T-Bone Walker inspired a legion of young Texas blues guitarists during the years following World War II with his elegant electrified riffs and fat chords. Among his legion of disciples was Houston's Goree Carter, whose big break came when Solomon Kahal signed him to Houston's Freedom Records circa 1949.

Carter's best-known waxing, the torrid "Rock Awhile" (billed to Goree Carter & His Hepcats) emerged not long thereafter, its sizzling opening lick sounding quite a bit like primordial Chuck Berry. Freedom issued plenty of Carter platters over the next few years, and he later recorded for Imperial/Bayou, Sittin' in With, Coral, Jade, and Modern without denting the national charts. Eventually, he left music behind altogether. ~Bill Dahl

Gaz's Rockin' Blues is London's longest running one-nighter club. It was founded on the 3rd of July 1980 and was held at Gossip's on Dean Street until november 1995 when it moved to its current venue St Moritz in Wardour Street. The club promotes live bands each week.

Compiled by Gaz Mayall, eldest son of blues legend John Mayall, and owner of the legendary London club Gaz's Rockin' Blues, this CD updates the original LP released in 1981. Gaz's Rockin' Blues celebrates it's 25th anniversary this year. London's hippest club is known worldwide and is especially popular with Japanese visitors. The first 14 tracks replicate the 1981 release, and ten tracks are new to CD. Gaz tells the club's story in his entertaining and lavishly illustrated sleeve notes.

[3:04] 16. Albert Collins - Iceman

If one thinks of this set as truly an introduction to Texas blues, then it isn't really a very good one, but if one thinks of this as a collection of interesting mid-period modern blues sides from Texas, then it fares a good deal better, because there are several little gems preserved here. The leadoff track, Goree Carter's "Rock Awhile," originally released in 1949 by Freedom Records, is vibrant and fun, while Little Willie Littlefield's "Little Willie's Boogie" blisters along like a rampaging rocket (pianist Littlefield was only 17 years old when he tracked this scorcher for Eddie Henry's Eddie's Records in 1948). Clarence Green's gently funky instrumental "Walking the Baby," released originally on Bright Star Records, is another lost treasure, although it comes closer to being a soulful R&B strut than it does to being an actual blues. No Texas blues collection would be complete without a track from T-Bone Walker, and the one used here, a crisp and elegant minor-key version of Big Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go" from 1970 is a re-imagined masterpiece. Does this little anthology tell the whole story of Texas blues? Without even a single cut from Blind Lemon Jefferson or Henry Thomas, no it doesn't. Does it feature an interesting set of rarely heard tracks from several different Texas blues players in several different styles and approaches? Yes, it does, and that's why it works more than it doesn't. ~Steve Leggett
