Long associated with B.B. King, Calvin Owens has made a name for himself with several wonderful releases of brassy urban blues since the mid '90s. Owens's career in music dates back to the mid '40s, when he started his own seven-piece band in Houston. He also played with Puma Davis in the early '50s. Davis band later backed Gatemouth Brown for his quintessential Peacock recordings, and Davis himself penned 'Okie Dokie Stomp' and later appeared on Bobby Bland's 'Two Steps From The Blues' album. Owens played off and on with B.B. throughout the '50s and also served as Peacock's A&R man. He returned to play with King and also served as music director from 1978 until 1984, even directed the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra horn section during that time. Tired of the road, Owens moved overseas to Belgium, got married, regained his health, and started playing again.

Calvin Owens was honored to be named Most Outstanding Blues Musician in the category of Sax, Trumpet, or Horn Section.

Note: The blues guitarist Otis Grand's first CD for Sequel records was recorded in Lyon, France in 1990, but was only on general release in Feb 1992 when the UK's SEQUEL Records picked up on it. "He Knows The Blues" Featuring the support of contemporaries like Otis' old friend Joe Louis Walker, Jimmy 'T99' Nelson, and Pee Wee Ellis (of James Brown fame). Joe Walker swaps guitar solos with Otis Grand on "SRV (My mood Too)" dedicated to the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. 'T99' Nelson shouts some vintage blues on " Jumpin' for Jimmy" and "Swing Turn", recalling the great R&B shouters of the 40's and 50's - Big Joe Turner & Wynonie Harris. Saxman Pee Wee Ellis, a member of the classic James Brown band of the 60's contributes arrangements and the instrumental " Ham".
B.B.King's long time bandleader and trumpet player Calvin Owens tops things off by arranging all the superb horn parts on the CD. More importantly , Otis Grand's superb and tough blues guitar technique and playing is evident through out this set and covers a wide spectrum of blues styles.

Notes: Otis says: "I have never played anything else but blues. I have never attempted to play anything else. I have never listened to anything else but blues, and its derivatives, anything that comes from it. I love western swing, people like Bob Wills, so that's the stuff I listen to. During my days in San Francisco, the big thing in San Francisco was acid rock. People like, for instance, Jefferson Airplane. They were big and you were supposed to drop acid and take drugs and listen to music like that. But I wasn't into that. I was turned on by the guitar of B.B. King, and Albert King in the '60s. They were not popular, but I had this feeling for the blues and I never stopped listening to it. My roots are in the record player. I didn't grow up on a cotton farm or anything like that! I listened and watched my favorites. You had people like B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells coming across, they were touring, making great records for Delmark and King. I was turned on and I stayed turned on. I'm proud to say that in the last 35 years my love for the blues has never stopped, and in fact it's getting greater and greater. It might seem corny, but I think I'm on a mission to introduce the blues to a lot new people."
