"Matt Stansberry’s latest project offers a sound that is both familiar and fresh – which is no small feat. The ten-plus member band delivers this exoteric rhythm and blues-meets-modern pop vibe by way of layered horns, dual guitars, keys/organ, a ‘pocket’ rhythm section and sassy, backing vocals. It's a potent mixture. And the group’s sophomore release, Crash Landing, offers a little extra appeal for star-crossed lovers and all who’ve felt a touch of life’s blues." ~ Jim Johnson

It was with this batch of songs that the Nimmo Brothers found themselves catapulted to the forefront of the British and European blues scenes, winning best UK blues album and best UK blues band at the 2002 British Blues Connection Awards, as well as headlining festivals and leaving sold out signs in the windows of clubs throughout the UK and Europe.

Let Me Get By features ten new, original songs that together stand as a testament to the hard work, independent spirit, and full-on commitment of the entire Tedeschi Trucks Band. The album’s artwork—a Mongolian golden eagle pictured a moment after flying from its handler’s glove—and even the album title itself reflect the sense of total dedication that serves as the driving force behind this recording. From that wellspring of dedication come the most powerful TTB recordings yet. Some songs you may have heard on stage in 2015, and some others that were deliberately held back for this occasion. Susan’s vocals and Derek’s guitar soar, tumble and glide through each song, as powerful as ever, even in the album’s most understated moments.

Let Me Get By is an album of firsts – in addition to being the first TTB record Derek produced on his own (with the contribution of Doyle Bramhall II performing/co-producing on three tracks), and the first on which he and Susan co-wrote all the songs within the TTB family, it’s Derek’s first album since his 15-year run as a member of the Allman Brothers concluded when the group disbanded last year, providing time for Derek and engineer Bobby Tis to spend countless hours in the studio honing the sounds and arrangements for this album. It’s also the first lead vocals on a TTB album for Mike Mattison, whose songwriting and harmonies have always been one of the defining features of the band’s albums. Finally, it’s the first album with Tim Lefebvre on board, whose deeply propulsive bass lines drive the rhythm section in exciting new directions on record.

Each and every member of the band contributed in the recording process: there’s Kofi’s melodic keyboard wizardry, the perpetually locked-in drums and percussion of J.J. and Tyler, the always-punctual horn lines from Kebbi, Maurice and Saunders, and the rich blend of the harmony vocals from Mike, Mark and Alecia. Each individual personality has a chance to shine on Let Me Get By—even the crickets behind the studio lent their voices to the album, firmly connecting the band’s music to the Jacksonville swamps from which it emerged.

Tracy Nelson has always brought a wealth of blues feeling to her work, but being bluesy doesn't necessarily mean that one is actually singing the blues -- one can certainly bring the feeling of the blues to rock, R&B, reggae, country, bluegrass, zydeco, or jazz (all of which have been affected by the blues). In fact, Nelson has often showed listeners just how blues-minded rock, soul, or country can be. In the Here and Now, however, isn't just bluesy -- it is blues-oriented, and this time, there are plenty of tracks that actually have 12 bars. Nelson, who was 45 when this album came out in 1993, really soars on passionate performances of "Motherless Child Blues" and "Go Down Sunshine" as well as Chicago blues gems like Elmore James' "It Hurts Me Too" and Willie Dixon's "Whatever I Am, You Made Me." And Nelson never sounded more confident than she does on "Please Send Me Someone to Love," which finds her performing a duet with veteran New Orleans soul great Irma Thomas. This Percy Mayfield classic, which was first recorded in 1950, is one of those standards that has been beaten to death over the years -- as great as the song is, there is such a thing as overkill. But Nelson and Thomas manage to make the tune sound fresh and vital, which is impressive because their 1993 version was recorded 43 years after the original version. Nelson, in fact, was only two years old when Mayfield first recorded "Please Send Me Someone to Love." In the Here and Now is hardly the only Nelson CD that is worth owning, but it is safe to say that it is among the strongest albums that she provided in the '90s. ~Alex Henderson

On Feb 12, 2007, the original Little Mike and the Tornadoes reunited onstage for the first time since 1990 for a special event: the fourth annual St. Augustine Bluz Fest. The same band that toured across the North American continent with Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers, whose members are all currently band leaders on their own, reunited as blues veterans for an unforgettable performance. Fortunately, the night was captured digitally by St Augustine's premier producer and engineer, Jim Stafford of Eclipse Recording Studio. The result was nothing short of excellent, which is what you would expect from veteran touring musicians of this caliber, even after seventeen years.
From the beginning of the night, Tony O. had the crowd in the palm of his hand with his searing guitar licks and deep heartfelt blues. The rhythm section of Brad Vickers and Robert Piazza kept the grooves tight and danceable, providing Little Mike with the perfect vehicle for his rough back-alley blues and muscular harp. The crowd was happy and excited and the night only got better when the boys were joined by special guest blues princess Zora Young. As the night grew hotter you can hear Zora urging Little Mike and Tony on as they soloed. By the time she left the stage everybody in the house was exhausted.
If you were not able to be there that night you may have missed one of the hottest blues performances St. Augustine has ever witnessed. If you were...you know what I'm talking about! Either way you will be glad you bought this recording of high-energy blues that captures one of the finest blues bands in the country at its best.

This is the second CD by Chris Bevington and Friends and was awaited with anticipation – could it be as good as the first? Well I’m pleased to say they have done it yet again with ‘Better Start Cookin’ , with a mix of blues, rock and Americana, the amazing collective band have nailed it!!! Many of the tracks on the album are written by members of the band, with a great variety of styles which keeps the interest.

Chris had a vision to record music with high calibre musician friends and in the last few years he has done just that. On this album his guests include Robert Hart on vocals from Bad Company fame, George Glover from Climax Blues Band on keys, rising star, vocalist Rebecca Downes, Jim Kirkpatrick on guitar and vocals, Steve Overland on vocals, Clare Fluff Smith on strings, Chris Aldridge on sax and clarinet and Pete ‘Sarge’ Frampton on guitars. Also playing alongside Chris Bevington on bass, were multi instrumentalist, singer songwriter and producer Scott Ralph, Andy Carr on drums, Adrian Gibson, Mike Yorke and Jamie Bannister on brass, Dave Edwards and Aidan Goldstraw on keys with Sarah Miller and Kate Robinson on backing vocals.

The first track ’61 & 49', on this very enjoyable album hits the spot and is probably my favourite. Written by Jim Kirkpatrick and Scott Ralph it has heavy raw rock overtones and strong vocals from Robert Hart, supported by Rebecca Downes, a real ‘get down and dirty’, full on track. Excellent slide guitar input from Pete Frampton and powerhouse drumming from Andy Carr with a superb bass line from Chris Bevington. ~Rosy Greer

A pleasing Bernard Allison shuffle ‘Boogie Man’ to follow, with excellent vocals and guitar from Scott Ralph, jazzy piano input from George Glover and plenty of brass with stupendous sax from Jamie Bannister. Slowing the pace with ‘Change The World’ written by George Glover, Scott Ralph and Chris Bevington – not on the ‘blues’ ladder, but an excellent track with Robert on vocals, Chris Aldridge on sexy sax and Adrian Gibson on trumpet with the addition of Alan White on harp.

A slinky jazzy number ‘Express Train’ displays the writing talents of Scott Ralph on vocals and lead guitar and Dave Edwards on keys with a good input of brass. The name sake of the album ‘Better Start Cookin’, another blues shuffle, has writer Scott on vocals and guitar, giving us a spectacular solo, with brass in plenty.

A brilliant part acoustic rendition of the Allman Brothers ‘Old Friend’, with class player Jim Kirkpartrick on vocals and guitars, superb. Next the classic BB King, ‘Every Day I Have The Blues’ with a great Gospel feel on the intro. Steve Overland takes the vocal lead with Scott Ralph on guitar.

Follow on with a cracking song with an Americana feel, written by George Glover and Scott Ralph, ‘Call My Name’, flies super joint lead vocals from star in the making Rebecca Downes and Scott Ralphs with Pete Frampton on slide. Then onto a well put together take of a Hendrix number ‘Bold As Love’ , with great guitar and vocals from Scott and a fan fare of superb sax from Jamie.

The penultimate track, , ‘Still Haven’t Seen You Cry’, hints of Americana and features Scott on vocals, with Pete Frampton playing superb slide guitar on this Scott/Thomas/Ralph(EMI) track. The final number on this excellent album, and slowing the pace, ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ , is written by Robert Hart who performs lead vocals in this soul drenched track. An powerful end to an exceptional album.

All the musicians have given their all and none more so than Chris Bevington himself, who as the bass player stands back from the lime light. Without him however, this project would never have got off the ground, so it’s hats off for his hard work and dedication and well done to all those involved to hopefully make this excellent CD, Better Start Cookin’, one of the best albums for 2016. ~Rosy Greer

11. Everybody’s Crying For Something (3:17)

I just received the newest release, Getaway, from Wendy DeWitt with Kirk Harwood and it swings. Opening with Sonoma County, Wendy DeWitt really gets the piano rolling and Kirk Harwood creates a New Orleans rhythm. Super horn backing from Mike Rinta (trombone), Tom Poole (trumpet) and Keith Crossan (tenor sax) really punches up the track. With an easy night club swing, the horn section opens up the floor for DeWitt on vocal and smooth piano. Crossan rips a nice sax solo capping the track. On bluesy ballad, Sometimes I Wonder, DeWitt really digs in on piano giving it a cool feel. Built To Last has super piano work over a cool blues line. Steve Freund adds some really tasty guitar work on this track giving it an additional dimension. Chuck Willis' Feel So Bad gets an easy swing with Freund laying in some tasty blues riff, paired with DeWitt's piano work and Steve Evans on bass for a nice overall sound. Big Joe Turner's 29 Ways has a light poppy funk and Freund plays off the rhythm with additive guitar riffs, also slipping in some shimmery guitar lines. Very cool. On Folks Like You, Harwood and DeWitt share lead vocals in a Jimmy Rogers style blues. Freund steps up again with some tasty riffs over DeWitt's excellent piano work giving the track that extra something. I Want To Believe You, is my choice of the release with a strong bass line from Evans and DeWitt's best vocals. Freund steps up again with some really tasty guitar lines nicely complimenting DeWitt's piano work for a well balanced track. Rocker, Never Be Too Much, has a solid James Brown back beat with DeWitt's piano style on the melodic soloing. Very cool. Trouble is a cool boogie with DeWitt pushing the train. Her piano work on this track is hot and the horns really punch it at just the right time. Very nice! Wrapping the release is Everybody's Crying for Something, an easy paced blues rocker. ~bman

The barely known or recorded Pee Wee Foster, Cool Papa Jarvis and Big Charley & The Domans supply top-notch blues busters from the early 60s unheard since the studio date. Chet "Poison" Ivey takes that Crescent City approach to "Now We Must Part". From the same Arock/Sylvia New York stable come the nerve-tingling "Cruel World" and an alternate version of the Buddy Lucas-penned "Steamboat". More master tape magic can be heard on Mary Johnson’s R&B dance classic "These Tears" which comes with added brass section and sax solo. All this and a whole lot more make this a must have compilation for any R&B lover.

While most people associate the blues with the steamy bayous of Louisiana and the cotton fields of Mississippi, lovers of the devil's music may be surprised to hear that there is also a thriving scene in Scandinavia. At the heart of this Nordic blues explosion are the Wentus Blues Band, who hail from Kokkola in central Finland.

And while the pinestudded wilderness of their homeland is about as far as you can get from the jukejoints of the Deep South, there's no doubting their musical credentials. Established in 1986, the band have acquired a reputation as the hardest working in Scandinavia and play around 150 gigs a year.

The Wentus Blues Band has toured in 17 different countries, released 10 albums, done several TV-shows, headlined festivals and toured with many great bluesmen. Expect explosive blues and frantic rhythm and blues, played with laid back stylishness.

British musician, bandleader, and blues historian John Mayall was tapped by the excellent jazz and blues archival label Document to dig through his record collection and present the best of the boogie-woogie pioneers. Not only did Mayall select the 22 songs for the disc, but he also wrote the liner notes in which he recalls his life-altering discovery of this music by hunting down used 78s back in the early '50s. The lineup Mayall chose speaks for itself. Not only does he pay tribute to the professors of boogie-woogie, but also a cross reference of blues pianists recorded between 1928 and 1960, none of which are represented by more than one track, serving the listener with a full scope of variations in style. ~Al Campbell

What's wrong with this picture? The sawed-off bespectacled singer/guitarist from Brownsville Station fronting the late Hound Dog Taylor's ex-rhythm section, the Houserockers -- blasphemy, you say? Get a life. Koda smokes like he's: 1) out to dispel any doubts about his legitimacy, and 2) having the time of his life. Opening with Howlin' Wolf's "Highway 49" (a rather tall order), the Cubmaster grabs the Chicago crowd by its collective neck and shakes it into submission. His guitar trade-offs with Brewer Phillips (no bass in this band) are a delight, and by "You Can't Sit Down" drummer Ted Harvey is blowing his police whistle -- signalling that things be rockin'! Eddie Clearwater sits in on one tune, and Koda tips his hat to the guitarist with a stellar rendition of Eddie's "Hillbilly Blues." This is worthy of wider release, not to mention an encore. ~Dan Forte

This funky, finely tuned compilation of CUB KODA's solo years is a salacious grab-bag of fun-lovin', roots rockin' originals covering seemingly every conceivable musical style short of rap, disco and opera. These heat-sinkers are intermingled with cool-arse covers of CUB's pioneering idols BO DIDDLEY, JUNIOR PARKER and LINK WRAY, plus the meatiest version of MOON MARTIN's CADILLAC WALK ever committed to wax. For you completists, there's a smattering of rare pre-BROWNSVILLE STATION solo stabs including a surf ditty, a ROY ORBISON obscurity, and a starkly executed ROBERT JOHNSON warhorse...even then, CUB KODA was both dues payin' AND amazingly versatile. Whether he was wailin' away on slide guitar, blowin' the bejusus outta his harp, or gruntin' a HOWLIN' WOLF-inspired line, KODA expertly carried on the well-tread tradition of "guts, grit, and an axe to grind" followed by fellow Detroit Rock City denizons MITCH RYDER, MC5 and ALICE COOPER. Choo Choo Charlie Williams has followed up the wonderful album he did with Red Jones with a new cd with his band the Spitfires, Harpin' My Life Away. This set focuses more on Charlie's amplified harp work and his vocals. Charlie sings in an attractive, unforced manner. Most of the songs are originals and he has a way of matching his lyrics with his melodies. While much of this is blues based, he mixes in some cajun and zydeco sounds with guest appearance from Louisiana’s own Geno Delafose on Jambalaya and Why Don't You (Let me Love You Honey). He adds touches to prevent the boogies and shuffles from sounding trite. The use of the horns gives a nice coloring to the opening shuffle, Take it Easy, while his harp and Dave Fairall's tenor sax create an interesting musical blend on the swamp-pop styled Since the Day You Went Away. Choo Choo's Boogie is a nice harp romp, while the closing Slippin' Away (Song for Klara) is a nice jazzy tune with fine chromatic playing. Harpin' My Life Away is a record that is varied, entertaining and full of heartfelt music. ~Ron Weinstock, Washington DC Blues Calendar

His CD Harpin’ My Life Away features 9 original songs and includes outstanding support on piano from Daryl Davis, alumnus of Chuck Berry's band, Tom Lepson, Danny Gatton, Jimmy Thackery and Nils Lofgren alumnus on Hammond B-3 Organ, and Louisiana's own Geno Delafose on accordion. "That's Fantastic, What a great recording. Everybody is on this thing, I swear. Sounds great." ~Damian Einstein

Crystal (Lead vocals); Johnny Trash (Drums/ vocals); Patrick Ouchêne (Guitar/ vocals); Dan Black Wolf (Double bass/ vocals).

Born in Brussels, Crystal grew up in a home filled with Country music, Soul, Doo Wop, Rock'n'Roll and of course Rockabilly. At the age of 16 she first set foot on stage, singing with Belgian Rockabilly band Runnin' Wild. This band, consisting of Patrick Ouchêne (vox/guitars), Johnny Trash (drums/vox) and Lenn Dauphin (double bass) are already touring the world for over 20 years with their particular Roots/Rockabilly sound. In that time they recorded 7 albums. But now they decide to use their experience to support the very promising new talent, which is Crystal. And so 2012 sees the birth of Crystal & Runnin' Wild, a band that starts to tour Europe immediately (Belgium of course, but also Germany, Holland, Spain, France and even Russia). One of the highlights was their performance in front of an audience of more than 5000 people at the Brussels Summer Festival, where they meet Steve McKay of Iggy & The Stooges fame. McKay is impressed by Crystal's version of their Punk classic "Search And Destroy", and joins the band in the studio to record an alternative version of the song, they had previously recorded on their first demo. Even only 21, Crystal has a very mature and powerful voice, which is clearly demonstrated on the first EP, which was released in April 2013.

Whilst his 2009 album 'Pistol City Holiness' was described as a "blues rock masterpiece" by the critics, Dave Perkins is the first to admit that he has found neither fame nor fortune in his four decades of music making. What the Tennessee-based singer/guitarist has achieved though is a loyal clique of admirers who still fondly remember his contributions to the '80s rock band Chagall Guevara while his fine guitar work has in the pas been compared with such giants as Ry Cooder and Phil Keaggy. Yet throughout the ups and downs of life the veteran muso has remained spiritually focussed, once commenting, "As artists we must reach high musically but we must learn to put Jesus even higher than that."

'Pistol City Holiness' saw Perkins offer blues-based riffs crafted around stomping rock melodies. The result as Perkins probably expected was a critical success which failed to turn into large sales. Talking about the album Perkins said, "I wanted to make an album that brought back the excitement I felt when I first heard Muddy Waters, Cream, Fred McDowell and Peter Green." Certainly the blues' soulful nature is captured by Perkins who sings with a rawness complemented by his revving guitar chugging along throughout the album. Critics called the album "high velocity southern blues rock, a seismic mixed breed of tradition and post-mod." Stereotypical Americana blues this album certainly was not. Besides all of the compliments for the album, reviewers hoped Perkins would not leave such a long gap before releasing his next album.

Cold Blood - S/T

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s

[5:23] 7. Watch Your Step

Cold Blood was one of the Bay Area's non-psychedelic contributions to pop music in the late '60s and early '70s. Their R&B-influenced combination of rock, blues, and jazz stood out from the guitar-driven acid rock bands most identified with that scene. After establishing themselves at dancehalls such as the Avalon or Bill Graham's Winterland Ballroom, Cold Blood became one of the first acts signed to Graham's Fillmore record label -- which was named after another one of his venerable venues. Their 1969 self-titled debut -- although somewhat contained in comparison to their live shows -- is a good representation of their soulful, horn-driven funk. One of the major reasons for the band's success is the unadulterated and otherwise raw vocal style of Lydia Pense. The album features a mixture of dramatic ballads -- such as the medley of "I'm a Good Woman" and "Let Me Down Easy" -- as well as full-blown R&B rave-ups on the cover of Sam & Dave's "You Got Me Hummin'" or their freewheeling version of "I Just Want to Make Love To You." Keyboardist Raul Matute's contribution, "If You Will," is a perfect vehicle for Pense's vocals as it glides between licks from lead guitarist Larry Fields and the five-piece brass section. Inevitable comparisons have been made between Pense, Janis Joplin, and Lynn Hughes -- of another San Fran rock and soul combo, Stoneground. However, there is a smoky scintillation to Pense's approach -- particularly potent on the gospel-tinged opener, "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" -- that is downplayed or altogether lacking from her contemporaries. This intangible quality would become increasingly pronounced and evident on Cold Blood's follow-up LP, the classic Sisyphus(1971). In 2001 Collectables reissued this album along with Sisyphus as part of two LPs on one CD collection. Although marred by sloppy mastering, it is recommended as the only place to hear this album in its entirety. ~Lindsay Planer

Tommy McCoy - 25 Year Retrospect (2-Disc Set)

A soulful singer, scorching lead guitarist, and prolific writer, Tommy McCoy’s uncommon versatility is on full display throughout this jam-packed compilation. By any standard, he has paid his blues dues and then some, as this collection eloquently testifies. The Florida-based guitarist has been performing and recording on a regular basis for well over two decades, and every one of his albums since 1992 is amply represented on this generous career retrospective. Tommy is backed by a variety of well-known musicians, including Commander Cody, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson, Lucky Peterson, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon, Tony Coleman and alumni of the Greg Allman Band. As a bonus, three new original tracks recorded in 2015 make their debut on this recording: the solo acoustic “Sugar Cane,” recorded at Gary Vincent’s studio in Clarksdale, Mississippi, “The King Is Gone,” Tommy's clever tribute to B.B. King; and “I Got A Reason,” a soul funky foray into R&B.

Bobby Mack - 2 albums: Live At J&J Blues Bar / Say What!

Guitarist Bobby Mack has been kickin’ around the Texas backroads and roadhouses for better than four decades, and if he hasn’t broken free of the glut of Lone Star stringbenders trying to be the next Stevie Ray Vaughan, it’s not for lack of trying. Born in Fort Worth, Mack was a teenager when he moved to Austin, where he quickly earned a reputation as a talented performer, backing up giants like Albert Collins and Luther Allison at legendary venues like the Armadillo World Headquarters and Antone’s.

Unlike the numerous SRV clones, Mack was a contemporary of Stevie and his brother Jimmie, the guitarist drawing deep from many of the same musical influences and sharing stages with a lot of the same players. While history has shown how their careers diverged, Mack is still walking that lonely road and cranking out some mighty fine music. ~Rev. Keith A. Gordon

Isaiah "Doc" Ross was a throwback to a bygone era; a true one-man band, he played harmonica, acoustic guitar, bass drum, and hi-hat simultaneously, creating a mighty racket harking back to the itinerant country-blues players wandering the Delta region during the earlier years of the 20th century. Born Charles Isaiah Ross on October 21, 1925 in Tunica, Mississippi, he took early inspiration from the music of Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, and Sonny Boy Williamson I; primarily a harpist - hence his nickname "The Harmonica Boss" - he only added the other instruments in his arsenal in order to play a USO show while a member of the Army during World War II. (The "Doc" moniker was acquired because he carried his harmonicas in a doctor's bag.)

Upon his release from the military, Ross settled in Memphis, where he became a popular club fixture as well as the host of his own radio show on station WDIA; during his club residency he was witness to a number of brutal murders, however, and swore off appearances in such venues during the later years of his life. During the early '50s, Ross recorded his first sides - among them "Chicago Breakdown" - for labels including Sun and Chess; in 1954 he settled in Flint, Michigan, where he went to work as a janitor for General Motors, a position he held until retiring.

In 1965 he cut his first full-length LP, Call the Doctor, and that same year mounted his first European tour; as the years passed Ross performed live with decreasing frequency, however, and was infamous for backing out of shows to catch his beloved Detroit Tigers on television. Upon winning a Grammy for his 1981 album Rare Blues, he experienced a career resurgence, and played festival dates to great acclaim prior to his death on May 28, 1993. /Bio by Jason Ankeny, AllMusic

Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee were never in the upper echelon of blues greats, but this is only one of their albums to suggest they weren't far off. Terry blows a breathy harp and keeps things moving with his trademark whoops. Underrated guitarist McGhee holds up his end instrumentally and vocally. The veteran duo is joined on two tracks by Lightnin' Hopkins. When they sing "Down By the Riverside," you feel like you're there. "Blowin' the Fuses" is a good finish to an album compiled from rare recordings that might not have surfaced were it not for this stalwart label. /Mark Allan, AllMusic

In the ever-vibrant history of American Music, there are seismic shifts in those proceedings that really do turn the world around. And one of those joyous occasions was when two young men in Chicago collided in their love for electric urban blues. Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield were born to spark off each other, and when they did in the mid-’60s, both blues and rock & roll have never been the same. Butterfield, a singer and harp player of absolutely devastating power, showed the world what was possible for that music. On his side guitarist Bloomfield lit much of the fire to their early collaborations, and became a guitar hero who will never be equaled. Each went on to write and record songs of such force and feeling that even today those accomplishments are still a shining beacon.

Today, in his own way, singer/harp player Rob Paparozzi along with The Ed Palermo Big Band take up right where Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield left off in their much too early exits from the planet. With a voice straight from the celestial gutter and a harp style that takes no prisoners, Paparozzi looks the soul of Butterfield and Bloomfield in the eye and doesn’t flinch an inch. “Electric Butter” is the kind of album that hits the monkey nerve from note one and keeps climbing higher and higher from there. While Rob and Ed may have gone to school on the work of the two earlier pioneers, they walk in their light and not in their shadow. Their burning band take some of the most moving songs from the Butterfield and Bloomfield treasure chest and explode them in a way not soon forgotten.

Paul Rodgers - Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute To Muddy Waters (2 CD)

Paul Rodgers' tribute to Muddy Waters is not a return to Waters' electric Chicago blues, but a continuation of the blues-rock of Rodgers' old bands, Free and Bad Company. Taken on those terms, Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters works only when Rodgers is matched with a good blues-rock guitarist. Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, and Gary Moore all play well, while Richie Sambora, Neal Schon, and Trevor Rabin all sound a bit lost; the rest, including David Gilmour and Brian May, fall somewhere in between. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

The Boogie Kings were away from music for 22 years before making a triumphant return in 1991. Since then, they've burned up the South Louisiana circuit with a sturdy blend of modern R&B and blues-tinged material, plus surging traditional numbers. This program shows that they're better at zydeco than R&B and soul covers, at least in the studio; their versions of James Brown's "I Feel Good," Johnny Ace's "Pledging My Love" and Sam And Dave's "Hold On, I'm Comin'" don't lack earnestness or effort, but aren't exactly distinguished. Main vocalist Duane Yates seems more at ease and isn't plagued by comparisons to superior singers. The group is instrumentally quite effective; they stumble at times, but The Boogie Kings mostly acquit themselves well. ~by Ron Wynn

It has often been a standing rule of thumb that when you re record a tune that was such a big hit that it becomes a "sacred cow" and should not be redone because the cover will never live up to the original hit. The Boogie Kings broke all of the rules and re recorded all of these hit songs with the original artists and the result was a best selling South Louisiana project. Check it out and you will see for yourself. This CD has quickly become a collector's classic.

The Artist known as eye-mini Sy Klopps started out as a fictional "recluse prodigy" musician. A fabrication, a trick, played on booking agents by Herbie Herbert, the successful rock and roll "Personal Manager" responsible for crafting Journey’s success. During phone conversations with fellow music business people, when poking fun and gaming was always expected, Sy Klopps was invented.

Eventually, Herbie decided to become Sy Klopps himself. He brought Klopps to life. Became the man. But, it could not have happened without his many famous musician friends who came to jam, gig and record, showing interest and offering their talents and friendship. Sy thrived on this and gave back just as much and even more.

Herbie retired from managment at the tail end of 1993 and jumped headlong into becoming Sy Klopps the artist. It became his passion. He built his own state of the art commercially competitive recording studio and recorded his first album, "Walter Ego", released in 1993 on Guitar Recordings Classic Cuts label. Gigs around the Bay Area and eventually at the Fillmore in San Francisco soon followed and Sy Klopps Studio became well known to musicians in San Francisco and even globally.

After his first CD, Sy recorded several more: "Old Blue Eye Is Back", "Berkeley Soul", an EP called "High Five" and a Live Video recorded in concert at the Fillmore. Sy has played live gigs with Etta James at the House Of Blues, with Tower of Power and The Doobie Brothers.
Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle dubbed Sy Klopps "The Paul Bunyan of the blues".
In 2001, Sy teamed up with Billy Kreutzmann, Neal Schon and some of his other band mates to create a new group called the Trichromes. They realeased a CD called "Dice With The Universe.”
