We should celebrate Anthony Geraci for his fierce dedication to the real deal blues. He’s absorbed the form and consistently adheres to it when his talents could take him in many directions. Multiple BMA nominee and 2021 BMA Winner, pianist and bandleader Anthony Geraci delivers his second album from Blue Heart Records and his seventh as a leader with Tears In My Eyes. That of course doesn’t count his many stints as a band member of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, and The Proven Ones, among others.

Before playing a prominent role in those bands and embarking on a solo career, Geraci has the honor of backing the greats such as Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Jimmy Rogers, and many others and pays tribute to these ‘old masters” on this album with eleven tracks, six with vocals and five instrumentals. The current edition of the three-time BMA nominated Band of the Year Boston All-stars is guitarist/vocalist Barrett Anderson, drummers Marty Richards and Kurt Kalker, and bassist Paul Loranger. His former bandleader Sugar Ray Norcia takes the lead vocal on three tracks with Anderson on two and even Geraci on one of them. Blues violin champion Anne Harris guests on “Memphis Mist.” Drew Davies is on saxophone on four tracks with Mario Perrett playing sax on “Judge, Oh Judge.”

The album was recorded in two sessions, one in the Boston area for the first four tracks and the other amidst a European tour in Prague, Czech Republic. Seven original tunes were cut in that one day – tracks five through eleven. The major difference in personnel is just the drummer with Richards in Boston and Kalker in the Czech sessions. Otherwise, the core group is consistent throughout. Geraci lays claim to all eleven as originals. The album is sequenced in reverse with the Boston sessions appearing first, although they were recorded late. [---]

With four decades of music behind him, Geraci is still at heart a traditionalist as reflected in most of the album. He’s always had great piano chops but continues to grow in his songwriting and bandleading, even willing to reveal some contemporary tinges in a few places. Mostly though, he once again shows us how the real blues should go down. /Jim Hynes, Rock & Blues Muse

Well, there's nothing generic about Anthony and Sugar Ray! Ever since their early days together with Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, through their later work with Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, Sugar Ray Norcia and Little Anthony Geraci have shared a special musical chemistry that has kept their blues vital and fresh.

So sit back, enjoy this album, and welcome these gentlemen into our homes. Anthony and Ray, you don't just play the blues, you are the blues! ~Geeorge Lewis

12. Ode To Todd, Ella And Mike Ledbetter (1:11)

This past Fall, relatively recent in terms of live music shows given this health pandemic, this writer saw Boston-based pianist/composer/bandleader Anthony Geraci deliver a sizzling show with his core band that plays on this, Geraci’s third and best CD as a leader, Daydreams in Blue. Geraci, a long-time sideman in the New England blues scene as a key member of both Sugar Ray & the Blue-Tones and Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, has come into his own in recent years as a bandleader. And, he’s been noticed with BMA nominations for Pinetop Perkins Piano Award for five consecutive years in addition to many other nominations from prestigious outlets. Geraci has appeared on over 50 recordings from both vintage and contemporary blues artists.

Geraci’s core band features Boston favorite Dennis Brennan on lead vocals and harmonica (Brennan has several albums under his own name) and Boston-area stalwarts Michael Mudcat Ward (acoustic bass), Troy Gonyea (guitar) and Jeff Armstrong (drums). For this date, Geraci called on special friends – his bandmate with Sugar Ray & the Blue-Tones, the blazing guitarist Monster Mike Welch who graces eight of the dozen tracks, blues-rock icon Walter Trout who ignites “No One Hears My Prayers” along with Peter Ward on rhythm guitar, all abetted by the horn tandem of trumpeter/arranger Scott Arruda and saxophonist Mark Early. Ten are Geraci originals with covers of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine’s “Jelly, Jelly” and Brennan’s “Dead Man’s Shoes.”

As much as Geraci likes to play a Hammond B-3 organ, he sticks to his core instrument, the acoustic piano, and it’s his exceptional piano playing that stiches consistency throughout. The album opens with “Love Changes Everything,” a smoker marked by Geraci’s bright playing, strong horn parts, Brennan’s passion, and Welch’s incendiary solo. “Tomorrow May Never Come” is an infectious soul tune again with the same cast, and strong horn ensemble parts. Trout blows the roof off on the gutsy, deep “No One Hears My Prayers” against a thick, blaring horns backdrop. The requisite calm follows in Geraci’s wonderful lyrical piano into to “Daydream of a Broken Fool” before the band takes the syncopated tune into raucous territory, making way for both Geraci’s percussive attack and Welch’s searing lines.

”Mister” has Brennan blowing his blues harp as the tune struts along behind Geraci’s barrelhouse piano, a standout pure blues track, setting the stage for an outstanding four song sequence. The blistering boogie, rapid tempo “Tutti Frutti Booty” rather obviously nods to the late Little Richard, who was still alive when the tune was recorded. This is the only turn for Geraci on vocals. Brennan delivers “Jelly, Jelly” in his own style, knowing that it wouldn’t be wise to mimic Eckstine’s vocal, buoyed by Welch’s axe, and Geraci’s spot-on piano, as stellar blues piano as you’ll ever hear. Brennan’s “Dead Man’s Shoes’ is a dramatic tune – “What kind of man would wear those shoes?”- just keeps ringing indelibly.

The mood lightens with the shuffle “Hard to Say I Love You,” a showcase for Geraci, who is the only soloist, spurred on by Brennan’s emotive vocal and Armstrong’s beats. “Living in the Shadow of the Blues” is a piano-driven NOLA influenced tune. “Crazy Blues/Mississippi Women” is an old school approach with Geraci’s piano clearly prominent and rollicking in true blues fashion when Welch makes a rather surprise signature entrance. “Ode to Todd, Ella, and Mike Ledbettter” is Geraci in trio format for a brief nod, remembering family and friends.

Expect Geraci to garner more nominations with this one, and, better yet, a long deserved win. This is clearly in the higher echelon of blues albums this year. ~Jim Hynes

The Proven Ones - You Ain't Done

Size: 113,4 MB
Time: 48:12
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2020
Styles: Electric Blues, Blues Rock
Art: Front

01. Get Love Intro (0:58)
02. Get Love (4:00)
03. Gone To Stay (3:32)
04. You Ain't Done (4:01)
05. Already Gone (4:11)
06. Whom My Soul Loves (5:01)
07. Milinda (4:09)
08. Nothing Left To Give (5:35)
09. She'll Never Know (4:32)
10. I Ain't Good For Nothin' (3:57)
11. Fallen (4:42)
12. Favorite Dress (3:28)

It’s one thing to claim you are “proven,” it’s quite another to have the credentials to back it up. Comprised of five of the most formidable musicians on the blues scene today — guitarist Kid Ramos, vocalist Brian Templeton, keyboardist Anthony Geraci, bassist Willie J. Campbell and drummer Jimi Bott — the band has collectively amassed a slew of accomplishments; dozens of awards won, decades of years playing top-notch music, hundreds of recordings, thousands of hours on the road, and millions of fans worldwide. These five musicians have proven their worth to the world over decades of hard work.

The Proven Ones upcoming album, You Ain’t Done, expands the blues-rock template initially established with their debut effort, Wild Again. The latter garnered a 2019 Blues Music Award Nomination from the Blues Foundation for Best Contemporary Blues Recording and also brought Campbell, Geraci, and Bott individual nominations as well.

The upcoming album finds the band expanding their musical limits and making an even bolder statement. Produced, mixed, and engineered by Bott, and co-produced by the equally legendary Mike Zito, it was recorded at Dockside Studio in Maurice, LA (with additional recording at Roseleaf Recording in Portland, OR and Rear Window in Brookline, MA) and features songwriting contributions from each musician in the band.

“We wanted to stretch the boundaries for this record” Templeton explains. “For the most part we are all known as blues musicians, and rightly so, but we love many styles and naturally want to indulge in them as well. I think we’ve accomplished that with this record. There’s rock, soul, country, some Latin influence, a bit of pop, and, dare I say a punk vibe in parts as well. I believe it’s going to break down a few walls.”

That’s evident at the outset, the album starts with a needle drop and a psychedelic preamble to the rockin’ and robust song “Get Love.” The assertive stomp of “Gone to Stay,” “Already Gone,” and “You Ain’t Done” follow suit, with the latter recalling the rock steady groove of bands like Free and Bad Company. There are other, subtler, touches gracing the album as well: the heart-warming “Whom My Soul Loves,” which features a searing lead vocal from special guest Ruthie Foster, and the emphatic yet embracing ballad “Milinda.”

Still, the most touching tune on the album, and the one that resonates in particular with its songwriter, Jimi Bott, is “She’ll Never Know.” Based on a poem written by his sister to her infant daughter, it reflects a very personal perspective.

“When my sister died from substance abuse and mental illness in 2008, she and my niece had not spoken in years; they were estranged, and their rocky relationship was never resolved. The chorus I wrote was my hope of what my sister may have been feeling as she watched from the sidelines while her daughter grew up and became extremely successful. The song captures the melancholy that she was never able to share in or be a part of her daughter’s life. It is, for me, about a mother's love and regret but it can be about so many things to any parent who has been separated from their child for whatever reason.”

Members of TPO hail from bands such as The Fabulous Thunderbird's, The Radio Kings, The Mannish Boys, and Sugar Ray and the Bluetones. The Proven Ones can claim credits on literally hundreds of recordings. They have shared the spotlight with innumerable world class musicians at major music venues across the globe. Together, they make for a potent force all their own. Vivascene declared, “The familiarity between these musicians breeds a feeling of comfortability and a palpable camaraderie… that enhances each and every note they play.” Individually, their respective resumes place them in the upper echelon of contemporary blues players.

TRAIN TO KEY BISCAYNE is an exciting followup to Peter Ward's debut release, BLUES ON MY SHOULDERS which garnered rave reviews upon its release in 2017.
Ward, former guitarist for the Legendary Blues Band (Pinetop Perkins, Willie Big Eyes Smith, Calvin Jones and Jerry Portnoy) wrote 12 new blues, ballads and retro-style rock n roll — all with a fresh sound and '50s flavor.
Before they brought Peter into the band, the Legendary Blues Band were the guys who backed the great Muddy Waters. Hitting the road with those cats was like Blues 101 as the band crisscrossed the country in a van, traveling hundreds of miles each day to perform to delighted audiences at night. Peter learned then how to play a brand of unhurried unadulterated blues. Prior to that, Peter backed Jimmy Rogers, Junior Wells, Joe Beard, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Lowell Fulson, Louisiana Red and Sunnyland Slim. His blues philosophy is in finding an original way to play blues within a traditional framework.
TRAIN TO KEY BISCAYNE opens with a tribute Peter wrote to his hero, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, the former Muddy Waters guitarist. It's a song about Luther's own life. The album features Peter's friends, the renowned Ronnie Earl on guitar, Michelle "Evil Gal" Willson, Johnny Nicholas and Sugar Ray Norcia, all on vocals, and Peter's brother Mudcat on bass. Also appearing are Neil Gouvin on drums, Anthony Geraci on piano and the aforementioned Norcia on harp — all of the legendary Sugar Ray & the Bluetones — former John Copnlee keyboardist Hank Walther on piano, George Dellomo on drums, Bob Berry on bass, Aaron Gratzmiller on saxophone, Jiri Nedoma on piano and Keith Asack on bass and guitar.
The songs reflect joy, sadness, humor and everything in-between.
"Coffee Song," sung by Willson, is about serving piping hot coffee and pancakes in bed to the person you care about without worrying who does how much for whom. There's a story about road rage "Something Always Slows Me Down," persistence and love "When You Are Mine" and the journey we dare take to revive a friendship "Train to Key Biscayne."
Ronnie Earl called the record inspiring and Peter thinks his fans will like this album! He hopes to reach a wider audience with this new release.

It’s been said often that one’s reputation is determined by the people one picks as friends and collaborators. If true, then count Anthony Geraci as one well respected musician. Geraci has spent most of the last four decades climbing into the rarified air of the blues. In the nascent days of the 1970s Boston blues scene, Geraci learned from keyboard mentors like David Maxwell, Ron Levy, and Al Copley who thrived in the New England blues scene back in the early 1970s. Next, Geraci was the first to play keys with Ronnie Earl’s Broadcasters and Sugar Ray Norcia’s Bluetones. Throughout the decades, Geraci’s dedication to mastering the intricacies of the blues piano burned in his soul, which led to Geraci searching out elders in the genre like Pinetop Perkins and Henry Gray to assimilate the traditions into modern outlooks.
The most important lesson Geraci absorbed is surrendering the individual to the will of the music. In all his previous recordings, especially his 2015 critically acclaimed Fifty Shades Of Blue (Delta Groove,) Geraci understands the artistic power of sharing the spotlight with an all-star cast of backing musicians.
"Why Did You Have To Go" follows that same blues print. Each song features Geraci enlisting an outstanding cast of artists to paint his musical landscapes. Geraci’s West meets East blues features past members of the Mannish Boys – Kid Ramos (guitar), Willie J. Campbell (bass), Jimi Bott (drums), Sugaray Rayford (vocals)– on five tunes while the Bluetones – Monster Mike Welch (guitar), Troy Gonyea (guitar), Sugar Ray Norcia (vocals), Michael Mudcat Ward (bass), and Neil Gouvin (drums) – blend with New Englanders Ronnie Earl (guitar), Michelle “Evil Gal” Willson (vocals), Brian Templeton (vocals), Dennis Brennen (vocals), Marty Richards (drums), Sax Gordon (sax), Doug Wolverton (trumpet) on six tunes. Including Geraci, count how many Blues Music Awards and nominations this talented roster has amassed. The real fun comes when Geraci shuffles the players from each coast to ignite the session.
Most exciting is the reunion of the original Sugar Ray and the Bluetones on Geraci’s “My Last Goodbye.” At nearly ten minutes of unhurried, emotional blues, the song spotlights Earl’s sharp phrasing combining with Geraci’s tight, Chicago blues keyboard lines that crest to stirring crescendos that ebb and flow into fresh musical vistas. The Bluetones also reunite on the up-tempo “Time’s Running Out.”
The unexpected surprise is the after hours testifyin’ on “Baptized In The River Yazoo,” an intimate duet featuring Texan blues force Willie J. Laws bearin’ witness to Southern folk lore as Geraci’s lonely piano floats out of cotton field churches.
In his performance of various piano styles, Geraci presents listeners with a concise history of the piano in American roots music. From New Orleans-styled R&B – “Long Way Home” – to stylish West coast – “Angelina, Angelina” – to Texas organ trio – “Don’t The Grass Look Greener” – to Chicago blues – “My Last Goodbye” – to the more modern Blue Note inspired “A Minor, Affair” – Anthony Geraci is right in step with his blues. ~Art Tipaldi – Editor, Blues Music Magazine

I grew up wearing out the vinyl records trying to understand how Robert Jr. Lockwood, Tiny Grimes, Louis Meyers and Jimmy Rogers made songs sound so good. It’s what I wanted to do. I was lucky to sit in often with my friend (and former roommate) Ronnie Earl and play alongside many of my musical heroes. A highlight was touring with the Legendary Blues Band: Joe Willie ‘Pinetop’ Perkins, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, Calvin ‘Fuzz’ Jones and Jerry Portnoy, who had brilliantly backed Muddy Waters for years. The way they played blues was everything I believed in, then and now. Willie Smith was an inventive drummer — and a wily character. I pay tribute to him in the song, ‘Drummin’ Willie.’ The track ‘Which Hazel’ is my homage to Chuck Berry. Sugar Ray Norcia honored me by singing the heck out of ‘Collaborate,’ a tribute to Lockwood and Lonnie Johnson. I appreciate that Ronnie Earl and Sax Gordon Beadle accepted my invitation to perform on two songs: ‘A Little More’ and ‘It’s On Me.’ ‘Southpaw’ is my ode to lesser-known left-handed swing guitarist Dickie Thompson, who worked with organist and front man Wild Bill Davis. My instrumental, ‘Shiprock,’ reminds me of a hallowed part of Navajo country I visited with my wife Mai Cramer, who died of breast cancer in 2002 and previously hosted a popular blues program every weekend for 24 years on WGBH-FM. She was an avid supporter of the blues and its purveyors. I think she would have liked Blues on My Shoulders. I hope you do.”

As a teenager growing up in Lewiston, Maine, Peter and his brother Michael (“Mudcat”) listened intently to blues records and went to see Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Taj Mahal and Hubert Sumlin whenever they performed in the area. Peter played blues with Mudcat and did gigs also with his younger brother Jeff, who died in 1991. “Jeff was too young to drink, but club owners would let him in so he could play bass with New York City drummer Ola Dixon and me,” Ward recalls.

Ward later moved to Boston and played in various bands, frequently sitting in with Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, who then featured his brother and Ronnie Earl, and backed blues artists such as Jimmy Rogers, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson and Lowell Fulson. ~by Mark Pucci Media

Kilborn is known for their traditional Chicago blues and R&B sounds with a rollicking contemporary sensibility. With seventeen years on the road, The Tolono Tapes is a taste of what happens when Kilborn Alley gets together in the studio with some of the friends they've made in their travels. Jackie Scott stops by to share some sweet R&B, piano man Henry Gray and harp master Bob Corritore lay down some Chicago blues, guitarist Monster Mike Welch and piano guru Anthony Geraci give a fresh take to some Kilborn Alley originals, Ronnie Shellist and Joe Asselin contribute harmonica work on some Kilborn and Scott originals, Corey Dennison and Gerry Hundt lend their blues wizardry to some ''in the studio'' compositions, and Cerbo raps over ''Sure Is Hot.''

As I'm Sitting in the House of Blues on this cold winter Monday with English blues giant Otis Grand, drummer Neil Gouvin and west coast singer Curtis Salgado, Curtis is suggesting thai I should not write generic liner notes. Well, there's nothing generic about Anthony and Sugar Ray! Ever since their early days together with Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, through their later work with Ronnie Rarl and the Broadcasters, Sugar Ray Norcia and Little Anthony Geraci have shared a special musical chemistry that has kept their blues vital and fresh.

So sit back, enjoy this album, and welcome these gentlemen into our homes. Anthony and Ray, you don't just play the blues, you are the blues!

12. It's Been A Long Time (2:58)

After winning seven Blues Music Award nominations for their 2014 ‘Living Tear to Tear’ CD release, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones follow up with a genuine and solid blues CD release that brings you back to the time before blues became blues-rock. It’s got that feel, that ambience, that emotion often devoid in many of the so called blues rock releases found elsewhere.

Of the 12 tunes on this disc, 11 are originals plus one instrumental cover of B.B. King’s “You Know I Love You” which rivals B.B.’s own original recording.

The Bluetones, led by Sugar Ray Norcia on vocals and harmonica, are really a ‘super star’ group within themselves featuring Monster Mike Welch on guitar, Anthony Geraci on piano and organ, Michael Muscat Ward doing duty on bass and Neil Gouvin solidly understated on drums.

Sugar Ray reels you back to hollars of the Mississippi Delta with his original tune, ‘Keep on Sailing’ when black workers on the levee’s, prison road gangs and cotton fields could only sing surreptitiously of escaping the denigrating social/racial system prevalent in the South.

There isn’t a song on this fine release that is not true to its roots. A mix of tempos, a mix a topics and a wailing good CD release which wouldn’t surprise me if it matched Sugar Ray & the Bluetones 2014’s 7 nominations. ~by Steve Douglas

Ronnie Earl - Healing Time

Scans: Full

1. Churchin' (7:12)
2. Catfish Blues (4:49)

8. Song For A Brother (3:42)
9. Bella Donna (5:36)
10. Blues On A Sunday (9:49)
11. Amazing Grace (2:14)

Guitarist Ronnie Earl continues his string of all instrumental albums with this stunning follow-up to 1997's critically acclaimed The Colour of Love. With sturdy yet subtle assistance from Anthony Geraci on keyboards, Mark Greenberg or Don Williams on drums, Michael "Mudcat" Ward on bass, and, for two tracks, special guest Jimmy McGriff handling the Hammond B-3 in his inimitable fashion, Earl peels off sweet and spicy jazz-blues-gospel licks with the touch of a musician whose heart and soul is intimately infused in his music.

Earl's love of Muddy Waters shines on a sizzling cover of "Catfish Blues" where his guitar alternately screams and moans through the stop-start rhythm of the song as if it's singing the lyrics. But this is primarily a jazz album with a heavy blues influence, and Earl's Kenny Burrell and Grant Green roots are pervasive throughout. His tensile tone ranges from tender and sensitive to biting and majestic, with touches of Carlos Santana's unique phrasing thrown in. Whether digging deep into the achingly soulful slow groove of "Blues for Shawn" or closing out the album with a rapturous "Amazing Grace," Ronnie Earl proves himself to be a master of moods. Healing Time effectively moves him into the realm of the guitar greats he idolizes. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Dutch blues vocalist and harp master Pieter "Big Pete" van der Pluijm may not be a familiar name to American blues audiences, but he's already well-established in the Netherlands – his native home base in North-West Europe. At 23, Pete was handpicked for a European memorial tour to honor the music and memory of legendary harmonica player and vocalist Lester Butler (the Red Devils and Thirteen), backed by several of Lester's original bandmates. The project was met with great success and critical acclaim, so more tours and a CD by the Lester Butler Tribute Band soon followed, securing Pete's arrival on the scene as one of the premier next generation blues performers in the Benelux region. Since then, Big Pete has gone on to form and record many other successful projects including his debut release "Bathroom Acoustics" by The Strikes, a couple of CDs by the rockin' 50's Chicago blues outfit The Backbones, and most recently, the more progressive and forward-thinking group M.O.C.T. (Men Of Considerable Taste). Pete's growing reputation has also led to tours and performances backing many internationally acclaimed blues artists including Alex Schultz, Mitch Kashmar, Monster Mike Welch, Hook Herrera, Matt Schofield, and Ian Siegal. Pete's informal introduction to the U.S. market materialized in March 2010 with his appearance on The Mannish Boys' 5th anniversary release "Shake For Me." Pete closed out the album in style paying tribute to his hero Lester Butler on the storming New Orleans romp "Way Down South," backed by Kid Ramos, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott along with special guest pianist Andy Kaulkin, who previously recorded with Lester Butler on the classic album "Thirteen." Now Holland's best kept secret makes his official American solo album debut with an incredible all-star recording lineup featuring Kim Wilson, Paul Oscher, Al Blake, Johnny Dyer, Alex Schultz, Kirk Fletcher, Kid Ramos, Rusty Zinn, Shawn Pittman, John Marx, Mojo Mark, Rob Rio, Willie J. Campbell and Jimi Bott. “Choice Cuts (DGPCD149)” is guaranteed to be an instant classic not to be missed by anyone who considers themselves a true blues lover!

Michelle "Evil Gal" Willson: vocals (2 & 5)

Anthony Geraci (pronounced Jur-Ah-See) it seems has always known he was going to be a piano player. Out of the blue as a four year old, he told his parents he needed a piano. Although he describes his folks as not being into music or being particularly musical, they always supported his passion. The New England native admits, “Music is just something that I was born with. It is something that is just inside me.”

Geraci started out on an old upright and soon thereafter a baby grand piano was introduced into the household. So were lessons and some serious musical training. Even at a young age his teachers recognized his sense of improvisational instincts. Geraci attended the Neighborhood School of Music in his hometown of New Haven, Connecticut, which was affiliated with nearby Yale University. That education continued at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Outside of these prestigious institutions in this Ivy League environment, another type of musical education was happening after school. At a young age Geraci befriended a like minded school mate, Ed Cherry, who would go on to become an accomplished jazz guitarist. Day after day, year after year, the two youngsters would go home after school and listen to blues records. Muddy Waters, early Buddy Guy and perhaps most notably Jimmy Rogers and others were listened to over and over again. “I remember the album Chicago Bound by Jimmy Rogers. That record turned my mind around. Here was music that was so simple yet, so complex at the same time. That record took me by storm. It had everything I was looking for in music. I heard that record when I was sixteen years old. Five years later Jimmy Rogers was my roommate on the road.”

That’s pretty much the way it has been for Anthony Geraci. He has played and recorded with a laundry list of the greatest blues musicians in the most prestigious blues nightclubs and at major festivals around the world. The names read like a who’s who of the blues. They include Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, J.B. Hutto, Big Walter Horton, Otis Rush, Big Mama Thornton, Hubert Sumlin as well as Jimmy Rogers and that’s the short list. He was also a founding member of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters. However, Geraci is probably best known as a founding member of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones and after 35 years he remains an essential component of that band, which is still going strong.

Geraci cites a long list of influences. They include musicians from a variety of schools, including boogie woogie masters like Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson to New Orleans players such as Professor Longhair and Huey “Piano” Smith. He also cites Chicago blues masters such as Otis Spann, Eddie Boyd and Memphis Slim as important ingredients of what he calls the “Anthony Blues Stew.”

Anthony Geraci and the Boston Blues All-Stars make their Delta Groove Music debut with their album "Fifty Shades of Blue." The Boston Blues All-Stars are the same musicians Geraci has been playing with for parts of the last five decades. They include vocalists Toni Lynn Washington, Darrell Nulisch, Michelle “Evil Gal” Willson and of course Sugar Ray Norcia. As Geraci points out, “I don’t sing, so why not get the best.” The “best” are backed by guitarist “Monster” Mike Welch, bassist Michael “Mudcat” Ward and drummers Marty Richards and Neil Gouvin. The All-Stars take on thirteen Geraci penned numbers that are full of fresh original ideas that are applied to music that come from many shades of the blues palette.

Little Anthony & The Loco-Motives - 2 albums: Can't Take It/Don't Wait On Me

Album: Can't Take It
Year: 1993
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 48:29
Size: 111,2 MB
Styles: Modern electric blues
Scans: Full

1. Can't Take It ( 4:18)
2. Did Not Like What I Saw Last Night ( 3:07)
3. Positions Wanted ( 3:14)
4. Back In Love ( 5:22)
5. Can't Get You Off My Mind ( 4:48)
6. Loving You ( 3:39)
7. Half Not Whole ( 4:57)
8. Lucille ( 3:28)
9. Talking About You ( 4:39)
10. Eight Rooms Of Gloom (10:53)

The Little Anthony heard on this CD shouldn't be confused with the Little Anthony who led Little Anthony & the Imperials in the 1950s and '60s. While that Little Anthony was an R&B/pop singer with a strong teen following, Little Anthony Geraci is a blues pianist who backed Pinetop Perkins, Roosevelt Sykes, and others before making his recording debut as a leader with Can't Take It.

Geraci's band, the Loco-motives, is a hard-driving horn band that is greatly influenced by Chicago blues but is also hip to early rock & roll, jump blues, Memphis soul, and jazz. Singer Karl Kelly brings a lot of passion to an inspired cover of Little Richard's "Lucille" as well as songs that Geraci wrote or co-wrote, which range from the moody "Eight Rooms of Gloom" to the in-your-face "Talking About You" and the humorous "Positions Wanted" (a commentary on the challenges of looking for work when the number of applicants exceeds the number of jobs). Meanwhile, "Can't Get You Off My Mind" finds Kelly detouring into jazz-influenced torch singing. Can't Take It wasn't a big seller, but despite being little known, it's a pleasing effort that's worth searching for. /Alex Henderson, AllMusic

7. What Can I Do? (3:55)
8. Baby (5:08)
9. You Can Run But You Can't Hide (4:12)
10. Free Thinking (8:46)

Still anchored by the triple threat of Little Anthony Geraci on keyboards, Karl Kelly on vocals and Anne Hamel on guitar, and one of the tightest rhythm sections around, the band has recently added horn greats Amadee Castinell and Gordon Beadle to their devastating lineup. The resulting musical progression is heard on Don't Wait On Me, a full throttle excursion into the heart of R&B and blues.
