An old timey super-group of sorts, its members included John Sebastian (who later formed the Lovin' Spoonful), mandolinist extraordinaire David Grisman, guitarist Steve Katz (later with Blues Project and Blood, Sweat and Tears), vocalist Maria D'Amato (who later became singing star Maria Muldaur), and famed American musicologist and pianist Joshua Rifkin. The band was short lived and in 1964 released their only album, the highly influential "Jug Band Songs Of The Southern Mountains". The group made numerous appearances on television and performed at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City. All selections newly remastered. ~ amazon

11. Guitar Rag (2:50)
12. One Eye on the Mountain (2:53)
13. No One's Coming Home (4:28)
14. Albatross (3:20)

Brian Fraser’s fourth album Passing The Time heralds a new band and a new sound. Fraser’s trio incorporates harmonica, percussion, lap slide guitar and didgeridoo. The result is his best work to date. The Brian Fraser Trio weave their music around ancient tribal rhythms. The album finds Geelong-based Fraser moving away from his traditional fingerpicking technique to embrace the slide steel guitar, his style suggesting that of 1920s Bluesman Blind Willie Johnson.

Mick Reid, on harmonica and backing vocals, hails from Boston, USA and has 20 years of blues harmonica experience behind him. Benny Owen, on percussion, didgeridoo and backing vocals, has previously toured with Blues legend Matt Corcoran and has performed with Ash Grunwald.

“The addition of lap slide guitar, percussion, harmonica and three vocalists has added a depth to my music that’s exceeded my expectations,” says Fraser. “It’s rare to find musicians who complement my music so well. Benny is simply ferocious on percussion and Mick’s playing creates a haunting atmosphere,” says Fraser.Passing The Time is drenched in dark, pensive tones absent in his previous work. A rendition of Bobby Blue Bland’s Ain’t No Love laments a cold and brutal world. Back Up Against The Wall paints a portrait of a life going nowhere. Fraser’s version of Blind Willie Johnson’s Nobody’s Fault But Mine is a tense glimpse at religious paranoia. The Cap Fits and Bo Diddley’s Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover injects the album with buoyant pearls of wisdom. The album’s finale, No one’s Coming Home, is a cathartic release of nervous tension.

Although Alberta Hunter, who had briefly come out of retirement, gets first billing on this CD reissue, in reality she shares the spotlight with two other veterans of the 1920s: Lucille Hegamin and Victoria Spivey. Each of the singers is featured on four songs apiece while backed by such top players as clarinetist Buster Bailey, trombonist J.C. Higginbottham, and Cliff Jackson or Willie "The Lion" Smith on piano. Hunter is in superior form on such numbers as "You Gotta Reap Just What You Sow" and "I Got a Mind to Ramble," although she would soon be out of music for another 15 years, continuing her work as a nurse. Hegamin (who had not recorded since 1932) was having a brief last hurrah, despite sounding good, and Spivey, reviving her "Black Snake Blues," would soon be launching her own Spivey label. This is a historic and enjoyable set recommended to both classic jazz and blues collectors. ~Scott Yanow

For the past decade, his recordings have earned Harrison Kennedy many accolades in the business. No less than B.B. King has hailed him as Canada’s premier blues performer. Singing and playing the mandolin, the banjo, the guitar and the harmonica in a mostly acoustic setting, his strong poetic writing and full sense of irony largely contribute to the growing success of this very special blues troubadour. His latest album, and his finest to date, Soulscape, displays formidable creativity as he delves into the many musical influences passed on to him. The release of this album is not only a giant step for Harrison; it is one for the blues.

24Pesos were founded by guitarist/singer/harp player Julian Burdock and bass player Silas Maitland who worked together with Geno Washington. Although the band hail from London, theres little else to give it away on this superb album when the styles and subject matters are so clearly American. Indeed its rare to hear such an impressive collection by a British artist of southern roots music as Busted Broken And Blue. The album is primarily the brainchild of Julian Burdock who composed the album, with Maitlands production and the quartet is completed by Moz Gamble on organ and Mike Connelly on drums who provide a raw groove as the band eases so comfortably between Blues, Gospel, soul, funk and hip hop. It commences with the story of Maxwell Street as Burdock sings of notable Blues greats over an infectious slide guitar riff. Never Saw The Devil by contrast has a sprightly Freddie King feel before the Blues stomp of Waiting At The Station with a superb blend of slide and harmonica. They do slow it down occasionally, notably on the acoustic ballad Somebody Else and the haunting slow and bluesy Night Becomes Day with poignant organ play from Gamble. The bands dedication is revealed through Live My Life To Sing The Blues and Burdocks dobro playing comes to the fore on the aptly titled Lowdown Sweet and Dirty. The band describes the album as an upbeat antidote to the doom and gloom of recession-hit Britain, yet it is so much more. This is a very strong, coherent release and well worth tracking down. ~Duncan Beattie

When The Ship Goes Down is the bands latest release on Ourgate records/Cadiz music. Produced by bassist Silas Maitland the album expands on the themes of their earlier release Busted Broken and Blue and is very much a crossover Blues album. The band recorded eighteen tracks over two days in London’s Perry Vale studios. All tracks were recorded live to capture the real band sound, spontaneity, excitement and vibe. The tracks were then developed in the band’s own studio. “We really worked on the arrangements for this record. Looking for a gnarly groove and grind, real songs and a sound that is unique, original unmistakably 24Pesos.” Eighteen tracks were pared down to eleven. “Having tracks to spare meant that we were able to produce an album that we are really proud of from start to finish.”
Groovin, powerful, raw and rockin’. When The Ship Goes Down is the bands most complete release to date...

Harris is a 66-year-old singer and electric blues guitarist from the hills of North Mississippi. His music shares much in common with that of his late friends, R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. But he also was influenced as a young man by the blues of his uncle-by-marriage Albert King and his cousin William Bell, who went on to become a soul legend at Stax Records in the 1960s and 1970s. Harris’ sound manages to marry the primal hill-funk of the Burnside/Kimbrough nexus and the greasy strut of a century of coarse Memphis blues.

The 12 tracks that make up Searching for Odell Harris range from gripping solo performances of blues standards like “.44 Blues,” “Laughing To Keep From Crying” and “Sitting on Top of the World,” to raucous band performances featuring support from Mississippi native Bill Abel on guitar and Steve Lightnin’ Malcolm on drums and bass. Abel has backed everyone from David “Honeyboy” Edwards and Henry Townsend to Sam Carr and Big George Brock. Malcolm has worked extensively with Jimbo Mathus, the Burnside Exploration and such elder statesmen of the blues as T Model Ford, Cedell Davis, Robert Belfour and Jimmy “Duck” Holmes.

Searching for Odell Harris was recorded during a single all-night recording session on the gulf coast of Mississippi. The name of the disc alludes to Harris’ legendary elusiveness. He rarely performs in spaces more public than a friend’s living room or front porch.

The CD is the first for Harris and the second for the label, which made waves earlier this year with the release of Back to Bentonia by Jimmy “Duck” Holmes.

Thanks to Marc.

Inspired by the music of Sam Cooke and B.B. King, the gospel-bred Benton began playing the blues during the mid-'50s while living in Toledo, OH. By 1959, he was leading his own band in Chicago. During the '60s, he cut a series of soul-slanted singles for local concerns (Melloway, Alteen, Sonic, Twinight) before hooking up with the great Willie Dixon in 1971.

Benton was a member of Dixon's Blues All-Stars for a while, and Dixon is credited as songwriter of Benton's best-known song, the agonized slow blues "Spider in My Stew." Its release on Stan Lewis's Shreveport-based Jewel Records gave Benton a taste of fame; its follow-up, "Money Is the Name of the Game," solidified his reputation. A 1979 LP for Jewel's Ronn subsidiary (logically titled Spider in My Stew) stands as one of the most engaging Chicago blues LPs of its era, its contemporary grooves abetting Benton's tasty guitar work and soulful vocals.

Benton cut three albums later on for Ichiban, but compared to his Ronn output, they were disappointing. On the Chicago circuit, Benton's extreme courage in the face of physical adversity will long be cited. He was on kidney dialysis for the last few years of his life as a result of diabetes, and a portion of his right leg was amputated in 1993 due to poor circulation (he had already lost part of the other a decade earlier). Still, he continued to play his brand of uplifting blues until the end.

Homesick James & Snooky Pryor - The Big Bear Sessions (2-disk set)

This double-CD set of Homesick James and Snooky Pryor is remarkable in that it is the first time the entire collection of these sessions has been assembled. There are 39 cuts over two discs. Included are three complete albums and cuts from two different compilations. James did one of these records himself, Home Sweet Homesick James, but Shake Your Boogie and the self-titled duet album were with Pryor. The album with Pryor is the most satisfying here because of the rawness of the backing band and the loose spooked-out groove of the proceedings -- more like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside than Muddy Waters. The version of "Crossroads" sounds like an entirely different song yet loses none of its power because of its hypnotic boogie. The earliest solo slide guitar material by James, like his version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Lonesome Train," also has the repetitive groove goin' on, but the guitar playing is so phenomenal it's distracting. The material from Shake Your Boogie is a straight-up good-time blues record; it's funky, greasy, and vulgar in all the best ways. The sound of the recording is also very warm and immediate. He and Pryor just get to it, burning up one blues classic after another. Again, James' slide playing is intense as hell; he's always on the beat, and letting the bottleneck ring against Snooky's harp. Even on the more laid-back tunes such as "Bottle Up and Go," the energy just crackles in the mix. The mix of originals to covers is about even, but it hardly matters since these cats make every tune their own. Once more, what these archival recordings prove is that Big Bear was a far more important label than originally thought, and they captured late performances by some of the absolute masters of the genre. This is essential. ~Thom Jurek

Kevin Russell pays tribute to one of the greatest blues legends Freddie King. A must for lovers of 'blues guitar playing'. "With love and respect, this is dedeicated to my favorite King"

Born and bred in Detroit “Motor” city, Kevin Russell grew up with the soulful “Motown” sound of the Funk Brothers, the immortal blues by the three(3) kings (B.B., Freddie and Albert), and the rock ‘n’ roll grit of bands ala “Grand Funk Railroad”. Musical influences that have shaped Kevin’s playing ever since. Kevin is always blending the ever important “feel good” bluesy rhythms, with soulful melodies, and delivers it with “motor city” attitude.

Recorded in San Francisco in 1992 with producer/harpist Mark Hummel’s band of the time, but not released until 2005 for reasons that are not explained in the liner notes, this is better than average traditional Chicago blues from one of the genre’s creators. All 14 tracks were cut in a single eight-hour session with no time for overdubs at the end of one of Arnold’s tours, which adds a more edgy but still professional tone to the album. Hummel’s tight band included a young Rusty Zinn on guitar and noted blues pianist Tom Mahon, both of whom take their share of solos and push Arnold to some of his better late-period performances. The program runs through standard Chicago shuffles and tempos, with tough remakes of Billy Boy’s own big hits such as “I Ain’t Got You,” “You Got Me Wrong,” and the dependable “I Wish You Would” as icing on the cake. Hummel keeps the sound stripped down and his band doesn’t hot dog the proceedings, while providing a solid and energized backup for Arnold’s expressive vocals and sturdy harp. While the world probably doesn’t need another version of his old friend Bo Diddley’s “I’m a Man,” this one adds extra verses most blues fans haven’t heard. Arnold pays tribute to Little Walter by including a cover of Walter’s arrangement of “Me and Piney Brown.” He also brings a few tracks from his mentor, Sonny Boy Williamson I, with “Sonny Boy’s Jump” and “I Hear My Name Ringing.” Consider this a warm-up for the harp master’s unexpectedly successful 1993 Alligator comeback, but it’s a powerful session on its own that proves Arnold hadn’t lost a step since his ’60s heyday. – Hal Horowitz

Arnold, a Sonny Boy (John Lee) Williamson acolyte who began his own career in Bo Diddley's band as a teenager, was the first Chicago blues star actually born in Chicago rather than the South. His on-again-off-again career has kept his vast talents from being fully discovered. He doesn't seem to have lost a step on this, the second of his two '90s comeback albums for Alligator. Billy Boy alternates between blowing wailing, vibrato-laden extended solos and crisp, punchy outbursts on harp, while his insinuating vocals remain sly and suggestive, full of nuance and fully convincing. The material includes remakes from his '50s glory days on Vee Jay such as "I Wish You Would" (which the Yardbirds popularized), the one-two punch of the emphatic "Mama's Bitter Seed" and the stomping "Man of Considerable Taste" and an epic revival of "Loving Mother for You," hilarious raunch (known under several different names) that he's also recorded before. With Bob Margolin and James Wheeler paired off on guitars, this is a contemporary blues album with distinct and tenacious roots.

thank you daba for the following translation:
As a blues and boogie pianist among others, the Spider Murphy Gang, one of the most accomplished organist of the Republic and to the east as one of the best zydeco accordionist and composer of the Mississippi. Munich's Ludwig Seuss has long played in the first groove League . His admiration for the famous, but also for the unjustly forgotten masters of their craft has done no harm. Seuss has always been a team player and musician musicians, especially with his now 13 own album. Virginia Blues Connection is now the band thought it important to stand as a self-focus. At the same time he fulfilled a dream to get to the living in Munich, tenor saxophonist Eddie Taylor and the Holmes Brothers drummer Popsy Dixon two veterans in the spotlight who have already experienced everything in the music business.

Hailing from New Zealand Billy TK Jnr has toured internationally since 1993 and has earned himself a reputation as a genuine guitar hero in the electric guitar blues scene as well as having video hits with ‘mainstream’ songs.

He has toured and worked with artists like George Thorogood, Jimmy Barnes, The Neville Brothers, Ian Moss and Junior Wells and has performed in the USA, Japan, Australia and around the pacific and has just returned from performing at the Fiji 2012 International Jazz and Blues Festival. Billy TK Jnr with the Groove Shakers made such a great impression with the promoter and punters at the Sydney Blues Festival in 2010 they have asked him to return to the festival in 2012 to be one of the headline acts. Billy first came to prominence in Australia in 2006 via a standout perfromance at the Narooma blues festival, following this Billy made an indent on the Australian tour circuit.

This album has had it’s own story behind it with the sudden and tragic death of his producer BenStockwell, just before finishing the final product. Billy has dedicated one of the album tracks‘Stevies Good Night Blues’ to Ben. After Ben’s tragic death Billy then had to make some serious decisions about the album and it’s direction. He met up with engineer producer of the year Andrew Buckton of 203 Studios in Auckland and decided to re record all the tracks. Billy feels he has a totally polished album ready for the global market place.

“They say that everything is about timing and this album feels like it has 'arrived' at the right location at the right time - I have recorded 2 albums in the past but none of them have ever felt or sounded as good as this - it is kind of a reflection of where I am at in my life' 'The album took 12 months to do - we recorded a first version of it and then lost the use of almost all of those tracks when Ben died'. ‘Sooo we re recorded everything in 4 days and what we have now is better than what we had before' - 'A strange and sad story but with a wonderful ending - I am very proud of this album and what I now have for the world to listen to is up there with the music of my heroes who inspired me to play.” ~Billy TK Jnr
