent of Muddy Waters (with whom he played regularly for seven years) and an occasional instrumental. Margolin's musicianship is impressive, his vocals are heartfelt, his originals are colorful and his spoken word story on "You Never Know" is realistic while containing a moral. That’s why unlike in other genres, all live Blues albums are good to great. It’s like pizza or sex, even when it’s not mind-blowing its still pretty good. This axiom only applies to Blues albums; that endless 35 minute jam band track popping up in your shuffle! Lucky for fans of Milwaukee natives Jonny T-Bird & the MPs, Hot Stuff is a good live record that shows off this strong swinging Blues band in front of a warm receptive crowd.

Recorded live at Red Dot in Wauwatosa, WI, Hot Stuff highlights Jonny T’s classy guitar chops. In the vein of 80’s renaissance slingers like Ronnie Earl or Duke Robillard, T-Bird plays swinging old-school Chicago style through a clean Stratocaster sound. Also adept at slide, using a freaky USA map guitar, Jonny T-Bird delivers the real deal uncut six string magic. It is right that this record be credited to the MPs because like all good traditional Blues, the band is essential. “Cadillac” Craig Carter on bass and Marcus “MG” Gibbons on drums infuse these Blues with funk, drum triggered digital beats and slapped booty shakin’ low end. This solid rhythm section helps to add variety and inventiveness into the swing, which lesser musicians often make boring and hackneyed. The secret weapon is Danny Moore on keys. An unassuming player, Moore colors the edges of the music with flourish and foundation.

When Jonny T-Bird and the MPs are in it, they scorch. “Me & My Baby,” sung by Cadillac Craig, highlights the bassist’s super funk. Slapping like Johnny B. Gayden over live drums and triggered digital beats, Craig delivers this feel good testimony to love and companionship with a throaty drawl. T-Bird stabs at the rhythm unencumbered by his lead vocal role and unleashes a torrent of note flurries. Guest key tickler Jimmy Voegeli sprinkles a clavinet sounding solo onto the mix creating the high point of this album.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds’ first two records are the high water mark for the type of swinger cool Blues that Jonny T-Bird and company are trying to lay down so it is no surprise that they cover the T-Bird’s cover of “Why Get Up?” (hmm, Jonny T-Bird – Fabulous T-Birds). With a great call and response vocal performance and reverential arrangement, “Get Up” is one of Jonny T’s strongest vocal outings. The hypnotic syncopated, faintly New Orleans-y, groove pops along and again shows how this band can get down when the material they are performing is right for them.

As good as Jonny T-Bird is when he is in full guitar flight, his vocal skills cannot carry all of the material on this record. A song like “Someday Baby,” a variant on the classic “Sittin’ On Top of the World” form, falls literally flat with T-Bird’s spoken word vocals. Exceptional slide work and the ever locked in band keep this song moving and probably made it fun to watch live but as a strictly auditory experience it is not in the same league as the above mentioned performances. Jonny writes 5 of the 11 tracks on this record and the writing is inconsistent. Swingers like “Stupid Cupid” and “It Is What It Is” are great musical performances but the lyrics are clunky and don’t flow. “Greens & Dough” and “Laura” are better written but the music is to directly referenced to Howlin’ Wolf songs, “Killing Floor” and “Spoonful” respectively, to feel fresh or original.

Jonny T-Bird and the MPs are a hard swinging band of highly skilled technicians. They lock in, they play reverentially and with innovative flair within a very classic style. They must be a blast to see live and Hot Stuff is a good document. HP Lange is one of Denmark's most popular mediators of acoustic blues music. As such, he has twice been awarded a Danish Music Award for best "roots" album, and in 2011 he was named the Danish Blues Name of the Year.

The primarily participating blues and north mississippi hill country blues-oriented singer, songwriter, guitarist and banjo player, who has got real slices behind him, has now been on the track for 30 years.

This is highlighted with the Trackin 'my blues CD, which is an excellent 30th anniversary release.

Unlike HP. Long's 20th anniversary double album from 2008, A compilation of roots blues - 20 years anniversary, Trackin 'my blues "is only" a single CD release.

On the other hand, it is extremely well-exposed.

HP Lange has always been surrounded by outstanding music colleagues such as Bless Hugo Rasmussen, Troels Jensen and the eminent oral actor Jarno Varsted.

This is reflected on Trackin 'my blues over fifteen sparkling numbers, spanning HP Langes music releases from the years 1995-2016.

Born in 1953 in the Delta town of Doddsville, Mississippi, Jackson moved to Chicago as a child in 1957. His music marries acoustic sound with original lyrics. Since he was able to make his love for the blues his vocation in the mid-'80s, Jackson has accomplished a lot as an educator, performer, and activist. He created an award-winning "All About the Blues" series for the Blues Foundation's Blues in the Schools program, and was awarded the 1996 Illinois Arts Council Folk/Ethnic Heritage Award. He is also the recipient of the Blues Foundation's 1997 Keeping the Blues Alive award for blues in education.
Jackson is forceful singer and an adventurous guitarist, but on his debut album he's too often let down by his songwriting, which is boobytraped with platitudes and doggerel. The novelty 'Mango Bango', set to Latin rhythms, is simply unspeakable, and the busy production, using various instrumental combinations, too often seems to be an attempt to disquise weak material.

Like Lou Reed on Perfect Night Live in London, Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of the venerable Southern-fried institution of Little Feat use crisply mixed acoustic instruments to reinvent their distinct blues-rock shuffles. The blend of Barrere's acoustic guitar and Tackett's mandolin is a fine, clean one. Barrere's slide work is quite enjoyable as well. While covering mostly Barrere's original material, the duo also dips into the catalog of Little Feat's founder, the late Lowell George, including a magnificently gentle reading of the classic "Willin'" and a ten-minute run-through of "Dixie Chicken" that could have used a little trimming. Barrere occasionally pushes his voice to a soulful crooning that doesn't quite make it. Mostly, the music is enjoyable, though not overly compelling. ~ Jesse Jarnow

Texas-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Shawn Pittman attended the Albert King, Jimmie Vaughan school of blues guitar playing. He's not flashy, and he realizes the spaces between the notes are as important as the notes themselves. Tone and melody are just as important, to Pittman's way of thinking, than fast and flashy runs up and down the guitar neck.
By the time he was 28, Pittman had recorded and released three albums that showcase mostly his own original material.
Pittman was born and raised in Oklahoma, where his earliest musical memories were listening to his father and grandfather's record collections, which included good people like Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry. His grandmother was a boogie-woogie piano player and his grandfather played country guitar. His earliest blues heroes were Jimmy Reed and Lightnin' Hopkins. Hearing both of them for the first time was a revelation for the young, impressionable Pittman. He arrived in Dallas in 1992. Shortly after this, he jumped right into Dallas' still-bustling blues club scene, sitting in with and befriending musicians like Anson Funderburgh, Hash Brown, Mike Morgan Morgan, Tutu Jones, Mark Pollock and Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones. Being schooled by some of the best players around Dallas and Fort Worth, Pittman became a multi-dimensional guitarist who even today enjoys playing rhythm as well as lead guitar.
Pittman counts among his influences people like Lightnin' Hopkins, Hound Dog Taylor, Mike Morgan and of course, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, who came out of the Dallas club scene before they moved to Austin, one at a time, in the late 1970's. Pittman recorded two discs for the now-defunct Cannonball Records label, "Burnin' Up" in 1997 and the Jim Gaines-produced "Something's Gotta Give" in 1998.
After spending the next two years battling some personal and professional demons, including the premature closing of Minneapolis-based Cannonball Records, Pittman moved to Austin, got his act together with the aid of two bassists, Tommy Shannon and Preston Hubbard, and released "Full Circle" in Austin.
All his fifth releases showcase a mature songwriter with something to say, deep, tone-conscious guitar playing and a fine voice. Pittman is backed by a short who's-who of Austin-area musicians, including Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble on bass and drums, as well as Riley Osborne on Hammond B-3 and keyboards, and the Moeller Bros.

A street musician from his arrival in New York in 1935, Washboard Doc was on the fringes of black musical life thereafter, claiming to have recorded alongside Ralph Willis and Sonny Terry. He certainly provided backing for Alec Seward, and also played, with varying degrees of appropriateness, on many Victoria Spivey albums. Full albums by his trio, featuring Lucky (b. Cab Lucky) and Flash (b. John Whitner), led to a European visit in 1980.

Notes: The Even Dozen Jug Band was founded in 1963 by the great country blues and ragtime guitarists Stephan Grossman and Peter Siegel in New York City. An old timey super-group of sorts, its members included John Sebastian (who later formed the Lovin' Spoonful), mandolinist extraordinaire David Grisman, guitarist Steve Katz (later with Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears), vocalist Maria D'Amato (who later became singing star Maria Muldaur), and famed American musicologist and pianist Joshua Rifkin. The band was short lived and in 1964 released their only album, the highly influential "Jug Band Songs Of The Southern Mountains". Shawn Pittman's debut opus for Cannonball shows a strong stylistic tip of the gaucho hat to the Vaughan brothers, SRV in particular. But there are actual sparks of originality in even the more pedestrian and derivative tracks on here. Pittman's vocals exhibit a maturity and assurance not usually heard on these types of records, and his songwriting -- taking in seven of the 11 tracks aboard -- are more than just paint-by-numbers compositions. Nice covers of Freddie King's "Night Stomp" and Hound Dog Taylor's "Gimme Back My Wig" make this a debut well worth investigating. -- Allmusic.
There are plenty of young and very talented blues guitarists out there and Shawn Pittman is one of the most talented of all. Hs first release, is a fine collection of great "12 bars" blues tunes. There is nothing new or unheard here, however all the songs are extremely well played with the right feeling and the right intensity. Shawn proves beyond any doubts his ability as guitar player delivering a constant high standard performance throughout the album. His techniques and tune control are top of the range and if you add the fact that he plays with great feeling you may figure out the final result. His guitar work is excellent in each song setting a new level of benchmarking for all the others, just check out the cover of Albert King's "You sure drive a hard bargain". -- Amazon.

Led by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Donnie "Mr. Downchild" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band is the premier blues band in Canada. Their saxophone-driven jump blues provided a major inspiration for Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi's Blues Brothers, who included Walsh's tunes, "Everything I Need (Almost)" and "Shotgun Blues," on their 1978 debut album, Briefcase Full of Blues. Formed in 1969 by Walsh and his brother, Richard "Hock" Walsh, the Downchild Blues Band endured continuous personnel turnover. More than 18 musicians came and went, including Gene Taylor, who went on to play with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Kenny Neal, who joined after leaving the employ of Buddy Guy and relocating to Toronto. Conflict between the Walsh brothers resulted in Hock Walsh being fired from the band shortly before work began on their third album in 1974. Although he returned to work with the band in 1977 and 1985, his hard living caught up with him on February 1999 when he succumbed to an apparent heart attack. Since the early '90s, Downchild Blues Band has benefited from a more-fixed lineup. Vocalist/songwriter Chuck Jackson, who joined in 1990, received a Maple Blues award as "best male vocalist of 1999" and a "Blues with a Feeling" award, from the Toronto Blues Society, for his "achievements during a distinguished career". A former member of '60s rock band, Rhinoceros, Michael Fonfara received a Maples Blues award, in 2000, as "piano/keyboards player of the year." Mike Fitzpatrick has played drums with Big Joe Turner, Sonny Rhodes, Hubert Sumlin, and Bob Margolin and has recorded with such blues artists as Snooky Pryor and B.B. Odom. Gary Kendall, who played bass on the band's earliest recordings, returned after a 12-year break, during which he booked concerts at Toronto blues club the Silver Dollar. New album “Beau Weevils – Songs in the Key of E” reinforces Charlie Daniels as a musical icon. The album is a product of a collaboration with longtime producer James Stroud and Daniels, but this time the producer joined the project as a musician. Daniels previously stated, “James is one of the finest and most soulful drummers in the business and I figured we could get together, musician to musician, and come up with something special. We just needed a vehicle in the form of songs that would fit the bill.”

That idea took off like wildfire, and the result was 10 tracks that Charlie Daniels wrote or co-wrote which creatively showcase the performer’s musical diversity as an artist. Kicking off the project with the gritty track, “Geechi Geechi Ya Ya Blues,” fans will be pleasantly surprised to hear another side of Daniels.

The singer also explained how the creative process began by saying, “The whole thing started one day when I, as I often do, was fooling around with my guitar and came up with the opening riff on a song that eventually turned out to be ‘Mudcat,’” stated Daniels. “That song set the style for the rest of the songs I would write, that all lent themselves to being played in the key of E, hence the title.”

The song “Mudcat” draws from a Blues-inspired style for the country singer. Other notable musicians on the album include Billy Crain on guitar and Charlie Hayward on bass. The project was produced by Stroud, Casey Wood, and Daniels’ manager, David Corlew who served as executive producer.

Youlden's unique blues vocals contributed hugely to Savoy Brown's most successful albums and international recognition but, he has rarely performed again after leaving them over 40 years ago. Luckily, these eighteen superb previously unreleased analogue studio recordings with friends have survived to illustrate his greatness. They clearly had enough of a grape-like bloom at the time to merit being picked and preserved for later enjoyment. Savour the vintage.

In 2011, the late, great guitarist Martin Stone contacted Chris Youlden and other members of his old blues band wanting to assemble a group for the 40th Glastonbury Festival. Having performed with Mighty Baby at the very first Glastonbury Fayre, Martin had been invited to provide the opening act of the anniversary. So, The Old Tossers gathered for the last time and duly took to the "Spirit of '71" stage on Thursday 23rd June 2011. During the course of the reunion, memories were revived about a couple of "lost" Chris Youlden recording sessions with the band (without Stone) from 1987 and 1991. The tapes had been preserved in excellent condition and upon listening were deemed eminently worthy of release.

From a Dirty Memory to a Beautiful Slop.

It was an unlikely phone call made in 2014 that brought Jason Ricci and JJ Appleton together. “You don’t have an acoustic album yet, let’s make one” said JJ. A few song writing sessions, a live to video and pro tools recording in NYC with Tedeschi Trucks bassist Tim Lefebvre, and the album Dirty Memory was birthed.
Cut to a multi-week long stay in the top 10 iTunes Blues charts and the Roots Music Report, headlining Festivals and venues from the tip of icy Maine, to steamy New Orleans - it was quite a run. It became obvious to Appleton, Ricci and their fans, that a new album was in order.
The duo took over bassist/producer Derek Nievergelt’s Brooklyn basement studio for two days. 90-degree heat and no AC. The swampy heat set the stage for what can only be described as 10 recordings dripping with raw grit, groove, acoustic soul and sweat: Their new album “Beautiful Slop”.
Ricci, a harmonica legend and winner of the 2018 Blues Award for Best instrumentalist/Harmonica, has broken another barrier melding perfectly his Sonny Terry on speed style with beautiful melodic, flowing riffs that consistently bring a smile or tear throughout the record. Appleton’s original songs and unique takes on some very unusual covers shows the duo’s penchant for keeping people guessing as to what they’ll do next.

The sky was crying when Gary Moore passed away on 6th February 2011. From Thin Lizzy to Colosseum II, together with his solo hits ‘Parisienne Walkways’ and ‘Out In The Fields’, Gary influenced a whole generation of guitar players and guitar playing.

The bass player/producer Bob Daisley had played with Gary since the 1980's, and is known for suggesting to Gary that he should make a blues album - the rest is history, ‘Still Got The Blues’ was an immense hit, followed by a series of classic modern blues albums. Bob, also known for his contributions to Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne, was the driving force behind “Moore Blues For Gary”.

“In my opinion, Gary was one of the best guitarists who ever lived”, says Bob Daisley. “It was an honour for me to have worked with him and to have known him so well. When Gary passed away in 2011 the world lost one of the all-time greats. I don’t think that enough was said or done at the time to acknowledge the loss of such a great player so I took it upon myself to pay personal tribute to the man and record some new versions of his music, mostly from his blues catalogue.

I asked many members of the Gary Moore family tree, and some other great players, to contribute to the project. The response was not only encouraging, but very moving. It seems that the name Gary Moore is also synonymous with the words ‘respect’, ‘honour’ and ‘greatness’. I didn’t set out to recreate anything that Gary had done, or to compete in any way, these arrangements and performances represent a ‘hats off’ to Gary and nothing more. Long live the memory of Robert William Gary Moore. Yes, he was an­other ‘Bob’ - something that I wasn’t aware of for all of those years that I worked with him. I feel such gratitude towards the people who contributed to this album and I’m honoured to have worked with them all.”

John Sykes (ex-Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake) makes a triumphant return after a long absence with an uber-emotional rendition of ‘Still Got The Blues’, with the soulful vocals by Daniel Bowes (Thunder) complementing each other.

‘Parisienne Walkways’ is played by Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs) and Ricky Warwick (Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, The Almighty), with the unlikely pair resulting in a miraculous chemistry.

Gary's friends are here - his rocking keyboard / guitar / vocal sidekick Neil Carter sings ‘Empty Rooms’, which he co-wrote with Gary. Don Airey (Deep Purple, Rainbow) and Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple) had joined forces with Gary on numerous occasions, together with Eric Singer (Kiss) and Darrin Mooney (Primal Scream). Brush Shiels, the leader of Gary's first professional band Skid Row, also makes an appearance.

Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), Steve Lukather (Toto), Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow), Jeff Watson (Night Ranger), Damon Johnson (Black Star Riders, Alice Cooper) and Stan Webb (Chicken Shack) also unsparingly pour all their emotions to show their appreciation to Gary.

Gary's sons Jack and Gus are also involved, playing guitar and singing on ‘This One's For You’, showing that the ‘Blood Of Emeralds’ still runs their veins.

During his blues days, Gary made two albums to thank the guitarists that made him who he was: “Blues For Greeny” for Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, and “Blues For Jimi” for Jimi Hendrix. Now this is his turn to be rewarded with an album full of love and respect. We still got the blues for you.

Richard Riggins (this Harmonica Slim) was born 1st July 1921 in Tupelo (Ms). He started to play harmonica at a very young age and knew quite well a teenage Mc Kinley Morganfield (yes: the future Muddy Waters) who was courting Richard's sister. In 1932, Richard went to work for the Pacific Railroad Company and settled in Oakland (California) . He plays the week ends on local juke joints with other deep blues artists like Al Simmons, Sidney Maiden or Guitar Slim Green. In 1966, Riggins teams up with K.C. Douglas which brings him for the first time in a studio, recording behind K.C. Douglas and under his name in 1973-74 two 45s for the Blues Connoiseur label. After retirement from the Railroad, Richard settles in Fresno (Cal.) where producer Chris Millar finds him in the early 90's and records him on the anthology West Fresno Blues Masters and on several CDs under the nickname Harmonica Slim.

Eric Bibb may have found the perfect formula, where his own groovy contemporary blues fuses with African roots as well as reggae and gospel. About 15 musicians of the highest calibre, Americans, Europeans, Jamaicans and two African stars, the Malian Habib Koité and the Senegalese Solo Cissokho took part in Global Griot, a most unusual treat and a milestone in Eric Bibbs outstanding career.

Pursuing a career spanning five decades, never resting on his laurels, always on the move, Eric Bibb has a full bag of stories to tell from around the world. So, here comes Global Griot, global indeed, recorded in France, Sweden, Jamaica, Ghana, Canada, the UK and the US ! If the expression World Music were not so problematic and much misused as a marketing tool it would suit Erics approach. But dont get it wrong: He is first and foremost a blues brother- an old school bluesman who finds ways to expand his domain. Along his journey hes been fortunate enough to meet incredibly talented musicians who he regards as kindred spirits. Some of them have been reunited for this album such as Swedens guitar ace Staffan Astner, reggae legend Ken Boothe from Jamaica, top-drawing Americans Big Daddy Wilson, Harrison Kennedy, Michael Jerome Browne, Linda Tillery of Cultural Heritage Choir fame and two remarkable West African musicians Malian guitarist/singer Habib Koité (who contributed so much to the success of Brothers In Bamako) and the Senegalese Solo Cissokho whose omnipresent kora playing is one of the beauties of this double-disc album. And lets not forget wife Ulrika Bibb contributing celestial harmonies.

This is Erics most collaborative work to date with all songs (besides four traditional tunes and two covers) sharing writing credits with various musicians involved in the album. The two covers were originally recorded in the 50s: Ed McCurdys Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream was an anthem of the peace movement. Children were filmed singing it at the destruction of the Berlin Wall and it was covered by (among others) Simon & Garfunkel and Johnny Cash. Big Bill Broonzys Black, Brown and White was his most committed song, alas still relevant nowadays. As Eric tells us in Hoist Up The Banner: I dont think of myself as a flag waver and here I am, wavin this one because he felt he had to, confronted with the ugly rhetoric spreading like prairie fires, here and there. Always the entertainer, the educator and the motivator, Eric Bibb, more than ever, continues to resonate with what is currently happening in the world today.

With both parents being passionate musicians themselves, Robben early found his love for music and especially for playing guitar – and it was a love that should last forever. Purple House, his forthcoming brand new studio album, co-produced by Casey Wasner, features nine powerhouse tracks and the album’s genesis, according to Ford, was simple and uncomplicated. “My concept for the record was to do something with a lot more emphasis on the production than I’ve had in the past”, says Robben. “I’m always pushing myself with each record. I haven’t made one record that sounded like the one before it and this was going to be no different. ‘Purple House’ was a great opportunity to try something really different.”

And he adds: “I used to deliberately write blues and rhythm and blues. The Blue Line, that band really focused on blues and rhythm and blues. Traditional. But over the years I’ve really tried to expand that and this new record, more than anything I’ve ever done, is a real departure from tradition in terms of the songwriting.”

On Purple House we hear special guests appearances such as blues powerhouse vocalist Shemekia Copeland; she sings a duet with Ford on “Break In The Chain.” Travis McCready, the lead singer of the Natchez, Mississippi band Bishop Gunn, contributes the lead vocals on “Somebody’s Fool.” And we hear a fantastic guitar solo of Bishop Gunn’s guitarist Drew Smithers on the album’s closing track “Willing To Wait”.
