Quite by chance, while strolling through my music archive, I found a privately produced CD by Gine Heiger & Stefan Koss from 1999. After listening to it several times, and still getting a great feeling from it, I got the idea to reissue it on a regular label. I shared this with the musicians and they also found it a good idea. It was also helpful that the drummer from the session, Peter Müller, had, meanwhile. formed his own production company, STYX Records.
It is a pleasure listening to Gine`s blues singing, which is full of love, feeling, enthusiasm and expression, all major characteristics for that kind of music. Next to some of her own fine compositions, Gine also shows her adoration of the old blues singers like Jean Brady, Merline Johnson or Bertha „Chippie“ Hill with “Knockin` myself out“, „ I`d rather drink muddy water“, „Mellow man“ and „Trouble in mind“. Stefan Koss, born in 1966, is an outstanding pianist: he cherishes the old blues tradition with a deep profundity, which today can be heard from only a few pianists of that genre. Backing Gine, he also shows his abilities as an accompaning blues pianist. You can hear clearly the influences of Blind John Davis, Henry Brown and Scrapper Blackwell in his playing. He is also at home with boogie woogie, as proved by „Blind Sheep Boogie“, which is very reminiscent of pianist Cecil Gant. „Helmut`s Boogie Woogie“ is dedicated to Gine`s brother, who financed the session in 1999. The fresh titles were recorded in 2016. It is noteworthy that Gine sings „ Got the blues so bad“, a composition by Victoria Spivey from 1926, with the same intensity as she sang the session sixteen years earlier. The reason that the music on this CD is totally up-to-date is that the other accompaning musicians like Michael Hudec on bass and Peter Müller on drums are still the best on their instruments. ~CDBaby
