Award-winning soul-blues singer Billy Price garnered international fame when he debuted as the vocalist for blues guitar legend Roy Buchanan in the 1970’s. Rising to the peak of the soul music scene, he and Otis Clay received a Blues Music Award for This Time For Real for Best Soul-Blues Album.

Now with his vocal pipes as strong as ever at age 74, he appears on the Little Village label with Person of Interest produced by Grammy-winner Tony Braunagel. Several great blues musicians gathered in the Studio City, CA studio with label founder/keyboardist Jim Pugh, bassists Larry Fulcher, James “Hutch” Hutchinson, and Reggie McBride, guitarists Josh Sklar, Shane Theriot, and Joe Bonamassa, plus background vocalists Maxayn Lewis, Fred White, and Will Wheaton. The horn section was comprised of baritone saxophonist Ron Dziubla, tenorist Eric Spaulding (regular member of Price’s band) and trumpeter Mark Pender with Lenny Castro on percussion.

All thirteen songs are Price originals, most co-written with Jim Britton (keyboards), Fred Chapellier (guitar), Braunagel and Nashville writing team Jon Tiven and Sally Young. Price did most of this writing during the pandemic, so it is not a stretch to say that these are among the most personal songs he has written. /Jim Hynes, Rock & Blues Muse

After the critically acclaimed success and Blues Music Award nomination of his last album 'Reckoning', Billy was excited and eager to get back into Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California with producer Kid Andersen. Kid and Billy's mutual love for the music and commitment to making an original contribution to the soul blues genre is evident in this new collection.

Kid and Billy assembled a first-class group of musicians on 'Dog Eat Dog', which features Price on vocals along with Andersen (guitars and assorted instruments), Alex Pettersen (drums), Jerry Jemmott (bass), Jim Pugh (keys), Eric Spaulding (tenor sax), Jack Sanford (baritone sax), and John Halblieb (trumpet). Andersen added congas to most tracks, covered by Jon Otis (son of the great Johnny Otis) and Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples). Randle also provided background vocals long with Lisa Leuschner Andersen, Charlie Owen, and the Sons of the Soul Revivers gospel group. 'Dog Eat Dog' also features guest appearances by Rick Estrin, Alabama Mike, and Mike Zito. Estrin plays harmonica on the title track, which he wrote. A big fan of Alabama Mike, Price was thrilled to share the lead vocals with Mike on "Dog Eat Dog". Mike Zito also contributed a scorching guitar solo on "All Night Long Café."

"Billy Price is an outstanding singer and artist. He's simultaneously steeped in the soul tradition and 100% original and instantly recognizable. He will make you believe anything he sings." - Christoffer "Kid" Andersen.

"I was taken and shaken by Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in the 1970s, when I was playing guitar in Muddy Waters' band. Billy has been one of my favorite singers, without qualification, ever since." - Bob Margolin

The transcontinental soul/blues duo of Pittsburgh's Billy Price and France's Fred Chapellier took their show on the road (in Europe) to support the release of the duo's Night Work debut. The results are contained on this CD/DVD package, a logical and energetic follow-up to the studio recording that reprises some — but not all — of those tunes, adds logical covers, and generally ratchets up the sparks, as live albums typically do. The 11-song audio CD runs about half the time of the far more extensive two-hour DVD, but both nail the vibe of shows that featured tough, resilient backing musicians augmented by two horn players. Covers such as those made famous by Bobby "Blue" Bland (an eight-minute version of "I'll Take Care of You,") Johnnie Taylor ("Last Two Dollars"), and especially O.V. Wright ("A Nickel and a Nail") make terrific additions to the originals and co-writes that appeared on the twosome's previous disc. Al Green's "Love and Happiness," sung on the studio take by guest vocalist Otis Clay, also benefits from Price's emotive singing on the concert adaptation. The DVD's extended playing time gives the band, and especially guitarist Chapellier, a chance to stretch out as they do on the instrumental "Blues for Roy," a tribute to Price's old employer Roy Buchanan which didn't make the cut onto the accompanying CD. He's a tasty guitarist, capable of opening up when needed, but just as content to lay back when the song doesn't require his leads. The DVD isn't terribly slick, which dovetails nicely with the soulful music, but effectively captures the proceedings with a minimum of edits and video distractions as they go through their paces in front of a small but enthusiastic club audience. Only five tracks are duplicated from Night Work, so those who own it will not only enjoy the more fiery live renditions here, but will get a large helping of the soul and blues classics that clearly inspire both Chapellier and frontman Price. The latter, after decades in the business without finding a lot of popularity, seems to have found a kindred spirit in the guitarist. It might be a bit early for a live album from this pair, but this was a hot ensemble playing an inspired batch of songs, and the performance takes the already exciting studio set to the next level.

Billy Price has been thrilling east coast audiences with his brand of rhythm and blues for the past three decades. In his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa., he is an institution. Price's popularity isn't hard to explain. As Geoffrey Himes of the Washington Post has written, "Unlike so many blues revivalists, Price is not an imitation of older, better singers--he's the real thing."

Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchanan's LPs, That's What I'm Here Forand Livestock. With Buchanan, Price toured the U.S. and Canada, playing such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Newport Jazz Festival, the Roxy and the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Price assembled Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in 1977. Before their breakup in 1990, the band recorded four critically acclaimed LPs and developed a reputation as one of the most exciting touring bands in the U.S.

Price formed The Billy Price Band in 1990. In addition to performing popular songs from Price's years with Buchanan and the Keystone Rhythm Band, the Billy Price Band features new interpretations of blues, R & B, and soul classics. The band currently consists of Lenny Smith (guitar), Willy Franklin (bass), H.B. Bennett (drums), John Burgh (keyboards), Joe Herndon (trumpet), Eric DeFade (tenor sax) and Rick Matt (baritone and tenor sax).

In April 1997, Billy Price released The Soul Collection, which featured a duet by Price and his friend and mentor Otis Clay on Clay's "That's How It Is," as well as background vocals by veteran Chicago vocalists Theresa Davis (former member of the Emotions), Robin Robinson, and Dianne Madison.

In Living Blues (September/October 1997), Bill Dahl called The Soul Collection "an inspired stroll through the glorious history of soul music [invested with] uncommon passion and authenticity." In the April 25, 1997 edition of the Washington Post, Mike Joyce called The Soul Collection "an R & B homage full of revealing and compelling performances...Price is a terrifically expressive soul singer," says Joyce, "one who conveys both the pain and the pleasure in these choice songs."

Can I Change My Mind on Green Dolphin Records was produced in Los Angeles by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams, who has also produced artists such as Z.Z. Hill, Doris Duke, Irma Thomas, Solomon Burke, Patti LaBelle, Lionel Ritchie, and others. Since its release in December 1999, Can I Change My Mind has received critical acclaim from publications throughout the world: A sure-fire winner! (Ray Ellis, Juke Blues) ...will please all fans of modern soul and soul blues (Peter R. Aschoff, Living Blues) ...the most imaginative and entertaining record in Billy Price's 30-year musical career (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) Price's expressive abilities define the term "deep soul" (Pittsburgh City Paper). Here is more information about Can I Change My Mind. For articles about Billy Price and more reviews, see our articles and reviews page.

Billy Price released a double CD, Sworn Testimony: The Billy Price Band Live, in July 2002. In July 2003, the Billy Price Band gave a critically acclaimed performance at the Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival in Billy Price's first-ever appearance in Europe. A DVD of the concert, entitled Funky...Funky Soul!!! was released in late 2003.

Billy Price's latest recording (May 2006) is East End Avenue on Bonedog Records, featuring the Billy Price Band on a set of 13 original new songs, including five songs co-written by Price with Jon Tiven. Tiven was the winner of three 2006 Blues Music Awards: Song of the Year for "Think of Me" by Little Milton, and Album of the Year and Soul Blues Album of the Year for the album of the same name, which Tiven produced. The CD also includes a cover of Dan Penn's "Faithful and True."

Former Roy Buchanan vocalist, "East Coast King of Blue-Eyed Soul." Two-CD live performance at the Ram's Head Tavern, Annapolis, MD, April 2002.

[4:21] 10. I've Got Love On My Mind

When veteran vocalist and bandleader Billy Price sings “Sweet Soul Music” on his new album, “Strong,” he isn’t covering the 1967 Arthur Conley hit. It’s a different lyric with a similar message and a wonderfully evocative reminder that Price has remained true to his R&B roots.

But then, in one way or another, every track on “Strong” reflects Price’s unwavering passions. Some prime examples: B.B. King clearly inspires the singer’s emotionally restless version of “Part Time Love,” complete with requisite horns and a pitch-perfect guest appearance by guitarist Monster Mike Welch. “Never Get Enough” salutes its celebrated authors — James Brown, Fred Wesley and Bobby Byrd — with a concert-ready funk workout. There are welcome echoes of Memphis soul and Al Green, beginning with the album opener, Roosevelt Sykes’s mournful “Drivin’ Wheel.”

Price, however, co-wrote the majority of songs, including two highlights — the inspirational “Gotta Be Strong” and the cautionary “Diggin’ a Hole.” Throughout the album, performances benefit from Price’s road-tested, seven-piece band and from appearances by a few more notable guests, such as the Nighthawks’ Mark Wenner and Mark Stutso.

Of course, fans who have followed Price’s impressive but often overlooked career from the ’70s know that he’s at his best onstage. It’s a safe bet that several songs from the aptly titled “Strong” will make his upcoming shows all the more stirring. ~Mike Joyce

'It’s Almost Time For Me To Go’ exhorts the Pittsburgh-based singer but not before he rips into the bluesy opener ‘Keep It To Yourself’, one of five songs Billy Price co-wrote with Jon and Sally Tiven for this varied and exemplary soulful 14-track CD produced by Billy with Jeff Ingersoll at the Mojo Boneyard studio in McKeesport, PA. Local song-writer Mike Sweeney contributes six songs including ‘Soul Sailin’’, possessing a similar feel to Solomon Burke’s ‘Soul Searchin’’, the nostalgic trip down ‘East End Avenue’, and a tribute to Dyke and The Blazers on ‘Funky Like Dyke, part 2’. Keyboardist Jimmy Britton penned the light-hearted, jovial romp ‘If You Cook Like You Walk’ whilst a lengthy take on the ballad ‘Faithful And True’, previously recorded by Z.Z. Hill, is the only non-original track on display. Billy enters Robert Cray territory on ‘The Other Side Of You’ but saves his best vocal performance for ‘The Price I Paid For Loving You’, a scorching piano-led deep-soul gem.

On some of his past recordings, Billy has tended to over-stretch at times, but here he hits the target with a mix of verve and restraint. Together with a set of quality songs and a tight, funky band replete with horns and back-ups, this top-drawer release deserves to catapult him to a much wider audience. ~Ray Ellis

Notes: 'Night Work', by Pittsburgh-based blue-eyed soul singer Billy Price and French blues guitarist Fred Chapellier, was released in Europe in March 2009. Fans of Price's work in the 1970s with guitarist Roy Buchanan are going to love 'Night Work'. Roy is one of Fred's biggest influences as a guitarist; in fact, Fred's last CD for DixieFrog was titled 'A Tribute to Roy Buchanan', and Billy Price appeared on that CD as a guest vocalist.
Mark Wenner, harmonica player of the Nighthawks, plays on three songs-the title song, written by Mike Sweeney from Pittsburgh; a new version of 'Who You're Working For', which Price recorded with Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band on the 'Free at Last' CD in 1988; and a new song written by Price, Sweeney, Sally Tiven, and Jon Tiven titled 'The Wrong Woman'. Also making a guest appearance on the new CD, singing Al Green's 'Love and Happiness', is Otis Clay.
Price and Chapellier wrote six songs for the new CD, BP Band keyboard player Jimmy Britton and Price wrote one, and Sweeney contributed a great tribute to O.V. Wright. Speaking of O.V. Wright, no Billy Price CD would be complete without at least one O.V. Wright cover. This time, it's 'Don't Let My Baby Ride'.
The CD is a true international collaboration. The Billy Price Band play on most of the tracks, but Fred's great band-Abder Benachour on bass, Pat Machenaud on drums, and Damien Cornelis on keyboards-play on three songs, with horns overdubbed by the Billy Price Band horn section.

Blues revivalist Billy Price, born November 10, 1949 in Passaic, NJ, took to singing at a young age and has performed professionally for more than two decades. He's a superstar in his adopted hometown, Pittsburgh, PA, America's doo wop capital. Price caught the public's eye as the vocalist for the Roy Buchanan Band. He's featured on two acclaimed albums recorded under Buchanan's name: That's What I'm Here For, in 1972, and Livestock, in 1974, both on Polygram. Price toured all over the United States and parts of Canada with the highlights being the Newport Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, the Roxy, and the Troubadour in Los Angeles, as part of Buchanan's crew.

After splitting with Buchanan, Price started Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in 1977. They stayed together 13 years and recorded four critically acclaimed albums including Is It Over, in 1980, and They Found Me Guilty, in 1982, both on Green Dolphin Records; Antenna Records has compiled the two albums on CD. Other Antenna CD's include Live (1984), Free at Last (1988). Billy named his new group the Billy Price Band in 1990 and increased their repertoire by including riveting interpretations of R&B & soul classics. Road band members are Lenny Smith (guitar), Willie Franklin (bass), H. B. Bennett (drums), John Burgh (keyboards), Ralph Guzzi (trumpet), Eric Defade (tenor sax), and Curtis Johnson (baritone & tenor sax). The Billy Price Band released Danger Zone, in 1993 on Corona Records, and returned to Green Dolphin Records in 1997 to record The Soul Collection, and Can I Change My Mind, in 1999. A diehard, Price will be around til he can't belt em' out anymore; arbitrary retirement is not in the cards for the blue eye soul singer who performs one of the most sincere brands of R&B/blues around. ~Bio by Andrew Hamilton
