Kerry Kearney is a slide guitarist deserving additional recognition. Although not as well known as Sonny Landreth or Roy Rogers his fretwork at times has been compared to theirs. Long Island’s Kearney has been performing for over forty years as this is his seventeenth recording.

A review of his 2001 “Welcome to the Psycodelta” album stated “when carbon copy seems to have become the set standard of musical style, it is refreshing to enjoy a performance of original artistry…no stylistic replication…but a fresh innovative voice…Kearney’s songwriting includes honest lyrics and music performed with emotion, energy, and unquestionable command of his instrument”. Soon after the albums release The Long Island Blues Society voted Kearney “Bluesman of The Year”.

Another review, this time of his 2012 “Ghosts of The Psycodelta” boiled it down “Kearney’s signature guitar sound is inspirational and evokes raw emotion on several levels. The musical notes that come through Kearney’s fingers create an oral experience that equals the vibrant colors that become a visual masterpiece on canvas”.

Kerry Kearney Band - 2 albums: A Night In The Tropics / Connect With Your Roots

Kerry Kearney (pronounced "Car-Nee"), a slide guitar master, plays and works his instrument to limits that amaze even the most seasoned musician or cultured music fan. The sounds Kerry creates from his vintage, stock and custom made guitars are as unique as his song writing and original melodies. Kerry was voted "Best Guitarist of 1999" by the LI Voice and “Bluesman of the Year 2004” by the LI Blues Society. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Long Island Sound Award (L.I.S.A.) from the LI Music Hall of Fame and most recently, in 2013, he and his band mates were each inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame. He has toured nationally and internationally with the Allman Brothers Band and Dickey Betts, and has performed with such contemporaries as Sonny Landreth and Robert Randolf. Most recently, Kerry and his band shared the stage with the great BB King at the NYCB Westbury Theater and at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY.

Kerry Kearney’s style, music from the “Psychedelta”, is his own brand containing an upbeat mix of American Blues & Roots, created from writing and performing on the circuit for over 40 years. Along with his band, he has continued to experience an overwhelming and positive response over the airwaves and especially when performing live. His wailing upbeat style of blues, driven by tasty, inspired guitar riffs, electrifying slide and infectious rhythms, has allowed Kerry to amass a huge loyal following.

As guitarist Peter Calo recently explored music from the Wild West, Kerry Kearney and his band take on traditional favorites as well as original material that fits into those well-traveled grooves. Kearney strikes a solid balance between technician and enthusiast, as familiar melodies dance over a truly inspired set of performances on this impressive outing. "Thank You Jesus" re-emerges in a swirl of Cajun/gospel while "Blues for Alexis" embraces sparse thumpin' old-style hues to express the mission. The five players in the Kerry Kearney Band are joined by 15 guest musicians who bring a subtle diversity to the proceedings. It's a great laid-back party record starting with the driving "Memphis High," which explodes with tasty playing slightly reminiscent of Wet Willie's delightful combination of blues and commercial pop. That short and sweet adventure might be the opposite of "Songs from the Levee," a beautiful moment halfway through the disc, though the two songs could segue nicely if put back to back. And that's the beauty of this collection -- you can put the player on shuffle and it all works as a cohesive unit, different styles finding a synchronicity, each title spilling different soulful secrets. "These Blues" is a sweet and perfect moment here, the band creating another atmosphere for Kearney's serious but moving vocal, a gentle triumph on a disc full of clever surprises. ~ Joe Viglione

Kerry Kearney - Ghosts Of The Psychedelta

Released: 2012

Art: Front

01. Mississippi River Stomp (2:59)
02. Mean Old Frisco (3:15)
03. Stop Breaking Down (3:37)
04. Louise Louise Blues (2:15)

06. Last Fair Deal Gone Down (1:32)
07. Baby Set A Date (3:44)
08. Girl From The North Country (2:58)

Kerry Kearney comes from New York state and has been around for 15 years, making a number of CDs in his own name and performing both solo and in a band. He is primarily known as a slide player and included in his CV is a five year stint in former Jefferson Airplane vocalist Marty Balin’s band. His mix of slide-driven roots and rock bears the name ‘Psychedelta’ and this latest CD is the fourth to work the term into the title! Joining Kerry who handles all lead vocals and guitars are Frank Celenza (bass), Mario Staiano (drums), Ken Korb (harp, penny whistle), David Bennett Cohen (keys), Nydia Liberty Mata (percussion) and Elizabeth Seton (backing vocals). A different set of musicians play on the final track, a cover of Dylan’s “Girl From The North Country”.

The CD opens brightly with the only original tune “Mississippi River Stomp”, a real slide-driven rave-up which reminded me of Sonny Landreth. Arthur Crudup’s “Mean Old Frisco” is an acoustic number and is effectively handled. Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breaking Down” is a personal favourite of mine and this version is great, Kerry’s slide ringing out in a very catchy and upbeat treatment with an excellent piano solo. “Louise, Louise Blues” by Big Bill Broonzy is done acoustically with Kerry’s dobro supported by gentle bass and drums.

The Beatles would seem to fit uneasily with the rest of the album but Kerry’s choice of “One After 909” actually works well in this interpretation. The piano is again a key component in an uptempo version. A second RJ tune is attempted in a very short (1.34) “Last Fair Deal Gone Down” in a similar trio version as we heard on the Broonzy tune before the band covers Elmore James’ “Baby Set A Date” in an unusual version with less slide than one might have imagined, but with additional percussion, harp and keyboards. The final track is the Dylan cover which is delightful, all delicate dobro, banjo, penny whistle and vocal harmonies. There are many great versions of “Girl From The North Country” but this one stands comparison with the best of them.

My only real criticism is that it is far too short! At just 23 minutes it is more like the old EP than an LP. However, I enjoyed this CD a lot. ~Review John Mitchell
