A bit of a forgotten gem, 1968’s Lucille opens with a ten-minute love letter to BB’s guitar. He famously rescued it from a fire, and then named every guitar he played, usually a Gibson ES-345, Lucille. ‘Lucille took me from the plantation/Oh and you might say brought me fame,’ he says, before claiming, ‘Lucille don’t wanna play nothin’ but the blues.’ Bowing to Lucille’s wishes, King and his six-string partner wring ever ounce of emotion out of Ivory Joe Hunter’s late-40s sob story No Money, No Luck and BB’s own Rainin’ All The Time and Stop Puttin’ The Hurt On Me. The stomping, horn-driven You Move Me So is one of the record’s non-tear-jerkers.

Lengthy double-CD package of live and unreleased material recorded by the prime edition of the band in 1965-1966, all with Mike Bloomfield on board. Four songs are from their show at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965 (the same day they backed Bob Dylan's electric set, possibly the most controversial performance in the history of rock music). Eight tunes, according to the credits, were cut at Southerland Hotel in Chicago in the spring of 1966, but these sound like demos, outtakes, or a radio broadcast; there's certainly no audience present.

The rest was recorded at appearances at the Fillmore West in September and October of 1966. The fidelity is pretty good throughout, though not quite up to official release standards. It's an opportunity to hear quite a few numbers that the Bloomfield lineup did not release on Elektra studio recordings, including "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Come on In," "I'm Going Home," "Dropping Out," "Baby, Please Don't Go," "My Babe," "Kansas City," and "So Fine." The performances are certainly best and tightest on those spring 1966 Southerland Hotel tracks, and least interesting when they go into rock-oriented covers like "Kansas City" and "So Fine."

Of greatest interest, though, are lengthy live versions of their two finest moments, the instrumentals "East West" and "Work Song." "East West" is quite good, though unfortunately the performance seems to cut off at the very end, while "Work Song" is much longer (13 minutes) than its studio counterpart. /Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Musician, promoter of American blues in Romania, guitarist, singer, producer and producer of radio shows. In 1986, he started his career as a blues soloist, founding together with Harry Tavitian (piano), Corneliu Stroe (drums) and Cătălin Rotaru (bass guitar) the first blues band in Romania - Transylvanian Blues Community. After 1990, he was invited on tours in Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Turkey, Hungary (where in 1992 he opened the concert supported by the guitarist Al Di Meola). In 1991, he founded his own blues band - the Weinberger Blues Machine. He released his first Romanian blues album - Good Morning, Mr. Blues (1996), followed in 1997 by Standard Weinberger. The 1997 album won Best Jazz Record of 1997. Also in 1997, Weinberger performed in University Square for the visit of US President Bill Clinton. As a result, he received a message of thanks personally signed by the American president. He was the only non-American artist invited to participate in the famous Bluestock Festival in Memphis, USA. In 2011 he was awarded the title of 'Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Knight. During Covid confinement, singer and harmonica player Ronnie Owens spent time listening to some of his band Li’l Ronnie & The Grand Dukes’ old live shows recordings. One of them belonged to a 2005 concert. It was very well recorded and had an excellent sound too. Now Ronnie has rescued it to the delight of blues lovers who look for the best music, because the album is really impressive. Eight fantastic songs have been selected from that concert, respecting the same order they were played live, plus three bonus tracks recorded on studio.

The band included Ronnie Owens on vocals and harmonica, Robert Frahm on guitar, John Fralin on piano and organ, Bryan Smith on bass and George Sheppard on drums, all of them great musicians and amazing blues masters, a language they perfectly know and totally control. Jörg Danielsen became intrigued with the Chicago style electric blues when he attended a blues concert with his father. He immediately decided to become a musician and studied blues and three years later in 2008 formed his first band that he called the Vienna Blues Association. Their debut album was released in 2016 with three more to follow leading to their fifth album "Foolin’ Around". The band is still going strong although the lineup has changed. The band consists of Danielsen on guitar and vocals, Christoph Karas on drums, and a new bass player, Martin Melzer. His focus remains on the style of electric blues from the 1960’s and 70’s.

In 2023, Danielsen was selected by the Austrian Blues Society to represent Austria in the 13th Annual European Blues Challenge held this year in Poland. Twenty-two countries were represented in the competition with the Spanish group, Noa and The Hell Drinkers, surfacing as this year’s winners. In addition to the competition and his band’s concerts, Danielsen is the host for frequent blues jams. The new album features ten original songs and seven covers.

After the guest-star-drenched No Reason to Cry failed to make much of an impact commercially, Eric Clapton returned to using his own band for Slowhand. The difference is substantial -- where No Reason to Cry struggled hard to find the right tone, Slowhand opens with the relaxed, bluesy shuffle of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" and sustains it throughout the course of the album. Alternating between straight blues ("Mean Old Frisco"), country ("Lay Down Sally"), mainstream rock ("Cocaine," "The Core"), and pop ("Wonderful Tonight"), Slowhand doesn't sound schizophrenic because of the band's grasp of the material. This is laid-back virtuosity -- although Clapton and his band are never flashy, their playing is masterful and assured. That assurance and the album's eclectic material make Slowhand rank with 461 Ocean Boulevard as Eric Clapton's best albums.

A sprint through Howlin’ Wolf’s How Many More Years and the soulful lament of T-Bone Walker’s Waiting For Your Call are among the best tracks here, but they’re pipped at the post as the album’s high point by King’s take on Blind Lemon Jefferson’s 1927 recording See That My Grave Is Kept Clean.

Blood Brothers Live in Canada was recorded at Blue Frog Studios, White Rock, British Columbia, Canada, on May 19 and 20, 2023. The new album was produced by Mike Zito and mastered by Kid Andersen.

“Our shows in White Rock were full of energy and fire,” Mike Zito says about the recording. “Blue Frog Studios set an exceptional vibe for the task at hand. Albert and the band were seriously on that night; I felt really good about it.” Adds Albert Castiglia: “The stars were aligned that night in White Rock: the perfect room, perfect acoustics, an amazing audience and incendiary playing by everyone in the band. We’ve had a lot of shows like that, but very few have been captured on tape. It had to be shared with the world. It was a night to remember!”

The track listing for Blood Brothers Live in Canada album includes 10 live versions of songs that were originally included on the duo’s Blood Brothers studio album released to great international critical acclaim on Gulf Coast Records. That disc was produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith and proceeded to top both the Billboard and iTunes blues charts after its release in March, 2023. Augmenting those tracks are searing live covers of Zito’s “Gone to Texas,” the title track of his 2013 CD released on Ruf Records; and a blistering take on the Neil Young Classic, “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which closes the new album out in grand style.

Friends and bandmates since the 1970s, Bill “the Coach” Mather (bass), Paul Lenart (guitar), Chuck Purro (drums), and Richard Rosenblatt (harmonica) formed the 11th Hour Band and started playing the Boston music circuit in the early ‘80s. They released Hot Time In The City Tonight in 1985, the first album on the fledgling Tone-Cool Records imprint, and went on to play together off and on for the next few decades. They all stayed busy with other pursuits, musical and otherwise, but their unique musical chemistry and friendship kept bringing the “11 Guys” back to their original quartet. 2020 saw the release of their international chart-climbing instrumental album, Small Blues and Grooves, followed by videos for singles such as “Black Cat Bone” and “Blues Beyond Midnight.”

Gratified by the reception of the last album, 11 Guys Quartet dug in with remote recordings and produced eight new singles, all accompanied by videos. Mouton taught himself to play guitar at the age of 13, while working as a field hand. He soon became well known and highly respected in his home town. Although heard only rarely away from the environs of Lafayette, Zydeco Joe, as he was always known, established a considerable reputation throughout the world of Cajun music. Singing mainly in French Creole, but also in English, and often improvising the lyrics to his songs, Zydeco Joe captured the essence of the vibrant music he performed. He played briefly with Rockin’ Dopsie, but in the late 80s he formed his own band, Laissez Le Bon Temps Roulez, which he led at local dances and music festivals, such as the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, the Folklife Festival in Eunice and Festivals Acadiens. Wherever he went they added new fans, thus spreading his word-of-mouth fame. Regular members of Zydeco Joe’s band were Classie Ballou (bass), Cornelius Guidry (guitar), Joseph Edwards (scrubboard), and Kevin Menard (drums). Other musicians with whom he played, and who can be heard on his self-produced debut, Jack Rabbit, are guitarist Debra Kennedy, bass player Junius Antoine, scrubboard player T-Don Landry, and drummer Johnny Batiste. Around the same time as he formed his band, Zydeco Joe began playing accordion on which he was partly self-taught although he received instruction from his wife’s uncle, Dudley Broussard. Among the songs in Zydeco Joe’s repertoire were ‘Jack Rabbit Zydeco’, ‘They Tried To Steal My Chicken’, ‘Caroline Riding In The Buggy’, ‘Black Cat’, ‘Mama Fred’s Back Yard’, ‘Poppa Jack’, ‘Creole Life’, ‘Why Can’t We Get Together’, ‘You Can’t Rooster Like You Used To’ and ‘Zydecoin’ Everywhere’. Late in his career, Zydeco Joe began to venture outside his home base of the Louisiana-Texas border country and soon found that fame and recognition had preceded him. W. C. Clark was born Wesley Curley Clark, was born in Austin, Texas on November 16th, 1939. He grew up singing with his family in the choir at St. Johns College Heights Baptist Church and in the early 1950s, he started playing the guitar. At his first gig at Austin’s historical landmark Victory Grill, he was introduced to T. D. Bell and shortly after he joined Bell’s band, T.D. Bell and the Cadillacs. In the early 1960s, Clark played with Blues Boy Hubbard and The Jets at a popular Austin nightclub, Charlie’s Playhouse. He met R&B hitmaker Joe Tex at Charlie’s, who later recruited W.C. to fill the vacant guitar slot in his group. While touring the Southern “chitlin’ circuit” with Joe Tex, W.C. learned from legends such as Tyrone Davis and James Brown. Clark soon formed Southern Feeling with singer Angela Strehli and guitarist/pianist Denny Freeman. Later taking a job as a mechanic when Southern Feeling disbanded. Shortly after, Stevie Ray Vaughn, a friend of Clark’s, recruited him to join his band Triple Threat Revue. Stevie was successful in his pursuit and W. C. eventually left his job to become the bass player in the Triple Threat Revue with Stevie, keyboardist Mike Kindred, drummer Freddie Pharoah, and singer Lou Ann Barton. During his time with Vaughn, W.C. earned his first platinum record for co-writing “Cold Shot,” along with Mike Kindred, which ended up being a big hit for Stevie. Clark eventually formed his group W.C. Clark Blues Revue in the early 1980s and self-released his first recording, Something for Everybody, in 1986. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, his band played regular gigs at legendary hot-spots such as Antone’s and helped to shape the Austin Music Scene while opening for B.B. King, James Brown, Bobby “Blue” Bland and Albert King. He later signed with Black Top Records and released Heart Of Gold in 1994. Texas Soul followed in 1996, in which Clark won a WC Handy Award for “Soul Blues Album of The Year.” Throughout his career, he has released 7 albums, with Were You There? being his most recent in 2011. Clark has made over 100 festival appearances in the U.S. and abroad. Last year Clark celebrated his 80th birthday and he is still inspiring generations to come and making a lasting impression on his fans one show at a time!

Howell is an accomplished fingerpicking guitarist and a musical scholar, and the disc is his treatment of country blues, including songs by and associated with Muddy Waters, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Bo Carter, Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, and Mance Lipscomb. Doubtless Howell himself would not claim that he and his talented band, including ace session bassist Joe Osborn, who co-produced the album, improved upon the performances of the originators of these songs.

Their interpretations are spirited and exact, but never biting, starting with a version of Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied" that somewhat belies the title. The emphasis is on getting the details right, and they do, even if the emotions underlying the music are more distilled than expressed. Still, their affection for the form, starting with the leader who sings in an agreeable wheeze, is obvious. If Howell hasn't recorded much, it's probably because he is better appreciated in a live setting than on an album that necessarily comes off as more tribute than competition to earlier performers of the material. /William Ruhlmann, AllMusic

Blues-rocker Walter Trout struts his stuff on Livin' Every Day, the follow-up to his self-titled 1998 major-label debut. Overall, it's another fine outing for rabid blues guitar fans, full of gritty, gutsy playing and well-executed band support. Although songwriting isn't the album's primary focus, there are a number of tough survivor's tales here that resonate pretty well. On the other side of the coin, his balladry tries to be sincere yet leans toward sentimentality, which can dissipate the fire of the harder-rocking tracks. Still, Livin' Every Day is an entirely worthy effort by one of contemporary blues-rock's most underrated instrumentalists.

Although playing and recording blues for over a quarter of a century, this is the first LP Mister Childish has made in this genre in for several years. As well as featuring great tunes, Heavens Journey also serves as a showcase for many new poems that have been recorded by this legendary painter, writer and musician. On this outing Billy is accompanied by his wife Julie on backing vocals and bass guitar. Julie is American by birth and her father’s family are free Blacks and Winyah Indians from North Carolina. On drums we have Billy’s friend Wolf, who has collaborated with Billy for the past 15 years, most notably with his ‘dustbin mod’ group The Buff Medways. Sitting in on Harp is ‘Bludy’ Jim, an old friend since the punk days. Heavens Journey’ is a great introduction to The Blues and poetry of Billy Childish and shows his versatility and unique position in writing and music: An anachronism who is forever influencing the world of contemporary art and music. As ever, these recordings are sophisticated, homemade and primitive, which Billy explains is ‘the only way to connect with the heart. Heaven’s Journey certainly achieves that in spades.

For 20 years, Norway's leading female blues musicians Rita Engedalen and Margit Bakken have paid tribute to some of the strong women in the history of blues. The anniversary is celebrated and marked with the launch of a new album, a concert and the exhibition Kvinner i Kamp during the Notodden Bluesfestival's 35th anniversary in August 2023. On their new album "My Precious Blues" Engedalen and Bakken honor some of the important the women in the history of music. The album is personal and describes an encounter with strong female musical sources of inspiration. Six of the 11 songs on "My Precious Blues" are completely new material written by Spellmansprize winner (2006) Rita Engedalen, who with her seven previous solo albums has always included her encounters with the female blues champions in her releases. One can hear recurring cries for hope and justice in her lyrics on the new album, such as on "Let the Freedom Come" and "Nobody Can Take My Soul". "My Precious Blues" is a musical journey with songs that range from the close acoustic, to emotionally charged expressions with suggestive rhythms. Here we also hear driving blues expressions and powerful gospel moods! The album has its own personal lyrics, as well as songs by some of the leading women of the blues. On the road for 20 years, Damer i Blues has always had its regular guitarist Morten Omlid, one of the country's best-known blues guitarists, with a deep understanding and commitment to the authentic blues. Rita and Margit have also traveled and got new inspiration from Amund and Henrik Maarud in Snaxville Studio. Three of the songs on the new album have been recorded here together with the brothers - which has resulted in a new and exciting musical encounter! History's female blues pioneers have served as a great inspiration for Ladies in the Blues, and their musical heart beats warm and strong for them. This sounds good when they do their personal tributes and interpretations of some of these greats' songs. Damer i Blues has undoubtedly gained a strong position in the blues community, and in addition to a number of concerts here at home in Norway, they have visited festivals in both Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and the USA. They have, among other things, played at the legendary Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival in Clarksdale (2015) where they received a very warm reception for their musical project.
