This album was recorded in 1968 in Switzerland at two different venues. Tracks 1-5 are previously unreleased and tracks 6-17 were released on the Storyville label as "Eddie Boyd-Live". Boyd found Europe to his liking and moved there in the '60s, and this set has his first solo performances except for one previous track on the Sonet label. The sound is actually pretty good with a slight flatness to the sound--no doubt from the live recording techniques of the period. The booklet has an informative essay on Boyd and his music. This is somewhere between 3 and 4 "stars" but I 'm biased so I lean toward 4 "stars"--to each his own.

Boyd has a natural swing in his vocals and in his piano style. This set is a good example of authentic Chicago style piano blues. Many of these tunes are in a medium/up tempo shuffle mode with Boyd's vocals out front. He's best know for his song , "Five Long Years", which has become a blues classic, along with a couple of other tunes which are also here.

I first heard Boyd when he played with Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac way back in the late '60s. Once I heard his voice and his piano I was hooked. He recorded a couple of albums with Green, and a number of other English blues musicians that are well worth hearing. But his strongest work was done in the '50s-'60s for several labels in the Chicago area. Many of these sides have just been reissued ("Eddie Boyd Blue Monday Blues") and is a treasure chest of Chicago piano-based blues.

But on this set Boyd is all alone and sings many of his own compositions which highlight his lyrics and arranging skills. "Five Long Years" is here as is "Early In The Morning", "Third Degree", and other fine examples of his writing/playing/singing skills. If you've heard his late '60s work with Green you have some idea of how good a performer he is. And here all alone with his piano, there's no real low points--he knows the blues and how to communicate it to an audience.

Boyd never got the acclaim he should have during his hey-day except for his singles. And when the late '60s British blues era was popular he never really came to the attention of blues fans then either. and that's too bad. Boyd was a prime example of Chicago piano blues. His rolling, easy piano style and his knowing. pleading vocals, along with his song writing skills make him an unsung giant among Chicago blues piano performers. Sadly this review will reach only a few blues fans, but hopefully someone will hear Boyd and wonder how they missed hearing him until now. ~Stuart Jefferson

b. Edward Riley Boyd, 25 November 1914, Stovall, Mississippi, USA, d. 13 July 1994, Helsinki, Finland. Boyd was a half-brother of Memphis Slim and a cousin of Muddy Waters. He spent his early years on Stovall’s Plantation but ran away after a dispute with an overseer. Self-taught on guitar and piano, he worked around the south during the 30s, as both ‘Little Eddie’ and ‘Ernie’ Boyd, from a base in Memphis, before settling in Chicago where he worked in a steel-mill. He was active in music, performing with Waters, Johnny Shines and John Lee ‘Sonny Boy’ Williamson before he had his first big hit under his own name with ‘Five Long Years’, on the Job label in 1952. He recorded extensively for Chess Records, having successes with ‘24 Hours’ and ‘3rd Degree’.

He journeyed to Europe during the ‘Blues Boom’ of the 60s and, considering himself too assertive to live comfortably in the USA, took up residence first in Paris and later in Finland. During this period he appeared with artists as diverse as Buddy Guy and John Mayall and recorded in England, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France and Finland. His 1967 album on Decca Records, produced by Mike Vernon, features some of the cream of the British blues movement; John Mayall, Peter Green, John McVie, Tony McPhee and Aynsley Dunbar. His piano-playing was steadily functional rather than spectacular and his main strength was his ability to put together lyrics that were pithy and acidic. ‘Five Long Years’ has become a blues standard and features in the repertoires of many singers including Waters and B.B. King. /Biography by AllMusic

Edward Riley Boyd (November 25, 1914 – July 13, 1994) was an American blues piano player, born on Stovall's Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, United States. Boyd moved to the Beale Street district of Memphis, Tennessee in 1936 where he played piano and guitar with his group, the Dixie Rhythm Boys. Boyd followed the great migration northward to the factories of Chicago, Illinois in 1941. He wrote and recorded the hit songs "Five Long Years" (1952), "24 Hours" (1953), and the "Third Degree" (co-written by Willie Dixon, also 1953). Boyd toured Europe with Buddy Guy's band in 1965 as part of the American Folk Blues Festival.

He later toured and recorded with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Tired of the racial discrimination he experienced in the United States, he first moved to Belgium where he recorded with the Dutch band, Cuby and the Blizzards. He settled in Helsinki, Finland in 1970, where he recorded ten blues records, the first being Praise to Helsinki (1970). He married his wife, Leila, in 1977. Boyd died in 1994 in Helsinki, Finland.

Personnel: Eddie Boyd (vocals, piano); Willy Donnie (bass); Eddie Hunton (drums).

Cadillac Baby ran a record label but a better way to think of him is as a hustler -- somebody who figured out how to make a buck by running nightclubs, store fronts and, eventually, a record label. That label, Bea & Baby -- which Narvel Eatmon named after himself and his wife, who was never crazy about her husband's designs on the record business -- launched in 1959, right when his hometown of Chicago was teeming with a bunch of terrific blues and R&B labels, including Chess, Vee-Jay and Delmark. Bea & Baby is never mentioned in the same breath as those imprints, probably because it essentially imploded in 1961, after Cadillac Baby ran afoul of the local musicians' union. He turned his attention to his store, recording the occasional session, then experiencing an unexpected revival in 1971, when Living Blues ran a long interview with Cadillac Baby conducted by Jim O'Neal. That was enough to stir some new interest in the label, so he dressed up some old 45s in the guise of a fake live album -- the only LP the label or its Ronald, Miss, Key, and Keyhole subsidiaries released -- and started to record new acts intermittently from that point until his death in 1991.

Once Cadillac Baby was gone, the legacy of Bea & Baby faded, with only Clyde Lasley's "Santa Come Home Drunk" appearing on a stateside various-artists collection. Earwig Music Company's Michael Frank administered that license, a task that led him to acquire the Bea & Baby catalog from Cadillac's widow. He embarked on the decade-plus mission to assemble Cadillac Baby's Bea & Baby Records: The Definitive Collection, a four-disc set that contains (with just a handful of justifiable exceptions) everything the label and its subsidiaries released, accompanied by a thorough history by O'Neal along with artist-by-artist biographies from Bill Dahl and, for the gospel acts, Robert M. Marovich.

The fact that there is a significant number of gospel tracks on this four-disc set underscores how Cadillac Baby recorded a bit of everything: vocal groups, uptown R&B, even rap in his waning years. Still, his bread and butter was the blues, music that he knew from his birth state of Mississippi and from the clubs he ran. He made deep connections, so he could get Eddie Boyd, Earl Hooker, Sunnyland Slim, James Cotton, and Andre Williams to cut records for his label (reportedly, Muddy Waters thought about jumping ship from Chess to Bea & Baby for a brief moment in 1959). He had a good ear, so he knew to cut Hound Dog Taylor as soon he heard him, waxing "My Baby Is Coming Home" over a decade before the guitarist's epochal debut for Alligator. Cadillac was also a bad businessman and treated artists cavalierly; in the case of Detroit Junior and St. Louis Mac -- both monikers handed to them by Cadillac without the artist's consent -- it could almost qualify as contempt. Despite all this, Bea & Baby and its sister subsidiaries not only recorded some terrific music, but they had a distinct identity. From the outset, Cadillac, his producers, and engineers and musicians recorded things quick and dirty, so the records still seem electrifying; they're greasy and gritty, music made with passion but with hopes of scoring a quick buck. Everybody involved with Bea & Baby was plying their trade, either as musicians or a hustler, and while the results may not always be perfect, that rawness is also why the set is so invigorating. This is down-and-dirty music recorded on the cheap, so it retains its excitement. It's a blessing that Cadillac Baby's Bea & Baby Records: The Definitive Collection has finally arrived, as its existence helps paint a fuller, richer portrait of Chicago's blues & R&B scene of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Eddie Boyd was a blues pianist, singer and songwriter who made his primary impact on the Chicago scene during the 1940s and 50s, before becoming a popular figure in the American Folk Blues tours of Europe during the 60s and beyond. Born on the same Mississippi plantation as Muddy Waters, and a half-brother of Memphis Slim, he moved to Memphis in the late 30s and in 1941 headed for Chicago, working in steel mills to finance his music activities. He played on many musicians sessions, and from 1947 recorded under his own name, initially for RCA, but subsequently for Regal, J.O.B., Herald and most notably Chess, before working with several other labels at the start of the 60s. His combination of boogie and jazz-tinged styles brought him an R&B No. 1 in 1952 with Five Long Years and subsequent Top 3 R&B hits with 24 Hours and Third Degree. This great-value 50-track 2-CD set comprises selected A and B sides from the 66 tracks he released on singles across this era for the RCA-Victor, J.O.B., Herald, Chess, Bea & Baby, Keyhole, Mojo & Art-Tone labels, and so represents a solid cross-section of his work. Its a entertaining showcase for his ability to work across the blues spectrum, from moody slow blues to fine rocking blues alongside some of Chicagos best musicians, and its an enlightening introduction to an underrated bluesman who merits a great deal more attention than he has received over the years.

Song History: "I Got a Woman" (originally titled "I've Got a Woman") is a song co-written and recorded by American R&B and soul musician Ray Charles. Atlantic Records released the song as a single in December 1954, with "Come Back Baby" as the B-side. Both songs later appeared on the 1957 album Ray Charles (subsequently reissued as Hallelujah I Love Her So).

The song builds on "It Must Be Jesus" by the Southern Tones, which Ray Charles was listening to on the radio while on the road with his band in the summer of 1954. He and a member of his band, trumpeter Renald Richard, penned a song that was built along a gospel-frenetic pace with secular lyrics and a jazz-inspired rhythm and blues (R&B) background. The song would be one of the prototypes for what later became termed as "soul music" after Charles released "What'd I Say" nearly five years later.

For nearly 20 years beginning in 1959, Chicago businessman Narvel Eatmon (aka Cadillac Baby) presided over his Bea & Baby record label, by far the most enduring of his many investments, which included a nightclub, a record store, an appliance repair service, and a confectionary. Some seven years after his demise, Wolf Records released a 24-track sampler from the Bea & Baby catalog. The lineup is very impressive, and reflects the original label's profile pretty well. It includes guitarists Hound Dog Taylor, Homesick James Williamson, L.G. McKinley, Robert Jr. Lockwood, and Earl Zebedee Hooker; pianists Eddie Boyd and Sunnyland Slim; blues harpists James Cotton, Carey Bell, and Little Mack Simmons; singing drummer Willie Williams; and vocalists Bobby Saxton and Andrew McMahon. This compilation is very similar to The Best of Cadillac: Meat & Gravy, a Bea & Baby "best-of" released by Culture Press in 1998. Unfortunately, the two simultaneously issued collections have 16 tracks in common. In 2003, Castle Music compounded the confusion by releasing a double-disc Bea & Baby collection called Meat & Gravy. Public comprehension of Cadillac Baby's legacy was muddled even further when the misleadingly titled Cadillac Records, a film based upon the story of the Chess label, came out in 2008. By then the Bea & Baby catalog was being administered by the Earwig Music Company, Inc., and plans were afoot for more careful, comprehensive, and conscientious reissuing. ~arwulf arwulf

Recorded in London, 1967 & 1968 (The last two tracks, recorded in Chicago, 1960).

Chicago blues pianist Eddie Boyd only released one album for Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label (7936 South Rhodes), so in addition to those 12 tracks, this reissue scrapes together another four rarities from around the same period (1967-1968) and two from 1960 to expand the song listing to 18. The bulk of this recording was laid down in a single day, a situation that kept the energy flowing in the studio. This was producer Vernon's second session with Boyd, two leftover tunes from his 1967 Decca album open the disc, so he was acquainted with the bluesman's method of working. The project was originally credited to Eddie Boyd with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, and indeed three quarters of that band (Green, Fleetwood, and McVie) provide backing duties for the majority of these tracks. The Mac, which had started to experience their first shot of stardom in the U.K., are in typically fine form with Green's slashing, quicksilver leads a particular treat. There are also vocal similarities between Green (who doesn't sing here) and Boyd, showing that this session was a two-way street. The pianist sounds relaxed and comfortable, especially considering the rushed atmosphere in which the recording was held. While there is nothing as classic as "Five Long Years," there is plenty of quality music as the Mac push Boyd to spirited performances of straight Chicago blues. But arguably the most attractive aspect of this single-disc compilation is not audible. Vernon's extensive, detailed, and captivating liner notes, laid out over 11 pages of small type, explain how the sessions came about, and more specifically Boyd's history and status in the blues world. They are beautifully written, as Vernon shows himself to not only be a fan and friend of Boyd, but someone who understood his importance as a blues artist. Die-hard Eddie Boyd fans who already own the majority of this material (two previously unreleased tracks from 1960 close the disc and four others were only available on hard to find singles) will need this just for Vernon's story. The sound has also been cleaned up, which brings Green's guitar and Boyd's voice even further into the spotlight on this terrific set. ~by Hal Horowitz

Bluebird Blues focuses on 25 excellent performances by John Lee Williamson (aka Sonny Boy Williamson I, not to be confused with Rice Miller aka Sonny Boy Williamson II). These tracks were originally recorded between May 1937 through November 1947 for RCA Victor and include the staples "Sugar Mama Blues," "Blue Bird Blues," and one of the most recorded tunes in both blues and rock, "Good Morning, School Girl." Joining the versatile prewar harmonica wizard on numerous tracks are Big Joe Williams, Robert Lee McCoy, Henry Townsend, Yank Rachell, Blind John Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Willie Dixon, and Eddie Boyd. If the only Sonny Boy you're familiar with is Rice Miller, give Sonny Boy I equal space in your collection. This is a great disc to start with. ~Al Campbell

The blues piano genre is arguably the root of much of modern American music. After blues, ragtime evolved, followed by jazz, and on down to boogie woogie and eventually rock 'n roll. Although the genre has seen many trends come and go, in contemporary times blues piano is no different that it was 100 years ago.

Since the piano man was usually unaccompanied, the genre developed into the sound of a one-man show. The player was responsible for creating all parts of the music: bass, rhythm, and melody. This type of playing became labeled as “boogie woogie” or “barrelhouse piano.” Blues became a larger part of the greater consciousness upon the release of brass player W.C. Handy's “The Memphis Blues” and “St. Louis Blues” in the early 1900s. The genre quickly made its way into the night spots of big cities, and boogie woogie became the genre of choice for parties in New York and Chicago, among others.

The genre continued to get more popular throughout the roaring twenties, but a decade later big bands were all the rage. However, boogie woogie was resurrected in the late 30's, thanks in part to a legendary performance by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, and blues pianist Pete Johnson and Carnegie Hall.

In the thirties, blues piano music was often played by swing bands such as Count Basie's. By the time the forties rolled around, smaller outfits centered around the piano developed a new twist on the blues. Known as “jump blues,” this genre was the among the most popular dance music after the World Wars, and historians recognize it as a precursor to the tidal wave of rock 'n roll.

Like several of the black jazz and blues players of his generation, pianist Eddie Boyd, tired of the racism in America and the general treatment afforded musicians, moved permanently to Europe in the mid-'60s, where labels like Sweden's Sonet Records were more than happy to record him. The session presented here took place in Stockholm in 1974, and features Boyd on piano and vocals performing original blues numbers backed by young Swedish players (and one American, Ed Thigpen, on drums), and while things don't have the powerful edge of a classic Chicago Chess Records session, it's close, and there is a charmingly loose and fluid feel working here, one that is perfect for the kind of easy, almost elegant blues that was Boyd's stock in trade. Things get off to a great start with the opener, "Lovesick Soul," and pretty much stay at the level through the set, with the impressive "Tell the Truth," the bubbling "Dedicated to My Baby" (an alternate version is added as a bonus track), and the refreshingly arranged "Zip Code" (which allows Boyd to cut loose on piano a little bit) being among the clear highlights. At his best, Boyd delivered a kind of light, airy, and transcendent version of the blues, one that featured as much hope as misery, and this set is a perfect example of his unique approach. ~Steve Leggett

In March of 1970 Eddie Boyd came almost by accident to Finland to perform as an opening act at a new nightclub in Helsinki. The audience was not interested in the blues; maybe 1970 was too early for a jazz and blues club to survive in Helsinki. Nevertheless, Eddie met his destiny on the very first day he set floor on Finnish soil, stumbling head over heels over a young and charming Finnish lady called Leila. So Eddie settled in Helsinki to live with Leila for the rest of his life. In 1970 Boyd recorded an album "Praise To Helsinki" in his new hometown. During the 24 years Eddie lived in Finland he recorded almost 10 albums, but performed quite infrequently. This album covers material from three sessions Eddie recorded for the Finnish Broadcasting Company. The first session (1970, tracks 1-3) with jazz musicians was not broadcasted. The second session (1972, tracks 5-9) was recorded with young rock musicians and Eddie toured in Europe with this band. Session 3 (1984, tracks 10-16) was recorded live during's Eddie's last public blues gig in Helsinki. The atmosphere was magnificient and the whole performance lasted for over two hours. The musicians are Finland's top notch jazz &nd rock players.

This Eddie Boyd compilation is devoted exclusively to the recordings he made after he left Chess in 1956 and includes tracks recorded for J.O.B, Oriole, Bea & Baby, Keyhole, Mojo, LaSalle, Art-Tone, Push, Palos and an EP, specifically recorded for the English market and issued on the Esquire label. Boyd redoes a few of his Chess recordings but most of the tracks are new originals showing his typical wit and intelligence. Most of the sides were recorded in Chicago with small groups which includes superb guitar work from Eddie King, Robert Jr Lockwood and Eugene Pierson. There is also one session cut in Memphis with Sammy Lawhorn on guitar. Four sides were recorded in Oakland, California - two featuring guitarist Lafayette Thomas. A superb set with excellent sound and discographical data.

Cuby & Blizzards - 2 albums: Live/Praise The Blues (with Eddy Boyd)

Although unknown to the English-speaking market, Cuby & the Blizzards have been one of Holland's top blues bands since the mid-'60s. Some of their early singles had a beat/punk orientation, particularly "Stumble & Fall" and "Your Body Not Your Soul," both of which would be reissued on various Dutch beat compilations a few decades later. They quickly settled into a straighter blues groove, however. Their claims to fame in the larger rock/pop world are that they briefly backed Van Morrison in the gap between his departure from Them and the beginning of his solo career, although details of the association remain murky; also, at one point lead guitarist Eelco Gelling was asked to join John Mayall's Bluebreakers, although he declined.
