Jr. Johnny was born in New York. As a young man he frequented the most bohemian area of the city and played in some garage bands. One day he heard Muddy Waters and from that moment on he decided that blues would be the music that would fill his life. After returning from the war in Vietnam, he moved to San Francisco where he met musicians like Mike Bloomfield, Jimmy Whiterspoon and had the honor of playing with John Lee Hooker who gave him the nickname Jr. Johnny. To feed his family he had to put music aside and dedicate himself to the most varied jobs.

Now Jr. Johnny has felt the need to play again and that is why he has recorded a relaxed and intimate album that includes ten of his own compositions that reflect a simple and informal atmosphere. The songs perhaps err on the side of being somewhat similar in terms of to the tempos, and also Jr. Johnny is not a vocalist with wide ranges but rather a singer in a melodic line like Leonard Cohen or Lou Reed who, instead of singing, what they usually do is recite.

Personnel: Jr. Johnny (vocals, harmonica); Peter Corrigan (rhythm and slide guitar); Denny Dwyer (lead guitar); Tony Perrino (keyboards); Stephen Minnich (bass); Joe Rocco (drums).

Tireless harmonica player, singer, song writer composer Jr. Johnny comes back with a new album under his arm. As it could not be otherwise. Jr. continues with his unique sound and phrasing with which we are accustomed to. Jr. has never refused to deny and carries with pride the incredible brand of the venerable Sonny Boys 1 and 2 with which he carries a huge responsibility. Especially because he is the front man, singer and harmonica player of the band.

On “The Unraveler” Jr. Johnny has once again included twelve of his own songs. Once more he shows himself as an interesting cool original composer who has many things to say. Jr. Johnny’s band consists of: The great New York City blues guitar player David Likhtiger (lead guitar); Steve Minnich (rhythm guitar); Bjarne Kjaer (drums); David Pastorius (Jaco’s nephew) (Fender bass); Ron Teixeira (Heidi’s Jazz Club keyboard player) (organ and piano). “You will enjoy this CD as it is a good option to get happy and have fun!” /Vincente Zumel, La Hora Del Blues

Jr. Johnny uses one of his custom made harp amps here – Awesome tone and all original! You got to hear this!!! With contributions from past blues luminaries such as Bob Greenlee and Ace Moreland, Johnny has created a harp-driven blues disc that defines the word “smokin”. The Kingsnake Allstars are no slouches either. Warren King (guitar) and Ronnie “Bird” Foster (drums) slide right into the groove and help to underwrite Johnny’s perfectly-suited vocals. Jr. Johnny is a talent that should be headlining blues clubs and festivals wherever he goes. He can blow the blues like the masters, yet clearly has a slant of his own. Jr. Johnny has dedicated this CD to Bob Greenlee and Ace Moreland.

Jr. Johnny does it again with what he calls his best release to date. Vocally, he captures the mood of each of these originals, while his harmonica soars and pierces the blues, then reaches back and cuddles it. For harp lovers all over the world, this should be considered essential listening. Students of the instrument would be well-advised to pay attention to these tracks too. Excellent guitar production also graces this package thanks to the efforts of Peter Corrigan and Russ Aldrich. The rhythm section (featuring Steve Minnich on bass and Mike Cairo on drums) is rock solid and Hymer Morgan is simply incredible at the piano and B-3. It's always good to find such enduring blues.

So how did Jr. Johnny, the New York City bred grandson of polka playing Bohemian gypsies, end up devoting his life to Chicago-style blues? Like his playing, Junior Johnny's answer is both delightfully tempestuous and effortlessly profound. "When I heard Muddy Waters, I just freaked out!" he exclaims. After honing his craft in several early '60s teenage garage bands (actually "apartment bands," the neighbor-annoying NYC equivalent), Johnny was drafted and served as a combat MP in Vietnam. When his tour of duty ended, he moved to San Francisco and was soon making a name for himself with now-legendary blues men like Mike Bloomfield and Jimmy Witherspoon. Subsequently, Junior got his dream gig performing alongside the man who would christen him "Jr. Johnny": the great John Lee Hooker. "Hooker said he wanted me to have a nickname and just gave me one on the spot," Junior explains. "It stuck."

When the twin responsibilities of family and higher education forced him to give up life on the road, Junior Johnny began a series of wildly divergent professions that later gave him grist for his highly descriptive songwriting. "I've been everything from a union carpenter to a winemaster, "he says, "but I just wanna be out there playing!" Junior is currently busy promoting his Extreme CD while readying material for his next release, due out January, 2015. As of this date, Junior has written 190 original songs.
