Bucks County guitar man, Mike Guldin, lives by the prophetic word of the Wille Nelson song “The Life I Love Is Making Music with my Friends,” slinging a six string since a teenager and leading his band, Rollin’ & Tumblin’, for over twenty years. His fifth album, The Franklin Sessions, are eleven new tracks recorded at The Rock House in Franklin TN, owned and operated by Grammy-winning musician and producer, Kevin McKendree. The pair brought in Guldin’s band mates and a gathering of special friends to capture the nine originals and three cover songs. The players include Kevin McKendree, James Pennebaker, David Santos, Yates McKendree, Tim Hooper, Bill Sharrow, Billy Wear, Mikey Junior, Su Teears, along with the Philadelphia Funk Authority Horns -Dale Gerheart, Kyle Hummel, Neil Wetzel, Andrew Kowal - with background vocals from The McCrary Sisters.

Young phenom Yates McKendree delivers the beat, and his Dad, Kevin, lays down the barrelhouse piano on the opening twelve bar “Franklin Shuffle.” The crew gives Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killin’ Floor,” the full Rollin’ & Tumblin’ treatment, stretching out the blues standard like the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore. Guldin and The McCrary Sisters take us to church on the gospel fueled plea for benevolent hope “The Right Thing” that features Yates on lap steel. Guldin offers some free advice over a slinky second line beat from Billy Wear on the New Orleans spiced “Sometimes You Gotta Roll The Dice,” and he trades hot licks with young McKendree on the Chicago Blues prototype “Blow Wind Blow.” The rhythm section swings hard with the Authority Horns adding color to the sentimental Retro Soul ballad “Prisoner Of Love.”

Guldin lauds the charms of his lady during the Texas shuffle, “Smokin’ Woman,” and powerhouse vocalist Su Teears joins him for the horn driven duet “Two Hearts,” adding more Philly Soul to the mix. The vaudeville blues-style song, “Sad And Lonely,” is a snappy ramble ala Trouble In Mind. Guldin demonstrates his sharp tongue and quick wit on the jaunty “Gettin’ Over You Is Workin’ Over Me.” The album finale, “Divin’ Duck Blues,” rocks hard on a driving bass line from Bill Sharrow and Mikey Junior adds hot blues harp to the jamming take on the much-loved Sleepy John Estes’ classic.

The Franklin Sessions were reportedly a brief affair with the tracking done in only a few days, but they bear some fine fruit in the harvest. ~Rick J Bowen

The legendary Willie Nelson famously sang ”the life I love is making music with my friends,” and Bucks County guitarist Mike Guldin has been living by that axiom for over 45 years. The leader of the two-time International Blues Challenge finalists, Rollin’ & Tumblin,’ has acquired a rich network of friends, who have appeared as special guests on his albums with latest release “Tumblin’” following that same formula of a collaborative musical funhouse.

The ambitious collection of thirteen original songs and two tried and true covers runs the gamut of style from rock to country, blues to soul, recorded at seven different studios by over a dozen players. Guldin and songwriting partner and co-producer Bill Sharrow (Black Cat Studio, Spring Mount, PA), invited acclaimed Philadelphia area musicians - Mikey Junior, Roger Girke, Will Hodgson, Craig Thatcher, and Kevin Vannoy - to sit in with the band along with special guests Kevin McKendree, James Pennebaker, Lewis Stephens, and Luis Mora, each adding unique spice to the eclectic music mix.

The sizzling instrumental title track ‘Tumblin’’ opens the show, by paying tribute to their musical heroes. The herky-jerky shuffle ‘Sad And Lonely,’ features fine barrelhouse piano from McKendree on a classic tale of a man done wrong. The Taj Mahal standard “She Caught The Katy,” is given a southern rock treatment with greasy slide guitar from Craig Thatcher. Mikey Junior steps up to the mic joining Guldin in singing the praises of their favorite watering hole during the swampy boogaloo ‘Twisted Tail.’ Pennebaker drops in authentic pedal steel on the honky-tonk anthem ‘Alabama Pines,’ celebrating the laid-back life in the country. The horn driven ‘Raise A Ruckus,’ is a dose of the Muscle Shoals sound with Vannoy delivering a Bobby Keys’ salutation on his tenor sax.

Guldin flips the old expression, “unlucky at cards lucky in love,” on its head for the swinging ‘House Of Cards,’ and has a little fun creating a blues limerick on the jaunty rhumba ‘That’s All She Wrote.’ There is plenty of pickin’ and grinnin’ on the singalong roots rocker, ‘You Just Can’t Lose,’ and Guldin declares his love on the sentimental ballad ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is.’ Hot horn jabs and a layer of Hammond B3 make the groovin’ ‘Sweet Thing,’ a soul stew. The folk infused advisory ‘Check Yourself,’ features tasty mandolin and harmonica from Will Hodgson, leader of the veteran Pennsylvania group, The Mighty Manatees. Guldin takes his cues from the great political satirist Mark Russel for his comical rebuke ‘One Percent.’ Mickey Junior returns to jam with the band on classic twelve bar chestnut ‘Key To The Highway,’ before the acoustic instrumental ‘Waterfall,’ with its shimmering guitars, closes the set.

The joy Mike Guldin and his friends had making “Tumblin’” is felt and heard on every track of the album. ~Rick J Bowen

They call it "Good Ole Butt-Shakin' Music". Mike and the boys serve up their own original brand of Road House Blues, R & B, Soul and Hard Drivin' Honky Tonk Rock "n" Roll. Two time International Blues Challenge Finalists they're all about "The Groove".

Mike started playing guitar and singing at age 16, inspired and influenced by blues legends Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Albert Collins, B.B. King as well as more contemporary artists such as the Allman Bros, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Rolling Stones. Also heavily influenced by R & B / Soul icons such as Sam & Dave, Booker T. and the MGs and the Stax sound, along with the southern-fried sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Outlaws and a slew of country artists.

Having honed his craft playing in roadhouses, clubs, and bars for the last 20 years, his approach is that of a journeyman. Stinging guitar and soulful vocals are second nature for Guldin who has had the opportunity to open for such acts as Sam and Dave, Molly Hatchet and Roy Buchanan. Mike has also shared festival billing with Delbert McClinton, Levon Helm, the Nighthawks, Little Milton, Shemekia Copeland, Son Seals, Debbie Davies, E. G. Kight, Saffire the Uppity Blues Women, Michael Hill and his Blues Mob, John Sebastian and Jimmy Vivino. All of these influences and experiences come together in the original tunes of his new release "Caught Between the Blues and a Heartache". Combined with the raucous backing sounds of Rollin' & Tumblin', these inspirations are fully realized.
